We continue with converting our home over to water or hydronic based cooling and heating. IN this video we are installing the last A-coil. We removed the refrigerant A-coil and replaced it with one designed for water.

I cool my house with water based AC too.... I use chilltrex units and a custom water chiller I designed with 4 tons stored overnight so only my pumps have to run after the sun is down. Of course my house is designed super efficient with ICF Mikey Block, no air gap flat insulated roof and insulated slab/footers. My whole unit is 2 tons and uses 1650 watts. Chilltrex cooler was 220v and 12 amps max. Thats about 100 amps on my 24v battery system. So I designed my own with (2) 1 ton super efficient chillers. Working great and uses less than a third of typical home cooling for a 2850sq ft home.

super excited about this series! I'm also a big fan of water and have, as far as I know, the worlds only geothermal water greenhouse. I just added a chiller to it and you've turned me on to the capabilities of hydronics for many more applications.

My uncle was working on a similar project. He was going the ultra cheap route. He had an old irrigation well that was very deep. He collected automotive radiators for coils. He was going to run it as a secondary system. He had a big farm house that was costing a lot to cool. Not sure if he ever finished it.

Very simple air conditioner for a small yacht. Using a small 12vdc submersible pump that will raise water at least 20 ft pump the cold water through a used heater core from a wrecked car and back into the lake. This core should be enclosed in a metal box of sorts with fins exposed. Connect a 12vdc computer fan in the box to blow through the heater core.
Water from the lake at that depth will be cold and while running will cool your yacht considerably. Mine works just fine now for 20 years. Water at my dock 20 ft down is 56ºF in summer. My well water at home is 52ºF all year. Hope this will work for you.

My dad had a buddy with a house built over an old well. He got a radiator out of an old junked pickup, plumbed it into the well, and set up a fan to blow air over it. The well water was plenty cold enough to handle a Nebraska summer. Not sure I'd try to do it much further south than that, but with the solar-powered ice production to build up that "bank of cold", it should be workable pretty much anywhere (because the hotter it is, generally the more hours of sunlight you have anyway).

I have been thinking of building an air cooling hydronic unit for a long time. I have a natural spring that feeds my pond in the back yard. Here in Indiana ground water temps are around 53F. I already heat with outdoor wood boiler. pex tubing on the bottom of the floors.......I basically can heat the house on around 300w of power with the boiler blower going, and the circulating pump going. The furnace is only a backup system.....and they are not connected to one another.

You should convert to R290 propane refrigerant, look how is saves compressor load! Saves recovery hassles too. Two cans 20 each should be plenty. I was amazed how less = more. You'd be safe, it's only outdoors, in worst case leak.

    • @solexxx8588

Agree. Either R290 or CO2 in a mono-block is perfect for water heating in the north.

This summer im going to (attempt) cooling my house using the 55-60 degree water that constantly flows in the creek next to my house.
My plan is to make a ram-pump to freely pump creek water to a storage tank that will sit at the highest elevation on my property.
From there I'll let the water gravity flow to intake port on the A-coil in my furnace/duct work.
Then I'll just turn the furnace to "fan" and that should in theory keep the house cool.
The discharge flow will just go back to the creek from which it came.
At some point, I'd like to figure out a way to make the water flow power the blower fan so the whole system will be totally self sustained.

hydronics is great way to do things. have to be careful on the piping so you don't have gost flows. pipe size is also very important. I've done lots of it over the years. curcilators take power. once a gin pipe sizing for smaller circulators is a must.you can do it just a lot of planning

now you have to use that same flowing water in the same system and use a filtering device so that you can tint continually use it for washing your hands and dishes and so forth. not to mention using solar energy to power the fans that cool your house. what's the most natural method to heat your house in the most economically sound away?

If the system can't handle the humidity fast enough remember you can cheat and just add plates to pass cold water thru to collect condensation on and have it separate from the temperature control.

Solar is the only way that is even remotely cost effective. There are conventional chiller based 'ac' systems in 2 high rise buildings I help take care of (on the magnitude of 20+40 ton compressors) They just don't cut the mustard on the 90+ degree days. The chiller unit makes the water plenty cold, but the blowers in the apartments just don't pull enough moisture out of the air.

    • @tripzero0
      @tripzero0 7 лет назад

is this because refrigerant is cooler and therefore condenses more moisture from the air that's circulating throughout the house?

  • @ScouterAndrew

Have you looked at using an absorption cycle chiller utilizing solar thermal collection rather than PV to a compressor?

Tinker time mechanical engineers like to play with chilled water loops.Electricity rates for residential are not time specific. a VRF system with inverter compressor beats chilled water for home cooling. It's quick acting, no mass storage required, no extra heat exchange, pumps.
