Why not try wood gutters. It holds wine in barrels, it's bound to be able to carry rain water every now and then. There must be some safe way to seal it up. Just throwing out ideas. In fact, I may look into that myself! Good work guys!
Man, it’s a shame the gutters didn’t work out, but now you know so much more! The house is looking great! When do you back fill between the floor and the walls?
Our failures are just as important as the success and your finished home will be proof of that. Have you considered aircrete with a grout finish or sealer over it? It’s light weight, very efficient and do not too hard to make. Keep up the awesome work. All the best
I have watched your build from the beginning and, what you have accomplished is amazing. Your already a success 😃. When you finish the house it will just be that much better. Then you can go back and refine things. Remember that you will always have things to do, on a homestead.
We live in snow/ice country where we also need to control water runoff from the roof. We decided gutters attached to the roof are just too difficult to maintain in our climate. Instead we built shallow trenches on the ground, lined with pond liner, with enough slope to channel the water as we needed. We added a little 'bridge' where a pathway crossed the water channel. You might be able to do something similar, using your earth bags to create a trough & provide the needed slope. You could channel your runoff into a sump pit. And then make a wind-driven Archimedes' screw to raise the water from the sump to the cistern. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archimedes%27_screw One advantage of ground-based gutters is that they are easy to build, clean and maintain. Might be at least a temporary solution for you.
I love what you two are doing out in the middle of the desert! You two are my HEROES! ❤❤ Thank you both for sharing. BTW I'm from Tucson but currently live in Virginia. I enjoyed hearing the coyotes as well. I miss the desert. Watching you two helps with that. Take care in these strange times.
About your gutters. You can start with regular metal. After installation coat inside and out with Kool Coat. It’s a roofing material you can paint on that seals and is water proof. It is white so it reflects the heat. You can coat the roof of your camper with what is left over and keep it cooler than you would think possible. Great stuff.
I really appreciate you ❤ 💛 💕 love watching 👀 your wonderful 👏 episodes and content. I was having a bad day but after these fantastic 💃 🕺 and the fly moves 😎 I feel much better.
When I saw you take down that aluminum guttering and put that up the Ferrocement it had me wondering why, but out of respect we did not comment. Live and learn, heh? When we hear Coyotes that close we can usually see them within a couple of hundred yards of our Sh'ouse. Looking good on the homestead, folks!
If your trying to use the gutters as a water catch... Suggestion: increase the length of the roof ( closer ) to the ground. Then install your gutters ... With the lower the gutters it will be easier to maintain and the weight will work with the center of gravity.
Jeff have you thought of plywood glass fibre with a quick and easy system to remove before winter snow weight. A lot of work but you'll always cant savage max water. You've never been lazy especially to max water salvage. Your best attributes. Gods on side, Jess is your wife, crew your guard dog, and neither of you are lazy. Amen
Bah, never a failure, NEVER! Only learning and moments we had, each a gift! Real love teaches you that for certain. The coyotes cry for your jokes. Cold hands, warm heart is how I was told.
Hi guys! New subscriber! Hi from North-east Arizona. I totally understand how frustrating it can be, I live here for over a year off grid... and I did have a lot of mistakes. There Is Nothing to be ashamed of...I think its part of Living. It's great that We can Live this way, and learn. I hear that sound of cayots each day. We just start shooting and they go away. Be patient, Never Gave up! and keep on going. You Are Doing great!
Here i am again with some good advice! For these gutters, learn from the past and make Roman Aqueducts(lots of work). Or us wood, make a big U-gutter and put some plastic layers in there that you got laying around to cover thing up., put a layer of little rocks in it. OR use that wood as described earlier and get som plastic drinking bottles, straight ones and cut the so you only have the straight plastic and apply with glue in the gutter. Have fun!
Before you get to high up on your course around the door frame area, measure the inside at the bottom, at the top and where you have compacted the bags. There is a good chance you are pushing the wood frame support a little bit. You may have a bow at the center. That is why when you use a string between two points you set the ends higher than what you want (measure with a tape from the string to the edge of the material). If you push the material against the string it changes the path and when you get to the other end you have a curve if any of the material touched the string.
Chick e waa waa haven’t heard that in years LOL!! Keep up the good work. Sorry the fero cement gutters didn’t work. If you don’t try you will never know it it would have worked. We all learn by our mistakes I don’t think you have to own up to anything!! Love watching your videos.
Make the gutters from wood planks joined as a V . Screwed tight they will only get tighter as the wood gets wet. You could also line them with a waterproof membrane...
Great work you two. Don't work too hard. Lol.. When i had to move a pile of dirt.. I started from the top and let gravity do the work. Keep ☝ the dream.
A suggestion on the gutter system. I saw a video where this Asian dude took towels, put it in very watery cement to make a form for a water feature. Once the towels were soaked he put it on the form, when dried it was hard and the shape of the form. It might work for your gutters.
Hey, my advice to you guys is now that the soil is more moist, is cover it with some tarps to retain the moisture longer and not let it be exposed to evaporation
Hey guys... As already suggested, using PVC pipe for rain gutters might be a great alternative -- it's relatively light but strong, will last a long time even under extended exposure to UV, and is naturally WIND RESISTANT. You could even use a similar mounting method, but I wouldn't cut them in half -- roughly 1/3 removed would be much more stable and efficient as well as give you a little more to work with. Something to think about... :^)
There is a type of cement made with foam that is very lightweight. I forget what its called. You might want to look into it. Its environmentally safe it might help you out in ur building. Stay safe and stay healthy 🙏❤
Maybe Jessica IS the key master, you might be gate keeper 😉 good plan doing the extra hallway layer of bags, they tie in nicely 😎👍Inspector Crewsoe seemed happy with inspection. RIP ferro mark1.
I think you should cut some PVC pipe length wide and the fittings too. Clue em all up. You might need a jig or clamps to keep it all together, and strait until it's done.
If still time a green house between the rooms would be great place for winter lounging and growing food. just a thought... kind of like the earthships. looking great y'all work so hard and have come a long way. keep it up your doing awesome :)
Yea, don't rush! the last thing you want to do is accidentally pull a muscle or something. The saying goes "slow is smooth.. and smooth is fast". Thanks for the video.
I think the gutters could have worked if you had built them on top of some flat metal that was supported with metal beams/pipes/ to hold them up and maybe you could have made forms that would make the gutter themselves a little lighter. It was a good idea. Try, try again.
Learning a lot watching you as you to move along there. But when you did the gutters I wqas woundering why you didn't just flex seal the gutters after you hung them. On the out side.
I’d like to offer some encouragement. Please don’t beat yourself up too badly over the collapsed gutter. From the outside it is obvious that you’re doing a great job. Setbacks are bound to happen and when compared to what you two have accomplished, this is minor. All builds have problems and most come with bigger price tags for mistakes. I have faith that you’ll rebuild the gutter better than would have been possible the first time around. It’s all part of the process of self building and you’ve got the right attitude. Keep at it and we’ll keep watching!
The ONLY time we fail is when we you totally give up. We have to think every thing that was man made there was always failure until it worked out . And question how are you going to the higher to get with a curve to tap the bags . cant wait to see when your done so so excited for you 2 ! And how is your Mom doing? She home yet?
Not going to agree that it was a "mistake". "Mistake" suggests that you could have known better. However, the gutter was an experiment in which you found an unforeseen challenge.
GDP, I was wondering if you thought about maybe using the air create for your gutters ? I know that it’s lite in the weight department. And could probably do ya some good in the long run after seeing what the concrete gutters did. Check it out. Enjoying your videos y’all keep up the great work
I found a video that might help from another youtuber, Modern Self Reliance, where he built a rainwater collection system for a cabin in the woods using reclaimed ABS pipes. Maybe it will give you some ideas.
Just a thought. Could it work to use large indoor outdoor storage hook hangers in L shape made of steel to put all along so it will hold the gutter? I suppose you could attach the hooks to the wood. Maybe then the gutter won't fall off. Like I said, just a thought.
Where did you source your bags. I think I like the smaller bag over the continuous roll. More manageable. And I heard your message to your neighbor Little Homestead, read on there pod cast.
I'm glad you brought that up. I had to finish listening to the podcast. They also kind of mentioned us earlier in there too. 😁 Check the video description here. I believe I have the video link with the bag info.
