If you need to remove gravel in your cob mixture, I suggest that you use a mesh screen to filter out the gravel. It will serve two purposes, another supply of gravel and less gravelly cob. The size of the mesh would depend on how big the gravel you want to filter out.
Really appreciate 🙏 and love watching your progress. Jess i love watching the team work between you both. Your humor 🤣 is appreciated . If I new how to send a cow bone with meat on for your beautiful crew he is a whole lot of awesomeness 😎 . Show appreciation for your awesomeness both of you.
I always look forward to seeing all your progress. I'm also impressed with how tidy everything looks in your construction area. You guys are HARD workers!
I think a spiral rain gutter built right into your earth bag home for rain collection. I can't help but think that what you learned from the ones that didn't work was exactly what ya'll needed to know to make something work to collect rain from the house 🤷♀️
It is clearly starting to shape up, can imagine it now the living space and kitchen entrance way and all. I really liked to be able to see what you are doing with the water storage and toilet refuse and all (because learning a lot) as well as the way you got the shelter structure water catchment in early good plan. But now It's getting really interesting watching you build the main central structure. Just to say really enjoying following your channel. Thank you.
Here's a thought on the b wire .A skateboard that does curving could work contain the track its allowed to run. Its a idea im concidering Change wheels
A house is built by money but a home is built by people. You both are so good hard worker almighty Allah bless you and your lovely family saeed Ahmed from lahore pakistan
I love your channel and always anticipate your next episode. I have one idea to consider with your cool portable barbed wire cart. The "U" bolt should have come with a flat piece with two holes in it. They could be used as the surface that the bar sits on rather than bar resting and sometimes turning on the plastic and wearing a groove over time. Thanks for your inspiration.
Might have to go back to sifting the dirt for the cob. And the slots on the inside of the gorilla cart will hold 2×4's so that you can stack things on top, like a sifting tray 😊.
Jessica needs a garden scooter to sit on while working like that. It will save her knees and help her get more done. I got one for my wife to use in the garden many years ago. You need a couple more wagons. As you are manually sorting rocks, put the different sizes in different carts. Keep your eyes out for dead lawn tractors. I've turned a couple into wagons(just unbolting the tops and engines). for moving things. Good Luck, Rick
If I could travel I would so help you guys out. Looking great. I love your work around and innovation. Edit: Have you thought of asking builders in the area for the dirt/gravel that they excavate? Or even scrape wood? Building sites have a lot of reusable materials.
Love seeing all the progress. I can really see how beautiful it will be. I can just see the fabulous views you’ll have. What kind of future do y’all see for the place. Will you have animals and such?
What? You never seen the little wooden siders to a kids red wagon? Same idea :) That can include raising the bottom.. by using a platform with little feet that use those holes to stabilize it and raise height of the spill from it. Glad to see more of the work. Wish I could build you two a hot tub for the aches of such hard work. Take care, see you next time.
Hey guys love your videos you work so hard and keep a great attention to detail building your home and your doing it by hand WOW can't wait to see it done great to hear mom's doing better
just a thought: lookn into hempcrete for nan insulation layer under your earth-floor. It mixes very similar to cob, only hemp is used instead of straw, and add lime to the mix to provide hardness.
@@noteem5726 hempcrete has more structure to it and more moisture/fire/mold resistance. The lime creates a higher bonding element than cob. It still requires the sub-base of gravel and rock as presented in this show, so it is a perfect condition for its use. The key element for either system is that the stone sub-base needs to be at a height that keeps the cob or hemp above the height of the exterior soil height. It is really a tragedy that the US is so behind in hemp production!
Could you wrap the outside of the earth bags with fishing net in order to pull the bags together and hold the cob in place within the outside cob coating of the bags. It might keep the cob from falling away. Nylon net could do the same as metal net without the chance of penetrating the plastic bags.
Since wet cob can become unstable, I was wondering if you considered placing larger rocks for a couple of courses at the base of the dome with lime mortar?
I have to admit that I love the effect of the cob. It reminds me of some of the Pueblos. Of course, they didn't have the 'luxury' of earthbags, but their dwellings have withstood the years/centuries quite well. Oh, btw, would a light slurry of cob be effective on the uncobbed layers as a temporary UV protector? It'd be easier to apply, block the rays, and you could come back later to slather on the 'real' cob. Do you dampen the bags before you apply the cob or is that unnecessary? I know they do that in straw bale houses but didn't know if all cob applications needed that prep work. Be well, you three and all the best to your mom.
Build a frame with screens to stop passing of stones you dont want from goi g into mix, high enough for cart to go under hinged screen to dump rocks, great job
Nice!! yall make good progress every time!! slowly but surely the castle will be ready... Keep it up! EDIT: I can see how applying cob can be really exhausting; bending and squatting is really tough, especially when done for extended periods... Perhaps the squatting can be broken up by getting on the inside of the structure and laying across the bags and kinda hanging up-side down while applying cob? It probably wouldn't have been comfortable since the course of bags is full of gravel, but at least there was no barbed wire yet!. . . And upon watching more, I can see that the COB was complete already heheh
I just got me some of them glam gloves! Y’all getting it done! Looks amazing so far. ❤️❤️❤️ The weather is gettin good! Nothing like the smell of cob the morning! We have tons of clay in our soil.
Small nuts.. Priceless! Cool wire wagon! Jess gonna smack ya with a rock one day! Be warned. LMBO. Talk about a mud bath! Awesome job done is correct! Really enjoy watching you two building your dream home. Stay safe and have a great weekend!
With as much as cob you and Jessica will have to do need to get her a creeper seat for the low to ground cob work it will save her back and knees. I am sure you may understand what I am talking about it would work I would think as smooth as the ground is around . See I use to work doing stuccoing around permanent foundations four manufactured homes I am block work and for we are stuccoing part of the job we would use them to save on the employees backs and knees. Winner, winner chicken dinner on the Barbwire holler.
Have you considered adding chicken wire to the outside to reinforce your cob layer ? Or do you think long term it has enough strength with just the straw?
I’ve noticed in other blogs of people building earth bag homes that they were using re-barb ( like a spike) to strengthen their walls did you consider doing that?
I think rebar would be an okay addition in some instances. Problem is pounding rebar through tamped bags might break up compaction. I feel it might be a double edged sword.
Hello bro, As the structure gets higher, that barb wire is going to get to be a mammer jammer PITA You are installing it around the dome I was wondering. if you were to cut the wire into pieces the same width of the bag and install 3 pieces cross ways on each bag. would that help you out?
Just a quick question. When the structure is complete, will the gravel around the outside be visible around the base, or will a cob or plaster mixture sort of seal it to the ground?
Thank you so much for watching! We hope you have a fantastic day.

you need to build a sifter for your dirt
you have everything you need already
Why do you prefer the cobb over stucco? Is it the cost ?
Kids in the hall, crushing your head, there was an episode where he had a fight with another guy that wanted to squish his head.

Wicked cool team 😎 no wonder you were a little tired on your live stream, well done that cob looks gr8, and the gorilla wire system 👍 👏 😀
Thank you Richard!
Way to stay positive over the gutter issue love your positive attitude. So looking forward to seeing the house being complete.

We sure do want to see you both and crew much love and good health to mom.
Love the five finger death punch reference. Looks great 👍
I just love watching all what you two are accomplishing. Your home is so full of love and stability!

Cool seeing the first layer of cob fo on. 👍
I'm always hesitant. I'll see how it works when we get to the higher layers.😁

Kids in the hall. "I crush your head". Also used "I squish you". I think there was a Monte Python sketch that used it as well.
Oh, hey, maybe it was
That's right!😀
7:38 oh I got that reference 😀. Nice to see you had some warmer weather to work in. 👍
Did you watch that show. I know they were Canadian.

After building a cistern, pantry, and bedroom, there's no way I'd arm wrestle you......... Jess. WTG guys. Keep that Akita tight.

just a thought: lookn into hempcrete for nan insulation layer under your earth-floor. It mixes very similar to cob, only hemp is used instead of straw, and add lime to the mix to provide hardness.
What are the benefits because straw is easier and probably cheaper to get

Those [pockets are for slats of 1 by 3 so you can create a higher outer edge to carry more stuff .

Purrfect!
Great job as always Jess, love your use of the materials you have in different ways
The cob looks great! Love your gorilla cart hack.
You guys have been getting a lot of high winds!
Thanks Lynette! It's rare to have a day where it's not windy.😁
Since wet cob can become unstable, I was wondering if you considered placing larger rocks for a couple of courses at the base of the dome with lime mortar?
We're actually thinking of doing a gabion around the bottom.
This is exciting watching you build your home and learning something new. Thanks for the great videos!

We don't need to dampen the bags. A light application of cob might work, it should be light tight though.
What you need is a barb wire compass ....
Build a frame with screens to stop passing of stones you dont want from goi g into mix, high enough for cart to go under hinged screen to dump rocks, great job
Such lovely work. One quick question about cobbing-as-you-go.... When you tamp the bags, doesn't that risk breaking the cob below?
I don't think it will be an issue. We'll find out soon.
Could you put pipe from a rocket stove around in the lowered portion between the outer walls and the osb floor?

If you add dried manure to your cob it will become waterproof, ya know...
Love the way you say I'm cobbin over here.
😁
What bags are you using? And what are they filled with
Jim those gloves are perfect for you...its the way we see you :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Lol!
Seriously, will the cobb be ok with tamping?
It will be fine.
You need a tiny stool to use cobbing so low
Nice mod to your buggy!
Jim and the kids in the hall crushing heads. LOL
Lol!
Well done “ one bag at a time”
Have you considered adding chicken wire to the outside to reinforce your cob layer ? Or do you think long term it has enough strength with just the straw?
Just the straw should do for now. Well be putting a more waterproof layer on later.
Can you use tyvek as a cover

Hey Sherry!👋
"Crushing your head" was a Canadian comedy show... kids in the hall, maybe?

You are installing it around the dome I was wondering. if you were to cut the wire into pieces the same width

It's better if the wire is in one piece. It adds to the tensile strength of the build.
@@ourselfreliantlife I learned something today !!! Thanks!!!

Kids in the Hall.😁

The gravel won't be visible. It will be covered by layers of cob and maybe a gabion.
@@ourselfreliantlife maybe? All GDP's need a finishing gabion

There will be more cob there eventually.
