I read somewhere that they want to portray Criston as something of a thug, so accidently crushing a guy's skull instead of "cleanly" slitting his throat fits with that.

Channeling what a ton of people are saying, Sara Hess is a detriment to this show going forward. I think she completely bastardized the Green Council (a scene in the books with confirmed dialogue to work with). They reverted Alicent back from being a player to a pawn and a victim of circumstance, removing her justifications for crowning Aegon beyond him being the firstborn son. Rhaenyra's recklessness, her children being bastards (which was the controversy for 3 episodes), and the misconception that Rhaenyra would execute them all that Otto placed in her head from when she was young are just gone or forgotten. They also made Ser Criston's most condemning action (the first blood in the Dance) be an accident and removed his homophobic line against Ser Laenor. I understand they're going for morally gray, but these actions ARE morally gray in the books (Alicent's self-preservation and Criston's honor and hatred for Rhaenyra). Doing it in this method robs both these characters of so much agency and it makes them feel like husks of their character in the books.
Now for the elephant in the room, Rhaenys and Aegon's coronation. Hess's comment in the "House that Dragons Built" for episode 9 remind me of D&D when they wanted a zombie polar bear in S7. According to her, they were in the writers room and she said, "It would be awesome if Rhaenys just came through the floor on a dragon!" Forgetting logistics of the stones alone killing her, Rhaenys had the potential to end the war with a single "dracarys" but chose not to. It's clear she's a writer who values spectacle over substance, logic, and reason. This is also reinforced because she wrote "The Princess and Queen," meaning she's the one who botched Laena's death scene in terms of pacing and satisfaction.
According to her in an interview with THR about the consequences of what Rhaenys did. "It's Game of Thrones -- civilians don't count!" which is absolutely and fundamentally stupid. There are so many examples in ASOIAF and GoT I can cite where characters DO care for the people (The Starks, Dany in Slaver's Bay, Jamie and Aerys, Margaery in King's Landing, Brienne's entire story in AFFC). I guess with this logic, we shouldn't care about the war crimes Aemond commits in the Riverlands because it's the smallfolk. I suppose if killing civilians doesn't count, Daenerys was morally in the right in S8 and D&D didn't completely assassinate her character.
Overall, this episode has me worried for the future of HotD. It has all the recipes for the telltale signs we saw in GoT S2. Hess genuinely feels like a liability and dead weight with the future of this show. Interestingly she was involved with the Long Night prequel too, so I have no clue how HBO didn't see this becoming a possibility. It's a shame too because she apparently is locked in for Season 2 and I don't want see her botch up Rook's Rest, the Dragonseeds, Blood & Cheese, or The Gullet, but it's looking like she'll get to write one of those episodes...

Sara wrote the episode, so I blame her for the writing in the episode. All of my complaints stem from the writing. That's not to say there weren't good scenes: I thought Alicent's conversation with Rhaenys, Otto, Aegon, and Helaena were great, I even loved the attention to detail of Talya lighting the candles to alert Mysaria that Viserys was dead. But there's so many writing inconsistencies that build up over the course of this episode that culminate in that ending where I think this is a massive stumble in an otherwise fantastic show. As you said in the video, they are not handling this decision well to the point where fans are coming up with better rationalizations for Rhaenys. Sara Hess isn't making good arguments either, and the line about the smallfolk just infuriates me. Also she SAYS it was her decision and idea, the direct quote from The House that Dragons Built for Episode 9 is "I just remember we were in the writer's room one day and I was like 'It would be awesome if Rhaenys just came through the floor on a dragon!"
I think other writers who made these "problematic decisions" definitely should be held to account, but they're not as significant as Rhaenys going completely out of character and killing innocent civilians and then not ending the war before it even began. They wanted a "badass dragon scene" people would talk about even if it defied logic.
In regards to the Long Night prequel: I had heard she had some involvement with the writing process but I can concede it being misinformation or a misread on my part my mistake.

The writers wanted a dagon scene, so they gave us one, sure to delight the same brainless masses who enjoyed GoT season 8...but forgot to have it make sense for either the plot or the characters involved, thus making this episode underwhelming, and easily the worst of an otherwise steller season.

If I remember correctly, the first thing Alicent tries to do is protect her children, standing in front of one of them while Meleys approaches. Alicent is the kind of trapped-in-the-system woman desperately trying to affect change that Rhaenys herself could have become. Maybe I was getting something out of it that no one else was. It's such a shame we won't have a fully narrative version of this material. I think that would be really powerful. I do like that you brought up the great taboo of kinslaying. HotD is a brilliant series , really can't praise it enough. The appeal to the most hardcore books fans down to small details , especially with delving into and at times expanding the lore. All the while the top quality writing , directing , acting , most creative choices , the balance of scheming & machinations with action / spectacle ; and of course giving us dynamic compelling characters. All of which can appeal to just about anyone.
Massive fan of HotD but in this case still a strong entertaining episode it was a bit of a slip / misstep and one of my least favorite of the season. Though still one of the less great episodes is still quite good. A few gripes , I did feel the Aegon II search went on a bit too long ; a nice opportunity to explore Flea Bottom and there is some textual evidence but this far exceeded it. Also seemed a bit clumsy to just stumble on Otto and Mysaria ; surely two such clandestine schemers would not be so careless there. Didn't care for the show's version of AH & Larys' arrangement either , enough been said everywhere about that. With AH i don't think we are there yet but thus far HotD does often approach many negatives about / with her often being attributed to outside influences ; something for them to watch out for imo.
Though my biggest issue in this episode was around Rhaenys. This seemed a bit more spectacle over substance which i do think this concept always will have that temptation to lean towards. Not terrible but just not the best choices with the character this episode. I think like Laenor surviving having Rhaenys in KL for this just gives rise to some unneeded complication. Here just does not feel like Rhaenys (especially from the text) to kill innocents in such a way and then that whole will she / won't she kill the Greens. Rhaenys , who she saw visual evidence the Greens were killing high up dissidents (Lord Merryweather etc) and she could have been next. Book Rhaenys would not kill innocents in such a way and don't like what that whole Greens confrontation gives rise to. Now i see many mostly show watchers somewhat blaming Rhaenys for not ending the war then. Easy to solve just do not have her there to begin with or at least have her escape once the crowd disperses to avoid the innocents , maybe spotted by the Greens as she leaves. I think Aegon II riding Sunfyre just after per the text would have been a nice memorable scene itself and go the Rhaenys escaping route if she needed to be there at all.
Still a top notch show but even the best series , be it the from certain directors or from the top / show-runners' choices , can make missteps at times.

It's a big part of Hollywood in 2022. They act like "strong female leads" are something new and unusual. They ignore that movies have always had such characters. Look at the roles of Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwck, Maureen O'Hara, and others. What's really changed is a refusal to make any woman an out and out villain. That's what's going on with Alicent.
On the other side, female heroes tend to lack real flaws (it's always something like they're holding back their full potential). We're seeing some of that with Rhaenyra, but not entirely. For example, Daemon executes Vaemond on his own instead of Rhaenyra telling him to do it. She's not directly involved in the murder of the poor sap they use as Laenor's corpse.

Couple things about Mysaria. She was unironically one of my favorite characters in F&B. I always thought there was so many layers there and to find out in HotD that Daemon didn’t include her in his schemes and that led her further down this way really excites me for what the character can do. But my hunch is she was supposed to have a few additional scenes but the accent was so bad they had to cut a few (or the fast pace of season 1 got the ideas cut in the writers room) but I also don’t find the character distracting even with these inconsisten accents. I didn’t like the Rhaenys scene. Yes, it could be a set up for common folks’ views on dragons and on dragonpit, a “forshadowing” as got fans would’ve called it. I’m talking, of course, about the interruption of the coronation with a dragon that kills at least a dozen of civilians. She should’ve left then and there. Maybe give us a minute to see than it was Rhaenys, flex her armour, even show that she’s somehow hurt by the rocks and give us a reaction on dead or injured civilians - sympathetic or not. But she ignores everything around her and focuses on the royal family, gives this badass girlboss staring moment that has already been made into tiktok edits, then she shows “mercy” or "honor" and leaves.
And Rhaenys is a likeable character, so, on one hand, casual viewers are going to turn a blind eye on her killing those people, and on the other hand, it would probably have no influence or consequences on her character. I’m sure she is still going to be good even though she doesn’t give a fuck about small folk. When they were deliberately talking about the struggles of small folk this whole episode.
I’m sure there was another way to leave the dragonpit, she chose to cause a scene ignoring all casualties.
I’m not saying I hate the episode of the show, I just had s 6-8 flashback. Hope next episode will give me something to work with.
Also, I’ve noticed you didn’t talk about Cole not being a Kingmaker in the show, seemed like a big deal to me. Cole “coming from nothing” and “having nothing but his white cloak “ as they say in the show, would be a great addition to the overall theme of those who are beneath royalty or big lords, common people. I’m also surprised they didn’t have it and that they didn’t give Fabien Frankel more screen time and personality with that plot. Now he’s just a pretty face to hate for me.

    Seven is a good number.
And yeah, I didn’t think Alicent misinterpreting the prophecy would be anything else other than moving the plot along and making the Dance feel a bit more tragic in its origins, which works very well for the show in my opinion.
And I respect that you’re Team Black, but personally I’m on Team Orange, just waiting for the realm to go to war in Dorne before going out to raid the Marches. 😜
In regards to the unreliable narrator, I have been appreciating how they go about weaving the different historical accounts in the narrative, sometimes following one exactly and at other types not quite so. Given that the historical literature coming from a lot of people after the Dance and from people with a lot of biased accounts of the Dance, it makes sense that some things are off slightly like Beesbury’s death or the root origin of Aegon’s personality.
I still do like that Mysaria is doing more in the show and is being fleshed out better, but yeah the accent was a weird choice given how long she’s been portrayed to have been in Kings Landing for by this point. One would assume that it would’ve been less heavy by now if nothing else, and while I could understand her just fine I am a little worried that the execution could just break down depending on how the potential pandering works out long-term.
Side note, it’s really cool that the HotD cast and team has either spoken to or referenced you on more than one occasion now. I think that’s a very good sign for the direction of the show.
And I actually didn’t have problem with Rhaenys sparing the Greens, but I think they could’ve done something like you mentioned to justify it visually and after the fact. Like you said, kinslaying is still pretty serious and regular kinslaying hasn’t been set as a precedent from the Dance yet, let alone such direct kinslaying. Not to mention some of the Greens would’ve remained alive after the fact so killing everyone there wouldn’t have completely removed all the Greens. Also, given how many people have already died in her family up to this point, she doesn’t strike me as someone who would’ve wanted to add to that body count unless she had the foresight to see what would happen with the Dance after not having done so.

    • @MaJetiGizzle

A quick addendum to the last point, Targaryens see themselves as being closer to gods than men. So Rhaenys, like Daemon in the Stepstones, probably doesn’t give a shit about peasants being killed en masse by her dragon because to a royal, peasants aren’t real people. Now, Targaryens killing other Targaryens, that level of kinslaying, hasn’t really happened much since Maegor The Cruel. So the precedent of decades of peaceful rule acts as another clear barrier to Rhaenys just outright killing everyone. This continues the one big flaw I see with the writing this season: trading logic for cool moments. In the Inside the Episode for episode 5 and 9, they basically say they were trying to get cool moments.
The weirdest thing is this: If I remember correctly, the events of this episode had more source material than any of the previous episodes so it should've been the easiest to write. So much good stuff they could've took from the books (Larys's blood oath instead of his...whatever that was). This decision surprised me since Ryan is a diehard fan.
If they really wanted to give Rhaenys a cool moment, they could've had her escape through the side door we saw Syrax use in episode 1. What they did with Rhaenys made her a mass murder and dumb for not taking out the greens (since they haven't set up kinslaying).

This was indeed Rhaenys' episode - I'm glad that they gave her a more prominent role/really something to do. Eve Best is a great actress, truly a joy to watch. I liked seeing her manage to escape from the Red Keep, and later from the Dragonpit on Meleys. I loved the 'wet fart' in Alicent and Aegon II's faces, giving a definite answer to Alicent's offer from earlier in the episode, truly saying 'No!' in the most epic way possible haha That was the point of this scene, and I have no issue with it at all/it makes sense to me. Although it seems that way, it has nothing to do with her contemplating/wanting to (have the opportunity to) take out the Greens (by dragonfire), which does not make sense at this early point in the story (we know everything/all the horrors that will happen, she does not) and with her character in general. She truly acts like a queen, the Queen Who Never Was, in this moment, fiery but not stupid/ruthless: she wants to deliver a clear message to the Greens, but not outright murder them then and there, which would have been very bad (that is not who she is/wants to be, ànd it would not be her place to do so, but Rhaenyra's). So there ìs a reasonable explanation here but the writers do not present it/any other argument firmly/stand behind it, which I really dislike and is a small red flag for me. Having said that, I do have (two) issues concerning the ending though, namely how she and Melys bursted through the _stone_ floor of the pit (which does not make sense), severely injuring/killing numerous small folk in the process, and secondly how they escaped through the doors, which looked very cartoony.
I liked it that they again made Alicent not too unlikeable (unlike episode 6), and (instead) depict Otto and the partriarchy as the real evil of the story. Given that in the tv canon Alicent is not the embodiment of the evil stepmother trope (with a large age gap between her and Rhaenyra), but instead the childhood friend who had a serious falling out with Rhaenyra but still has some (positive) feelings for her (left), and who has a sincere respect/(some form of) love for Viserys, I appreciate this. They made it clear that Alicent, unlike Rhaenys, accepts/wants to live within the bounds of the (partriarchial) system, which is ultimately largely why she does not get the support from her/why Rhaenys rejects Alicent's offer (which makes so much sense since Rhaenys lost at the Great Council of 101 AC largely due to the system working against her). [It is of course still treason what Alicent does in this episode - let there be no misunderstanding about what exactly I am saying here.]
Crazy enough the highlight for me this episode was Aegon II - in his scenes (fight/struggle) with Aemond, in the wheelhouse with Alicent (with some great acting there from Tom!), and during the coronation scene. My hope, expressed last week, (partially) came through this episode - they are sufficiently developing his character (i.e. trying to give him more depth/us more insight in who he is and why he acts this way) and are seemingly indeed putting him on an arc - which made me happy. Aegon II is pathetic and his behaviors are inexcusable, but he's also tragic (i.e. it's understandable from a psychological point of view). He is less stupid than we thought: he (instinctively) knows he is a puppet of his mother/Otto (to be pulled on a string in their ploys) and he knows that he was not supposed to be(come) king in the eyes of his father Viserys, so he resists in all ways (self-destructive escapism) he can find. He desperately tries to get/hide away from it all, but ultimately he can't and knows that he will be forced into it (forced to participate in the act of treason), no matter what (he says/does or how unfit he is to rule). In this episode they made it obvious that Aegon II is emotionally immature, unstable, and insecure, that he feels unloved and is constantly doubting himself and his position in life, and that he just wants some genuine attention/love/support from his family (which he did not get much from Viserys, but neither from Alicent). I liked the contrast with Aemond (the ambitious second brother), and the first signs of 'growth' towards the situation where he gets used to and even wants to/likes being king/his position and will be determined to hold on to the crown (from 'I don't want it, I can't do it, it should be Rhaenyra' to 'I want it, it is my birthright, Rhaenyra is the usurper') [first signs being that he really enjoyed the applause machine of the small folk//he sees that he can find the attention/love he so desperately desires there (in/derived from his new position as king) and thus that maybe being king is not so bad after all]. In any case, I'm curious how things develop further with Aegon II in season 2!
    Lastly, some minor points:
    - Another minor negative this episode was that the meeting between Otto & Mysaria took place in public/out in the open, and that Criston & Aemond happen to be there to observe it just at the right time (both things are not very reasonable/do not really make much sense).
    - Corlys was again absent. I'm still wondering where and in what condition he now is exactly; I hope we'll see him next episode.
    - What will happen with Harold Westerling? Will he get murdered by Criston, or will he go over to Rhaenyra's side? The latter is most likely, but we have no info from F&B on it, so it will be interesting to see what will happen to/with him (hopefully we'll get an answer in the next episode).

Gods we really needed that line about kinslaying and vengeance. The writers are kinda obsessed with Shakespearean dialogue that they miss simple gut punching lines. This is where I feel the absence of GRRM. Remember simple yet powerful lines like "any man dies with a clean sword, I'll r*pe his f*ck*ng corpse!" or simple poetic ones like "Power resides where men believe it resides. It's a trick. A shadow on the wall"
In HotD, Daemon and Rhaenyra on Driftmark saying "we were always meant to burn together" was a great line, whereas lines like "fire is a prison" and "the sea offers an escape" were also great though shoulda been Leanor's lines to Qarl.
Point is these lines are few and far in between in HotD. Corlys and Leanor's wise lines about storms and sailors felt very mechanical, almost forced, not natural.
When young Aemond "Do not mourn me mother. It was a fair exchange. I may have lost an eye, but I gained a dragon" it was GRRM at his best, straight from Fire & Blood. However, it'd be more powerful if these words were said by an older Aemond reflecting on his life while talking to his mother, otherwise then he must have been thee most intelligent boy in all of Westerosi. Yet I don't see such wisdom in older Aemond, at least no evidence so far, only that he reads history and philosophy. My boy Jace could pass as wiser than Aemond.
Anyway, remember in GoT when Ned was ambivalent about going to KL to be Hand cos that's where his father and brother died, then his maester settled the matter with wisdom along the lines of "my lord, that was a different time, a different king"
A simple line, yet worth a million dollars.
However, I'm not complaining about HotD. I'm actually fulfilled. I knew HotD writers are competent when I heard Otto say "the Gods are yet to make a man who lacks the patience for absolute power"

Yeah, the misunderstanding of the prophesy from Alicent changes nothing except perhaps to give some other agency to Alicent to justify her actions. I'm a little puzzled why they did it in the first place, then we get the objections from Alicent to the ruthlessness of Otto with a notable shift away from her father. That was enough in and by itself to portray Alicent in the way I think they were looking for. A more nuanced Alicent from the rather one-dimensional character portrayed in the book. Larys foot-fetish scene was ridiculous haha, even more hilarious has been the reaction to it. A foot fetish is greeted with howls of disgust while Rhaenys killing scores with the exploding dragon is met with a standing ovation. Then again Game of Thrones has always been good at bringing out moral relativism. I liked this episode better on a second viewing although it's not my favourite. Even if it’s a Ned Stark move having Rhaenys kill hundreds of small folk kinda ruins that. They might be trying to set up the dragon pit moment towards the end of the story with this but it doesn’t seem like something rhaenys would do. I get that the asoiaf is ultimately a story about elites and that no matter what the common folk will suffer but still the type of relatively good noble(ie the kind that doesn’t brutalise peasants for no reason) like rhaenys cause harm to the common folk through their obliviousness towards their condition not through directness actions like this. I listened (while on a stroll) the whole clip, then waited 2 days to make sure I speak with a clear mind. I've been with you since the old days, when the first few inaccuracies of GoT started popping up.
I wholeheartedly agree that if I could (not had to) change one thing from this season, it would be the final scene. The moment I saw it my attitude deteriorated, as I was reminded of D&D gimmicks to show-off, rather than tell a story as it should be. The commentary seems to validate this, as you already said and I might add, their way of talking does bring some bad memories in mind (or funny ones). That being said, we are obviously not there, at least at this point. The first season was great, really brought back the old GoT feel, but, alas, this is a stigma.
The big question is will they address it? Will they understand the difference between a crippled man walking in a room and the grown-up woman crushing civilians and making a childish choice, plus fireworks? I really hope so. It seems, modern writers write off a check list. I understand, masterpieces do not come in a day, they need years in the making and especially talented individuals, but this sloppy patchwork can't be the only alternative. To live off the feeling, to 'emote'. Again, not there yet. But the door seems chillingly a half-open after that scene.
What Rhaenys did is potentially condemn her grandchildren to death. Her house to death. The lore and logic came falling down. It is not exactly a Ned Stark moment either. True, your words had me thinking. But Ned Stark chose not to attack first, at a time Cersei had not shown her true intentions. Even so, if it was exactly the same, we should assume that the repercussions will follow and be shown in screen and dialogue. The justification as well. Ned had the upper hand, nothing had happened yet. It was unwise to think that a slaughter would not come out of sparing Cersei Lannister, but that was the far future and his mercy now prevailed. He could blind himself to believe she would take her brother and disappear very far, far, away. It was possible. The blacks however had already made their coup, already established themselves in the heart of the realm and already drew blood. It is not the same. She was under arrest for god's sake and probably knew it would mean her end if she were not to bend the knee.
They stepped on the banana peel in that one. Let's be honest.

Meleys crashing the coronation reminded me way too much of the dragon in the cathedral in Shrek. Doesn’t help that Meleys looks a lot like Dragon.
I think the writers are trying to make Alicent a flawed but sympathetic character, probably afraid that everyone was just going to sympathize with Rhaenyra. I also did like how the council was already ready to go when Viserys died.
For Mysaria, they either need to give her more to do or else take the “less is more” approach and keep her mysterious. And yes, the accent. Mizuno has a habit of everting her lips in an almost exaggerated way when speaking so I don’t know if that’s just a quirk of hers or a result of trying too hard with the accent. But I work with special needs students (many of whom have speech issues) and had morphology classes so it’s probably something I pay more attention to than others do.
I’m enjoying the Cargyll twins so far and Aegon literally kicking and screaming to not become king was very Python-esque. “I don’t want it!” “You’ll never be a great king with that attitude.” “I want to be free!” “You’re not fooling anyone.” “I won’t be a very good king!” “I know.”

I'll leave two comments; one addressing the positives and one the negatives. Something I really enjoyed that you didn't mention was the introduction of Arryk and Erryk. They were great and I like the actors a lot. However, I wish the twins' intro would've occurred sooner. Their fate should be one of the most tragic in the story; and to an extent it will be; however, because we haven't spent much time w/them I fear it won't pack the punch it should. Which is a bit of a recurring theme this season (Laena, Harwyn) that lends itself to a larger criticism of the show but this was about positives so I digress on that. It would've been nice to see Arryk and Erryk sooner; not prominently per say, but in the same scenes as Crispin and Ser Harrold w/a line or two of dialogue between them. Would've also filled out the Kingsguard nicely since it always seems like there's only two of them.
Second- The portrayal of Aemond and Helaena's connection. When Rhaenys had them cornered, Helaena was stroking Aemond's shoulder as if to sooth him. She didn't rush to Aegon her husband; she stayed w/Aemond and tried to comfort him. Up to then I thought the show did a nice job quietly establishing that Aemond is in love w/her, but I never thought Helaena felt the same until that moment. It's just a subplot I can enjoy for the Greens despite hating them. Also would add another layer to Blood and Cheese that I hadn't expected (viewing the tragedy through Aemond's eyes given his love for Helaena). I don't think it's the case, but wouldn't it be funny if Aegon's kids were biologically Aemond's, and the very thing Alicent shames Rhaenyra for her own children did? Anyway, I enjoyed the continuation of this dynamic and look forward to more of it.

I agree. The show runners should've just said that Rhaenys didn't kill them right then because she knew she'd be forever disgraced as a kin slayer and King slayer and that also wouldn't win people to Rhaenyra's side either. This explanation would've been better. I really wish George would write the episodes or perhaps review their scripts before they start filming and he make revisions to them to help the writers out.

This atleast felt like a honest dumb explanation. "We wanted something big so we force this in" it could be smoothed over next episode but even if they do, why not do it in that episode, give rheanys some dialog explaining she will not be a kinslayer or we will give you a few weeks to change your mind or you will face fire and blood. Unless they wanted to piss off the logical audience for a week or more if not explained next week. Season 8 should have taught them people want logic over spectical. Season one Tyrion gets knocked out and they skipped a whole battle and I had no problem with it. Season 8 they have huge sloppy battle that didn't make sense and I hated it...

When we first saw Misarya, she was enunciating more-to go to unintelligible mumbling was sloppy. I thought the Rhaneys scene was _so_ GRRM. A dragon lord had a huge, badass moment that'll be remembered for generations. And nobody is going to remember the 200 small folk that got stepped. That's a big theme in the books, its always the small folks that suffer, but its the big moments like this that are remembered. They didn't just make it a badass scene we never forget, they showed the actual fallout of these big scenes

Is it in character for Rhaenys to sacrifice what seems to be at least hundreds of citizens just to make a point to the greens? Odd that the floor was the best way out, even if the usual path was shut. Also could anyone have had access to the dragons below the pit, she found her way to her dragon quite easily it seemed.

Oh good I wasn't the only one that had issues with the Rhaenys at the coronation thing (was going through my head constantly that she just needed to burn them and so many people wouldn't need to die, although it probably would be a short term gain for long tern problems).

I love your point about what they were expecting people to think about the ending scene versus reality. To me this makes Rhaenys look weak, not like a badass. I have to say tho I'm harsher than you in the sense that how is kinslaying possibly a greater crime in universe than usurping the damn throne?? If they're willing to plunge the realm into war over this then she WOULD be willing to shed first blood and kinslay to take out the traitors. Not gonna change my mind on that, I think it's an unforced error, though not a huge one. I can get past it.

Serious question everyone. While I think a complete re-do of season 8 is just unrealistic and stupid, given the success of HotD how would everyone feel about say 3 hours worth of additional content spliced into season one to better close the timeline gaps? Either make certain episodes longer or throw in 20 minutes of stuff in between the multi-year skips.
I know season 1 was rushed because HBO was (rightly) skeptical as to how this would go so they needed to move this along. But now that the people love it I think a lot of people would watch like an HBO extended cut or additional scenes thing.
Also gives young raenyra and Alicent a chance to get more scenes without dumb flashbacks in S2 which none of us want

I don’t like that rhaenys didn’t kill the greens but when she had the chance to be queen succession was ultimately handled civilly and without bloodshed and perhaps the queen who never was held out hope that this could be accomplished again. She’s wrong if course, but she was on the losing end of a succession battle, was allowed to live, and more or less had a decent relationship with the perceived usurper Viserys

This ep was great in what it was supposed to do, give the new monarch time to shine...who gave a top tier performance with his mood swings, establishing Aegon as far less one dimensional than Joffrey. Finally a proper GoT crowning. Rhaenys isn't aware of the book. She can't imagine the length of depravity & slow escalation both sides will go to, to kill her own kin at this point. That's Freefolk brain gigachad logic. Ned kills Jaime in throne room & there's no War of Five Kings. Cat shoulda poisoned Cersei at Winterfell. Tbf a fully Green ep without Rhaenys “good guy triumphal” pandering woulda been better. A Green heavy political intrigue focused ep, with lots of great visuals & ethical quandary. Gonna be a Microwave Attention Span Challenge for the “only here for Daemon making great value Patrick Bateman faces" crowd. I prefer moral dilemma Alicent over ruthless ambitious F&B council Alicent. The nuance of her has been lost on a viewership wanting her to fit the mold of a Disney evil queen. So this is a nudge in the right direction, that things are more grey from here. Her intro as an adult was her falling into Larys trap in harrenhal. So it's not a character change. Aegon & Alicent have been more compelling than the gas light goodie two shoes way Rhaenyra's been portrayed so far. If ur already blaming smallfolk for not supporting Slay Kween...hoo boy do I got bad news! This is the copium ep. Grown men seething watching him wear the crown.

I don’t think they’ll ask Rhaenys “why didn’t you kill them” because Rhaenyra doesn’t want them dead, at least not yet. Both Alicent and Rhaenyra in the show want a clean win. They don’t want to spill any Targaryen blood. Even in the book where Rhaenyra is more brutal she still refused to kill her siblings. She’d want them to bend the knee, she doesn’t want to send them to the wall have or take their heads. If Rhaenys did kill Rhaenyras siblings then I believe she’d be mad at Rhaenys.
Other than that I see a lot of people comparing Rhaenys to Daenerys in regards to killing the small folk. I saw it as Meleys feeding off of Rhaenys desperation to get out. She’s a big boisterous dragon and the dragonpit is her home, shes not used to this many people sharing her space. She’s bound to accidentally kill a few. It’s not like Rhaenys said the famous “Dracarys” and burned anyone in her way. She was there to prove a point and leave, people just happened to be in the way. They haven’t painted her as a saint, a liberator and saviour. She gets things done. But this isn’t her physical war YET.
This is the war of ravens. Both sides don’t want a dragon vs dragon fight. Until Luke’s death the war of fire and blood is yet to begin.
The greens have made themselves a home in Kingslanding and have many “friends” that are apart of everyday life in the red keep. I truly believe if Rhaenys did kill them then it’ll be a generation or two until the city and castle is safe again.
Also the change really foreshadows and helps the storming of the dragonpit and when Meleys head gets carted through kingslanding.

The point of a war of the roses type dynastic rivalry turned civil war is the process of escalation. Neither side starts of saying we're gonna commit the maximum atrocity in the most optimum way like a Bond villain. The march of events force things to spiral out of control. As one side commits something heinous, the other side wants "getback" and it becomes an elevating cycle. Therefore burning everyone down when nothing has happened is some sigma brain stuff but not something a rational actor would do. It's a shame Rhaenys didn't read Fire & Blood to be clairvoyant. If Cat simply poisoned the Lannisters at the Witnerfell feasts then she could've stopped AGOT. Robb Stark should've immediately executed Talissa as a suspected spy. He should've executed Qyburn to save the world. The austrians should've killed baby HitIer. Rhaenys killing a bunch of the peasantry actually adds to the smallfolk's distaste of the Targaryen regime and what they do later.

They left her and her dragon there in kings landing. She would never leave without her dragon. I am guessing no way to get out of the dragon pit except the way she went. I think people reading way to much into like comparing it to season 7/8. Come on really it was one 3 min scene. I actually loved it, looked amazing. She would never kill her own family when the war hasn't even started yet. War doesn't start till aemond kills Luc. Over all I liked the episode and the whole season has been beyond expectations. Episode 10 going to make everyone forget their gripes!!!

Arya killing Night King lasted just a few seconds. The length of the scene is no excuse for bad writing. Of course she wouldn't leave her dragon there, but she could have done things differently. Like squat in the Dragonpit until the innocent people left. A stupid scene in a bad episode.

Last scene. Ned had much better characterisation than Rhaenys. As long as they don’t make a habit of it, it’s fine. But I’m ultimately it’s Alicent that bothered me the most. If they’re not ready for her to turn dark, fine. But I feel like this led to so many changes in the book that for the first time all season, there was more substance in the book than on the screen. Alicent isn’t dark so we can’t keep Vicerys in his room unattended. We can’t go ahead the very specific outline George laid out. Doing things in secret, not hanging a prominent Lord where anyone can find them. The whole thing just seemed sloppy and all over the place.
I know everyone is blaming Hess and I think there’s some validity there. But Condal is in charge and should know better. I just have to wonder if Miguel okayed this, because he doesn’t seem to care about the Lore as much as Ryan does.
A really good in-depth book analysis of this episode (long form) that I agree with is done by Taran Armstrong at RHAP. I used to watch Big Brother and found him then.
You know you’re one of my fav, lol, but his format is a little different. I’d check him out if haven’t heard him.

Don’t forget Rhaenys still believes that Rhaenyra and Daemon are responsible for her sons death to marry shortly after her daughter died.
So it’s logical and understandable if she wouldn’t like Rhaenyra and Daemon that much right now and didn’t feel the need to pick their side in this moment by attacking their enemies.
The Hightowers ‘only’ plotted against her by working together with Vaemond and locking her up after Viserys died. Most of the times that’s not enough to burn them all 😅. But it’s enough to intimidate them and make it clear that you won’t take their shit…

Okay, so Rhaenys is not a kinslayer. Good for her. What about all the SMALLFOLK who died or were injured when Meleys crashed through the f*cking FLOOR?! (That’s not the “beast beneath the boards”; I think that might have to do with Jacaerys’ last flight and/or Blood & Cheese.) I DO think that Rhaenys interrupting the coronation in that manner will reverberate down through the timeline to the eventual Storming of the Dragonpit.
