- californiaairch... JoJo Kincaid was cookin' in the afternoon shift on San Diego's Q-106 back in 1987. Better quality dub than the previous bootleg unauthorized videos that were up on RUclips. Full video available from California Aircheck.
Most people will NEVER know what kind of skill level is required to produce this kind of on-air performance.
Doing local radio from I was 13 to 21 or so, was all my life back then. This guy's delivery is AMAZING! I'm also really in awe of Broadway Bill Lee. That guy's flow is INSANE.
... Prep time and Pre production.. And plenty of Coffee..
Lot better than the crap that passes for radio entertainment now.
@@romegeorgiamanshannongeorg7413 coffee??? Is that right?? That's what it's called?? Lol. A nice cold coke can 😂
And the rush every time you smack a post
I miss the days when this kind of talent was appreciated... Just amazing timing.
Hi Those days were great. I lived in San Diego during this time it was fantastic. Moved back to the UK a few years later.
Tell me about it! Today's DJ's step on the first lyrics after mumbling something incoherent. This guy is great!!!
I was talking to my friend back in Brazil about it. How the passion is lost when working on the radio. We miss it indeed
I am a radio jock from a long time ago. This is what we all wanted to sound like. Talking up the music and hitting the posts. This guy does it perfectly. It made the DJ and the music sound knitted together. Voices that jumped out of the radio was a cool thing. Too bad we don't hear it anymore. All they give us now is stupid Ryan Seacrest.
... and as Lujack said of Dick Biondi and other screaming DJs during an interview on Chicago's PBS station in 2004: if he can make it in Chicago, so can I.
i was in the business for 31 years mostly a drive guy and your right about everything you said. radio is very sad today
If you only knew how many people hated this kind of radio personality. As a kid i used too record songs from the radio with my little tape player. They started to scream and mess up the whole song I was recording 😂
I interned for Jo Jo Kincaid in the Fall of 1984 while he was at Kiss 108 Boston before he made the move to San Diego. I sat in the studio and pulled his records, refiled them, and generally fetched and stepped. I got to watch him work for about six months. It was at the very beginning of my 30 careers in radio. While i worked with some funny morning personalities in my career, I never encountered talent like that. Ever. I had no idea my first brush with a radio personality would be a brush with the G.O.A.T.
I listen to this at least once a month to renew my love for life.
If today's radio DJs were half as talented as this guy I'd actually listen to the radio for the first time in a decade.
This man's talent is extraordinary. His timing is flawless, seamlessly integrating the weekend vibe with crucial station information, such as contest details and music format. It's remarkable how he conveys so much in such a short time, showcasing his prowess as a true entertainer. He makes it look effortless, simply enjoying himself while delivering top-tier content. The music selection is also spot on, perfectly capturing the atmosphere the station aims to create as the weekend approaches. It's an absolute joy to listen to. This is a masterclass in the art of less is more.
This was just on Howard Stern 101 this am. Howard said how talented he was. Coming from a radio family I have to agree. While he doesn't have a classic "radio voice". His energy and ability to run his own boards & keep everything straight, he's a very talented guy!!!
this dude has some serious talent and never misses a post
0:14 He uses the "Ow" in the song (Word Up - Cameo) for the "0" in 106. That is Boss timing.
I know I love that!
Amazing ! Only he can do something crazy like that!
Genious!
@@yecity Genius, genius.
Never seen anyone love their job as much as this guy did.
When someone is SO good at something you cant help but sit back in awe of their skill.
Working the board, pulling carts and pulling off crazy airchecks, DJ's have it easy now in the era of automatic drops.
please SOMEONE tell me what happened to radio like this?? This is enjoyable !!! todays radio... not so much, PLEASE!!! bring this kind of radio back!!
Management happened...
Clear Channel happened
Everything’s sanitized and corporately owned now. Best case you’ll have a local morning show. It’s horrible. Nobody even listens anymore now
Well look at the music he got to play
Same thing that happened to everything enjoyable from the past.
It's juste called MONEY.
This is when Radio was entertaining! This is how is SHOULD be done! Way to go JoJo! I miss radio when is was great like this. It takes talent, timing and forethought to do this. I'm very impressed!
Really, really special. A by-gone era where people in radio media had skill, energy and talent!
This is RADIO ! JoJo has the energy, delivery and personality - what a talent, I'm in awe
Oh, for those radio days to return once again! When I see/hear stuff like this, I always think of the current generation of people who have never heard, and will likely NEVER hear, audio entertainment like this. It was an experience that felt like something was ALWAYS "Happening." Bravo JoJo...and all you "boss jocks."
He's felling the music like a musician, but his contribution is all those words, in time and meter.
Great stuff!
Jo Jo is an old friend, we worked at KSLQ-FM/St. Louis in the 1975-1978 time frame. He was always a great pro, and just as nice off the air. I was at that station for over a decade and was MD when Jo Jo came onboard. He was always willing to help with anything that was needed and a great addition to our staff.
Simply amazing. Radio entertainment at its best.
I worked at same station Jo Jo did in the 70's I came along about a month after he left. He is one of the best high energy DJ's I have ever heard he was truly a inspiration for a young DJ like me at the time.
I can only echo all the praise in the comments here. As a UK jock encouraged to embrace 'the American style' in my early days, I well remember swirling the cart carousels of commercials and jingles and effects, readying them in the cart machines, getting in the vibe of the song on-air (while cueing up the next) and rehearsing my next link on pre-fade to make it as seamless and genuine-sounding as possible. Some days I was in a stinking mood but that 10-20 seconds between each junction was a total performance - you gave it all you got. Theatre. Pat Sharp was the master here in the UK around the time of this vid. He was cookin' too :-)
Had the chance to intern at KISS 108 in Medford Ma when JoJo was there. He taught me SO much about radio....like time, used the music to compliment what you are saying etc etc. This is what a REAL radio jock is supposed to sound like (not like the voice tracked...nothing to say ones that are on the air now.) GO JO JO!!!
This guy truly loves his job. Wish our radio stations were still like this!
I wish we still had his energy in radio today.
JoJo Cookin' Kincaid I salute you sir - this is how 5 o clock on Friday should sound on the radio. He know's the kit, the tunes, the jingles and has an infectious sense of fun. Love it. Sadly nothing like this on the airwaves in the UK! Then - or - now...
He really IS cookin! I wish someone would publish the new years eve mix of 1988. I used to have it on tape, and gradually wore out!
JoJo - one of my biggest inspirations. Such a great talent. When radio was great……miss it.
Oh, JoJo...one of my inspirations to get into broadcasting! I love my job!
Howard said this guy is the best.
this guy was such an inspiration to me I love listening to him on Kiss 108 in Boston
rj lovett hes still on the radio now?
They just played this episode again this am on Howard 101. I HAD to look this clip up. Dude has more energy than a 5yo after 10 pounds of sugar. Lol
An icon. I wish radio was like this today 😭
The most important thing that we can learn from this badass performance is to love what you do. This is so amazing, puts a smile on my face to see him kicking it like this!!
I lived in San Deigo when Jo Jo was on q106 I was a teenager and man was rhis guy great loved listening to him this brings back so much memories
I still have a box full of radio station stickers from San Diego back in the 80s and I have tons of these q106 stickers
can't stop watching this guy he is amazing
Pure entertainment. Pure talent.
Pure passion. My Man!
My dad had the security contract for Q-106 from '87-'90. Every now and he'd take me in to watch all this happen live. So much fun. Also, the break room was reg stocked with goodies. I pretty much wore free Q-106 shirts to school daily for 4 years.
Why is there a big spike in viewing JoJo today? Where did you guys hear about the video? The last time there was a big spike in viewing, Howard Stern played it on his show and he loved JoJo.
His timing is impeccable. I aspire to be this man!
I used to collect music surveys from radio stations, and I have a 13Q (Pittsburgh) survey from '77 with JoJo Kincaid standing shirtless in the snow.
Loved loved him after Sunny Jo on KISS 108 Medfor/Boston. Unbelieveable team.
Fucking savage! I miss doing radio like this. It was a fun time to be on the breeze. Glad I got to do it. Its so much different now sitting in the studio. But there is nowhere else i'd rather be!
Telling from the reference to the big Los Angeles earthquake, this video was recorded on Friday October 2, 1987.
This puts me in a great mood everytime I see it! Outstanding work and performance from a true pro.
Timing, energy, delivery the best of the best. Wow!
I got to work with JoJo in Miami, back in the day! Hi JoJo!
Hi, Mark! And I got to work with YOU! :D
I enjoyed listening to JoJo in the mid-70s at the new KSLQ in St Louis. I still have some tape of him there
JoJo "Cooking" Kincaid Video Airchecks is a top notch! Tight!!! Ran a tight board and hit plenty of posts.
could you imagine JoJo, Jackson Armstrong, and Broadway Bill Lee on the SAME station?
I remember JoJo from WSGN in Birmingham, when he was known as Amaysa Kincaid. He was the BEST!!!
Just a man that loves the shit out of his job.
This guy doesn't even feel like he's at work. He's having hella fun! Very few people can say they love their job this much. That's awesome!
afura1981 You said the exact same thing on JoJo's Disco Show air check!
When radio was actually fun to listen to. This guy was the best of the best!
Look at how much fucking fun he's having.
Steve Brule, those are Koss Pro-4AA headphones. They sound great but are very heavy on the head. I believe you can still buy them. They were very popular with DJs in the 70's and 80's.
The master! AND a genuinely generous dude to a young punk jock like myself backin the day.Watch him run the board too, like he's playing a piano. just a master technician!.
if howard stern is an admirer. you know this guy was good!
WHAT HAPPENED TO DJ'S GETTIN CRAZY AT 5PM. ON FRIDAY'S THIS IS A LOST ART GREAT STUFF WHERE'S WORKIN FOR THE WEEKEND BY LOVERBOY TO GET EVERBODY PUMPED UP !!!! AND HOWARD STERN LOVES THIS GUY
ed evanko Corporate radio is what happened to DJ's and radio like this.
1:40 his timing and using the lyrics in his air check is amazing
He knew how to weave everything together with a great flow and energy.
This dude had to have been on speed. San Diego in the 80s and this level of constant energy. Holy shit
I promise you he wasn't. If you're true talent, you don't need that shit. He was true talent. Radio got him up, all by itself. Every time he opens the mic had better be a work of art (he says to himself), and he delivered.
How much did that man love his job ♡♡♡
Man what timing.
one of the best to ever do it!
That's radio when it was fun!
This is the guy Howard admires.
Song list:
Cameo - Word Up
Loverboy - Working for the Weekend
The Time - The Bird
The Commodores - Brick House
The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want To Have Fun
Cannot drive safely in SoCal w JoJo Kincaid COOKIN' on the radio!!😛😆🤪
Dudes like this made me want to get in to the business. He’s one of the most brilliant jocks I’ve ever seen.
OMG!!! He is perfect,!!! I worked for several stations but never met a talent like this
Bit longer than the old version too... this is pretty much THE best radio video on RUclips. Capital FM, this is how Friday's drive home should sound.
0:15 can't stop laughing
Do you realise how many jocks working on air here in the UK have been inspired by this video,JoJo? Literally 1000's ! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Daaaammmmm this man is good....radio best days ever!!!
An extraordinary talent. Timing in this business was everything.
You can see in his face THE JOY of what he is Doing it. TODAY you CAN´T see this Anymore on the Radio. I was a happy camper for 26 years making this kind of radio but when everything started to be more Squared and less Exciting. Congrats jojo Kincaid! You are AWESOME!!
Words Can Not Describe how Genius This Is
I was one year old when this aired. I feel like I was born a decade too late sometimes....
I wish I loved my job as much as he appears to love his.
Loved listening to this guy whenever I drove to San Diego from L.A., to visit friends stationed down there.
Q-106 was my 1st favorite station
This has me smiling so big my face is hurting. TOTALLY AWESOME! I bet this was and is still a blast to hang around. The world needs more people like this guy!
DAMN this guy is good!
Long gone...those days were truly special with talent like this on your radio...
Another radio man sent me here. I not heard of Kincaid before but he is impressive and reminds me of WKBW's Jackson Armstrong. That energy and fun sadly lacking on today's airwaves.
This guy is great. The way he incorporates the songs into his own speech is just phenomenal. I can picture myself hearing this stuff and just wanting to dance to his awesome song pics and waiting on his next energetic speech.
Third comment on this video. I just keep coming back and watching this over and over. I wish there were more. I don't think it gets any better than this guy. Love him
The music is hot and cookin'! That kind of radio works anywhere! And it can be sold too!
Reminds me of Bill Lee and Jack Armstrong on the BIG 610 KFRC. Energy all the way to the post!
Jack Armstrong was a MASTER!
I thought of Broadway Bill as well!
workin' that board like a champ. Everyone should have this much fun at work.
Never heard of this guy but damn he’s good.
Totally awesome!!!
The way he brought Brick House 🔥🔥🔥
Dude is certainly in his element !
I wish I loved my job as much as this guy.....
What happened to the “real” radio DJ’s... these days sadly seem gone...😢 It was amazing times and he was one of the greats!
This guy is simply the best!
You're a true legend.....respect from the UK!!!
This man cannot fail to put a smile on your face.
