Joan Crawford's bone structure was so remarkably beautiful that even a disfigurement could not spoil her face's perfect symmetry. And here she deserved an Oscar nomination, and an Oscar as well
A Woman's Face is a fantastic film from the late 1940s. This also my favorite Joan Crawford movie actually, it is so reminiscent, beautiful and excellent. Its a shame nobody knows of these films from today, well some might, but I not going to lie, I really like this movie, I feel like it doesn't get much love than other older films. The scene with Conrad Veidt and Joan Crawford is amazing.
One of JC's best. And no real glamour, apart from the Film Noir that sculptured face was born for. When she had the good material and director she was a GREAT actress.
Beautifully put! Crawford's gorgeous face was stunning even when seemingly scrubbed free of makeup. In this film, the expert cinematography captured her iconic face at the height of her beauty in a way that was simply awe-inspiring.
"Women write letters to me. Many letters since A Woman's Face. I read them all, by the way, the letters they call 'fan letters.' They write to me that they like to see me as the lover. This is surprising, perhaps because when I look into a mirror I do not see there a reflection of the young Romeo. But I like to believe they sense the inward thing. For when I say I am the very great lover of all women, I mean precisely that....All the so called weaknesses in women about which men either complain or make fun, are not there for me. For they have their excuses and are charming. I am a very great lover of all women. Like a lover, I am blind to their faults."--Conrad Veidt, Silver Screen Magazine, 1941 ;D
Crawford’s character showed such vulnerability in the first scene, then steeled herself in the second as she went to write the check; then, before exiting, showed an untrusting vulnerability once again. Bette Davis had a beef with her, but it really must’ve had to do with something more than Crawford’s acting ability, because here she’s clearly showing her chops. Very touching and convincing performance.
Bette had eyes for Franchot Tone, who married Joan. That didn’t help, but I think the press wanted a feud between them and did everything to help it along. :\
One of my favourite films - the power of human kindness and its capacity to transform a person. The real transformation in the character is of course her inner self and not her outward appearance.
Conrad Veidt is a marvel in this film!
Conrad Veidt is a marvel in every film!!! Kind greetings.
As is Joan...robbed of an Oscar nomination at the very least
I must add this comment. Both should have received a nomination for the chemistry they displayed
My sentiment exactly. THis scene shows them to be like two perfect counterweights in a Calder Mobile.
Why there was not an oscar nomination I would never understand.... she was fantastic
Politics my dear

Should have been nominated for best actress.
Joan's performances were underrated in 1930s and early 40s.
