I didn't even knew her name, I used to listen to her song through 80's-90's and I just found she passed away now. She was one of my favourite japanese singers.
Lastly, thank you so much for doing this video. I feel that though Japan isn't a very emotional country, Hikaru will need the support of her fans. Even just tweeting her support, making a quick video, writing a blogpost or forum entry... it can reach her and emotional support can really help when coping with a tragic loss. All of us Hikki fans need to make sure that we give her the space she needs, yet re-assure her that we love her and are there for her. Hikki our thoughts are with you.
i am sorry to hear that Fuji Keiko has passed away. i didn't know. I just bought a CD of her in early September when I visited Tokyo and have enjoyed her singing very much. Her voice is very emotional and her songs are all sad lovers' songs. She is probably singing the songs from her inner self and real feeling. Utada Hikaru, you have a great mum. keep up her great singing image!
I remember waking up to this and just being speechless when I read about this. I know how hard it is to have someone with mental illness in the family and I understand how hard it must have been for Hikaru coping with her mother's illness. Japan seems to be such a "stiff-upper-lip" society where no-one talks about their issues or their emotions. It is such a shame to think how Hikaru had to lose her mother to such tragic circumstances when it all could have been avoided.
Keiko was allegedly permanently living in the US so she could have gotten treated easily if she chose to. But Teruzane stated her personal pride which was probably the reason why she didn't. That's great that your friend wants to be counselor, I hope Japan will start being more open about the reality of mental illness. I'm already back from NYC! I did enjoy it, thanks! Hope you had a good trip home from Japan.
I also completely agree about the media. This is horrifying to witness... they are fabricating lies about Hikaru and hounding her at such a devastating time. Reading her statement made it seem like though she was sad, she felt that her mum wasn't suffering anymore. However, seeing her face was so saddening... she looked on the verge of breaking down. To feel like that and have cameras literally shoved in your face must be horrible. Like are they expecting her pose or something? It's just wrong.
I am an avid #MentalHealthAwareness advocate and performer, and I love this so much. I travel the country trying to bring that awareness on stages, in classrooms, hospitals, and on my RUclips channel, so I get excited when I see other advocates. 💙❤
Sorry to comment late. Keiko's death is sad, but at last she can rest in peace. In her late years Keiko Fuji had mental disorder with melancholy, and was heavily addicted to gambles spending huge amount of money, which caused her divorce and collapse of relation to Utada. According to some showbuz news, before those years her husband (Utada's father) used lots of money to get young lovers and desperate Keiko became like an old bitch having young boyfriends who just looked for her money. Also, Keiko was gradually losing sights by eye disease called pigmentary degeneration of the retina. You can imagine how unhappy she was.
Thanks for your support. The songs I recommend would be the one I mentioned, 新宿の女 and 圭子の夢は夜ひらく. Her songs do sound a bit similar because of the style in the '70s but her vibrato is just amazing.
Mental illness in Japan is really hush-hush, as you already know. In result, they also don't have a good counseling system, which is probably why Fuji Keiko was never properly treated. One of my best friends in Japan wants to be a counselor, which is REALLY rare--most people don't want to even think about that kind of thing. Also, I agree with you on the tabloids and paparazzi. It's sick and sad. Annnnd I hope you enjoy NYC. c:
RIP - Keiko Fuji I too suffer from Bipolar Disorder...and I can very much identify with her illness. Sadly, a very large percentage of those with Bipolar Disorder do commit suicide. Keiko was "medication resistant," which means that she did not comply with doctor's orders. Keiko's behavior had become more and more bizarre over the past few years. Keiko was an Enka legend; I have most of her albums. As a mental health professional, I can attest to the fact that there is a very negative stereotype in Japan. I hope that the family can recover from this...and that they can both get on with their lives. Paparazzi are scum...if you are a fan of Hikki-chan, please respect her right to privacy and give her the personal space that anyone would need after such a tragic event. BTW, there is also a very rare track of Hikki singing a duet with her Mother. Do a RUclips aearch for "Golden Era." It is a marvelous song.
hikkipedia Thanks...I am fine. I hope that Hikki and Teruzane are recovering. I was shocked when I saw the pictures of Hikki. I only wish that I had been one of Hikki and Teruzane's bodyguards on that day, because there would have been a lot of broken cameras on the street. On a happier note, there is a YT video slide show with Keiko and Hikki singing a duet of "Golden Era," from back in the old U3 days. The whole family was on that cut. I think Hikki was 12 when they recorded that song. Please check the song out, if you haven't already. The physical resemblance between Keiko and Hikki is pretty strong. Ai to heiwa!

I love her songs. A part of me has died. 私は彼女の歌が大好きです。私の一部は亡くなりました。
I don't know, but now when I hear "Shinjuku no Onna", it makes me feel melancholic

The dude who stabbed a bunch of people at a mental hospital in Japan acknowledged mental illness

Mori Soba This breaks my heart😢
I just found her music today, fantastic music!

She was one of the greatest Enka singers, her was was pure pain exploited in music, what an artist e had lost.

Ai to heiwa!
This makes me so depressing and sad T-T
Any books in English about the status of mental illness in Japan? very interested
Very well said, thank you!
Yeah, I’m shocked.
It's not true that we're unemotional or indifferent. It's just that we don't cry in public
1year ago today.... R.I.P.
Aw thanks :)
Agreed, thanks!
Your English is fine! Danke
Rest in peace, Keiko-san.
I wonder why she committed suicide with all that money
She had a severe mental illness. Money doesn't buy happiness.
Thanks! I got a free lipstick sample that I used :p
