  • I've been a ProTools User now for going on 20 years. I wanted to make a mixing template for a buddy John from BETTER DRUMMER, that he could use in his workflow to improve the audio in his videos that he posts to youtube. Problem is... he doesn't mix or record in Protools... He doesn't have a DAW at all! I wanted to keep things as CHEAP as possible so we went with FREE PLUGINS and a FREE mixing and recording DAW REAPER! Oh And I'm Using mostly STOCK Plugins... Yes the Plugines BUILT into REAPER to mix his drums! Lets see if I can figure this out!

$60 US for a lifetime personal/small business ($20,000 or less a year made using REAPER) is indeed a steal. The trial is a trial of the full program. No limitations. Never gonna touch anything that requires a subscription model because 1: I hate subscriptions for software and 2: Why bother when the competition doesn't use a subscription or iLok type method of accessing your software?
That said, if you're cool with those things, use the DAW you want. I just don't like it personally, no matter how good the product may be.

Instead of routing tracks to a bus you can tuck tracks within a folder. This way you can have tracks nested within each other just like directories in a file system. In a drum folder you might have a kick folder (with kick in + out), a snare folder (with top and bottom mic), and so on, where everything in a folder shares the same processing. Super easy, intuitive, and useful.

I also gave PT10 & 11 a try, which was a miserable failure for me. The workflows just didn't jive with the way my mind thinks and likes to work. While Reaper is definitely my go-to these days I keep them all around (at least the versions I own/have paid for) for various things here and there. Options are never a bad thing. REAPER user here, and I have to say the power is in the customization. It took me a while to get me my ideal setup, but once there workflow is incredible.
I'd suggest setting your most highly used keyboard shortcuts the same as your other DAW (PT in your case), same with mouse behavior. There's nothing inherently good or bad about REAPER's stock bindings. I came from Ableton and customized towards cross-fluency with that, and now that I also use LUNA, I slightly adjusted towards LUNA fluency.
Other things to check out are custom skins (White Tie Imperial and its derivatives are beautiful and I personally use a highly customized derivative), SWS extensions (ESPECIALLY auto-color which colors your tracks based on naming rules), and auto-normalize (which I use to roughly level clip volumes as a first gain stage).
    For hardware -- ReaInsert.

"If I had a better GPU, I would do the rough cut of videos in it" - reaper doesn't use GPU for video processing so if you're running into an issue with video playback it's probably something else, like not using VLC for playback decoder. Just so you know, you can always hit the undo button if you get into trouble, also when you close your session you'll have an opportunity to say NO to saving the changes. Two powerful features that have saved me more times than I'd like to admit. More advanced users should have a bunch of other things to add but mine is the most entry level things that a beginner can access. :)

Forgive me if someone mention already mentioned it, but while Reaper has a very generous demo period and policy, it is not ‘free’. That said, it is absolutely terrific in my opinion (PT and Reaper are my daily drivers, but I also use Cubase, Logic Pro & Studio One, so I’ve tried quite a few).

You might want to reach out to him to talk about doing a similar video. He is a REAPER master and incredible teacher.

Logic pro, studio one, harrison mixbus, cubase, mixcraft9, cakewalk by bandlab, abelton live, FL Studio, I mean these DAWS do killer amazing things and most of the workflows are super handy and powerful.

Is this phase "fix" for real? People should know that the start of the waveform should be at the same time for this "fix" to work, even then it is not that simple as it is not possible to make everything in phase with everything, some decisions must be made.

One mistake you made is that you said Reaper is free. It is not free. There is an evaluation time which stays for ever until you buy it. It is only $60 and you get the current version 6 all the way to version 7.99. Well worth it for only $60. You can change the tempo at any time. You need to change the setting in the project settings for that.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
