Nice vid! How does this kit compare to the Motorsport AOS sold by Porsche?
+Hans Westerbeek supposedly much better and more effective. Hopefully the inventor can chime in here with a full explanation
Hans the Motorsport AOS has the exact same diaphragm as the original AOS , The UAOS uses a diaphragm that is twice as thick and places it in a location that can be accessed in minutes ( not hours like the Motorsport AOS) .. Also the Motorsport AOS has a much larger body that holds oil to keep it from going into the intake but this large amount of oil lowers the oil level in the sump and therfore can cause oil starvation issues when at high G-Force turns.....With the UAOS with Track drain there is two drains to the sump and therefore you can run extra 1-quart of oil in the sump.....There are many other advantages of the UAOS...including the warning system and the lower cost over time.....therefore it is superior to the factory AOS and the Motorsport AOS....
@@charlesbrazeel3684 thanks for the info!
Thnx for the clarification!
21:30 Tip, use the correct socket E14, and a long-enough extension fitted over the bolt, should take no more than a couple of whacks with your favourite rubber, non-marking mallet or attitude adjuster, to force the bolt the correct distance. I use this same method force and remove the bolts on my Boxsters Alternator, whilst many, many complain on the forums, it takes them the better part of the day, to remove the bolts on their Boxsters Alternators. I thank you for your entertainment and sharing.
+Charlie Wolf thanks! 🍻
To facilitate removal of the upper roller bolt you can jack up the engine. As you discovered, doing this job from the top is the way, but kudos for showing the whole process. It's generally good practice to spray cleaner on the oily areas to help identify leaks later or even better to confirm they are fixed. I find dedicated handheld spring clamp pliers excellent for stuff like this because even if you knock them they never let go. Also, the lower AOS clamp is accessible via the right rear wheel well. Cheers.
+Stefan Shapiro thanks for the additional info as always! 🍻
Who knew an 8mm socket fitted onto an E10 head.
Another great tip, keep them coming, really enjoying all the videos 👍👍
+Rich Turbo will do!
Interesting AOS. I agree the alternator on my Cayman was a beoch to get out and even harder to get in 😊
+Hugh Mann oh man don’t remind me 😂
I think the UAOS is a great idea. I had three AOS failures in approximately 5 years. Each time filling my intake with oil. And never really smoked until it was too late. It is a pain to replace but a bigger pain to clean the entire air intake path. The magic is the relocation and the fault light on dash. Therefore I just ordered the UAOS. 986. 2.7L 👍
+Joe-serious Howard awesome! Tell him I sent you 😉
@@HelpMeDIY Can do. 👍
I have the same model of 2006 Cayman S and have replaced the AOS 3 times by now (It currently has 125,000 miles). This looks like a viable alternative to replacing the AOS every 40,000 miles or so.
+mike dx definitely! 👍
Maybe replace the PCV at the same time
That was a great video, Aaron! But, I have to say, it looks like a royal PITA install and I hope I never have to do it. Okay now, can you take some tough love? It bugs me no end how dirty your engine is. I rinse my 997 engine almost every time I wash the car to keep it clean. Is the Cayman a total pain to wash? I guess you'd have to R&R that alum engine cover. Is there a window to keep the water out of the interior? I couldn't live with a dirty engine like that! Maybe the problem is with me??? Never thought of myself as OCD but now you have me thinking...
+Tom Fitch thanks! Yeah, I can take it :)
It was tough, but it was all the track addition piece. The standard kit was actually really easy. Yes it would be a lot harder to clean and nothing to keep water out of the interior.
I like it, Would be interested to see whats been done to the original AOS? like has it just been gutted of internal parts like the diaphragm with it now being moved external so its an empty aos - catch tank with sensor - external pcv? makes it so much easier to change.
+@Mark_Meisho_Thompson I don’t know the specifics but reach out to the maker and I’m sure he would be happy to discuss with you.
Thanks .... as always .... but given the extensive install process (and cost) I think a good quality Catch Can will do (basically) the same.
+@brianb347 it’s not for everyone! 🍻
I’m literally working on an AOS guide right now for the 987.. Small world! I’m just starting so very much sure that your guides are the golden standard sir
PS congrats on the sponsorship :’]
+RuslanVideoFilms i assume you already bought a new AOS, but I would definitely get this one if not!
+RuslanVideoFilms thanks!
Instead of buying the track kit and having to remove the alternator, ect to install, could you drill and tap or use a nut and attach a hose tail to the oil filler neck part near the fill cap ?
+Jay Sybrandy I think you would lose the gravity that this solution depends on to drain
Im surprised you didn't clean the area around the oil fill tube before removing it. By chance, will these fit 987.2?
+Bluray well… that’s a really tough spot to get to for cleaning, then it would take a while to dry so… would have been nice I agree. Unfortunately 987.2 is a different engine and there is currently to UAOS for it.
@@HelpMeDIY thanks for the reply. Love your videos
@@bluray4687 thank you!!! 🙏
Excellent clearly spoken voyage of discovery
Well done 🏴🇺🇸🙏
+Iain Mcglynn thank you sir! 🍻
My friend, would gunked up coolant and old transmission fluid cause the cayman to shut engine off when driving?
+Ventura Carmona quite possibly!
Where can we buy the release tool? Thanks
Hi. Along with this video, I've been following your engine removal video saga. I have a 2011 Boxster Spyder bought new coming up on 200K miles. Have had sports cars all my life (British and Japanese) but this is my first Porsche. I have to say I am really disappointed with the difficulty in the serviceability of this car. What a rats nest of hoses and wiring with minimal space to get at bolts and clamps. Seems like cruel and unusual punishment for a guy (or gal) to try and maintain. Thanks for your vids and good luck with your engine rebuild and reinstall.
+Terry L Vallon wow that’s a lot of miles! Glad you’re driving it like it’s meant to be driven 😎
These are the only cars I’ve ever done any engine type work on and I appreciate being able to get to 3 sides of the engine fairly easily. But yes, certain areas are no fun!
@@HelpMeDIY Got to have a lift for these babies! Otherwise, ugh! Thanks for comment
@@tlv7257 I have a lift but I didn’t use it at all 🤷♂️
Edit: oh you mean in general, not for the AOS I think
Great video! I have the same kit and planning to attempt the install this weekend. How long did it take you? Do you have any additional tips that came to you after installation? 🙂
+Jason Freeman thanks! I did it over a couple days, but with the video to help should go much faster :)
@@HelpMeDIYI hope it's faster but the track drain part looks like a big pain in the ass lol
@@HelpMeDIYdo you have to remove the alternator or do you think it can all be done from the top after removing the plenum?
@@jasonfreeman509 not sure. I’d try without removing it first if I were you. Report back and let us know!
There is some strange looking material stuffed into the large pickup tube. What is it and what is its purpose?
+jerry wentworth Yes it is supposed to be there. It is a knitted solid copper single thread mesh that uses the surface tension of the oil to separate the oil from the air to improve efficiency.
@@HelpMeDIY I wonder if this might also help impede oil from slushing up that tube and overwhelming the AOS in dynamic situations where oil has accumulated in that corner of the engine such as high G turns and acceleration??
By chance do you know if this kit will easily fit with a IPD Competition Plenum and GT3 Throttle body? I have a modified '07 Cayman S. The IPD Plenum only has one breather tube connection point on the right side.
+Drive Maui good question… contact Skip and ask him
@@HelpMeDIY thx, waiting for reply from support... hopefully it will be Skip
@@drivemaui7548 awesome. Let us know!
@@drivemaui7548 Did you ever find out if this works with an IPD plenum? I have the same concern.
for this video only being 6 months old, I'm surprised that the ultimate AOS website is broken. The product links don't work.
+Aeneas137 I’ll let him know, thanks for pointing it out!
If only the kit can tap the oil drain hose directly onto the existing oil fill tube, this kit would have been a lot easier to install, avoiding removing the alternator, removing the existing oil fill tube, etc.
+Chitown 388 yeah that’s the hard part for sure.
Is this oil separator a reason to leak oil at the engine ?
Sorry I don’t understand your question
Does this fit on the 1998 boxster 986?
+Shawn yes!
Nothing worth achieving is easy but after it’s finished that feeling of accomplishment may last up to five seconds 😂
+Iain Mcglynn I got at least a few minutes out of this one 😆
@@HelpMeDIY I thought you would Aaron but didn’t want you disappointed if not . Can’t believe the lack of bleeps 😂. The early pioneers had just a covered wagon and a fire 🔥 but they blazed a trail just like you’re doing with your videos
They didn’t even have wi-Fi , how did they manage 🙉
@@iainmcglynn833 I try to save them for injuries
But this "U"AOS starts at almost $800! Almost 8 times more expensive than a Porsche part! Another over priced part then the seller makes claims Porsche ones fail or other unfounded problems just to shill his product. Nice to get one for free but not worth the money just to move the diaphram to an easier location.
+YBSS Ride the problems if fixes are far from “unfounded”, and it’s much cheaper than the Motorsport AOS model, which does not solve the problems that this one does so 🤷♂️
@@HelpMeDIY There were over 150k 986's made (my car) about an equal amount of 996's. If an oem AOS lasts just 10 years then owners are buying over 20k units every year yet you go on the forum and the sponsors claim failure is epidemic. They actually rarely fail but on the forums they are more about selling expensive parts from sponsor vendors so this and other issues are greatly exaggerated. Now, it would have been nice if they made the diaphram replaceable on the oem unit. Just reach back and twist off the cap (like VW). Hmm, if only I was the inventor type.😀
Ps - I replaced my 24 year old, 90k mile, original AOS but it was working just fine.
I had a old Ford 5.0 that I put over 250K miles on the original spark plugs but I wouldn't recomend any else do that. Good luck with your Boxster...
