    So what you're saying is that not all notes have to be the same size in the piano roll? How would we know which ones should be short and which long. Isn't it better to simply have them all the same size.

      @Whenuknow  4 месяца назад +17

      id say the notes you want to emphasize should be the ones you lengthen (but expermient for urself here), when musicians play instruments they kinda do this instinctively but when we r composing on a computer we need to manually add in all these samll variations to get the same feel

      I agree that it should be mostly instinctively. You can't always explain groove, but you can feel it.

      If your play your melodies on a midi controller, for an example, you see that the notes are not even. Some are longer, shorter. This gives a natural feeling in my opinion. Off course, you can always put the notes, on the grid, if it´s sounding off.

      @@rachidow2125 To piggy back on that comment, Imagine your electronic instrument as something you actually play. It's easy to slip into the pitfall of clicking in notes and not humanizing them. I think what can be really helpful is study some bass players and even import bass playing audio . If you have an AI ripper, just extract the basslines in some old funk music and study what they look like. When you actually learn to play your midi keyboard, this starts to become a little easier I feel. I think most importantly, you have to establish a general groove with the drums in order to help you come up with something "Groovy". There are also midi packs out there that probably have pre-programmed midi basslines you can study. Cheers

    Yea I love this! That’s right when you take concepts used in writing sheet music or writing for traditional instruments, it really does make sense. Thanks for making this!

    Amen ..you are wise beyond your years ma man. SPACE is a sound ! People now a days focus too much on the complexity of the sound instead of focusing on the most important part THE GROOVE

    This is key when it comes to writing synth solos. its crazy how much of a difference just note lengths make alone, not to mention velocity and filter variations.

    Yes adding groove to your pattern gives feeling, also adding space between bars gives it time to breathe and adds tension especially after 16 bar or 32 note or this case 4th bar

    Simple, groove and space is my mantra. Ooh I would like to add, Bruce Swedien who helped Michael Jackson record thriller would leave space before he would bring in a new sound so the you would notice it.

    For a night owl, going to bed so early, very early, is priceless. but RUclips tutorials turn me on. Obviously it also depends on who makes them and how they express themselves. I'm starting the night, I won't post anymore, as it couldn't have been better!

    It's the feel and the emotions that make a track beautiful and memorable. I started my journey in electronic music from house in the mid 90's and just staying in this genre it's plenty of beautiful tracks made with few elements. Think about the old all time hits. They could even sound bad compared to modern tracks but it's the idea, the right choice of those few elements and how they are programmed/arranged that make those tracks what they are, not the maniacal attention to sound design (which as you said, could make the track lacking of soul most of the times). Moreover, back in the day they were making music with machines, and the limitation increase creativity requiring deep learning and experimentation with the instrument/machine.
    Btw, in your first example it's like you've basically put just the long notes of the bass because the attack of the short notes doesn't sound like a bass but more like a toned percussion making a swinged 16th groove under a bass pattern of long/mid notes...Not so intuitive as example, imho. 🤝
