Guitar Improvisation Tips 8: Soloing Over Changes pt1
Welcome to the eighth part of my new series of guitar improvisation and phrasing tips.
In this lesson, we look at an accessible way to get into soloing over non-diatonic chord changes by taking two of the same chord type (in this case, two minor 7th chords) and moving them up and down chromatically. For example: spending 2 bars on Bm7, followed by 2 bars on Cm7. This forces us to play into the harmony of each chord. However, we can begin by playing slower subdivisions, such as half notes and working our way up to 8th or 16th notes. It’s a fun way to practice!
I let the B to C Dorian backing track run throughout the video and at the end, so you can try out some of the ideas for yourself.
Please note that there is no TAB for this lesson as all of the licks are improvised (including the mistakes!)
Have fun!

@@BobbyHarrisonGuitarthank you!
You are a superb player of most styles. Where did you do you studying and what courses did you take.
Thank you very much. I’m
Mainly self-taught, but I took lessons with Phil Hilborne when I was younger and he helped a lot. There’s no substitute for a good one-to-one tutor.
I just realised that you are left-handed and the you flip the video to look like you are right-handed. Interesting. The question is - why?
When the video is lesson-based, I always flip it. It makes it easier for the vast majority of people to follow (including some lefties). People have complained in the past, if I haven’t flipped the video.
@@BobbyHarrisonGuitar I thought that might be the case. Many thanks for these excellent videos. Although they are little above my current standard, I immensely enjoy watching them. Keep up the super work.
@@BobbyHarrisonGuitar Maybe you could print a teeshirt that is reversed and wear it in your videos. That would really be fun.
@@roll-outcommanders6520 I’ve wanted to do that for ages!
