This week in Episode 7 of Motonosity Real Talk, I discuss the incredibly controversial (if youtube comments are any indication, which I suppose they aren't haha) topic of motorcycle mirrors! That is, which are the best? A lot of the comments surfacing on my Near Crash video (link below) have been about the mirrors on the bikes in the video. Each bike has a left bar end mirror. Are bar end mirrors okay to have? Are stock/regular mirrors better? Am I an idiot for having a bar end mirror? All of these questions shall be answered!

I definitely wouldn't do dogs with your vlogs. I was annoyed for the first two minutes with you just talking about it and not the the subject in the video title. Good info though.
Just started riding again up here in NH after a loooooooong winter of watching lots of motovlogs and you are totally right, I can't see a thing behind me! I had someone tailgating me this morning and I wouldn't have known if I didn't head check. Definitely getting one for the left side! Good topic brotha.
I've been riding since 1984, and have 400,00+ miles under my belt. I found stock mirrors don't give me full field of view, so I rode with bar end mirrors that have the ability to fold in. I eventually only used left mirror. I rely on the old head check while riding. I use mirror to keep an eye on cars behind me while stopped at lights. I stay in gear until I see the vehicle behind me stop, then go to neutral.
You start the video three blocks from my house! Haha! Good job!
Track days=more fun!
Great vid! Think I'll invest in one of those bar end joints!
Ha I'm in Austin as well, and I'm researching bar end mirrors for my Aprilia RSV4. Thanks for the video.
ANNOYING. Try the idea of talking about your topic.
hello motonosity, i have a question. did the mirriors affect you ability to filter?
Nice vid, you crack me up! You must be like me, when I get thinking or talking to much, I lose track of where I am even though I may know the area like the back of my hand, and end up having to turn around like you did when the road turned into a one-way. Had to chuckle because I've done the same things too.
I was planning to get bar end mirrors coz I'm having same difficulty as yours specially when wearing my jacket. Kinda annoying and I always need to move my arms inwards just to check everytime.
Thanks for the good info man.
I had Rizoma Prototype mirrors on my 06 R6 and they worked and looked really awesome. Not a fan of bar end mirrors on supersports, but a lot of people do like them. I have CRG Arrow mirrors on my Speed Triple... they look cooler than the circular ones IMO.
My stock mirrors got to where they moved on me at normal highway speeds and when i had them positioned correctly to see behind me all i saw was my shoulder/arm and the ditch/curb.
I have only ever had bar end mirrors on my sv. I had thought about getting stock mirrors for a bit simply because these mirrors do sit low and i do have to completely take my eyes off the road to check them. I see arguments from both sides though and i do plan to keep my bar ends.
Do you happen to know what kind of mirror you have? Some of the ones online are upwards of $110 each.
I've got bar ends on my bike for the same reason as you. Broad shoulders. But what I find with the convex mirrors is that they make it really difficult to gauge distance and depth. Sure, I'll know that someones behind me, but no idea how far behind. But they're still better than no mirrors, for sure. And they look badass as hell.
Im short so i feel like i have to look for the mirror if i install these bc i would have to sit back higher in the seat to see behind me. The rabbit ear ones are right there in front so its easier
I have 2 bar end mirrors, should I return them and only use 1?
They teach you in the msf course to always do head checks even if you looked through your mirrors. They even said you should be doing head checks when driving a car also not just motorcycles
First of all, I love how your bike sounds even at low RPMs. Secondly I agree, bar ends definitely work better. I still have stock mirrors on my bike but when I rode my friends I could see a lot easier instead of pulling in my elbows to see behind me. Great vid!
Been riding my SV650 starter for a month now. Definitely struggling to see what's around me. Maybe I can dork it up and go with both bar and mirrors and the OEMs.
What is your exhaust setup. Bike sounds nice, I have a GP slipon, same bike and it sounds decent to me. Thanks.
I think two mirrors are kind of important since if you're in a long sweeping turn like on a highway you won't be able to see behind you (right hand turn, left mirror will be facing outside of the turn and vice versa). I do prefer how a single bar end mirror looks though.
Thanks for the opinion. I am considering bar end mirrors for my HD 750 Street. As the stock mirrors are horrible. Can only see my shoulders.
+Mike Wigington Seconded
Hi! Kind of interesting even if I never thought about mirrors much, but I have more or less the same problem cause I'm to wide and fat at the moment. How do you manage to do all these videos? Good work!
Motonosity, I've been debating on whether or not to take my stock mirrors off my GSXR1000. I head check constantly, but in a way I like to have the recognition of seeing whats slightly behind me or to my shoulder. How much can you see visually with the bar end mirror?
I've also got the sv650 but have no problems seeing behind me with stock, i just don't like them much. I'm from the uk and filter / lane split traffic all the time so how useful do you think bar end would be? I would imagine it would be easier as you have more maneuverability in tight spots even though they are wider on the bike. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks
Plz reply once u can I got a bar end mirror but I only have the left one how do u see wats behind you on the right I rode with it for about an hour Nd I had to keep lookin bacc or should I try to angle it to where I can see alil of the right side o normally ride in the left lane so yeah someone reply plz
I cant see anything out of my stock mirrors (r6 ) and i still have them on, i dont really look at them bc im crazy and keep it on a swivel
I agree with not being able to see out of stock mirrors , I can't anyways , my jacket and arms get in the way , I have a 2015 650 ninja and the mirrors help verry little and I have to move my arm out of the way to use my mirror , that's me anyways , and also I agree with the not turning your head back because of your mirrors I never turned back because I was depending on my mirrors which was stupid of me , but this video helps alot , thank you and ride safe 👍
If you haven't checked out the Reevu helmet, it has rear view hard ware built into the helmet. It's an interesting design...from what I hear it isn't good for a detailed view, but you can see generally what's going on behind you.
Looks like others have said it too, but "convex" is what you were looking for.
I used to have bar ends, I just recently went back to an oem...reasons:
1: My bar enders were shitty and they would fold in on the highway (one of them came off going 80ish)
2: I'm thin, so I'm not hard to see around :D
3: I lane split and I don't need my bike to get wider(I used to constantly hit car mirrors with them on)
Other than that, bar ends are amazing, for the reasons you mentioned and many more! One is good but two for the highway, cuz headchecks are annoying with the wind and all!
Where u get that short clutch lever from
Just put crg hindsight bar ends on my bike, left and right. I can see ALLOT more in these mirrors.
:D loved the "I love you, man" reference at the start! YES
Can't agree with you more man! Very well said
Opposite of Concave - Convex
i bought the crg hindsights to replace my OEM sv650 mirrors.....best upgrade i have made....looks AND performs way better, as you mentioned.
i also have the same grips (gold D3) as you. i absolutely hate them (especially the metal interior near the thumb). do you actually like them?
are those crg shorty levers on your bike? do you like them? i almost pulled the trigger on those but they are a bit expensive. you should do a vlog on shorty vs. standard levers.
I agree with you Moto, I still have factory mirrors on my Raven and they suck. Love the bike but those mirrors have to go. I'm about 170lbs and 6 ft tall and my body covers half of the view in my mirrors. You should be doing headchecks anyway (which you are), but I'm about to pull the trigger on CRG's Convex Arrow mirrors (one for each side). They fold inward for those who lane split and just pop back out when you want. Great video though looking forward to more.
I dropped my bike a couple of days ago, and broke my right side mirror. Replacing it with the OEM mirror is costly, and a pain in the ass. I was thinking about bar end mirrors, and blocking off my mirror mounts. The question I have is, I currently use bar ends and it helps with drops, and vibration dampening. If I remove those and put bar end mirrors on, do you see an increase in handlebar vibration?
I may be wrong but basically bar end mirrors are basically bar ends cause i could tell that the mirrors did not vibrate one bit when riding only when i took my hands off the bars at redlights
I have 2 bar end mirrors, napoleon mirrors to be exact, and your right they are damn good
It should not matter what type of mirrors you have or if you have mirrors at all. Because if you are a good and aware rider you should be head checking every time you plan to turn or merge into a different lane. And the thing with mirrors and the type you have is just personal preference and/or the way you want your bike to look.
This is perfect. I was just arguing about this with my friends!
My SV has regular style mirrors on it, and I am not overly wide. Still, I can't see a damn thing. They are positioned terribly as you point out, and they vibrate a lot. I am considering bar ends myself, but it's not top priority since frankly I head check so much that I'm not the least bit concerned with mirrors.
nice topic, For me i use the OEM mirrors with convex mirrors added to them. But thats what im used to, that and a lot of head checks, So Questions, a great place to eat in Austin is ? I ask due to i might be headed that way in a few weeks, or so from Dallas, Just for the ride, Few friends and myself just take random rides and gone for the day, Being Austin is only 200 miles away, should be a good ride. Thanks
So true those mirrors rock!!
I think that the mirror you have is fine.i always double check ill look in the mirror then ill physically turn and look. so i guess it depends on the drivers preference when it comes to mirrors
Where are you from ?
No rev match downshift?
It's not too bad. I've formed a habit and I can do it with speed and ease. Doing simple shoulder checks isn't enough. You can't really see too far behind you and you can't gauge people's speeds who are just behind you. That being sad, the bar-ends are just too small to give you good depth/speed perception. I saw a guy with both bar-ends and mirrors and that seems like the best option for safety at least.
hey,Mr. Motonosity sir, i wanted to know if u could do a video on restricted bikes..as in if a person should buy a normal starter bike or if they should buy the bike they really want and restrict it (throttle stop)..that way they dont have to sell the 250 when they want to upgrade(because they never had one...lol) instead they can just remove the restriction..this is a problem to me cuz i live in the Caribbean where buying and selling bike is an issue because they are not as available :) thnks
I can see better with my left bar end mirror then my stocc but imma just b weird and ride with a left bar end and an oem right mirror
Not sure about the whole bar-end mirrors. I rode my friends R1 for a week that had just the left bar-end mirror so I have experience with it. For me at least, they make depth perception particularly hard. A lot of the time, cars that seem far away are in actuality much closer and this is a huge risk to me. I don't like that they had a wider range of view yet significantly less surface area. It means its harder to see things behind you and you cannot really details behind you
For example, I constantly speed and even when I'm not speeding I'm always checking my mirrors and looking around for cops. Sometimes I can literally see people texting inside their cars from my mirrors. Most of the people I've talked to about them seem to only like bar-ends for aesthetics...they say the mirrors look horrible. I understand for most people and myself that normal mirrors are more annoying to use, but its not hard. Just bend your elbows inward a little, position your head, and look!
I go without mirrors. I never found myself using them so I just took the mirrors off. It gives it such a cleaner, race bike look
I feel like I would get confused with being able to see my right side in the left mirror
I'm about to take the MSF course in California. I'm 18, have had a valid Class C with no violations or tickets for over a year. I looked at the DMV Cali site, and I'm kind of confused about one thing. If I take the permit, pass, then show my completion of the MSF course, do I need to wait 6 months with my permit, or do I get my official license right away? I'll be kind of pissed off if i have to wait... I'd think only minors have to wait..
I agree
I have the same problem with the stock mirrors on my ER-6. I have to pull my elbow in and lean a bit to be able to see anything useful. This has forced me to get into the habit of always looking over my shoulder so there's a silver lining in there too. :) I'd be concerned what would happen if the police pulled me in with only a bar mirror. I live in the UK, could anyone shed some light on where I'd stand with the law and only a bar mirror?
Which motonosity is this???
also... slappin da base... great line from an obscure movie.. lol
Stock mirrors suck for me... Have to move my arm in jus to see on the side & i can never see behind me. Head checks is a must for me. I'll definitely have to check into bar ends! Always wondered how well they worked! :)
i had the same problem with the stock mirrors , that is why i changed to bar-end mirrors :)
Ain't it harder to filter tho? Since your bike gets broader.
bar end mirror is the same without mirror. because you look down to it and to make sure no car in your blind you have to turn your head to look. i actually modify my barend mirror and i put them into the clutch bolt and brake bolt. look my strretfighter video. and see what it look like.
I cant stand the stock mirrors on my gsxr. they are too small i find. Ill have to find out if bar ends are legal in ontario...
I don't think it matters at all what type of mirrors you have. Every rider should always be doing head checks,
motonosity (a) .. you left your blinkers ooooon! ^^
and another plus of a bar end mirror is that they look better
im a fat ass and on my 2007 zzr600 i can see with the stock mirrors perfectly but when i had my 2003yzf thundercat i couldnt go with what makes you safe!!
I can see around myself either. It sucks.
slappin da bassssss!
Comfort zone is #1.. what's legal in the area you ride in. Some places, you can get away without mirrors.
I live in Cali and splitting lanes is legal. I really want bar ends but it will add inches to the space i need to split. I already need a yard to split safely..
For everyone that constantly rely on your mirrors, DON'T be lazy. You have blind spots, turn your head real quick and look..
Dude don't try to make the argument that one mirror is better than two. We agree with you. Those bar end mirrors provide more vision. Now get the right-side bar mirror and you'll be even safer. Stop being lazy or cheap. :)
Head checks will be better than any mirror on the market
A separate channel would be great for the dogs. Or even if you put a few clips of the huskies at end of your videos :D
Depending on your body and riding position, sometimes stock mirrors are near worthless Convex mirrors give you a larger range of visibility. Good topic! Good luck on the house
My Sv mirrors suck. I know what ya mean. I kind of lean down to see in my mirrors. I do still like having a large mirror. Temped to try bar ends or both... Might look dumb but Idc. As long as I can see.
i have the thundercat. it's fine. you just gotta bend your elbows inward a bit
you're definitely right, stock mirrors seem to suck. On my bike i can just see past my shoulders and i'm not even particularly big
You're not safe unless you have your stock mirrors, bar end mirrors, and a helmet mirror, actually, don't even look ahead, just use mirrors. - I say as long as you do head checks who cares what you have
convex mirror :)
I'd subscribe to a second channel for the more personal stuff if you would want to do that!
bar end mirrors look great on some bikes.. not so great on others...
Guess he never seen mirror extensions...
Waited and waited and gave up. Didn't hear anything about the title.
ive got a fairly skinny frame so the stock mirrors work ok for me, Although i hardly really Use my mirrors unless im afraid some asshole i just passed is going to try to run me down. So most of the time im doing headchecks. I dont like bar end mirrors because its right next to my hand, and if the bike gets dropped thats usually the first thing to hit. so if i Did have a bar end mirror, id still have the stock mirrors. cuz if you accidently break that bar end of and a cop sees you without any mirror your pretty boned. so id leave mine on.
I know what you mean about stock mirrors!
I have to move my arm to see behind me reasonably.
I know a quicker way downtown..
i can't hear you its too noisy
khaled6100 🎧needed
I have to replace my right one because it keeps falling and it made me think....the only time i ever use my mirrors for is to check for cops behind me before I'm about to have a little fun. I head check when i change lanes all the time and can't remember the last time i just used mirrors to change lanes..f#ck that lol.
bar end mirrors are so much better than stock mirrors. looks better, you can see wayyyyy more behind you, they take away mirror vibration at speed, you can see in the right lane from your left bar end mirror, and its alot safer for seeing more action of people behind you. F***THE HATERSSSSSS =)
convex surface
Nah!!
bar end mirrors for suree
I am the same as you and just took the mirrors off my R1 and zx 14r, nothing is better than just turning your dam head to see, we are so lazy we can't even do that
Don't know if I should be impressed by how broad your shoulders are or maybe that bike's real narrow and some toothpick of a guy would have trouble seeing with the stock mirrors...I pump iron too...gotta pretty good gym in my basement with a nice flatscreen for between sets. I agree a lot depends on the bike...and we even have "convex" mirrors on the electric trolleys here.
Your camera moves and shakes around a LOT.
On clipons, bar-end mirrors are a long way out of the line of sight. You have to remove your eyes from the road ahead to see it, whereas factory mirrors are much more within normal vision. Manufacturers purposely make fairing-mount mirrors short for some reason. It's a complete fashion fad to remove fairing-mounted mirrors, function or not.
Convex and i prefer bar end mirrors because stock are ugly.
No, ak.. you cant f*ck the haters.. you have a girlfriend.
i want puppy videos
