  • Hey everyone! In this video, you will journey with me to complete the Rim-to-River Challenge at the Grand Canyon via the South Kaibab Trail! In total, I hiked 17.8 miles, climbing 5,082 feet elevation in a little under 12 hours. I start at the South Kaibab trailhead (South Rim), and cross Ooh Aah Point, Cedar Ridge, Skeleton Point, the Tipoff, and before finally reaching Phantom Ranch.
    I started the hike at 6:30am and ended at 7pm, taking breaks along the way to film and enjoy the sunrises and sunsets. In the winter, the sun sets extremely early, so be sure to bring a head light! Also don't forget extra layers, bring enough water (you can fill your bottle at Phantom Ranch), and budget your time appropriately. It takes double the amount of time to climb up than it does going down!
    Overall, the sunrises and sunsets at the Grand Canyon are beautiful. I would recommend catching the sun rise at Ooh Aah Point, and take breaks along the way up to gaze at the sky full of stars during nightfall.

    How long did you train for this hike and what did your training consist of? I'm planning to do it in the beginning of May with a couple friends. Great video btw!

      Thanks Michael! I've been doing a lot of smaller hikes (5 miles, 10 miles) regularly, and have done longer hikes so this one didn't feel too bad in comparison. I would suggest doing smaller uphill training hikes before attempting this; make sure you're in shape, do regular cardio, and have the right gear!
      Remember it takes twice the amount of time going back up then it does down, so budget your time appropriately!

    Love the video. Great job! I am taking a group down and up this trail (staying one night in Phantom). How much water did you carry from Phantom up? Did you cache water on the way down?

      I carried around 4 liters to the bottom, and was able to fill up water at the bottom since there is a spigot at Phantom Ranch. However, I did hike in December where it is a lot colder, so I didn't feel very thirsty. During the hotter months, you'll need to carry a lot more as it gets scorching hot. I did not resort to caching water on the trail either!

    What time did you have to start to be able to finish the hike in one day?

    • @jeffreyyoh
      @jeffreyyoh  7 месяцев назад

      I started at around 6:30 and got up by 7pm! I spent a little more time at Phantom Ranch, so budget enough time and bring a headlamp!
