After having owned a water fountain for a couple of years, one of the most important aspects to consider is how to clean it. Algae builds up over time - even if you use an algaecide. It has to be cleaned regularly and the water needs to be replaced. While this design looks good, I can imagine those rocks will be full of algae in no time and will be difficult to clean. The whole thing needs to be taken apart, cleaned and flushed and then start over with new water. I'm still looking for a DIY solution that's easier to keep clean.
Great but I think the tray needs a few more small holes to allow for better drainage into the containment vessel besides the central one. An easier and more reliable waterproofing would be to use a piece of pond liner to waterproof the entire large vessel. Use pieces of styrofoam foam or foam insulation in the top pot so that you only need one layer of rock. This is too much weight in the top pot. Finally, the pump should be lower in the pot to avoid accidentally running dry, and it should be strong enough to raise water to the higher level.
You’re GREAT!!!! Thanks!
Can you do a detailed instruction on this?
How does the water recycle?... you need a few more holes on your tray.🤔
Easiest diy video I’ve seen! Definitely trying! Thank you !!
Nice video. But I would recommend putting your pump lower in the bottom planter.
Absolutley not.
absolutely yes, or it’ll run dry
Nice project - but MAJOR problem & safety issue with placing all that weight on the electrical cord. Need to do a cut out in that tray.
Or melt it a bit and make a gap in the side without losing the tray edge.
It’s fun to make and later on the bubbling water is incredibly relaxing!
This does not work. We bought everything at Lowe’s to do this project for our back patio. Between the pots, pump, rocks and other materials it’s well over $200. The main problem is the weight of the water in the larger planter and being able to seal it. Forget the plugs and caulk. I’ve tried cement, flex seal, and combinations of both and the water finds a way out of the bottom of the pot. The next and last thing I’ll try to do is finding a water tight container that won’t leak and can hold the weight of the pump and second container. This not as “easy” as it seems.
Good to know. How about putting a piece of pond liner in the pot?
Go to the dollar store and buy 2 round plastic basins to hold the water. I said two because doubling the basins could help with the weight problem.
You could have bought one already made for that price.
Do you put holes in the saucer for the water to recirculate
Easy and simple
what is the exact pump you used in this video?
I dk i did mine well with a solar pump and it works great..
So Cute!
Love the idea, thanks
Superb from Karnataka India
HOW TO YOU REFILL THE WATER IF YOU CAN LIFT THE TOP POT??
Awesome!!! Easy!!!
Oh wow this is great of course i will try it
love my water fountain...easy todo
What are the sizes of the pots used?
Beautiful thank u
Can you purchase an extension pipe or tube if you wanted to add a 3rd smaller pot on top to make the fountain even taller?
Yes you can.
What size pump is recommended for a project like this?
How far is the pump from the top of the first pot
Hi.. I have a cooler pump.. 18w-20w. Is this ok for the fountain?? Can I make 3 steps with that??
Good~ simple,interesting design
What is the power or wattage of the pump?
Won't it run dry ? How do u refill,do u have to disassemble it?
How about just pouring a few cups of extra water on top of it weekly? It runs down by itself, don't have to fill the bottom...
Where did you think the water was going?
The holes where the tube runs through allows water to drain back down to the bottom pot
@@codyjewell1460"Holes"??? They put in only one hole, and that wouldn't be enough.
seems to me that there is a plug around the cord of the sump pump. Rather than run the cord over the edge of the bottom pot, it can be threaded through one of the drain holes at the bottom and sealed. Obviously, a watertight seal is imperative and this may be the failing of such an idea if the seal between the chord and the plug cannot be achieved.
What do you do when the pump fails which of course it will in time?

I found a good collection of videos that may help you at Ewans Energy Roadmap
I'm building my own similar fountain. Though mine is a little more involved as I want it to be a little cleaner in design. I was thinking of running the cord through the bottom as well. In the end I just imagined too many potential problems, either with water-tightness or with the inability to shift things around, or even decreasing the amount of water by running it into a hidden, interior plastic basin. (Another abandoned thought) I'm opting instead to customize the lower saucer to better accommodate the wire, drape it as shown in this vid, and just turn it for the least amount of visibility.
One change I'm planning for mine is to use a small plastic saucer to make the upper part as sealed as possible so that the upper part over-flows and trickles down the upper sides rather than water just falling through the top. I have to re-order the upper saucer though. I would advise against using drills and clippers on the plastic components. You run into the potential of cracking and creating undesired jagged shapes. Use a SOLDERER (safely) instead, to really be able to control the shape of the cuts you're making.
True, any and all submercible pumps I have purchased last one season then ,, poot.
There is no way for this fountain to recirculate. I believe you left out the step to drill holes in that plastic tray so the water could get into the bottom planter and recirculate back up. And definitely too much weight in the top pot filled with rocks sitting on a plastic tray.
Exactly!
Oops! bathtub plugs used in bottom of 1st pot will mildew & deteriorated fast. What's something else that can work to plug up holes? Thanks.
Rubber plugs that are like corks. They are heavy duty and work great. Seal them with silicone. You can find them in the "hard to find" hardware section at Lowe's or other hardware suppliers. They are black in color.
The inside of the pots need to be sealed. That should prolong the life of the fountain. Making one currently. But other videos seem to skip that important step...🤔
What happens when it rains, does the bottom pot fill up more and overflow?
Don Viger yes but only if you live specifically below sea level
Yes, but that is not a problem?
BUY IT
It's caulk not cock but thank you, this is a cool fountain and I want to try it
We did this, then less than a year later, it is cracked and leaking??
This has been the easiest video on how to create a water fountain thanks i will try it@
What size is the pump?
Nice and simple. Does the pump cord plugged into electric cord to operate or was it a solar energy?
Can be solar. , can be electric
Looks easy.
Where did you get the pump with long tube ?
Walmart{aqurium pump
I had to buy the pump, the tubing and the spout separately. Pump $46 , tubing $15, spout $15. At Lowes.
@@edyrose8458 our Walmart is locked down so no buying non- essentials.
Can you do this with three (3) pots?
Power pomp should be as good as to supply the third pot
Go watch Andrea Lutz on RUclips, she did 3 tiers!
Simple we ll do it
How does the water make it back to the bottom planter to be recirculated?
Through the holes in the pots where the pump tube comes up.
Can this project be done with a solar pump?
a pump is a pump, solar or not, it will circulate water... solar is great for daytime...
I don't think that much weight on the pump cable is going to do it any good. Probably worth cutting a notch into the plastic for the cable to go through - if it doesn't become too weak.
Is the caulk safe for plants and/or fish?
You are going to put fish under the rocks?
Mark Olsen A plexiglass layer separating the rocks from the water?
MrGrombie n
Where did you get the plastic to rest the second pot on?
Ya I couldn't find one. I looked online on wayfair and it was expensive. My bottom pot was 20" so a 20" plate from wayfair was 50-70 bucks! I'm in Canada and we are on lock down. I couldn't find a plate so I had to fill the bottom pot with rocks. It was expensive .
2 pots from Walmart 20" and 16" $50
Pump from lowes $46
Extra tubing lowes $15
Spout for fountain lowes $15
Rocks $75
You guys missed a step!
Can a solar powered pump be used?
Casey G.
where do you get the 6 or 8 inch pot that holds the pump any body help me,thanks.
Here are the pots we used: 15.2-in ceramic planter, #485144, 9.8-in ceramic planter, #485136. Check your local Lowe's for availability. Thanks for watching.

Where the F that saucer come from??
In pakistan this one can be found every where
You can get one at Lowe’s or home depot
I couldn't get one at lowes. Not one that was big enough. My bottom pot was 20". So I had to fill the bottom pot with rocks.
lol. Umm. Estimated cost is "Under $500"... You can buy the nicest fountain you can find in a garden center for that much... And its not gonna be two pots.
Uh, yeah. I'd roughly estimate "Under $50". Methinks there was a typo.
This is the easiest one I have ever seen.
Nah
That’s not a fountain lol 😂
What’s with all this profanity in this video’s
The sword is caulk. Mispronounced?
