    I’ve had a lot of radios, including the Texsun PL- 990X.
    Received this 2 weeks ago from Amazon for 74.95 US. What an incredible radio!
    This little fella has out performed ANY radio I have ever owned using only the telescoping antenna.
    Amazing! FM sounds great, AM is full of stations, but the shortwave is phenomenal.
    Shortwave certainly isn’t dead, that’s for sure.
    Can’t wait for QODOSAN to come out with SSB.
    Thanks Andre’ . You’re the best!

      Hi Lin, thank you so much for your comment. I was actually wondering how the Qodosen would perform when compared to the PL-990. I am very happy to hear that it outperforms the P:-990, at a much lower price! The Qodosen really is a little wonder and it does make one realise that SW is certainly not dead.

    The interesting part of your DX catch is that you managed to lock into the carrier signal but some information in its sidebands didn't really get through all that noise. Still, tuning into a medium wave broadcast that's not meant for domestic propagation is by no means an easy feat! 🙂
    For certain stations I hear a voice or music but the speech isn't clear enough to make a proper distinction of the individual words. Low frequency bands behave like this therefore it's not a trait of MW DX'ing as it also affects SW broadcasts in the 160m-60m band region. 🌍📻
    Faint signals in the much higher frequency bands aren't that much affected by broad spectrum background noise. The poor S/N ratio on medium wave may be improved by using an external long wire antenna instead of the internal ferrite core, but most DSP receivers are programmed to ignore external antenna inputs when the MW band is selected. 🤔
    Good show, Andre! 👍👍

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you! The really great thing about the Qodosen is that it works on external antennas for MW, that is why I use the Tecsun AN-200 loop. Works wonderfully, and it is very good at nulling out noise if you turn it the right way. But some of these signals are so weak, no matter the reduced noise, you can only hear traces of words or music above the static. Still, very impressive what this radio can do.

      @@swlistening Interesting, yes but in a very clinical and sterile way. 😀
      Unlike in the democratic South, in Pyongyang you won't have much freedom while touring the city. Tourists are watched and monitored closely and straying from the guided tour group even for a minute is a big no-no, bru! Your friendly chaperone will make sure that you only photograph parts of the city that the authorities deem as "permissible". No interactions with the local people allowed without the guides' approval and as a visitor, you can only transact in major international currencies (like the Euro or USD) but strangely, not their own North Korean won. 🙄 🇰🇵
      You can bring your phone, but you'll have to switch to the local telco's SIM card for internal calls and for heavily restricted/monitored Internet connectivity. Whatsapp and social media apps won't work over there either. 😑

    Hi Andre, I have spent some time with my SR-286 comparing with a Realistic DX-360. To me the SR-286 has superior noise rejection. My house in Australia is in a reasonably quiet (for radio interference) urban location however the DX-360 does pick up noise and hash from the household and the outside overhead electricity transmission wires, whereas the SR-286 is much quieter on both MW & SW. Something close by is emitting a dreaded tick tick tick which the DX-360 is rather susceptible to however that sound is completely suppressed by the SR-286. General noise floor is much lower as well.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for your comment Lindsay. I have experienced the same, some of my other radios seem to pick up quite a bit more noise than the Qodosen. I think it has a built-in noise blanker. The Sangean PR-D4W, for example, is quite a bit more noisy than the Qodosen on MW. I think my location is similar to yours, it is a suburban area that is not too built-up. There is some RFI, of course, but not too bad. That tick tick you mention sounds like the electric fence noise I sometimes hear on my radios. There are some electric fences in my area, but not directly next to my house.

      @lindsaymdhbc comments like yours really make me tempted to try a Qodosen one day 🧐 I already have a "hand-crafted" TEF6686-based radio (it's the same chip as the one Qodosen uses) from Aliexpress, and while amazing on FM, it's really ridden by noise on LW/MW, especially from its display. But even with display off, there are birdies every 2 or 3 channels on MW 😩 On the other hand, however, most if not all stations that are supposed to be strong & clear (in nighttime) in my location are strong & clear, except when directly hit by one of these birdies, and on an experiment I made a couple days ago outdoors in broad sunlight and just a passive loop made out of some 3-4m of coax, I managed to pick up a Romanian or two from ~600-700km away via groundwave. So I'm in two minds about my radio 🤷‍♂ OTOH, SW is OK on an external antenna...

    Great catches André, well done! 👍 And special congratulations for Canary Islands 🎉 I thought you'd be more likely to get continental Spain first, on 684 or 774 or 855... But it's Canaries! 😱
    As for 1341... Here in Poland, this frequency is usually dominated by Radio Kuwait Cultural programme, although I did hear Egypt on there too. There's a video somewhere on my channel of 1341 kHz actually having Egypt on top at times, identifying as Idhaat al-Quran al-Qarim min al-Qa'hira, so // 864. I'm not sure which country would be more dominant down South, however, especially since there are like 4 transmitters in Egypt on 1341, but focusing on skywave hours only, I think they'd either carry Holy Quran or General Programme, rather than regional broadcasts. That's what they do 🤷‍♂️
    1413: as much as I hate this station, I must admit they're a distance champ of their own too. I've seen reports of Putler FM in IRCA group making it to Western Canada, where there are a few hardcore MW DXers with Beverage antennas overlooking anywhere from AU/NZ to NE Asia to Trans-Arctic paths... and Vesti FM typically arrived there across the Arctic.
    819: actually, I have a feeling that music sounds more like... Indian? If so, it must be... Maldives 😳 I wish your snippet were a bit longer 😞
    And how did you know it was Morocco on 612, and not Jordan? 🤨
    Cheers from stormy & noisy Poland ⛈️⛈️⛈️

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Arnie, thanks! I actually did pick up mainland Spain as my first ever MW catch from Spain, about two years ago. It was 855, there is a video somewhere on my channel, but I can't find it now. Very happy to get the Canaries now!
      I did not know that Maldives also uses 819, I passed over that frequency so quickly because I had caught Egypt before and just assumed it was the same one... I should have lingered there longer, now that you mention it.
      I always find it strange that I get Vesti FM often, many times very clearly, but Radio Rossi, double the power, on 999 kHz, remains a rare catch for me. And Kossuth Radio on 540, it uses 2000 kW, I think, I should be able to hear that one often, but I don't.
      About 612, I actually just guessed that it was Morocco, because the transmitter is stronger than Jordan. In my other video of this night, I also showed 612 and it was Jordan, according to a viewer on my channel in Jordan.

      @@swlistening when in doubt, try comparing with live streams for the stations listed. I think MWLIST provides links to these, so try it out on a phone if you can :)
      When you hear Maldives on 819, you can also try their other 2 frequencies. 684 is a French service (and it sounds quite like a French station, not as African 😆), while 1575 kHz is a BBC World Service relay. That one may be delayed quite considerably, like when I listened to it on Reunion KiwiSDR (which sadly went offline not long after I discovered it 😥), it was about 14 minutes late.
      I didn't know about your 855 Spain catch. But now with the Qodosen, I think it can make it again, with a better signal 😁 Same with Kossuth and the other naZi invaders' station, keep trying! 😼

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  2 месяца назад

      Do you listen to SSB signals? Or do you already have a radio with SSB? If you need SSB, the Tecsun PL368 is the obvious choice here, as the DX-286 does not have SSB. The PL-368 is a very nice radio, and you can also look at the PL-330, they share the same performance. But if you don't need SSB, then I would definitely recommend the Qodosen DX-286. It is more sensitive than the PL-368 on FM, MW, SW and LW.

Most of them just let their pc`s play their "hit songs" non-stop, which I do not consider that interesting. But some of them they bring an interesting presented program with music aswell. I do have an LPAM kit of 100 milliwatt myself which I only sometimes use to relay an internet radio station for myself, and listen on a Philips tube radio from the 1960`s. (You can see that on my own RUclips video channel). But more often I use my own build FM stereo oscillator to relay internet stations.
