      Restore with Joe Why didn't you use traditional "black lead" stove polish, which is actually a graphite paste these days? It makes cast iron look fantastic and provides some protection while being non toxic and it doesn't stink when hot.

  • @falfield
    @falfield 3 года назад +1

    Skilled job - nice to watch. Thanks for recording this. But puzzled at the flame gun & motor oil treatment - can you explain the rationale? Is 'used' of significance to the result, or was it what you happened to have available? - is the metal content of the used oil relevant, for eg? And was this stove for show or for use, and if for use, did it smoke/fume when in use, as it would have been hard for you to reach a higher temperature in pre-treatment with the flame gun than when fired up with a load of coal. Wouldn't iron paste have been easier blackening treatment? (iron paste=wax & carbon black, AFAIK).

      he mentioned that it is only for decoration, and hence I think he did not really care about the usage of materials like " old motoroil".

    In my opinion it is better to hear the sounds of work instead of music.
    I love old cast iron. A lot of work, but it was worth it - a beautiful result, congratulations.
    I think this stove is useful to its owner after the third world war. But if you really use it, beautiful oil oxidation will burn when it is very hot.

    Sweeeeeet! What is the benefit, if any, of using the old motor oil as a finish? I would think high-temp paint would be in order. Is it going to smell like old oil when you use it? I would want to use a stove this size in my tiny house - but, would be concerned about that old oil smell in the house. In the barn, it might be ok, though.
