Under a full power outage as I'm writing this. My heatpump (Fujitsu 22000 BTU cooling / 27000 BTU heating) is running like champ under generator power (thankfully as its muggy as hell out). One thing to mention, if you have one of those small UPS's as a battery backup for your PC, it does not like the power coming in from the generator. They will continually click back and forth between battery and line power. My guess is my incoming power is not clean enough for its liking. Everything else in the house seems to be running fine tho.
I just got one and noticed there is no regulator on the hose, although the user manual clearly states a regulator should be used. Has anyone used this generator with the supplied propane hose directly to a 20 lb. tank? I agree with all the posts here.....pictures show one thing...directions show another...but reality is somewhere in between.
I have the same issue with a couple of my UPS units while on generator power. My other UPS's have AVR (automatic voltage regulation) and are able to handle the slight changes in voltage without switching over to battery.
The choke is open for starting with propane. You press the purge valve once or twice to get air out of the hose, turn the key or pull the chord and it starts. The propane is under pressure so it doesn't need to be choked. The gasoline side is on a gravity feed. You may need to close the choke which will suck gas into the combustion chamber. Once the engine starts you open the choke to let air in. Then fuel/air mixture will flow and engine will run until out of fuel.
I have a XP12000 with their newer regulator with self purge. My unit definitely needs to be choked during start from propane or gas. I've watched videos of others that require no chock. Doesn't seem to be consistent even within a model!
apparently they don't all have it. They make changes to the generator design and don't necessarily change the model number or even the manual after they make changes that don't affect the specs@@dsdrinkwine
Read the label again...it says to "never choke when using propane", which means leave the choke open, don't close it like with gasoline and then open after starting. Leave it open, start and run, no adjusting necessary.
I have the same setup, my generator is a little bit smaller, the choke is for gas only, cold or warm it must be on to start the unit on gas, about 6 minutes in you can see the anti afterfire selonoid on the bottom of the carb, the choke holds this open until the unit is running and making power too energize the selonoid, the propane has it's own system for fuel delivery so it doesn't require the gas systems choke
Great video. Thanks for the honest opinion and help with the video. Of course there are always know it alls on these posts that can have some good info but they decide to talk down to people. I have the same generator and I also got mine in 2015. I have had to use it a few times and I too only have used mine on LP. We all know the mess and cost associated with gasoline. This generator has been awesome. If I were to have any complaint at all. it's that the generator can be a bit loud. All you have to do is move the location of the generator if it's bothering you too much. It's simple to use and has been very reliable. You are not going to get a better unit for the money. There are independent comparisons done on RUclips and I believe in 2016 this was voted the best generator to purchase. The bottom lines that if you need a generator, just get this Duromax and sit back and enjoy it. Good luck and thanks again for a great video.
Thank you for the positive comment! I agree, noise is a little bit of an issue if you have it close by the house. Mine is near my bedroom window, so I usually sleep in a different room if I'm letting it run over night. Overall, happy with the purchase and its still working great.
notsosilentmajority1 same here got mine for Christmas present for myself and I'm getting ready to install the rest. eBay had it listed for 1999.00 on sale for 499.00. I too plan on running on propane.
I have the DuroMax 12,000 model. I do two pulls at full choke, then I set it to half choke and it starts in one pull, after about a minute, I turn the choke off. That's running it on Propane. Never ran it on gas.
I personally wouldn't leave the generator out and covered like that. You stand a good chance of having a varmint making it a home and chewing up the wiring.
Just FYI. You do not need a low pressure regulator from the tank to the generator. The regulator on the generator is capable of handling full tank pressure. Your half inch line would be fine at full tank pressure. Think about it... you can connect your generator directly to a portable tank like a 20lb or 100 lb. tank with the connector provided on the generator. So dropping the pressure to the generator is not desired. The regulator on the generator is designed for direct tank pressure. The tank size doesn't matter. It's the outside temperature that controls the tank pressure being that propane boils at -44deg F. I have mine connected directly to my 360 gallon house propane tank. The generator sits about 10 feet away from the tank so I connect it on a "as needed" basis directly to the vapor equalization valve on the tank. (Full Tank Pressure) Purchased the connector on Amazon. Looks like a large Schrader valve on the tank. I just screw it on when I need it and unscrew it when not in use. That way the generator is only connected to my propane tank, when and if, I need to switch from gasoline to propane in an extended power outage. So loose the low pressure regulator to the generator. Just run a line directly to the regulator on the generator and that's all. One other note. If you have been running your generator on gasoline and want to switch over to propane before the gasoline has run out, you need to turn off the gas tank fuel supply valve and allow the carburetor float chamber to run out before switching over. Otherwise it will try to start or run on what ever gas is still in the float and the propane at the same time and will basically flood out the motor with both fuel types. The way I do it is to start it on gasoline then turn off the fuel valve and let the motor run till it empties the float and quits. Then start it on propane.
Gary, can I use a 1000 gallon propane tank. I have it for a gas heater inside, just wondering if the pressure is to great for the generator. also. can I splice into the propane line to run either one ?
Thank you much. You solved my problem using 5 gallon propane tank to run generator. Don’t choke it. The propane checklist on generator for propane got it wrong. It says choke to start. Thx again

Using the choke or not simply depends on where the gas enters the intake. I have heard others say that running on LPG or NG the choke is never used. This is not true. As an example, my small generator uses the choke for starting. One pull full choke, one pull half choke, allow to run for a few seconds (Longer in cold weather. I recently started mine when it was 15 degrees outside) then open the choke per the instructions.
Great review, very detailed oriented. The propane connector on the 1300 is threaded. The manual says it's an "LPG Source." I bought a Coleman Propane Adapter 1lb to 20lb which (silly me) thinking these connectors are universal. Any suggestions / links on the correct propane connector / hose to purchase with the right connector is much appreciated.

To properly exercise the generator you should plug in something that draws a good amount of amps, such as a portable electric heater for approx. 30 minutes. It puts the generator engine under load as well as the generator itself. Check your manual this is what they say to do at least once a month. Running your generator for the sake of the cheap battery without it under load is a waste of time, the battery does not last very long, as they are small and very cheaply made. If you have to have electric start invest in a small car battery, all you need to do is change out the battery cable leads. It's well worth the investment, these little junk batteries cost almost as much as a small car battery that will last for several years.
I just purchased the xp10000eh but haven't received it yet. I intend to replace the battery, what size do you recommend? Is switching out the cable leads difficult? Thanks.
Great video!, my setup is via transfer switch. My question is, do I need to ground the generator using a ground rod while it is connected to the transfer switch? I have the xp4850eh which is a smaller version of yours. I know The transfer switch is already grounded to the main panel's ground. Thanks
@@RobertMacCready I have used it in two occasions during hurricane season and didn't ground it. I took that decision due to the fact that the switch is already ground it at the breaker box.
I have a Small 12V Solar Panel and a $15 Charge controller. This maintains the battery safely and reliably and allows charging of cell phones or USB devices from the charge controller as well.
Which one did you get? Interested in doing this. Do you leave the small solar panel outside with the generator? Generator kept in a shed or something? Curious about replicating the setup! (Good idea using the sun to keep the battery tendered - nice)
Excellent info. Thank you for taking the time to post. We've just received our generator, I'll put it together as soon as I can get help lifting it out of the back of the truck. :) The FedEx truck couldn't make it down our drive. So, I backed the truck up to his lift gate and we slid it on board. I wish now I would have just tipped the fella to help lift it out. Hind sight I guess.Your supplied links are perfect as well. I'll be placing orders here after the weekend.Merry Christmas to ya and thanks again.
+mytactical22 Nice! I was lucky enough for fedex to make it right up to my house. So they dumped it on the porch for me and I was able to assemble it in place. I just picked up my 40lb propane tank (amzn.to/1J4BJT1), initial tests look good, no issues. I'll be curious to see how much runtime I can get out of it when I have my first outage this season.
Can I ask you about dimensions? What is length of this generator WITHOUT handlebars? Manual says its 34inches long. That measurement is included handlebars or just itself? Thank you.
I have the XP12000 and under any kind of load that small tank will last about an hour. On gasoline however, it only burns about 1.5 GPH so the large tank will run an entire shift. The noise is pretty bad tho..
I called my propane supplier and had them take a look at the setup. They said they were able to make it work with my 120 gallon tank, however the price for the install of the copper pipping + labor was out of this world expensive. So I would up buying two 40 gallon tanks and set the up nearby the generator. This has worked out pretty well.
I just got this generator, it's still in the box in fact. My plan was to get a 100 lb propane tank, I don't plan on ever running gasoline through it. How long would you say would be its runtime on a 100 lb propane and tank?
Nicholas Anding I ran a 40 lbs bottle for two days on this generator. It powered two 5th wheels campers next to each other. One hooked onto the 50 amp and the other hooked into the 20 amp.
That was just a test run. I have since purchased two 40-lb tanks so I can run for longer outages and have to fill less often. I have never actually run a 20lb tank to empty.
It is still working well. Haven't had to do any real maintenance outside of oil changes. Have only ever run it on Propane. Electric starter fires it right up.
Agreed. Small droplets of gasoline do not evaporate well inside the throat of a cold engine. So, a choke is necessary for cold starting. Propane is vapor ONLY. Do not choke propane fuel flow. It will only keep engine from starting or starve the running engine of air and kill the engine.
Never choke means leave the choke open so actually the sticker is correct. The button on the top of the filter regulator primes the system with propane.
No. If your plan is to only use propane as I do, you will never need to fill the gasoline tank on the unit. There is a separate shut off valve for the gas tank tho.
Hey! Thanks for this video! Appreciated it. I just got the Duromax 12000EH and had a quick question about your propane use. I think you said you have a 100pound tank? Any idea HOW LONG the tank lasts under say 50% or full load? I am having such a hard time trying to decide what size tank to have in the event we need to run it for days.... Any advice on your tank size, how much you are running load wise, etc.. would be great! Thanks agaain!
How long will a promax 4400 idle on a 20 lbs propane tank? I did a calculation which does not seem possible. It used 0.6 pounds in 1 hour. I full 20 lbs propane tank should runs about 32 hours Idle. Has anyone else done this test? Most tanks are only 17 lbs net weight . This is about 28 hours run idle time.
I haven't been able to find any instructions for grounding the generator anywhere. In the owner's manual it says to connect a grounding wire but the generator doesn't come with a wire and doesn't provide any instruction for grounding, aside from connecting the grounding wire. Has anyone else come across this?
same gennie, has run about 20 min in 3 yrs, has never had gas in it.,starts and runs for about 10 sec and dies, full 20 lb tank. Not sure what happened to original propane hose, took hose of 40,000 btu heater with reg, ran kinda irratict, but ran with out dying, used diff hose no regulator, runs for 10 sec and dies, i have no clue. any help?
You must live in a very rural area or no one around that could steal your generator. I am constructing an outdoor shed (trash bin storage) with security to chain the generator to the concrete flooring, to prevent theft. Many youtube vids how to do this
+Jordi Hester Not yet.. I did basically run it with my whole home powered up, however I was not running the Heat pump at that time. Its been so warm here in the northeast. Next time I'm firing it up for a charge run, I'll turn on the Split AC/Heatpump unit (220v) and see how it does.
+Jordi Hester I am also going to pickup a 40 lb tank. I got an estimate to run a line from my 120lb propane tank around the house to the generator.. $1500 dollars! Let us know how you make out. Im curious how much run time we can get out of a tank that size.. I'm thinking of this one -> amzn.to/1SYc9zi , 40lb Flame King tank.
+In_The_Woods That's a good price. I went through Home Depot, $90. I'm in Kansas and upgraded from a smaller generator. We're on a natural gas line so don't think it the same as propane.
The voltmeter will not generate any power even though it's running fine ... no RPM.... customer service is sorry... they seems to always refer you to the oil change!
Hi , I received my generator but the manual was not there. I looked under the gas tank, not there. I tried to contact the seller but they have not responded. It's been about a 1/12 weeks now . I want to make sure the unit is good. So , if anyone had a pdf copy of it I would really appreciate a copy. Thanks for the post . That would be a great install for my home .
Hey man, I'm having trouble with my unit. I just got it and I'm trying to test run it with propane. It will start and then just die out. Choke is open. I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong
I've had similar issues. I had to adjust the choke to get it to run smoothly. That is, not open or closed, but somewhere in between. It took a little trial and error to find just the right position for it to run properly.
Still running solid. I only use this when there is a power outage, so it does not get a ton of use. The times I have used it, its run all day long, and I've had no problems. You've reminded me I need to change the oil on it. :)
@@InTheWoodsPA you are welcome. I've had my brand new for 2yrs in a box. haven't had a need for it. brought it really cheap on Black Friday. can you think of anything that can go wrong?

Next year it will be illegal to purchase a gas powered generator in California. Politicians are insane so I plan to buy the 13000 EH version for my parents house so we are able to power everything in the house. I currently own a Lincoln 4500 watt generator/welder that doesn't seem reliable or power every thing as it was a disappointment during my last power outage which is rare in Los Angeles but does happen. It is an old unit and it was given to me by the company I work for so it did not cost me any thing. If someone is interested in purchasing the Lincoln Generator from me I will sell it at a very good price.
I am using an 'Interlock Kit' (amzn.to/1kxoAXp).. No transfer switch being used on this setup. The generator feeds into a 40AMP Breaker that pushes power to the entire box.
ok, then the manual that came with the unit is incorrect, because it says the exact opposite. Either way, the unit only runs properly for me with the choke in the middle. All the way open , or all the way the closed the unit just stalls out.
Choke or not just depends on where the fuel enters the carb. If the fuel enters in between the choke and throttle plate you should use the choke to aid in starting. If the fuel enters outside the choke you wouldn't choke to start it. On my pull start generator with a dual fuel carb it is a 2 pull start. One pull fully choked, then it starts on half choke. Once it starts running I open the choke all the way. If you have to run on half choke your mixture needs adjusted to correct it. No carbureted engine should need to run half choked once fully warmed up to operating temp.
I bought this generator in may of 16 and so far the muffler has fallen off spark plug broke off in the boot all the bolts are coming out and the arm to the idel broke . has anybody else had these problems

I just purchased the xp10000eh but haven't received it yet. I intend to replace the battery, what size do you recommend? Is switching out the cable leads difficult? Thanks.
when using gasoline, do you keep choke level closed THEN start THEN full open choke lever?
Great video!, my setup is via transfer switch. My question is, do I need to ground the generator using a ground rod while it is connected to the transfer switch? I have the xp4850eh which is a smaller version of yours. I know The transfer switch is already grounded to the main panel's ground. Thanks
I would like to know that answer too.
@@RobertMacCready I have used it in two occasions during hurricane season and didn't ground it. I took that decision due to the fact that the switch is already ground it at the breaker box.
If the transfer switch is grounded then you do not need to use a grounding rod.
@@Tatorvision thanks for confirming. We had a storm a few years ago...and I had ur same tought ....
How long do you think it would run off of a full bbq grill tank size of propane?
I have a Small 12V Solar Panel and a $15 Charge controller. This maintains the battery safely and reliably and allows charging of cell phones or USB devices from the charge controller as well.
Which one did you get? Interested in doing this. Do you leave the small solar panel outside with the generator? Generator kept in a shed or something? Curious about replicating the setup! (Good idea using the sun to keep the battery tendered - nice)
How long does it run with propane?
Good job I like the interlock.. Nice job old timer !!!
How is the generator holding up?
I'll be curious to see how much runtime I can get out of it when I have my first outage this season.
i told u i like business and my pdrsm.um nm c b pī
Can I ask you about dimensions? What is length of this generator WITHOUT handlebars? Manual says its 34inches long. That measurement is included handlebars or just itself? Thank you.
I have the XP12000 and under any kind of load that small tank will last about an hour. On gasoline however, it only burns about 1.5 GPH so the large tank will run an entire shift. The noise is pretty bad tho..
How will you adapt the fittings when you connect to the large 120 gallon tank? Will you have some sort of quick disconnect? Thanks
How many electrons in your square footage ?
How much does it cost for the electrician to hookup everything?
Do you ever been able to run whole house AC unit??
Thank you
Use a 5-2-1 cap to your AC to reduce the initial start up surge.
Nicholas Anding 1 hr. per pound so 100 hrs for 100# tank at 50% load.
Thanks you good work.
You ran that thing off a 20lb propane tank? How long did it last?
That was just a test run. I have since purchased two 40-lb tanks so I can run for longer outages and have to fill less often. I have never actually run a 20lb tank to empty.
After 7 years how is the unit holding up? Thanks
It is still working well. Haven't had to do any real maintenance outside of oil changes. Have only ever run it on Propane. Electric starter fires it right up.
Having the choke open does not choke the engine there your are not using it. Sticker is correct.
Very nice setup... I am getting there and thank you for your Advice.
Great video, but I’d never leave my generator out for one reason.they’d steal it . If I do use in a power outage I’d chain it down.
Agreed it would disappear quickly in some places
I was watching a similar non- DuroMax video. Question, if you are solely using propane do you have to add gas to to the tank??
No. If your plan is to only use propane as I do, you will never need to fill the gasoline tank on the unit. There is a separate shut off valve for the gas tank tho.
What about oil?
John Pignone Reed Hi from what I understand a 20# tank gets you 20 hr. run time so 1 hr. per pound. I hope this helps. And that's at 50% load. thanks
4:31 choke off and open mean the same, choke closed and on mean the same
I personally would check the oil before starting. I know it has a low oil shut off but i dint trust them. That's just me though.
Not sure what happened to original propane hose, took hose of 40,000 btu heater with reg, ran kinda irratict, but ran with out dying, used diff hose no regulator, runs for 10 sec and dies, i have no clue. any help?
Have you tried monkeying around with the choke? Mine also will not run properly without putting the choke a little less than half open at all times.
Awesome job! Very well done - you got a great system!
Excellent video!
You must live in a very rural area or no one around that could steal your generator. I am constructing an outdoor shed (trash bin storage) with security to chain the generator to the concrete flooring, to prevent theft. Many youtube vids how to do this
I'm up on a mountain up here.. Its pretty rural. However I should take your advice and come up with something more secure :)
Super helpful, thanks!
Have you ran your home AC with it yet?
+Jordi Hester Not yet.. I did basically run it with my whole home powered up, however I was not running the Heat pump at that time. Its been so warm here in the northeast. Next time I'm firing it up for a charge run, I'll turn on the Split AC/Heatpump unit (220v) and see how it does.
I ordered this very same generator along with a 40 lb propane tank. I hope it runs great.
Battery tenders are cheap, and leaving it outside is a bad idea for a lot of reasons.
Did an electrician install the power back on unit?
Great video and links
@@InTheWoodsPA Thanks man- I appreciate it
What size wire did you run from inlet box to breaker box ?
10 gauge THHN wire
@@InTheWoodsPA 50Amp?
10 guage is minimum for 30amps. Maybe you meant 8 or 6 guage?
saludos tiene idea del consumo de gas kilos por hora para tener una idea de que bombona requiero
Does using propane let u use it more in a closed area?
Be safe. do not.
Im guessing that dumbass died of carbon monoxide poisoning 😂
Has anybody considered connecting Natural Gas to this Generator aside from propoane and will it work?
Indeed these will work fine with NG also... great since my house uses NG...
thanks . I'm looking to buy a portable.
still feel good about this Genset 5yrs later?
Still running solid. I only use this when there is a power outage, so it does not get a ton of use. The times I have used it, its run all day long, and I've had no problems. You've reminded me I need to change the oil on it. :)
@@InTheWoodsPA you are welcome. I've had my brand new for 2yrs in a box. haven't had a need for it. brought it really cheap on Black Friday. can you think of anything that can go wrong?
@@Josehngary Dead battery if you haven't been keeping it charged. I bought a little solar charger to keep the battery tip top. You can pull start this, but you better be strong. I can barely start this thing without the electric starter functioning. I would recommend keeping it charged, so you don't have to buy a new battery.
@@InTheWoodsPA unboxed it finally. No issues with battery (been packed up nee since 2018) it was a really hard start. Took lots of tries but it came up and stayed on. Gtg now.
@@Josehngary Great to hear. Good to know the battery can hold a charge for awhile.
How many cylinders is this DuroMax generator?
It has 1. Its 18hp. 4 stroke.
7:42 it's a MBT (manual bus transfer)
That plug that you connected to your generator is not flush and inserted all the way in so that cord is useless.
Can you run this generator in your garage if you have the exhaust going out through the wall
It explicitly states on the top of the unit to NOT do this.
What transfer switch do you have? You only have a link for the inlet
I am using an 'Interlock Kit' (amzn.to/1kxoAXp).. No transfer switch being used on this setup. The generator feeds into a 40AMP Breaker that pushes power to the entire box.
Why did you use a 40 amp breaker and not a 50? also what kinda of wire did you use for the run from the inlet plug to the main panel?
Wondering if the unit comes with a 50 amp ext cord too?
No. I had to purchase the cord separately (amzn.to/1j0kfv6). No cabling was supplied with my unit.
Yii are conf used as to what choke olen and close means. Choke open is normal op.
So u are doing as it should be.
Never choke on propane means leave the choke all the way open. The label on the machine is correct, you sir are incorrect.
ok, then the manual that came with the unit is incorrect, because it says the exact opposite. Either way, the unit only runs properly for me with the choke in the middle. All the way open , or all the way the closed the unit just stalls out.
air density possibly or...?
What is your elevation?
All the way up.
I wish I got this size generator 👍
Choke on means choke closed. Choke open means choke off. The label is correct
t.
thought I would add a bit more carification. If you look at the label; you see the opening blocked graphically which means it is choking or choke on.
Why do you have it outside
It has to be outside or you can kill all occupants with exhaust.
I bought this generator in may of 16 and so far the muffler has fallen off spark plug broke off in the boot all the bolts are coming out and the arm to the idel broke . has anybody else had these problems
Wow! You must have gotten a lemon. I've only used mine 4 or 5 times since i got it, but its still working ok.
My generator won’t even turn over when choke is on.
I was really disappointed in the cover.
Has anyone converted this to a tri-fuel? Adding natural gas.
An open choke is no choke dude...Jesus!
