I’ve been very busy lasering. Hope you are well mate.
I am sorry its took me so long to watch this, I really enjoyed it and it was great to get a video from yourself and I look forward to seeing the new woodturning videos 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it. I will get some woodturning videos out soon, 2 on the go at the moment.
Happy Dewallie haha 🎆🎇

Good honest info. Thanks Jim
Thanks Tim
Excellent and informative! Cheers Jim. Have a Nutty Christmas 😉
Thank you very much, always nutty. Happy New Year
Hi Jim.Good to see you back. The quality of your work was second to none. You give yourself a new challenge.I want to see that.Thank you.
Thanks 👍
Congratulations! How marvelous.
Many thanks for watching
Very helpful, thanks. Merry Christmas
Thank you and a Merry Christmas
Glad you are back, Jim. I missed you! Not really interested in the motorized vehicles you did recently but maybe I'll take a look. Looking forward to new woodworking videos. Really liked this video. I've been thinking about getting something like this and you make it look easy enough that even I can do it! At $300 USD I think it is worth a try. A belated Christmas present! I'll look into it more but do you think it would be able to "autograph" the bottom of a 4" bowl? How about round things like pens or rolling pins? If so, I'm sold!
Hope you, Mia and the family had a great Christmas and are looking forward to a Happy, Health and Prosperous New Year.
Thanks Tom. The laser has a very narrow focal plain so not ideal for cylindrical objects, some more expensive lasers have a roller mechanism which rolls the workpiece as it engraves. It would certainly engrave the bottom of a bowl if it was flat but you may need to raise the frame up on blocks to gain adequate clearance.
Happy New Year
Hi Jim wondered were you were, good to see you alway interesting, Happy Christmas
Yes I'm back, many thanks for watching and a Merry Christmas to you too .
Great video, lovely to see you Jim and Merry Christmas 😀
Thank you very much and a Merry Christmas to you too .
good to see you back. Nice review of the laser. I really appreciate that you mention both power specifications for the input and the output of the laser. Many manufacturers only mention the input power, which is not a reliable information for the effectivity of a laser.
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Many thanks for watching. Yes the actual specifications are often well hidden. The output was clearly listed for this one thankfully. I have to say that I was surprised how powerful it was. Happy Christmas .
Happy New Laser, Jim 👍
I've certainly enjoyed experimenting with it. Merry Christmas .
Great Video... and happy holidays
Thank you very much and Happy holidays to you too.
Have a great Christmas and New Year Jim!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎
Thanks Alan and seasons greetings to you too.
Jimsons back!! Everything alright man?
I'm fine thanks, its been a difficult year ! Getting out in the workshop a bit more now.
The perfect review and intro to a low cost hobby diode laser Jim, thanks for sharing🙏 I have a similar one that's about 6 months old now and love it. Even though this one is what I would call 2nd Gen with so many improvements having been developed with the laser head (mine doesn't cut near as well even with the same power ratings). Thanks again🙏 Take care. -Mike p.s. Mine came from Made The Best too (USA) and shipping was quick ~1 week.
Thanks for watching, yes cuts very well, it has a very tight focal point and although doesn’t have true air assist, the magnetic red guard is designed in such a way to direct the down draft from the cooling fan so that it blows away the smoke which seems to work well and keeps the lens clean.
Brilliant review Jim. I like the extractor fan setup. It's better than nothing. I really need to set up extraction for my resin printer.
Have a lovely Christmas and a great new year bud✌️
Thanks Tony, I will eventually make a housing for it and connect the extractor fan to that. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
Can't wait to see all the projects you can make with that Merry Christmas my friend
Merry Christmas to you too

Nice review Jim, if I had a caver for a workshop I would like to get one but I ain’t got no room👍
Yes I wish I had more space too. The laser takes up a fair bit of space when in use but can be stored on its side.
Great review of what looks like a good machine. I assume it's using a pair of 10w diodes and a beam combining prism to get up to 20w. A DIY enclosure to control fumes and stray laser emissions and this looks like a useful and relatively inexpensive piece of kit.
I am impressed with it’s capabilities. 20w is the input, output is 5.5w which I think is a single diode. It is certainly a small focus point for a diode laser, the Kerf is minimal. There are machines out there with more features but they are a lot more expensive. Many thanks for watching.
@@JimsonMakes That's interesting and a little deceptive - but quite a few of the Chinese suppliers have started using that "different" and stupid way of making their machines appear more powerful. There are also some legitimately using a pair of laser diodes that work in tandem as I described - doubling up the power. It's possible yours is doubling up a pair of 2.8w diodes. Caleb Kraft over at Make: just did a video on the Atomstack p9 (kickstarter) which uses this technique (they called it "dual compressed" which he didn't understand at the start of the video) but I've seen others that claim to have duel 10w diodes which would make a very powerful diode based machine. Thanks for the video and I look forward to seeing how you make use of your new engraver/cutter.
Hi Jim! You sold me on the dewalli laser! I ordered it. Now that I have it I'm wondering how easy it will be to burn images on wood? I am a photographer and have tons of high resolution images. Can you use any image and make it into a graphic to burn? I probably should have asked first.... oh well. I can get Lightburn also once I get the laser delivered. Also, do any designs come with Lightburn? Sorry for so many questions. I am very excited to start! Thank you
Thats great, you will have lots of fun. I have now done quite a few projects with it and it is still going great. LightBurn is a fantastic bit of software and very easy to learn, you just need to establish the best settings. It is certainly possible to burn photos onto wood although this is something I haven’t tried yet . There are some great video tutorials on RUclips on how to convert and create suitable images to burn, I assume you import them into LightBurn to burn them but not sure. You will need to convert them to B&W first and mess about with contrast etc. The important thing is to get some good quality laser ply and give the surface a light sanding with some fine sandpaper, the extra smooth surface will give a better result with detail.
Thanks Jim I can’t wait to get started!!!! Many years ago while traveling to Africa I bought 4 laser etched Images of African animals, I love them and always wanted to create them myself. Now I can, thank you again for contacting me back
I received the laser yesterday and struggled all day trying to get it to start. I am using Lightroom but it seems even though it says the laser is ready that it will not move. Is there a forum somewhere that deals with troubleshooting that you know of? Thanks!
@@I-build-crafts try closing Lightburn and restarting it. Have you clicked on the device bit and find my device ?
@@JimsonMakes Hi Jim thanks for getting back to me! I think I’ve tried everything including everything that you have suggested, thanks. I have written to the company where I bought it with a very detailed explanation of what I’ve been doing hopefully they’ll get back to me soon and I can iron out these details and start doing some work.
This is never an 20Watt Laser.... Measure the Power... Volts x Amps...
Chinese say 20wats in reality 6Watts max.
No 20 watt input, output is 5.5Watts
