Once upon a time, a kind prince wanted to marry a real princess. But how could he know if someone was truly royal? The prince and his mother, the queen, decided to find out.
The prince met many princesses from faraway lands. They all looked lovely, but something always felt wrong. The queen said, “A true princess has a very special sensitivity!”
One stormy night, lightning flashed, and rain poured down. A knock on the palace door startled everyone. The prince rushed to see who it was.
At the door stood a soaking wet young woman. “I’m a princess,” she said, shivering. “Can I stay here tonight?” The prince was surprised but welcomed her in.
The queen whispered to the prince, “If she’s truly a princess, we’ll find out tonight!” The prince was curious. What was his mother planning?
The queen went to the royal bedroom and placed a tiny green pea on the bed. She ordered her servants to stack 20 mattresses and 20 featherbeds on top of it.
The bed was so tall it almost touched the ceiling! The princess looked up at it and asked, “Do I have to sleep on THAT?” The queen nodded with a smile.
Climbing the tall bed was a big challenge! The princess used a ladder to reach the top. She lay down and closed her eyes, trying to rest.
But the princess couldn’t sleep a wink! She tossed and turned all night, feeling something hard beneath her, even through all the soft mattresses.
In the morning, the queen asked, “How did you sleep, dear?” The princess replied, “Terribly! Something was poking me all night. It felt so uncomfortable!”
The prince was amazed. How could she feel the pea through all those layers? The queen smiled and said, “Only a true princess could notice something so small!”
The prince was overjoyed. He knew now that the young woman was a real princess. Her delicate nature and honesty proved her royal heart.
The princess and the prince grew fond of each other. Soon, they were married in a grand celebration. Everyone cheered for the loving couple.
The tiny pea was kept in the royal museum. People came from all over to see the proof of the princess’s uniqueness and sensitivity.
