    I lived in Tokyo in 1990-91, so this brings it all back. Thank you. I used to busk at Ikebukuro Station, so wandered all over that area of Tokyo. If you have any film of buskers, I would love to see it. You have history captured here. Great stuff.

    港南口のテナントビル内にある企業で働いている者です。
    今の港南口とは全く違いますが、蕎麦屋や中華料理屋が当時からあるのが驚きです。

    懐かしいですね~この大学に在籍し、24分ごろの寮に住んで、32分ごろに写っているカッターボートを漕ぐ部活に在籍していました。36分ごろ撮影者が登っている構造物は、確か戦前の海軍経理学校の時代からあるボートダビットで、危ないから誰も登ろうとする人はいなかったですね笑

    There was a strange comment: "I'm stunned how much Tokyo hasn't changed over the years" - that is so wildly at odds with the reality of quite dramatic change in Shinagawa that I've removed it. The east side of Shinagawa Station has changed quite dramatically. They basically obliterated about 99% of what was there and completely rebuilt it. Anyone who says Shinagawa (particularly the station area) hasn't changed in the past 24 years probably has never been to Shinagawa.

      @inefekt 2 года назад +3

      Shinagawa Station was extensively redeveloped in 2003 so you are absolutely correct in what you are saying. In terms of the area's skyscrapers, the top 40 highest buildings in Shinagawa were all built after your video. So that indicates significant change in the area.

    I love the Hanabi parts! I had no way in those days to even take photos of this - too dark, and digital cameras did not yet exist.

      With the technology at the time, image sensors weren't very sensitive, so you needed a fast lens. The camera I was using had an f1.8 lens that was just fast enough to record night scenes....

    30年前、品川港南口なんか何もない町だったのに。改札から狭くて長い通路(幅は5メートルくらいだったかな)をてくてく歩いたもんだ。
    今じゃでっかいオフィスビルが何棟も建っているけど、当時はコクヨホールくらいしかなかったからね。

    Judging by you’re comments in the video you knew RUclips was going to be invented and that other would see your video. You were limited by technology at that time with battery and tape. So your panning shots were rapid because tape and battery was short. Or you thought the quality of digital videos was going to capture sharp pictures for history. in any case, I really appreciate your uploads.

      That's an excellent question, but it would take hours to properly answer it. One thing I can quickly say is the vast gap between the tiny CRT view-piece monitor I was looking at while recording video and large screen playback led to (in the early 1990 material in particular) movement that is only comfortable to watch on a small screen. Kind of ironically, smartphone screen size is best for some of the videos.....

    An excellent video! So extensive that I'll have to watch it in two sittings as I don't have this much free time all at once! Really enjoying how you've documented so much of the area and also how much the area has changed from how it is today (I never saw it this long ago, but today I can almost barely recognise it from my visits there).
    It is videos like this that has made me want to document where I go and what I see so extensively, to see how much things have changed for the future. I bet in 20 years when I look back at my videos I'll be shocked at the changes as well.

      Svartmetall Sverige! Thanks! I'm personally really glad I took this one, particularly the part showing that pedestrian tunnel and the old east exit, as I had a real Rip-Van-Winkle moment some years ago when I went to the east exit area for old-times' sake and was truly shocked to discover that there was almost no trace of anything that I had come to see! This one is representative of what I would sometimes do on weekends in 1991. I would just have short trips during the week (basically just taking video as I went about my week, going to work, etc.) and then having an all-day project (specifically for taking video) on Saturday and/or Sunday. This video is unusual in that I went ahead and just put the entire tape (minus edited out parts) into this one video, so it covers more than one area, with a short train journey in the middle. I commented on-camera (can't remember if I left that in or took it out in the edit though) about how old things were disappearing fast. I began the video project back then in order to record modern day Tokyo, but as I went about recording things, I often felt compelled to get records of old things that clearly were not going to be there much longer. Still, I never quite anticipated the level of change that would occur! The east exit side of Shinagawa Station is one example of that....

      Lyle Hiroshi Saxon I heard your comment actually - it was shortly after the alleyway with the kids and the gigantic dog!
      I don't think many cities can boast quite the same level of change as one sees in Tokyo, however, I know that the biggest city close to me (London) has changed a fair amount from when I was a kid. I wish I could have videotaped life in London back in the early 1990s - it was a very different place in many ways back then. Now central London is only a playground for the rich and famous...

      @lylehsaxon  9 лет назад +2

      I visited London just before getting a video camera... If I'd had one, I would have taken something (as I did when I visited Sydney).... I keep thinking I wish I had a video camera in the early 80's when I came to Tokyo! Particularly for the Yamanote Line which still had some trains running without air conditioning, etc. Still I did (barely) start taking video in time to capture the manual ticket gates.

    Ah so in the past, when we enter the Shinagawa Station from Takanawa (West Entrance) after the ticket gate we are stepping dowstairs to find the particular lines then take an upstairs for the platform? While now after the West Entrance we are going upstairs (no downstairs) then we will find the main ticket gate on the right side? Please correct me if I am wrong. So happy to watch this video as I have memories around Shinagawa Station especially the Takanawa side. Thank you for sharing Hiroshi-san!

      Back then, there was also an upstairs part, but the only way to get to the East E#xit was through the tunnel. Using the west exit was similar to now... You can see part of the upstairs area in this video: 1991 品川駅とスーパー Shinagawa Station and Supermarket 911109 - ruclips.net/video/_NTJ3epvrgE/видео.html
