Fans are solely just a by product but are never the means to an end. Basically, an artist produces art for a particular end goal, it's usually for something more substantial than just a few admirers.
Thoughtful, intelligent, warm, complex, honest, engaging, self-doubting, compassionate, humourous, articulate. Just some of the words you could use to describe Marvin Gaye. What a wonderful piece to watch. If only he could have believed in himself the way in which we, his fans did! Such an amazing talent and, a beautiful, sensitive human being. Had he not died so young, I could easily have seen him championing mental health awareness. At least we still have his music. RIP Marvin
What an absolutely lovely comment - so true in it's entirety. I think he was contrary, incredibly erudite and so frustratingly passive. Given all the circumstances, it's no wonder the drugs took hold - sheer escapism. Utterly heart-breaking - just a tortured soul.
Wow, never knew how deep Marvin's depression went. A very fragile, deep thinking and empathetic dude. A genius mind and good communicator hence the superb quality of his music.
He was so right about the World being in a horrible place. He was insightful along with deep dysfunction . His openness about his depression & suicide attempt is remarkable. I admire his transparency.
Actually the world is worst than ever I’m a 90’s kid and this artist was able to depict all the devastating things way back then which is even more apparent today! Rip Mr.Gaye the resurrection is soon to come.
It's just a negative vibe that has been passed and handed down through every generation......that most will grab like a baton to run to recycle. It's kind of crazy how easy it is for anyone that believes themselves to be depressed/chooses to exercise depression to gravitate towards harming and killing themselves.
@@tiffanywaldon4875 my mom said it was always between Marvin Gaye or Bob Marley for her. My mom had a type clearly in her younger days. Both men kinda look similar. Both very handsome and had many women, Bob a little more. 😅😅
He was so so good looking. He was ahead of his time, he was woke and spoke a lot of sense. I totally understand the source of his depression. Totally relate.
ahead of his time lol people kill me when they say that! what made it the wrong time? or what makes the future the right time ? when he was living in the moment?
He said that the state of humanity was a source of his depression. I felt the same during that time frame, and since then. His song "What's Going On" evokes that feeling of melancholy. The 60's were wonderful and horrible at once. His music captured all of it. He never needed awards. RIP Marvin
During that time!!?? You honestly should listen to what's going on again and see if it still relates to today. That song should honestly be played to children in elementary schools.
He actually needed validation. Very much so. He knew his worth but couldn't focus because of his damaged ego and childhood traumas. This compounded with an inability to control his excesses was a hugely damaging combination. He would probably be diagnosed with manic depression or bi-polar disorder nowadays. For these individuals dealing with real life is difficult in the extreme. The success comes with many caveats not fully expected by those with more stable beginnings. Marvin refused to be labelled or controlled by societal convention. He even stood up Princess Margaret at a concert in London to go powder his nose. He was not wholly blameless in the matter of his own destruction.
Marvin will never be replicated. His music gets inside- it isn't only beautiful it 'gets to you'. Somehow he knew how to do that, and he realized it. I know his 'habits' had a negative effect- but his soul will live forever. RIP Marvin- you're missed terribly
The old music industry was brutal and ran by gatekeepers. It still is, they just pivoted and got into bed with streaming services to exploit artists material for pennies on the dollar in exchange for equity stake in companies like spotify.
I appreciate his transparency. Most of us deal with mental health issues and having empathy for humanity can do a number on your mind, body and spirit.
I love how Marvin explains how he feels deeply about the world, which can lead to depression. I'm guessing he was an introvert. This is the first time I ever saw him interviewed. I danced to his songs in the clubs and loved his music, especially "What's Going On". He is such a soft-spoken man. Gentle. So insightful. A talent gone far too soon from gun violence.
The way he takes sooo much accountability and recognizes his short comings. Admitting he is difficult to live with. Not many people are ready to admit that they are imperfect. I relate to Marvin. May he rest in peace
He knows his shortcomings, but continues the behavior anyway. That’s not accountability. Part of being accountable is solving how to correct the behavior. Being able to admit the shortfall doesn’t help anyone, not even him.
Too bad a lot of women cant be self held accountable. But yes he did like the drama, yes there was a sense of arrogance yes he was a tortured Soul, sometimes self-inflicted. Some argue, he committed suicide by having his father kill him, he did give his father the gun.
Wow, what a brilliant, eloquent, empathic, soft-spoken gem of an artist!!!!! Introverted, empaths even when famous, do suffer in silence and are heavily tortured by the injustices in the world. Rest on, Marvin.
He looked at his gift as a service to others rather than benefitting himself. He also had a carreer at the time when artists where treated like shit by corporate America and record labels. Mix all of that with internal and family issues and you get this. He will always be loved. He’s from my neighborhood.

I love his brutal honesty. At this point in his life he was sort of subdued and not feeling the greatest about himself. The man himself said he was depressed. I don’t understand why people in the comments are talking about his talking voice tone, it’s stupid. Not many artist would be as candid about their feelings as he was.
Actually MOST true artists are very open and emotional, the internet just made way for the “Faux celebrity” so a “Star” and “celeb” are on a fine line these days but in actuality they aren’t the same.
One of the most brutally, honest interviews I've ever witnessed. I don't think that he ever anticipated this particular life of his to be a long one. I think that he expected it to end in tragedy. He recognized his gentle incompatibility with this brutal world. And he was okay with it and what that might mean for him.
This interview has moved me in so many ways. What a gentle soul and yet he was always fighting his demons. I wish he was still with us today. What senseless loss.
I TRULY ADMIRED Marvin as an artist. He was one the best to ever do it. Even as a child, I KNEW that Marvin was SPECIAL No matter what he sang about, I could feel his energy. Especially, TROUBLE MAN. I have grown, matured spiritually, emotionally and psychologically to comprehend what he meant when he sang that song. Many of the songs he sang, like MAKE ME WANNA HOLLER and WHAT'S GOING ON are still relevant today as they were 40 years ago. His tragic and certain departure from this life was sad. I hope that he finally found peace. He will never be forgotten.
To this day and until the day I die I will continue to listen to Marvin Gayes music. His lyrics and songs pull at my heart strings, awaken my mind and stir up the spirit within me. Look at the world today in 2020 and take a minute to listen to Mercy Mercy Me; so relevant and so true. Marvin Gayes music and legacy will last for an eternity. Such a sensitive soul. Hope to see him next lifetime ❤❤❤

I never heard him speak so sensitive and kind. He brought the tension and passion and pathos of our cities and culture of that time, woven in his magical music and thoughtful insights. Whenever I watch the Vimeo version of Inner City Blues it brings me to tears. Marvin you’re a giant and you live on in the spirit of your music. ❤
This man and his music were the quintessential soul. The blessing and the curse, the tragedy and the eternal. His music hits deep in the lives of people born years after he left. His message resonates with the strange resemblances between our time and his, the weight of the issues. I'm too young to have lived in the same world he did, but I'm glad he's still relevant and potent in mine
Man, he looked so tired.. I loved the interview and was sad at the exact same time. What a supreme talent. He was truly out of f***s to give. Rest in peace, Marvin. Your music lives on.
Just finished Jan Gaye's "After the Dance My Life with Marvin Gaye" this interview makes so much sense knowing what was going on in the background. He was a troubled soul, but bared his soul with his fans. His demeanor matches exactly what was in the book. Makes me appreciate his music more.
I felt him when he said that he was afraid if he ever fell in love again and he met the wrong woman he didn’t imagine he would live, he had a fragile heart. I feel the same brother Marvin, you were here and gone before I was born but you have touched generations, and what you gave during your lifetime will never be matched. ❤
This is a really sad and very haunting video of this legend. As some others have noted, his speaking voice was as incredible as his singing voice. RIP Marvin
in order to sing about PAIN ... you have to FEEL it ... Soul and Blues music, as well as Reggae and Hip Hop, are/WERE all about PAIN. Mostly Ghetto Pain. Marvin Gaye is one of those who presented it all in the most artistic way, which made us all FEEL it just like he did. Except when the song was over, his deeper personal pain remained. REST IN PEACE King. Thank you for the amazing music.
I saw in his autobiography that when he was down and out and living abroad, Berry Gordy his brother in law and boss at that time told him to get his shit together because a princess from a country wanted Marvin to give her a concert on her birthday, Marvin told her hell no! He wasn't doing it! Can you imagine that! This man is telling a princess of a country No! And then to read about Jane Fonda who said her biggest regret is that she didn't sleep with him before he died, she found out after his death he kept a picture of her on his icebox door, she said when he was living he tried to get with her but she turned him down because she was married, she would later divorce her husband and remarry, but she said she regretted not hooking up with Marvin, daaummmmm Marvin!!!!
If a person has nothing but love in his heart but never finds out how or where to distribute his love to the world, he will kill himself in one way or another. Even when you listen to the song called starry starry night by don mclean, there is a lyric that says. "You took your life as lovers often do" referring to Vicent van Gogh. This song was also Tupac's favorite song. Poetry in motion!
This man's music has meant so much to me throughout my life. I can't believe this is the first time I've seen hem speak. He's so intelligent, sensitive and forthright.
"I Want You" is a good album but it's pretty much a Leon Ware album featuring Marvin. For Me "What's Goin' On", "Let's Get It On" and "Midnight Love" are his masterpieces.

He was deep, true artist with his thought perspective. 22:49 was an elaborate answer to a simple but loaded question. As someone who has mostly created in my youth and for my living, I feel what he was feeling. As a loner by choice as a kid I felt that, and how it allows me to sustain as an adult now with a family but still comfortable with time alone. I really appreciate this interview being captured and now available to watch and learn more of him.
My mom introduced me to Marvin Gaye music at a really early age and now I’m 35, this is the first time I’ve ever heard him speak in an interview. Thanks so much for uploading. May he continue to R.I.P.
I think what's so awfully sad is that the man that killed him which was his father, was the man that controlled him all his life until he took his son's life, he was never freed or accepted by his father and it destroyed him mentally, emotionally.
Great interview ! As an artist myself I understand/felt every word. His way of expressing his imperfections was flawless & his honesty was rare. A true artist. A true legend 🙏🏾
What an emotional man. I still love his song "To keep you satisfied" because he sang with so much feeling about Anna Gordy( his first wife)and the strain on their marriage. It must have been very intense. In the end he bids her farewell but gives her some hope. Such a well written song and finely executed.
“Of course one could never be a fine artist if one has not experienced most of life’s negatives and most of life’s positives.” Marvin says he’s, “gone from the depths of degradation…to the heights of spirituality.” I enjoyed listening to his thoughts at that time in his life and career. 🍞
I'm a mid 70s baby('74) and grew up on a STEADY DOSE of MG and Motown. I remember sitting at the dinner table and hearing it on the news playing...just sad and tragic, we all battle with demons within AND without, please work on healing and rectifying BOTH problematic issues...RIP MG
He breaks it down so well at the part where he speaks of the music industry not giving black artists the credit they deserve starting around 23:00 is wow, dead on. It’s been done for years. Lesser now. Also, his sadness is so apparent I hope people tried to be there for him through the depression. It’s heartbreaking.
Interesting...being my first time hearing Marvin speak I will say I never expected him to talk in the cadence that he did...he's obviously very self-involved and ego-centric yet humble at the same time...an anomaly, for sure...we are blessed to have his art.
To this day and the rest of my life I will cherish him and his 'What's Going On' album for being most relevant and genius music ever done. Rest easy 💔 Marvin. You are loved...
For him to be fully aware of his “shortcomings” is just absolutely astounding. What an amazing person. I hope he knew how much he was loved and how his music would live on, much longer than he did here on earth ❤
Growing up, Marvin's music was always in the air. Somehow, I never grew to much appreciate it... then. However, I've recently rediscovered his music and have developed a new, deep appreciation for it. Now, after this interview, my respect and appreciation of his humility, humanity, and artistry will grow even deeper. I grew up in the 90s listening to his music , and this is literally the first time I’m hearing him actually speak. He looks rather defeated , but at the same time he seems very much witty and introspective. The type of guy that would get lost in musings of the way the world works and human behavior. He also seems like the observant type, he probably would notice things you wouldn’t think he would but he wouldn’t say anything right away. It seems that what he is alluded to is that he was stuck in a between a rock and a hard place like we seeing newer artists hinting at nowadays, where at a certain point you hit a wall in your career that you have to make some choices that ant too cool , and he probably felt trapped because it seems he had more to play with musically but he didn’t want to sell out in order to get it
When he said my depression comes from the empathy that I have for humanity my emotions.... mmm who else felt that?

A lot of young men today need to hear him speak about it
The sexiest man ever graced music, and with voice and talent to match his looks.
I wish he knew how much he was loved by his fans 🥰
He does now. 💗
He knew .. but he wanted love feom his dad and ex wife not us ❤️
Fans are solely just a by product but are never the means to an end.
He was considered the "Black Frank Sinatra" of his era. Your comments are spot-on!!!
💯
@@katmartin62 Marvin Gaye, true passion was singing standards, big band music.
Ty for your comment 💕
Wow, never knew how deep Marvin's depression went. A very fragile, deep thinking and empathetic dude. A genius mind and good communicator hence the superb quality of his music.
Totally agree
He was so right about the World being in a horrible place. He was insightful along with deep dysfunction . His openness about his depression & suicide attempt is remarkable. I admire his transparency.
The world still in a horrible place.
Actually the world is worst than ever I’m a 90’s kid and this artist was able to depict all the devastating things way back then which is even more apparent today! Rip Mr.Gaye the resurrection is soon to come.
A lot of artist were going through it. Donnie H. committed suicide right around this time a few years earlier.
It's just a negative vibe that has been passed and handed down through every generation......that most will grab like a baton to run to recycle. It's kind of crazy how easy it is for anyone that believes themselves to be depressed/chooses to exercise depression to gravitate towards harming and killing themselves.
It still is. And it will never change.
Just realizing how handsome Marvin Gay was. Gorgeous man 🥰
Yes!
Very handsome indeed
Oh yes he was gorgeous.
I remember my mom saying, “And all the girls liked him.” Beautiful man, indeed.

@@thomaswashington2127 why?🙈
He said that the state of humanity was a source of his depression. I felt the same during that time frame, and since then. His song "What's Going On" evokes that feeling of melancholy. The 60's were wonderful and horrible at once. His music captured all of it.
He never needed awards.
RIP Marvin
Indeed his empathy for the world ran deep and it was too much at times
Still can't believe his father killed him smh
@@MacNif It's what he wanted, though.
That voice. His intelligence. His thoughtfulness. A tremendous and powerful person. Wow. Thank you Mr. Gaye. 🙏🏾
Marvin will never be replicated. His music gets inside- it isn't only beautiful it 'gets to you'. Somehow he knew how to do that, and he realized it. I know his 'habits' had a negative effect- but his soul will live forever. RIP Marvin- you're missed terribly
The industry beat him down, but he still remained optimistic and true to himself. R.I.P. Marvin
The old music industry was brutal and ran by gatekeepers. It still is, they just pivoted and got into bed with streaming services to exploit artists material for pennies on the dollar in exchange for equity stake in companies like spotify.
We do r.i.p. we live on stop saying r.i.p.
@@adphoto5681 Dumb comment. Why are you trying to start an argument over nothing?
@@MsAppassionata Why are you adding another level? 😉
It's not about guns, it's about violence. If there was no gun, he would have used a knife or club.
"gun Violence"? His own Father killed him. If he stabbed him, would it be "Knife violence"?
Just look at the pain in his eyes , it says a thousand words . RIP Marvin , I got teary watching this ❤️

Marvin was my crush in the sixties. He was so handsome and gifted
He loved emotional drama and would often sabotage his own happiness
Too bad a lot of women cant be self held accountable. But yes he did like the drama, yes there was a sense of arrogance yes he was a tortured Soul, sometimes self-inflicted. Some argue, he committed suicide by having his father kill him, he did give his father the gun.
Truth Indeed

Wow, what a brilliant, eloquent, empathic, soft-spoken gem of an artist!!!!! Introverted, empaths even when famous, do suffer in silence and are heavily tortured by the injustices in the world. Rest on, Marvin.
Beautiful soul. I still listen to Marvin's perfect voice. It's like silk. He is missed.
It’s soo sad when the world can see the beauty in you but you can’t see in in yourself smh
The devil will do that through sin. That’s why I praise Jesus. 🙏 Have a blessed day
He looked at his gift as a service to others rather than benefitting himself. He also had a carreer at the time when artists where treated like shit by corporate America and record labels. Marvin was not accepting of the things that they wanted him to do at Motown.Story was that he and Barry had many heated arguments because of what he refused to do but Anna( his first wife) put the fire to his feet. If you notice in Anna's interview she said that they put up with a lot. They pampered Marvin a lot. If you read Jan's book she wrote about him being unpredictable. If he had commitments he would sometimes ignore them and not give a damn about how it would affect others involved. Marvin was free spirited and they expected conformity. You would think that this kind of person would be hard to live with. Don't know how he stayed married to both wives for so long. Jan said that she ate, slept and breathed Marvin until the drugs and the jealousy began to terribly affect both of their lives.
Like most people I think that he just wanted to be loved. But Marvin loved hard and was hurt easily by it.
He was handsome n smooth n so will spoken. His speaking voice is hypnotic. They way he is real about life. I don’t seem troubled. I see a man with a big heart.

Does anybody see a broken soul? RIP One of the most down to earth caring people to ever grace this earth, such a shame he died so young 😢
Well said

His intelligence is mind-blowing. He is a genius musically, intellectually etc. I could listen to him all day.

Marvin Gaye is one of those who presented it all in the most artistic way, which made us all FEEL it just like he did. Except when the song was over, his deeper personal pain remained.

Marvin Gaye touched my soul as a child of the 60’s . . .
Only love can conquer hate are prophetic words of God . . .

Powerful and heartwrenching... Also, the death of Tammi Terrell affected him very deeply. Both gone too soon. 💕
I think what's so awfully sad is that the man that killed him which was his father, was the man that controlled him all his life until he took his son's life, he was never freed or accepted by his father and it destroyed him mentally, emotionally.

What an emotional man. I still love his song "To keep you satisfied" because he sang with so much feeling about Anna Gordy( his first wife)and the strain on their marriage. It must have been very intense. In the end he bids her farewell but gives her some hope. Such a well written song and finely executed.
I think Marvin never stopped loving Anna. She was his soulmate.
I’ve always read that the entire “I Want You” album was about Jan. He wrote the “Hear My Dear” album for Anna as part of the divorce settlement.

He was a beautiful man, with a wonderful mind and soul.
