“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.” - John Rogers

I love that line because Kurt Vonnegut is one of my favorite writers, and Ayn Rand one of my most hated. Vonnegut made all of his points with comical satire, while Rand took herself far too seriously, Vonnegut's satire is the only appropriate response to Rand's nonsense.

Vonnegut has my favorite quote about writing of all time.
'Still and all, why bother? Here's my answer: Many people need desperately to receive this message: "I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people don't care about them. You are not alone.”'
His advice on writing is a pretty big influence on me.

Year after year I am increasingly convinced that Zack will always be my favorite emcee of all time. Nobody can touch him. He has vocabulary like aesop, algorithm only misses him because he's not as prolific or they sleep on him and don't even categorize him with hip hop. His delivery is crisp and vicious, and deeply emotive. Nobody EVER had to tell that man to do it again with feeling. He raps about historical events and social/political/economic theory. People talk shit that they've seen him rock Nikes or whatever, like its hypocritical or he sold out, but the thing is they're asking him to shut up because he has money. They're not mad he sold out, they're mad he DIDN'T sell out. You can bury Zack in money and nice things and he STILL wants to burn down the white house and the billionaires' mansions. One of the most successful people on earth to say "I don't give a fuck if I got mine, no rest until EVERYBODY got what they need."

0:56 Excellent point my dude. While many people believe Ulysses S. Grant (the bearded dude on the $50) couldn't have owned slaves, history contradicts this ill conceived notion.
Gifted to Grant by his father-in-law, Frederick Fayette Dent, a slave by the name William Jones was a slave to Ulysses S. Grant for about a year.
Grant signed a manuscript giving William Jones his freedom in 1859 (two years before the American Civil War).
My opinion on the matter is a mixed bag. Sure, Grant gave William Jones his freedom... It doesn't change the fact that he owned a fellow human being. His response to the war's reasons was also apathetic in regards to slavery. I imagine his response of now becoming a slave owner was the same as his response to abolition as a whole... inconsequential as a whole in the scope of the nation.
Grant didn't hate black people. Grant was like many other white people back then... and right now. People like this are cold and unresponsive to the qualms they assist in perpetrating.
They do not care about the things that do not affect them, the immediate people around them, or the communities they dwell in.
The terrible things that happen to others may as well be news from a different planet... the excess and residue of their influence seeps deeply into the livelihoods of fellow man, yet they are too preoccupied by proactively looking ahead toward the horizon.
When fellow man taps their shoulder to raise awareness of the dangers looming behind, annoyance is often times the response by the ones always looking ahead. Behind their cold shoulders... fellow man is caught in a stranglehold. his cries for help are yet another annoyance to the ones who would plead ignorance to the suffering behind them.
In many ways, we (each of us) are like Grant. We perpetuate suffering because that is the perceived "ways of the time." To speak out against suffering would be social upheaval; to actively disestablish those pillars of evil would be insurrection... so apathy is our calling card... time and time again.
In 2021, I no longer place the color of a person's skin for this perpetuation of apathy. It is a crime which mankind as a whole is guilty of. I see different minority groups lending no aid to one another in times of hardship and crisis. We are desensitized to the suffering of one another, as though the pain we carry outweighs that of the person standing at our side. This is an atrocity which all of us are just as guilty of. We, all of us, and none of us, are better than Ulysses S. Grantin this aspect.

RTJ is easily one of the greatest Hip Hop groups ever. To often we're told a culture belongs to one person or group and RTJ shows that Hip Hop crosses lines just like groups like Seven Dust and Living Color did for rock/metal. Hip Hop has belonged to EVERYONE since back in the day. The Beastie Boys and House of Pain are just as influential as Grandmaster Flash and Run DMC. It's not supposed to be white vs. black. It's all of us vs the system that oppresses everyone.

Nice, knowledgeable reacc. One note I want to make.. because we love the music, I want to give props to the collage video artist.. there is some fire shit there too! The gun made of cellphones, neatly encapsulating government surveillance, the donkey and elephant political icons swapping elements , and many other very quick and concise visual constructions that concisely and effectively portray the lyrics.

I could be wrong, but pretty sure that's a picture of John Houseman (possible reference to the film Paper Chase). The line is definitely comparing Vonnegut and Rand, I didn't catch it at first, glad you did. If that's not John Houseman someone please let me know

Your line of the song is just one before mine. "They love to not love, it's just that dumb." Fuck, if that isn't the perfect description of every Randian objectivist I've met.

I've only learned about Rand in the last 6mos or so and have been researching philosophies around the same highway exit as hers. While it didn't take me long to realize that Ayn was not the greatest person, and anybody I know of that claim to be an Objectivist or Randian, seem like people I would not like or see eye to eye with, but I'm curious, what is the main difference between Objectivism and Individualism? I got interested in anarchism a while back from reading Thoreau which led me to Berkman, then Stirner, Goldmann and by Warren I started to realize that anarchism had many branching philosophies, which eventually led to Individualism and Rand.
I mean from what I've read, they are similar, and Individualism is what Rand started at as a basis when developing Objectivism, I just can't seem to fine a clear answer or explanation of what makes one different, better or worse. I found one article claiming that Objectivism is just a form of, or under the umbrella of, Individualism, IDK, any thoughts you could throw my way would be greatly appreciated. I'm fairly new to all this philosophy and deep logic type subjects, never thought in a million years the articles and books I've been reading the last year would be of any interest to me, now I can't get enough of them.

I got it! You helped but, the double at 7:30 Vonnegut delivered a gut punch to the Atlas (the globe), and the world shrugged back and kept going... maybe I'm wrong? Sounds right?. Ill also add that a gut punch would make it hard to hold the glove on your shoulders.
