plus I feel like the way he says his lines sounds so much more emotionally connected with the song than the way Henry Rollins does it on the studio recording
so henry rollins is not a genuine artist? u might prefer one version over the other, thats called art, but dissing rollins??? u are a complete idiot!! i prefer almost anything maynard and zak have done over any of his stuff, but he has been creative in multiple genres of art . so i guess , since u say he is a sellout, then he is right on par with maynard, right? just listen to hooker with a penis, thats right maynard is a self-proclaimed sellout. anyway i am sure rollins would thank u for the complement

First time I ever saw tool (and rage) they did this track together. Lollapalooza 93 at some big ass airfield in Rhode Island. I was 14. Such great shows back in the day... Alice In Chains were there too, while Layne was still pretty functional...
Just thought I should post this in case it's of help to anyone...this transcription is entirely based on my own listening (carefully, and having listened to endless hours of Zack's vocals over the last 15 years (point being, I know his voice)), not copy pasted from anywhere. Zack: I've grown to know you You, a tangle within myself And you held my head straight to face you, Though I twisted and winced to try to tear you away You got my eyes And I got your genes And I got your skin And I voice your screams I'm thrown, falling through a dark way And I can't find the bottom I panicked, and gnashed my teeth and I flailed But still I can't find the bottom It's only there That someone can tell me that it isn't what it seems Son you got my eyes And son you'll voice my screams I'm shameless now I'm nameless now I'm noone now I'm nothing now But my soul must be iron Because my fear is naked I'm naked and fearless And my fear is naked
A quick word on interpretation -- from my point of view, this is like, Zack talking to his shadow, which is represented at least partly through the figure of his father (or something along those lines, anyhow. If it sounds like star wars, that's because star wars was inspired by Jung too, and this stuff is all actually just a way of talking about how human selves are, so these dynamics pop up all over the place), and it talking back to him (the parts about, Son you got my eyes). If you think about it, it really puts a fine point on how deeply personal at least some of Rage's music is to him..especially the stuff that touches on latino/hispanic identity and history and fight for liberation.
I wish there was a studio recording of this version though. But they didn't have Zack de la Rocha do a part for it until after undertow had already been released. plus it's kind of out of tool's style to put two versions of one song on an album.
Wow.... this is the first time I've heard this(2022). I can't believe this collab existed between these bands that I've listened endlessly to for many many years. That part with Zach and Maynard screaming my soul MUST BE IRON! CUZ MY FEAR IS NAKED! I'M NAKED AND FEARLESS! HOLY FKJSDF&@#*(@ it makes me cry so hard.
who gives a shit about Henry Rollins why don't you all shut up and enjoy this incredibly rare version of Bottom with Zach OMG at about 6 mins in he absolutely kills it. I can't believe someone found this thank you so much!! I am speechless.
lol Zack looks like "hey man... um... can I.. can I have the mic now?.." *maynard keeps the same facial expression, makes no eye contact and puts his arm towards him with the mic* Zack says "um.. so does that.. does that mean I can have it now for my part?"
Amazing... this brings back memories. I was at that show in NJ. 19 years old and seeing my favorite bands: Rage, Tool, and Primus. Tool was on the side stage with maybe 100 people. 30 years later I am going to see Rage with my daughter in August. Cannot wait.
there's more commonality here than i think some people realise, in the themes these two great bands explore(d). freedom is at the root of it. for tool, it is about psychic, mental freedom. for rage, it is about political freedom. but the two are not disconnected from each another. both are about liberation from oppression -- one, in the mind, in one's closest relationships, and the other in the political realm, but they share this link. something that the artists themselves are no doubt aware of
also, thanks a bunch for uploading this! -- the quality is soooo much better than the bootleg that i had of it. you can actually hear zack (i'm a huge RATM fan as well as being a huge Tool fan so this track is pretty awesome for me)
Burned this album to CD-R back in highschool. Ended up with this version of Bottom and it’s been my preferred one ever since listening to that CD over and over 😎
Really wish Zack did more stuff with Tool, even for a quick guest verse on one of their albums. Besides anger he also deals with themes of spirituality and personal struggles, which fit with the band incredibly well.
also, i've noticed that if you turn up the treble a bit (or i guess you could fiddle with your equalizer) it cleans the sound up a bit more, makes it less distorted/bassy.
Brad Wilk the drummer from Rage Against The Machine ? You say he is playing bass and not Tim C. who is the bass player from RATM * Audioslave (yuck!) & the shameful Profits Of Rage? BTW....Profits Of Rage are ridiculous. They are literally profiting off of RATM tracks without the writer of the lyrics and who originally performed all those tracks they basically just do live covers of...
He is using feedback, i.e. turning his guitars mics towards the speakers of his amplifiers so the signal loops, together with a fretted note on the guitar
Zach is always cooler than Henry Rollins. Don't believe me? Where is Henry Rollins now? A sellout on a TV show. How cute, a punk icon. Zach has faded into obscurity as he should.
This is the most powerful performance of Bottom in my opinion.
Agreed. Zack stole the show here. He also got Maynard fired up with his lyrics. Amazing
You're 100 % right
agreed
I've nothing against Henry Rollins but I totally agree
I love how Zach makes changes to the breakdown verse/poem to something close to him and his own life struggles. Sounded pretty wicked. Thanks for this
plus I feel like the way he says his lines sounds so much more emotionally connected with the song than the way Henry Rollins does it on the studio recording
Totally. Rollins is a sellout liberal dipshit. Zach and Maynard are genuine artists.
