Bro, manual for life. You were wrong to prefer the automatic based on feelings. 1. Clutch+throttle is superior to automatic in mitigating slides, whether intended or not. A manual+RWD gives more control than any auto+RWD in low-traction conditions. 2. Automatics just go fast, that's all they can do. Buy an automatic if that's what you need. 3. Any BMW manual transmission will be easier, cheaper to repair, while also being far more mechanically reliable. Automatics are fundamentally and definitively more complex and have quantity more points of failure than any manual anywhere. CVTs are a really really good reason to buy a manual. I don't mean to diminish your 'feelings' and how that leans your preferences and proclivities. I just mean to check those feelings in favor of an objective, not feelings-based argument for manuals for life. And just to include my credentials, I have a Class A license and driven many trucks+trailers both auto and manual, some with as many as 48 tires. I've driven every terrain, in an enormous myriad of vehicles across over 2 million documents miles. I also operate heavy construction equipment, bulldozers have clutches manuals, graders have a clutched manual, plus all kinds of tractors. I also lived in Germany for 5 years and had quite a lot of experience in the all-new for 2006 3-series, diesels, petrol, and my boss got a new 2009 M3 that year, drove him home from the bar in it many times. Manual. Manuals for life dude. They're mechanically, reliably, functionally, fundamentally superior to modern (post-2000) automatic transmissions. Say no to automatics, unless you're chasing 10ths. Every other use of a fast car is better with a manual. It's not really driving if your only control over the transmission is throttle on the engine and brakes on the wheels.
Awesome vid! Just two things to note: - F8X is much stiffer than the E9X (almost 2x) - IMO ZCP is just as useless on the F8X platform, especially if you do suspension mods or tuning. Primary power improvements in the F8X platform over time are due to global iStep (firmware) updates affecting power delivery and shifting of all models.
clearances are generally bigger on M cars, so that on the race track when things heat up those clearances close up. So babying them around to take the kids to school isn't a great idea. Oil consumption will be through the roof too.
I jumped from an E90 325i to M2 Competition. Still the steering feel was something I miss about the E90. Amazingly M2 Comp is doing similar fuel economy to 325.
Dailied the one I bought in March for 18 weeks till I sold it. Just never loved it and the ridiculous mpg (17) never quite rewarded me with smiles. Super quick and capable cars but not exciting enough for me as it’s just a big heavy saloon Too quiet standard but bsck box mod soon sorts that Glad I owned one but 100 metres test driving a 996 Carrera made me realise that power isn’t everything to make a car an exciting car to drive
I bought my e92 m3 comp on 100k, I’m now just below 130k miles, couldn’t be happier. Been serviced properly and so far very happy and haven’t had a single issue. I’m a Porsche race mechanic and I work on my own cars so I did my rod bearings myself
How expensive was it to do it all yourself? I’m a mechanic at Mercedes and work on my own cars too so don’t have to pay for labour. I’m thinking of getting an e90 m3 saloon DCT but am a bit on the fence about how much the parts are going to cost.
Epic car. For me its great for everyday use also. On 18'' wheels its very comfortable and looks perfect to me (bmw 220 rims). The torque on low rpms is more than anough for public roads. In accelerates better on 7th gear pull than my f36 428i which is a quite fast everyday car. On the highway cruising (140 - 150kmh) it takes 12,5l/100km, so it gives about 480km of range - not bad. Another great thing is that on standard exhaust is quiet and comfortable while cruising, but starts to scream beautifully and loud enough just when you want it.
So what your saying is take out the V8 and put in a 2JZ or American V8 lol got it. My buddy had a coupe and traded it in after a year because of the bearings. He was and still is a BMW tech to
So a little bit of comparison to my 2011 Mustang GT as a daily. Also 16 gal tank, also 400hp and 3600lbs. On the Highway I can get about 22-24mpg so VERY similar hwy fuel economy. At a 65mph cruise you'll get up to 26mpg on a long drive. In the city I get about 15-16mpg. My Lowest was about 8mpg when I first got the car, and best city was 17mpg but I legit got passed by a city bus. That entire summer I used so much gas, fill up every 2 or 3 days. Coyote Mustangs are about 12-22k so in the same sort of price range. But to make it even remotely not scary handling wise, you gotta tip your wallet in. I'm about $7300 (CAD) in wheels, tires, suspension, diff modifications. With just $3k in wheels and fat 285 Indy 500s on all 4 corners, I was able to chase down your average M3 buyer (young dude who bought it for the status and doesn't know how to drive fast properly). The rest of my suspension mods hasn't made the car faster or turn in better on corner entry, but it has made it much easier to put the power down on corner exit and won't unload the suspension as suddenly. However I have an Eaton Posi, 2nd gear corners I gotta tip toe around my diff, its really aggressive and will spit the back end out, so back to back low speed corners I struggle with. However anything third gear or faster I can go WOT just before the apex and put all that power down. Only issues I've had are Alternator and AC compressor bearings failing on me. Not sure they like 7500rpm. The biggest thing about the Mustang is the MT82 being absolute dog shit. But the Ratios on it are so perfectly suited for the engine, especially if you have the 3.73. I drove a 3.31 5.0L Mustang and it felt like a dog. the 3.73 is what you want (or 3.55 for Auto).
@@TedwardDrives what did it end up making for numbers if you don't mind my asking? I saw that he recently got Dinan certified, been trying to get my buddy to bring his E60 M5 over that way but he wants me to go with him when I get my car, lol.
I'm a hardcore manual guy too, but I agree with you about the E92 ///M. The gear spacing/clutch takeup/flywheel weight of the car doesn't mesh very well with the manual.

Yo, mate! For the brake sensors, just cut them, strip the insolation on the tip, connect the 2 wires to close the circuit, and reset from the service menu. Enjoy!

65k miles - no issues with bearings (but I never cold revved it, always used proper oil, always warmed it up before going full out, not driven in winter weather)
My seating position seems fine (seat adjustments?) - also have a 911 Turbo S (which is lower) ... perhaps I need to check again :)
Squeaks, rattles and buzz ... NOTHING!
Issues:
Coolant expander tank started to leak (the seams failed on the plastic weld).
Servo hose clips ... said good-bye after a drift session (most likely pressure due to constant max steering and back-forth
Soft-plastic around steering wheel buttons ... love the feel, hate the falling off
Micro switches on the paddle shifters (assuming), don't change gears (up or down) ...bit nervous messing with it due to air-bag ($1,500 estimate to repair)
ESC button(s) ... old-back-clip broke so button keep falling off ($1,500 repair estimate - $150 replacement part)
man i love that hood when ur driving it looks so cool the bump
Also worth noting that there is nobody home until 4K RPM with these engines.
Just like my GT350
Could watch this all day
Just started playing the podcast and now just got an upload notification
Legend
If you’ve cut the brake pad wear sensors, just twist the wires together and it’ll close the circuit and not show the warning.
* The i in ITB stands for individual, NOT independent. The throttle bodies are not suspension components, they are rigidly-mounted and linked-together but separate individual throttles.
Audio was wonderful, thank you
Totally agree on the manual box comment, not all manuals are the same.
Love the review. Had same sentiments when I had mine for a year and a half. Certainly get envious of the accord drivers when stopping to gas station multiple time a week! Lol
Soon it will be a dream car among the legends... Reving 8200 engine, only v8 in m3 history, last m3 coupe, time resiting design... Just wonderful, I also bought on as yours with palladium silver seats, but I chosen the e93 chassis to enjoy the sound a bit more... 😅😉.
Another awesome video. I was close to buying one but didn't. It wasn't the rod bearings or TB actuators that deterred me. Silly as it sounds, it was the high seats that made me feel like I was sitting on a toilet bowl.
😂 hahaha that’s a great description
I loved the tactile feel of my 2008 Audi everything was so bare bones so nice
I just saw an M6 in limp mode on the way home.
Classic!

a few wks ago I saw an e46 at Lowes that caught fire an hr before I got there. Front tires exploded. Total mess. Thankfully dude was inside the store
3:03 he's right, we do charge as hefty price to do S65 bearings...
this was the best video going over the car great job ima sub
Thanks David
The e92 has always been one of if not my favorite bmws ever made but I’ve been thinking about getting a used m4 instead. Although after watching this video im sold on the e92 can’t wait to get my hands on one in June !
How's your E92 going?
Another great video Ted!! & the weather is just amazing!! Keep it up mate!
Thank you! We just got our first snow today so thinking of fun winter videos to make already
@@TedwardDrives That' looks awesome mate! Waiting for winter videos!
“Don’t wanna be responsible... for that”😂
Bro, manual for life.
Just two things to note:
- F8X is much stiffer than the E9X (almost 2x)
- IMO ZCP is just as useless on the F8X platform, especially if you do suspension mods or tuning. Primary power improvements in the F8X platform over time are due to global iStep (firmware) updates affecting power delivery and shifting of all models.
F8x have different diff ratios actually !
clearances are generally bigger on M cars, so that on the race track when things heat up those clearances close up. So babying them around to take the kids to school isn't a great idea. Oil consumption will be through the roof too.
For the Brake light you can put a wire that joints the + and - from sensor connector and the light will go away
I have watched soo many of your videos and I am congratulating you in advance for successful full time RUclipsr...
Thank you!!
@@TedwardDrives no, thank you for amazing content
That’s free horsepower weather! Very nice!
Haha I like that
Nice Tom...winter is fine...tires and skill..and knowing your own limits
My absolute favorite generation M3 absolutely gorgeous ❤🔥❤🔥❤
you can cut the brake pad sensors and solder the wires together, will get rid of the brake sensor warnings
Super quick and capable cars but not exciting enough for me as it’s just a big heavy saloon
Too quiet standard but bsck box mod soon sorts that
Glad I owned one but 100 metres test driving a 996 Carrera made me realise that power isn’t everything to make a car an exciting car to drive
the set, the colours and the camera angle are just amazing! without mentioning the car haha :D
This was the video I needed before buying one.
8:40 This is so true that I wanna cry.
I got 33 mpg in my 17' SS going to michigan. Good stuff.
Oem exhaust mod is a must. Also a manual. I miss mine everyday
such a clean interior
Beautiful soundtrack, great cars if you get a goodie, if not can be so very disappointing and expensive, great video, thanks for this advice.
He was and still is a BMW tech to
Tedward needs more subs his channel is amazing
hes at 102k now
So a little bit of comparison to my 2011 Mustang GT as a daily.
Glad to know Bren likes to deal with these cars. Planning on getting one and have been to his shop at least 10 times now lol.
He tuned the car around 50k miles...now at 95k haha..she pulls nicely!
@@TedwardDrives what did it end up making for numbers if you don't mind my asking? I saw that he recently got Dinan certified, been trying to get my buddy to bring his E60 M5 over that way but he wants me to go with him when I get my car, lol.
I guess I'm a bit late, but if you cut the brake pad sensor lines you can short the wires together to avoid the error code.
I'm a hardcore manual guy too, but I agree with you about the E92 ///M. The gear spacing/clutch takeup/flywheel weight of the car doesn't mesh very well with the manual.
We could be friends. Its really hard to explain this to people.
you cant rush them manuals gearbox is horrible.
@@incognito96 I remember jumping into a Camaro Z28 after driving a manual M3...It was night and day. The Z28 box could take ANYTHING you threw at it. If you did that to a BMW gearbox it would shatter lol
I personally still like my e46 inline 6 naturally aspirated engine
Like the man says, they are wonderful, but not cheap to drive. I pretty much get 15 MPG, at best. in the city. But what a blast to drive. They are pretty DIY friendly though..
Finally. A video I wanted to know about. I’m considering an e92 6 or 8 cyl whatever, just don’t want to throw money for bs like brake sensors going out or some little solenoids and switches giving me headaches
Every car has brake sensors so don’t count that one
@@TedwardDrives I know. I had a buddy with a 2008 3 series which had them go out all the time. That, then the interior cup holders wouldn’t pop out, leaky oil filter gasket, valve cover gaskets. No major issues, just those little naggy things to bother all the time.
Yo, mate! For the brake sensors, just cut them, strip the insolation on the tip, connect the 2 wires to close the circuit, and reset from the service menu. Enjoy!
Thanks! That works to turn out the yellow light. Unfortunately you Still have to unplug and plug back in every 50k miles to tell the computer that you “did a brake job” 😂
@@TedwardDrives you shouldn't have to unplug them at the connector that's behind the wheel fairing. As long as you break the circuit by thaking the ends appart it sholud think it's unplugged. Bimmers are divas, they never make it easy.
I love my E92 M3 but I don't daily drive it. I keep it as my fun car so I can appreciate it every time I jump in :).
I love this Bmw m3. I have a BMW 335xi e90 performance edition with a DCT from 2011. I think that v8 is a fantastic engine but i like more the 3.0l i6 from BMW. Love the videos.
And exactly this is why I think the diesel 3 series with about 250 hp are really good. The consumption is better and I think you can even get it with a manual.
Friend has one and has hated and loved it more than anything
It’s a tragic relationship. Lots of push and pull at your heart 😆
