Michael was a very emotive singer. He wrote most of the lyrics for INXS and he never said anything he didn't mean. This song is about someone who he considered to be his true love, but they were no longer together when he wrote it, so there ya go. He could change up his tone depending on the song and he was one of the most captivating front men in all of rock. As a unit, this band was so tight that they were known as one of the best live acts in the world during their heyday. Everyone is saying official video for Need You Tonight, and I agree, but please don't do it without Mediate. They are a combo and need to be heard and watched together. I will also tell you that checking them out live from Wembley Stadium in 1991 is an absolute must. You could choose anything really but some stand outs are What You Need, Suicide Blonde and Original Sin. Hold onto your butt.
I think Mediate is my favorite INXS song, it's hard to say, so many great songs.

This was written to try and win Michelle back. Didn’t work. But, they remained close until he died.
I lived INXS back in the day. I was so disappointed when I finally saw them live because Michael was so off his face he couldn't really stand up. Most of the crowd left. I regret not seeing the whole bad perform well.
@@lone982 well I saw them in 91 during the Live Baby Live tour and they were all at the top if their game. Amazing show. I've seen countless live performances on YT spanning many years and everyone is always on point. Not sure when you saw them, but it seems like an anomaly.

Haunting, yes. Michael Hutchence was another amazing talent who lived a rather dark life and died way too soon. His voice is so beautiful and unique. I highly recommend listening to more INXS. They never disappoint.

Michael struggled during good part of his life, probably that’s what is impressed in his voice and you were sensitive enough to feel it.

As far as the reaction....this is one of those songs you CANNOT pause. The silent pauses are as much a part of the song as the music/vocals.
So, from a lover of music, do yourself a favor and listen again, uninterrupted. The song is magical.

I always saw the singer, Michael Hutchence, as a re-incarnated Jim Morrison. Kinda ended the same way as well. Awesome group and you'll be reacting to a bunch more songs.
Ha!...I had the apartment on the top floor next to that graveyard in the background to where Michael is walking...(only for a month)... and I met Michael a few times, a lovely, gentle man... a superstar here in Oz...INXS have a lot of good tracks 😎

Other than his voice, Michael was broken in many ways! The pain in his voice it what makes it so haunting. In my opinion anyways.

INXS were the top live band in the world in the 80's and 90's. You should watch them at Wembley. Parts of the concert are on youtube. A great loss to the music world. He was just 1 month older than me, being born in Jan 1960. He'd be my age of 61 right now if he was still alive. So tragic!
It's like the most perfect song ever written by any band. His voice was like honey. Just about every song he sang. Pure and powerful. He was what any Rock Star should be. There will never be another Michael Hutchence.
Thank you for mentioning his voice. I felt like I was the only one who is just in love with his voice. To me his voice is soothing and makes me feel warm, no matter what he signs. It settles me even when it is up beat. I just connect with it somehow.
He was like Paul Rodgers, a great rock voice for the ages.

This is one of my favorite songs by INXS and they have so many great hits!! Michael Hutchence was so amazing and so talented, my heart still hurts thinking about losing him! I loved INXS and I played the album Kick! over and over! His voice is very sexy and soothing, he was a special soul! 💖💖
A lovely reaction to a great, but underappreciated song. They had a beautiful, haunting (as you said) way to this brilliant, one -of-a-kind piece of music. So original. Haunting because the singer had a dark side that he could never bring into the light.

Micheal Hutchins fought a lot of demons, depression and substance abuse being at the forefront which drove him to suicide. This song is an example of how you can be in a loving relationship and still be extremely sad at the same time. This is a classic that I think only he could pull off.
This is one of my favorite songs of the 80s. Whenever I hear it, I feel transported to my childhood. Michael Hutchence had a certain charisma; I even felt that listening to the songs without seeing the music videos. Someone described him as similar to Jim Morrison, and I agree with that. He had that moody, mysterious, sexy vibe, in this song as well as in 'I Need You Tonight', among others.

You are incredibly perceptive. I'm so glad you finally discovered the one and only Michael Hutchence, an all-time best frontman. He was an amazing singer but ever knew it. If this song was bittersweet it's because he'd broken up with the girl he wrote it for, Michele. So incredibly underrated because of his physical beauty and charisma, but an incredible performer and songwriter. I love Disappear, which he wrote with drummer Jon Farris.
Plus...INXS is the GOAT of Oz. No other band from.there has ever come close.

To everyone claiming that Angela "ruined" the song by pausing right before the sax solo kicked in - you DO realize that this is a "First Time" Reactor's channel, right? NOT having heard the song before, she had no idea that the sax was about to kick in. And RUclips requires that a reactor pause at least once or be de-monetized. Also, telling her that she should listen to the songs BEFORE recording the reaction makes NO sense. Then it won't be her "first time" hearing a song, and her reaction won't be genuine. At least she doen't do what a number of other reactors do, and pause multiple times during the songs to make comments.
Loved this song in my melancholic youth chasing girls. I was 15 when it came out in 1987. Glad you enjoyed it and yes it is haunting.
Wow Girl you are very perceptive Michael was found in his hotel room dead, hung himself even though it happen a long time ago it's still hard for me to talk about (and I didn't even know Michael personally) but we are always proud of our Aussies who do well over seas because we are a small country by comparison to a lot of countries. X is for me their most pop album and my second favourite, whereas Welcome has the most variety and is easily the most creative. Baby Don't Cry and Beautiful Girl are some of my all time favourites from INXS and they're from that album. Favourite album overall is Kick, if nothing else just for Never Tear Us Apart, their greatest song in my opinion.

Of all the great punk rock bands and new wave bands of the 80s, INXS was one of those rare ones that just pushed the boundaries of sound, composition, lyrics and vocals combined. Just incredible talents.

His voice is a tenor. This band had it all. I like that this has kind of an orchestral arrangement. Anything with a horn, I like. Elements of real music. Real instruments.

Wrote the song for the woman he said he would have only married, his first true love. They were back and forth as he toured for years by that time and she let him go, telling him he needed to find himself. She was the last person he called just before hanging himself, probably ten years or more after he wrote this song for her, as they were breaking up btw. He became lost, especially after his TBI, traumatic brain injury. They were my favorite band growing up...still are in many ways. You have an intuitive soul.

Heartbreaking. The documentary “Mystify” was so enlightening as to his nature, talent, love for Michelle, TBI, etc. It has me going down the Michael Hutchence/INXS rabbit hole.
Haunting is a great description, Michael Hutchence voice was definitely his own. This entire album was so good. They connected so hard with teens at that time. Left us too soon. sad.

Michael and Andrew wrote the song right about the time Michael had a break-up with his first real and true girlfriend (of 7yrs) Michele Bennett. The rigors and shenanigans of touring, probably her that broke it off. That is probably the sadness you hear. I hear it too. It has been said that he told his mother that she was the one person that he would have married, at some point. His career exploded but they stayed friends over time.
Andrew starts with the musical idea and Michael usually writes the lyrics into it,
Michael took his own life, a troubled soul, who was a musical genius. RIP Michael.

Michael Hutchence was a beautiful man inside and out! He died way to soon. INXS tried to replace this magnetic lead singer but there was no use! I love his voice in all their music and they were all great musicians too! I love the whole "Kick" album!💖💖
I agree with you almost entirely, but if you like this song, I think you should listen to Afterglow with JD Fortune singing. It's an incredibly beautiful song... Michael would have done it wonderfully also, but I'm glad they recorded it just the same.
