  • On Saturday September 5th at 6pm, we are excited to offer a VIRTUAL TOUR of Rich Bireley’s COLOSSAL fishroom, followed by a live Q&A. Everyone is welcome.
Rich Bireley is a life member of the PCCA, SFAS and the Sacramento Aquarium Society. Rich has kept fish pretty much his whole life and does not remember not having tropical fish. That means he’s kept fish for a pretty long time unless you’re a Greenland shark. Rich is on his 3rd fish room, all of them fun, none of them automated. The current iteration is a 2,000 square foot monstrosity, er, insulated building next to the house. The building has about 130 aquaria set up inside and a substantial aquarium graveyard outside. Rich keeps just about any fish/critters that can be kept in freshwater, including catfish, livebearers, characins, oddballs (this covers everything not listed, such as native fish, tiger fish, polypterus…things like that), rainbows, cichlids, shrimp, snails, Corydoras, Synodontis, loricariids, oh, and more catfishes. Putting his strong back and weak mind to work, Rich acquired a 900 gallon and a 1,000 gallon tank, for free, kind-of. In addition, Rich has a tomato tub in the fish room. This beautiful and professional display is of fiberglass and measures 8’x24’ by 3’ deep. Rich is very practical; esoteric considerations rarely enter his mind. Rich lives with his wife and daughter on a ranch with dogs, horses, lots of hummingbirds, rattlesnakes (and other snakes and lizards, tons of frogs) and the ubiquitous collection of pitcher plants.
Please join us Saturday, Sept. 5th at 6pm on RUclips ( • Tour Rich Bireley's Fi... ). Gather your family together around your computer, or better yet, if you have an Amazon Fire TV Cube, you can use its RUclips app to watch on your television. Grab your dinner, your drinks and snacks; get comfy on your couch and enjoy another really cool fishroom tour, then stick around afterward and participate in the live-Q&A that follows. 🙂 Everyone is welcome to join us online. For more information, please visit SacramentoAquariumSociety.info/.
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL! In September, the Sacramento Aquarium Society is having ANOTHER MEMBERSHIP RAFFLE! At our September meeting, we will announce TWO WINNERS, drawn from all new and renewing memberships paid by the end of August. Winners GET TO CHOOSE their gift certificate from any of several SAS sponsors (value of gift certificates vary by sponsor).
A message from the Sacramento Aquarium Society: For the health and safety of our members and guests, the Sacramento Aquarium Society will not hold in-person general meetings until it is deemed safe to again gather in groups of 100 or more people. In the meantime, we are offer monthly ONLINE General Meetings, each streamed live on our RUclips channel ( / sacaquariumsociety ) and hosted by our own RUclipsr, Michael Pohl of #BayAreaAquatics. Rich could use a little tub of Meguiars acrylic glass cleaners😉..but I get it . I've had fish since the early 70's myself. Had them all..big fish, pond, saltwater. The cost of water, the fact I dont have the room for anything larger than the 240 I run now..means I look more than I buy nowadays.
I had forgotten I used to breed Corys- totally forgot..until he was talking about them. But most fish types I've bred also.
You cant have everything so lucky I got to keep what I kept, and I like my Rainbow and plant big tank. Their happy and so am I.

Really cool tour and some Amazing Fish Rich!! I totally remember Capitol Aquarium, downtown Sac...I'd put the quarter in the gumboil machines and feed the Koi with my daughters....Then I was out of the area for a minute, I come back and its shut down! Never heard what happened...I do remember that 1,000g, back left with of the place with a massive Arowana, RTC, Bala Shark and a Giant Gourami if I remember right...They also had an Electric Eel in that Far back room, far left with a Sign on the Tank!!....Good times...

I really enjoyed the tour, amazing to see so many different species. Also very cool that the polli may have originated from his wild adult group, definitely see them a lot more in the hobby now. I also have a group of yssichromis blue tips - glad to know there is someone else out there with them as its hard to find new lineage being extinct in wild.

Great Fish room! The tree frog issue is different for sure....Have they tried letting some tree boas loose in the fishroom? It may not rid the problem but it will help keep it in control

Adding a drip water change system wouldn't be hard at all in that fishroom. Simple PVC overflows don't require drilling the tanks and the materials to drop water to the tanks are available at dripdepot or other places. The added bonus is that the water from the system can be recycled in a garden or elsewhere. I built the system in my fishroom in zones - like sprinklers . Most of the work for water changes is now turning on the faucet.
