Weston McKennie was sent off for the US with the first red. The third goal was originally ruled offside, but on review they ended up allowing the goal. The people putting the highlight package together still apparently have some learning to do on how to put a Soccer match package together. The game was ended early because the Mexican fans were continuing to chant "discriminatory slurs" during the goal kicks. That's CONCACAF for you, it's a very crazy style of football.

Welcome to the USA-Mexico rivalry! If you think this was bad, you should check out the Round of 16 match between the USA and Mexico during the 2002 World Cup, a match full of cheap and dirty fouls. The chants that ended the match are what the US national team hear at almost every away match against Mexico or Central American opponents, as well as the debris being thrown at US players during these matches. As an American football fan, I THOROUGHLY enjoy every time we beat Mexico!

    Some clarification:
    1. The 3rd goal was the one you saw by Pepi. It was initially called offside but VAR confirmed the goal as on. It looks like the highlights are edited very poorly.
    2. The game ended early after an initial game stoppage for 'discriminatory chants' by the Mexico fans a few minutes earlier, and subsequent 2nd offense.
    3. That straight red by Mexico was after a string of extremely questionable/dangerous fouls, one leaving Gio Reyna's face bloodied.

      @Rush_Under Год назад +1

Re: 3rd point. Yes, the Reyna foul LOOKED bad, due to the blood, and initially I was all for a red being called for it. Looking at the replay though, the defender wasn't being malicious, it was just a shoulder to the nose. Wrong place, wrong time kind of play. Also, McKenna red flag was a little bogus to me, as I felt he was trying to defend himself after being completely surround and set upon by a lot of the Mexican players. I still have no clue why Pulisic got that yellow card, too.

The “discriminatory chant” is basically a feature of Mexico football fans at this point. They had to play a qualifier behind closed doors during the last cycle because of it. McKennie made contact with the throat of an opposition player. By rule, that is an automatic straight red.
Where it gets dodgy (and the reason it did *NOT* warrant a red card, IMO), is that he was being pushed about and surrounded by 7 Mexican players. One might easily infer that he simply put his hands up in self defense, and that the contact with the throat was unplanned and incidental.
Dest (the second American red) deffo should have walked away. But in the heart of the moment, with all the nonsense that was happening, I completely understand why he lost his head.
Once the match reaches added time, the referee may call the game complete if circumstances warrant. He judged (correctly, in my view) that the crowd's behaviour (throwing debris on the pitch, homophobic chants, etc) posed a risk to safety. The outcome was decided.
Even without the goals, that was the sharpest I've seen Pulisic in some time. He and Dest were carving that right back like a Christmas goose.

I heard the chants of "PUT0!" over the broadcast. I don't speak much Spanish at all. I believe, however, that the word is the masculine form of the Spanish word for "whore", most commonly translated as "b1tch" when applied to men.
It may not necessarily translate as universally homophobic, but the word does land that way upon the ears of native English speakers. The French and Italian translations of the word are "putain" and "putana". They are used similarly to the Spanish (I do speak French, FYI), and are definitely homophobic by implication, when directed at men.

The game was played by both teams fairly well (as to sportmanship) until about 15-minutes were left to full-time when a couple of the Mexican players saw the 2-0 score in US favor, and then the s....t hit the fan with some very nasty takedowns by the Mexican players. A couple of yellow cards came out, one for each side, but then the wheels came off the tracks for the Mexican players and they cornered a US player near their sideline and then red cards came out. From what I saw, the Mexican players became very frustrated with the game score and began trying to hurt US players.

Weston and Sergino were sent off for USA. I’m not sure of the names for mexico, but the guy who made the dirty play on Balogun and the guy who you saw Sergino get in the scrum with were also sent off on the Mexican side.
As for the third goal, it showed it. Initially it was ruled offside and VAR ruled it onside.
The highlights are choppy because the Mexican fans were chanting racial and homophobic slurs and they had to cut as much of it out as possible, so that made the highlight reel choppy. The game was called early because the Mexican fans wouldn’t stop chanting a word that is the spanish word for the F word in the english language, and the F word I’m referencing is a deragatory word for a gay man. That’s in acordance of the new CONCACAF policy. If you chant racial or homophobic slurs once it’s a verbal warning through the loud speakers. Second time is a three minute pause in play. A third time is the final whistle sounds and the game ends at whatever point it was at and with whatever scoreline it was on.
Also if you are wondering if this is new, it’s not. During USA vs mexico games there’s usually fights and brawls in the stands, there’s been instances with one set of fans urinating on and throwing bagged vomit at the other set of fans, throwing of objects including chairs, drinks, food, and other ridiculous objects from the stands…in other countries there’s been stray animals running onto the field during the game, firecrackers and gunshots around hotels where players are housed to unnerve them, all sorts of incredible violence in the stands have been reported not just at occasional USA vs mexico games but more so at other games in CONCACAF…it’s a very scrappy and rough confederation. It may have the talent of CONMEBOL or UEFA but it certainly has a bunch of the other stuff. The slurrs chanted by mexico fans during set pieces never used to be widespread and you could barely hear them, but because they are now making a big deal about it it’s relentless and the whole stadium does it just to be obnoxious and add extra stuff to the craziness that already exists.

Brenden Aaronson tried to get up from the ground to take the kick, but Luis Rodriguez basically tried to keep him down, and it looked like he was trying to gouge his eyes out. @philipmcniel4908 Год назад +2

If you watch the clock in the corner, you'll see that the Pepi goal (the 3rd goal) was shown (but called offside), but then the clock goes back a few minutes to show Pepi getting subbed on, and then it goes "back to the future" one or two clips later to show the celebration since VAR reinstated the goal.
Perhaps you've been told this already, but the ref blew the final whistle 5 minutes early because of the Mexican fans chanting a Spanish word that I'm not going to repeat, which is basically a crass word that is generally interpreted as an anti-gay slur. The problem is, FIFA is having difficulty getting that chant to stop because it's something that quite a few Mexican fans are in the habit of yelling every time the opposing goalkeeper takes a goal kick even in their own domestic league.

They also did not show a crucial no-call moment where Reyna (#7 for the US) got his nose bloodied in a pretty rough challenge by a Mexican player already on a yellow. The ref gave a foul, no card. The Mexican national team fans do some crazy stuff. At Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, they used to fill bags of pee and throw them from the upper decks to try and hit the field and US players. You always try to get seats under cover there. In retaliation some years ago, US striker Landon Donovan took a piss on the Azteca field during warm ups. Royally pissed the Mexican fans off. Mexican soccer in general plays a very physical style of game as well....downright dirty at times. They do like to move the ball, but playing really physical is a style when they get thwarted from their gameplan. Many US plays know Mexican Spanish slang and can swear just as well as the Mexicans, so it gets spicy. They do the puta chant when opposing goalkeepers do a long goal kick and CONCACAF doesn't like it, so they punish Mexican fans and the federation at times. The call the game too. Mexican fans know this and don't do it during close games or when they're winning but when they're losing or unhappy with national team play they will break it out again.

The fact that the US has taken over Mexico in terms of talent and skill...fans of El Tri have a very hard time with this. Those fans ALSO know how corrupt and broken their Federation is. The reason why you don't know many of the Mexican players is because (for the most part) the FMF (Mexican Football Federation) keeps their players either local or in the MLS. They DISCOURAGE their players from playing in Europe. Mexican football is BROKEN and their fans know it.
