I want to touch on point #2: “tightening the amp up.” In my case (using a 6505+), it’s not about tightening the gain so much, though that does play a part of gain staging as well. It’s a focusing of the low end. You can crank more bass while losing flub. If you’re doing fat chords, turn the boost off; however, when you’re playing fast chuggy parts, your options are to kill your bass by dialing it back, or keep it up and use a boost to tighten your low end.
That said, it’s always up to the ear and play style of the player. I absolutely love boosting with an OD, and an EQ at the front end would absolutely do the same job (as Dime did in his SS Randall amps). It’s also up to the amp. Engl amps already have super laser focused low ends, so it’s not necessary in the same way as with a 6505+.

I agree with that, a boost helps to make the amp more reactive. You get more saturation and it can make harmonics pop out more. I always practice without it though and then when you do use it you get even more out of it. Like training with weights on your arms and legs.

I have a DSL100h and it tightens up really nice at very high volumes most people can't play. A boost comes in handy to improve the response and being able to play at bearable volumes.
Likewise a boost is not the panacea to all of your needs or specifics, you may try:
EQ, the most overlooked pedal ever to put the balls where you need them.
A compressor, to compensate your... attack.
Overdrive to boost your guitar signal and push your amp.
Distortion to help if your amp is low/mid gain
Even a noise gate to tame unavoidable fizz, hums and elecric nuisances from analog circuits and electronics.
    TOP PICK:
Treble booster, you won't believe it until you have it. Make it fast as they're getting absurdely expensive despite the extreme simplicity of the circuit and large availability of components. Good DIY project to be honest and save $100 or more.

I agree with you with all these points that you made except for I think it’s depending on what kind of a sound you are targeting. When you mentioned about the Marshall JCM800, there’s a lot of people that play classic rock that would just plug-in a Gibson Les Paul straight in or even a Fender Stratocaster straight in and crank it and get nice tones. But if you’re looking for a heavier sounding distortion from your amplifier, you’ll be needing to boost it so *I think most of it just comes down to personal preference.* Just like the sauce on the steak. It’s not needed but it’s nice sometimes but you can always turn your game down when you boost. That’s what I do. Definitely a cool video and I like the points you made. Good video. I think it’s just a personal preference / playing style thing. Unless you’re doing fly gigs and not sure what amps you will have to use then boost/overdrive could be necessary to get a specific tone. I saw an interview with Paul Gilbert discussing his signature overdrive and he showed how he used two of them together for extra boost, I think it’s fair to say he’s a pretty tight player. It’s all about having fun with your gear, no right or wrong in my opinion. Also, not all boost / overdrives sound good on every amp either so finding the right overdrive for your amp can make a big difference. Thanks for the video !

I found that many times I don't really need a boost so much as a filter before the amp input that attenuates the guitar's low frequencies. A shelving EQ or high-pass filter that tames lower frequencies at say below 110Hz or even 82Hz had been sufficient to tighten up those Mesa rectifiers w/out having to engage a TS that does tighten up the low end but otherwise produces other tonal characteristics I'm not particularly interested in..

Exactly. Other pedals can benefit your amp just as much if not more then just using an overdrive

  • @jb_50w78
    @jb_50w78 2 года назад

Regarding the Mesa Rectifiers, the Badlander is one amp that really does not need a boost I think. That amp really addressed the whole flubby bottom end problem with the rectifiers. I’ve got a whole bunch of videos with the Badlander where I don’t use a boost and it is really tight and aggressive. I really only use a boost if I want more saturation for soloing or something, but the Badlander has enough gain and compression that it’s not necessarily needed.
And I pretty much always practice with just the guitar straight into the amp so that I focus on making my playing tighter and more precise. Really good players can plug straight into an amp and make it sound amazing. Mark Morton from Lamb of God posted some videos of his Badlander on Twitter and he played it without any boost at all and it sounded incredible.
Testament even used a Mesa Rectifier without any boost on The Gathering album and it sounds awesome.

I think an od can work with any amp BUT with the caveat that you don’t need to use is to dial in stupid levels of gain/compression. The HPF effect from most boosts/ODs will create headroom in front of the amp and change how it breaks up. If you know how to properly gain stage a guitar tone you can have a boost/od in almost any situation, even if the end result is medium gain. The problem is that most guitar players can’t dial a tone to save their life but think they can

I disagree with not needing a boost. Maybe if you're playing just open e galloped palm mutes at lower tempos you can get away with it. But when you're playing high tempos with lots of notes (think a tech death style music) and using 7 and 8 strings, you need that boost to get the clarity out of your notes at any kind of speed. Without the boost, the notes just blend in and there is no definition. You also are forgetting about getting those nasty as fuck transient sounds that you can't get without a boost pedal.
And yes, "TECHNICALLY" you can play guitar without a boost, but if it's a detriment to your sound, why the fuck would you?

Well your case is different, you have to use a boost so your 7 and 8 strings don't get farty/muddy. Needs clarity that the boost adds. I'm just talking generally here though. It's become a cool guy trendy thing that people are convincing themselves is an always on must.

I think some kind of EQ pedal in front of the amp would do the same thing. Basically you just want a high pass filter to make a 7 or 8 string less muddy by cutting out the bass.
But something like a Mesa Boogie Mark II/III/IV does the same thing already. The tone stack controls are before the preamp distortion, doing the same thing as an EQ pedal in front of the amp, and then the graphic EQ is where you actually set the amp’s overall EQ. I think with those amps you can actually get away without using a boost with a 7 string. Just listen to early Dream Theater albums where Petrucci used a Mark IIC+ with a 7 string and without a boost.

Most high gain amps don’t need a boost. Learn how to EQ your amp.

Play better (or actual) music, and you don't have to worry about chuggy, chuggy, boosty, boosts. Also, if your putting A-1 sauce non the steak, your cooking the steak wrong.
