Myung is easily the best dt lyricist in my opinion.

I love „Learning to Live“! My only complaint about it is that that last part with the guitar harmonics is too awesome to be wasted on a mere outro.

This for sure!! The side projects are great but you still have so many amazing albums to uncover. I actually think you should do Systematic Chaos next for a change. Awesome and under appreciated album IMO. If you do though, make sure to react to the first and last songs (In the Presence of Enemies) as one epic song.

Dream Theater is the definition of beauty. That Kevin Moore signature yo.I love how you react I feel the same way. That Petrucci solo at the end... and the final duet.

JM rarely writes lyrics for DT, but when he does they are usually my favorite. Also, whenever someone asks me what I think the best Dream Theater song is, 9/10 times I will say Learning to Live. It has it all. It's just a damn masterpiece from beginning to end featuring all members of the band beautifully. Truly the first real DT epic. The only "bad" thing about it is it's one of their most vocally demanding songs, hell that F# note at the climax is a classic moment for DT fans, but those days are mostly behind James. When they last played the song live, it was downtuned. Shame, but understandable.

The thing about Kevin Moore (for me) is, Kevin wasn't prone to _noodling_ , as a I call it. He mostly provided background "soundscapes" in the form of interesting chord-progressions, instead of doing unisono runs with JP's riffs. Of course, back then, JP also was less prone to just riffing. When Kevin *does* play solo leads, they're about more than just speed.
I'm not saying JR isn't as good, he certainly is better than KM from a purely technical pov. But KM is more interesting.

I think DT Thursdays would benefit by adding side projects from time to time too. It’s a good idea since it adds more variety and also helps to extend DT Thursdays over time :).

Liquid Tension Experiment is the most known one, having 3/4 of DT members (past or present) in its lineup. With the addition of the great Tony Levin of King Crimson on bass and Chapman Stick.
However, if you count Portnoy's innumerable side projects, man, that will be daunting. Mike has a Beatles cover band (Yellow Matter Custard), Rush cover band (Cygnus & the Seamonsters), his other band while in DT (Transatlantic), his bands after leaving DT (Winery Dogs, PSMS, Sons of Apollo etc.) and many more. I can't enumerate them all off the top of my head.
John Myung has a side project called The Jelly Jam, with Ty Tabor of King's X but they don't have a lot of output that I know of.
So if I had to vote, it's LTE for sure. Paradigm Shift, Universal Mind, Freedom of Speech, State of Grace and Three Minute Warning are my picks from LTE 1
LTE 2 of course, has Acid Rain (with a phenomenal Live in LA version, check it out), Another Dimension and When the Water Breaks.

Yeah like Kenneth said, LTE is a must, especially the « live 2008 from LA », outstanding performances. Acid rain + when the water breaks are my favorite ones 😊

Hey brother! Been waiting for you to get to Learning to Live for a long time, thankful you were finally able to experience it. The only problem is you are going directly into A Change of seasons so it will be quickly forgotten in the short term lol Learning to Live is one of my top Ten DT songs and it is my favorite on the Images and Words Album. It is not as heavy as Metropolis Part 1 or as commercial as Pull me under, but it is a progressive masterpiece with some great lyrics and the more you listen to it the more you will appreciate it. A comment on One other thing you mentioned. In my opinion, what I like to refer to as the "three Tremors" of Male Metal / Rock singers are (you may debate the order) Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), and Geoff Tate (Queensryche). The other two in my top five would be Ronnie James Dio (DIO, Rainbow / Sabbath), and John Oliva (Savatage). If you are not familiar with any of those guys, make it a point to familiarize yourself. You will be happy you did and have lots of new material for reactions :)
