Shane Wheatley are there wireless apple HomeKit doorbells? I know if wired logic doorbell. I’m looking for a video doorbell for my apartment. It doesn’t have a doorbell option but the only thing I can think of is ring. I only have everything apple HomeKit in my home. I know your channel is all about HomeKit but I figure you could give me recommendations because apple HomeKit doorbells are limit.. I just got level bolt. I may regret it because I’m not sure if it will use home key or not
@@davidysla2642 Unfortunately we don't have many options for native HomeKit doorbells currently. In fact, I don't think there are ANY that are wireless and support HomeKit. Many people have used HomeBridge or Hoobs to integrate other doorbells (ring, nest, etc.) into HomeKit. This is not "native" homekit but could be a good option, when there are no other options. I'll be covering this in more depth soon on the channel.
My best feature is the overall stability improvement of Homekit. Finally I would say. In iOS 14 the status of scenes was not always correct. When I ran a scene it would light-up but after a few seconds the tile was off again. So basically I never had the feeling I knew what was going on. Now this really improved.
Great video Shane. As always. An area I’m investigating is focus profiles. I noticed there’s some shortcut automations when a profile is turned on and when a profile is turned off. I’ve a meditation one set up that dims a hue light and starts the calm apps “daily calm”. Then a work one that turns on desk lamps. Limits homescreens and turns on my 8h timer. Then when turned off starts my break timer and pauses work timer. All run off nfc tags.
Thanks James! Really cool stuff. I'm also excited about the Focus modes. Still in the process of taking the time to configure them all exactly how I want. I will explore the automations a bit more with those. Thanks for sharing!
I find this video both interesting and very well made. You’ve gotten really good at this by now: nothing redundant, nothing missing. Perfect balance. Fine work, Shane. 👌🏽 Personally I’m very glad that we can now add up to 5 cameras on the 200GB plan. I have been wanting to install a 2nd camera for a long time.
My favourite feature is the airpod pro routing on the TV. I used to have to disconnect them from my phone, and then go into the TV menu to connect them - now it's pretty seamless.
My favorite (hands down) are the timers. For example to charge my iwatch (which is connected to a smart plug), I just tell Siri to turn off the smart plug in two hours, instead of leaving the iwatch charging until I remember it’s charging or I need it.
We're all just waiting for Matter to see how that unfolds. Still too early to tell, but if there is ever compatibility of any sort, it will come with Matter.

Haha yea, true. Although 15.1 is still in beta at the moment. Thanks for pointing that out though. Maybe I should make a new video just about temperature/light automations in the Home app! Can’t believe it took so long and that they are finally adding that in there.

Steve’s dream was for Apple TV to break up the monopoly of the cable tv industry and for Apple to be the primary provider of all content. However, a handful of cable providers still control the entire country, iTunes is a relic and Apple TV+ is in last place among subscription services. When Steve died Apple TV development went in an entirely different direction. HomeKit wasn’t on Jobs’ radar - it wasn’t even released until 3 years after his death. He dismissed it as too fidgety. In 2021 it’s finally refined enough to compete favorably with the other more widely adopted platforms.
I just found your channel. So far I love it. Moving into our new house soon that we are building and I wish I had found your channel before we started building to to some of my wiring a little different. I did have a question, do ring video doorbells support HomeKit? If they don’t what would you say is the second best doorbell.
Thanks Roberto and congrats on the new house! No, Ring doorbells do not support HomeKit. My top two picks for HomeKit doorbells are the Logitech Circle View Doorbell and the new Wemo Video Doorbell. I've done reviews on both here on the channel.
Some other odd things I’ve noticed with iOS 15. I used to be able to say “unlock the front door’”, but now Siri says “that is not longer supported”. I now have to say unlock the front door “lock” which is the exact name of that device. I have a “front door” open/close sensor which seems to be an issue now. Also, when I used to say “open the garage door”, Siri would respond the garage door is “open”. Right after the update it said the garage door is “opening”; the more accurate response of what was happening. And then a day later it went back to say “open“ versus “opening“ and “closed” vs “closing”. Also, I have a shortcut that needs to be spoken twice for Siri to execute. The first response is always “I’m having trouble, one sec”.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they are waiting for Matter to release. Once that happens a flood gate of devices will be able to take advantage of HomeKit and it would be silly for them to not support them.
I had to turn off the AirPod pop up suggestions on my Apple TV because it was so annoying. Constantly popping up on the screen randomly when I would close my phone or RUclips

I got problems with the update. Have a Appletv4k and 2 eve door window, and eve light switch. Now the automations don't work anymore. If I go in the home app and do the "Test automations sequences it works. But not when I actually open the door which used to trigger the light switch on and of. These are the new eve products which allows thread. But don't have a Apple TV that supports thread so it just bluetooth for now. But it used to work prefect. No after I updated the phone to iOS 15 I dosent. Any one else ??
If you want to disable the notifications on the Apple TV temporarily, are you able to simply ask Siri to turn off the Apple TV notifications, so you don’t have to go through all the settings each time? Or is there a way to control that with Siri Shortcuts?
Right now it doesn’t appear to. If you tell the Siri remote “turn off all notifications” it will jump you into the Settings app where you have to manually turn them off. That would be a great option for Siri Shortcuts, but I don’t think it’s possible at the moment.
This year Apple again added a bunch of granular camera controls to HomeKit. Expect the same next year. Not practical to expect Apple to ever duplicate every single control for every single manufacturer - that’s what the native app is best for
Really like the Apple TV camera and notifications changes. Hoped they address the issue with setting camera modes with automations in iOS 15, would love to turn of/on recording based on one person activity, not by whole family Home/Away status specially when its broken af.
Sadly ever since iOS 15 updated, now whenever I ask Siri to close or open my garage door, she asks for confirmation. she used to just do it, now when I ask she says "tap to continue or cancel" (the terminology there is weird.. tap?) and I have to then say continue before she does it :(
I was having some issues at some point with this. I think it was after updating one or more of my HomePods to iOS 15. My cameras seemed to stop recording. I’ve done a number of things trying to troubleshoot and find a solution, which I think I found. I tried restarting all my homekit hubs, which didn’t help. So after reading through some forums, I decided to unplug all of my HomePods and Apple TV’s, except for my one, primary Apple TV. With all other homekit hubs unplugged, I reset my main Apple TV. Once I did that, all my cameras started recording again. This seems to be an issue that some people have encountered, but not everyone. Not sure the cause, and it is a huge pain, but hopefully this helps lead you to a solution.
Another awesome video Shane. Not new to Apple eco, but new to HomeKit, thinking about switching from Alexa. Your videos are really helping me decide. I’m subscribed.
Great job Shane, do you know if Level Lock supports Home Keys 🔑? I believe I have 2nd generation but am unaware if firmware update is available. Thanks kindly in advance.
Can you or do you know how to output sound to the tv speakers AND a pair of AirPods paired with the tv (I’m hearing impaired)? I have a new Samsung tv with a somewhat older Apple TV 4K.
I just bought a new home and want to have the ability to control the lighting when I am home and away from home, I am not sure if I should buy smart plugs or smart bulbs. I don't have the homepod mini yet. I would like to add cameras eventually too as I live alone. Advice please.
Wiring a house for smart panels is the best option. Bulbs are great since you can mix various types and sizes. However, it can get expensive. I’m not a fan of smart plugs since they can be flaky sometimes.
Hi April, congrats on the new home! For lighting control, I prefer using smart light switches. They give you the ability to control them with your phone or Siri (when home or away) but also allow you to still use the physical switch on the wall. If you use smart bulbs for fixtures where there is a switch, you cannot use the switch anymore...it will kill the "smart" connection. My rule of thumb is: use smart switches when there is a wall switch present. For any other fixtures, such as lamps, I'll use smart bulbs or lightstrips for extra accent lighting. That's just my approach after a little trial and error.
Great video Shane. Unfortunately, package detection does not seem to work very well. I’ve gotten three Amazon deliveries since I enabled it on my logitech video doorbell and none of them were detected.
Not sure I understand the question. You want to use a monitor in a different location than the Apple TV? The Apple TV must be connected to a monitor via HDMI.
@@ShaneCreates yes I love that we get notifications and video but personally I don't like them interrupting the movie or show on the TV and thus was hoping I could have a monitor seperate to the tv entirely that would just show notifications and recording etc.
Nice video Shane! Thanks for the overview - very informative. I’m kind of surprised they didn’t update larger HomePods with features of HomePod minis. I use them as a stereo pair in my bedroom and would love to have some of the features available from HomePod minis.
I updated my Apple TV and loss the ability to make it a hub I could use my iPad but not my Apple TV I could view cameras and turn accessories at the camera but un able to make it a hub any suggestions
Hey shane, thanks for covering this. Im having issues with the application, I’ve been trying to get in the app but I’m still stuck on "Loading accessories and scenes.". Any help is appreciated
Hi Shane, my name is Steve and I’m your newest subscriber. In fact your channel inspired me to finally get RUclips Premium and this is the first channel that I have subscribed to. I am setting up our townhouse with HomeKit and your videos have been most helpful and have accelerated my learning experience. I appreciate your reviews and suggestions as well as your presentation. I look forward to seeing your next video. Thank you and keep up the good work!
No. Don't think it'll happen either since thread is really best for low power devices... I think cameras require too much power to see them run solely on thread.
Two of my Siri commands for Homekit got messed up because of the 15 update. I had scenes setup with the commands "Make it Bright" and "Make it Super Bright". Now when I try either one, Siri asks me what I want to adjust the brightness of my iPhone to...
@@ShaneCreates Yep, not the end of the world. Just a mild annoyance. But at least now I know I can have Siri change the brightness of my iPhone. Cause I really really needed that... ;) And I changed it to "Light it up!" And maybe I'll pay homage to The 5th Element and use "Aziz, Light!" for the other.
Great video Shane! I have apple tv4k 2017 model and HomePod minis on iOS 15. I am in Greece Europe where the Siri on appletv4k remote isn’t supported!! I haven’t connected the HomePod minis on appletv4k because I have a soundbar. When I say to Siri on HomePods to watch Ted lasso or raise the volume nothing happens like error!! Do I have to subscribe on tv providers or is it because Siri isn’t supported on my apple tv4k in Europe or I have to do something else to work?? Please help thank you
Thanks for watching! This should work simply with a HomePod and an Apple TV in the same HomeKit room. It could have something to do with lack of Siri support for your region. One test is to simply ask the HomePod to open an app on the tv, for example, Hey Siri, open RUclips on the TV.”
@@ShaneCreates thanks Shane. I have made an shortcut to open an app on Apple TV like Siri I think you had shown in a video 1 year ago so it works with shortcuts. But when I asked to open Amazon prime which I haven’t made a shortcut it didn’t work!! It is I the same room HomeKit!! I can turn it on or off but only this! Any other suggestion?? Can I name the Apple TV just Apple TV or should I give it a name like living room Apple TV?? In the past I tried just to leave it apple tv because I have only one but couldn’t so I named it home cinema .how can I check the firmware of HomePods mini??
I’ve upgraded but can still only add four cameras, and I’m on the 200gb plan. Anybody else getting this error? I’m in Australia if that makes an difference.
Excellent video, like always. I had not upgrade to iOS 15 because I read is creating issues in HomeKit, mainly to the automations that includes shortcuts. Any comments? Had you experienced any of these issues?
Not specifically a HomeKit question, but tvOV 15 and the 4K Apple TV was supposed to support HDMI ARC to stream audio from the tv through the Apple TV to the HomePod speakers. I haven’t seen any information about how to set this up, or even if the feature is actually available. Does anyone know if/how it works?
So if I have an extra Apple TV and a tv could I stream all the camera 24/7 and just leave it on screen? I would wall mount a tv in my hall way just for this purpose
In theory, yes, I think that should work. Although I’d test it out first. I’ve noticed the live feed going out when leaving that on the screen too long. And I haven’t really tested it for an extended period of time. They might still be working through some issues. Might want to also take a look at the HomeCam app, which is available on the AppleTV. It’s given us that capability for a long time and might even be more reliable for extended periods.
I loved my logitech camera, but unfortunately I had to return it because Xfinity Internet goes out about once a day in the middle of the night. This boots the camera off-line, and then it will not reconnect automatically. You have to be physically present to unplug and plug the camera back in.
@@JimFlanneryDRONES Now that’s intriguing! That’s definitely very helpful. I was really only interested in the cameras because I am out of town for about three months of the year. Obviously, the camera was not going to work because I could not be physically be there to plug it back in. Thanks for the tip!
Problem with HomeKit, Iso15 & Phillips hue lights. Shane, just did the up date & now I can't used shortcuts (with voice commands) with my Phillips Hue light bulbs. The plug into sockets are fine but nope with the blues. Works with voice commands in the Home app & shortcuts will work if using on screen buttons. Any thoughts or experiences ?
@@ShaneCreates Managed to find a fix. Not a name issue as nothing changed. Had to delete the hue light from the Hue app then reconnect/install it again. Now is work fine with short cuts using Siri, couple of other people have been reporting the issue, I’m in Australia if that make any difference. Interesting. Keep up with the great show !
😎 My only question is… Other than watching your videos, how does Apple promote these new features? I’ve never seen them talk about any of this. I would think they’d want to because it seems to give an increased value to their products, especially the lesser known products HomePod.
They typically share during their live Apple Events (HomePod mini was announced last year). A lot of these new features or updates were first introduced during WWDC earlier this year when they discuss all the software updates coming to iOS, iPadOS, TVOS, etc. But you are right… not a lot of marketing around HomeKit smart home
I really want to know how well two (or 3 or 4 or more?) homepod minis work for a hometheater setup, we have a projector and I hate my bose soundbar running over bluetooth because it takes so many remote control clicks every time we run the appletv and projector.
Two homepod minis can be paired as a stereo pair, but currently you can't pair more than that for true surround sound. You can airplay a bunch of homepods together, but that's not the same as surround sound. You might want to look at some sort of IR blaster to automate your projector and audio setup. None work natively in HomeKit that I know of but some do work with Siri shortcuts and some work with Homebridge.
Shane, first...for some reason I am not getting the RUclips notification of new videos from you, and yes I am subscribe and the bell is set to All. Second, I don't have AppleTV. Is it possible to have a HomePod Mini as a TV speaker without an AppleTV device? If possible, any TV?
Sometime the RUclips notifications don’t act like they are supposed to. I don’t know why or if there is anything we can do about it. Right now (and has been for a long time) my schedule is to publish new videos every Sunday at 8am EST. To answer your question, unfortunately, no you cannot pair a HomePod with a TV unless you have an Apple TV. Thanks for watching for for the support!
Shane, you inspired me. I just checked my iPhone and found it hadn't updated to iOS 15 yet. Even though I have it set to automatic. So, I went ahead and forced the update. If it messes anything up, I'll be sure to come back and whine about it. ;-)
Hey Shane great layout of the new iOS 15 updates been loving it using beta. One quick correction on the third party Siri, for that feature to work there must be a homepod in your setup to act as a relay to that third party accessory. So your existing Ecobee with Smart Voice Assistant can work with Siri if the company programs it work no new hardware is required.
Thank you for that clarification! I had assumed it would require hardware, but I forgot about it needing to relay the requests to the HomePod. Thanks for sharing!
Another updated discovered. You can now NAME your AUTOMATIONS in the Home App! Finally! Is there anything else I missed? Drop a comment!

Shane, are your cameras recording?, mine only stream no matter the setting even if set to off.
Shane, good info. Are all of the new Apple TV features available on both the 4th and 5th Gen hardware?
Most should be but I think the option to use HomePod minis as default speakers may require an Apple TV 4K.
Another awesome video Shane. Not new to Apple eco, but new to HomeKit, thinking about switching from Alexa. Your videos are really helping me decide. I’m subscribed.
Hey Mikey, thanks for subscribing!
Great job Shane, do you know if Level Lock supports Home Keys 🔑? I believe I have 2nd generation but am unaware if firmware update is available. Thanks kindly in advance.
I don't think any smart locks support Home Keys just yet.
Thanks from 🇸🇪
Great features in iOS 15 but my Automations do not work 100% as before
Does running the Eufy cams as HomeKit cameras still neuter the resolution?
Yea. Limited to 1K resolution with HomeKit Secure Video
Can you or do you know how to output sound to the tv speakers AND a pair of AirPods paired with the tv (I’m hearing impaired)? I have a new Samsung tv with a somewhat older Apple TV 4K.
Super stoked about the motion notifications! Hopefully apple will fix the logi circle 2 recording issues with ios15
Great video Shane, thank you for the updates!
Great video Shane. Unfortunately, package detection does not seem to work very well. I’ve gotten three Amazon deliveries since I enabled it on my logitech video doorbell and none of them were detected.
Yeah I haven’t gotten any package detection either. It seems to be ignoring my activity zones now too and notifying me for any motion 😒
Is there a way to use a monitor just for the notifications away from the APPLE TV ?
Thanks William! What features are you wishing was on the big homepods?
@@ShaneCreates I would love to have the tap and play on the large HomePod, i love it on my mini’s
Shame you cant connect your smart meter to these.. to measure your electricity and gas
For some reason, we still cannot use it with apple tv or for whole scenes 😔
I updated my Apple TV and loss the ability to make it a hub I could use my iPad but not my Apple TV I could view cameras and turn accessories at the camera but un able to make it a hub any suggestions
I have an August smart lock. I assume the new smart key feature will not be available with a software update but with an entirely new device?
That’s correct. I believe it will need some hardware updates.
@@ShaneCreates of course 😔
iOS 15 brought an annoying bug which would not let me snooze notifications from my Apple TV. Glad I’m on the beta since 15.1 seems to have fixed it.
Did they fix the Logitech circle view and doorbell? Or do they keep becoming unresponsive requiring a reboot?
Looking like the best option is a ring doorbell with hoobs…just curious if that allows hksv?
Love your videos man, if you don’t mind me asking where did you buy the stand for your home pod mini with the led lights?
Thanks! That's the Mission Battery Base. Full review was done here: ruclips.net/video/1OWEPx8sP5o/видео.html
Home key Question: Does that mean the existing homekit enable smart lock can't use home key yet?
Yes. Not yet
I don’t think they will add it through software because I think the actual ones are missing the NFC part
I miss my most important feature. What about using Siri offline to switch on the lights?
Hey shane, thanks for covering this. Im having issues with the application, I’ve been trying to get in the app but I’m still stuck on "Loading accessories and scenes.". Any help is appreciated
Not sure, could be a number of things. If it doesn't get any better, for troubleshooting I usually start by restarting all HomeKit Hubs.
And that's assuming you've ruled out any wifi issues.
@@ShaneCreates Yep, i tried that and it worked! Thanks shane, i appreciate it.
@@tristvno great! 👍🏻

Thanks for the support Steve! It is much appreciated! Good luck with your smart home setup!
Does home kit no longer support arlo cameras?
Arlo supports homekit. But not HomeKit Secure Video.
Are there any cameras which can use Apple Secure Video and which also have thread support?
No. Don't think it'll happen either since thread is really best for low power devices... I think cameras require too much power to see them run solely on thread.
@@ShaneCreates - Thanks!
Two of my Siri commands for Homekit got messed up because of the 15 update. I had scenes setup with the commands "Make it Bright" and "Make it Super Bright". Now when I try either one, Siri asks me what I want to adjust the brightness of my iPhone to...
That’s a pain, but sounds like just renaming them will fix that.
@@ShaneCreates Yep, not the end of the world. Just a mild annoyance. But at least now I know I can have Siri change the brightness of my iPhone. Cause I really really needed that... ;)
And I changed it to "Light it up!" And maybe I'll pay homage to The 5th Element and use "Aziz, Light!" for the other.
If the HP can implement a guard mode similar to what Alexa does, I’ll be full tilt switching
there is very annoying bug on home app _ IOS 15. When you enter settings of any accessory. you can not close window & go back. İt is freezing...
I haven’t seen that
Love your tee, Shane! BTW keep up the good work. Love your videos!
Thanks Joshua! Appreciate the support!
What is that touch screen on the wall next to the thermostat at 2:43?
It's my wall-mounted iPad: ruclips.net/video/NMZIgCG6nVE/видео.html
Excellent video, like always. I had not upgrade to iOS 15 because I read is creating issues in HomeKit, mainly to the automations that includes shortcuts. Any comments? Had you experienced any of these issues?
Haven’t noticed any issues with that so far.
Hey Thom, in case you missed the latest video: ruclips.net/video/BbQIil4wJ8o/видео.html
(Spoiler: it works) 😃
@@ShaneCreates That’s awesome! Thanks Shane! My new Apple TV will arrive this week. I can’t wait to try this feature.
Damn gonna have to buy a home key lock soon
So if I have an extra Apple TV and a tv could I stream all the camera 24/7 and just leave it on screen? I would wall mount a tv in my hall way just for this purpose
In theory, yes, I think that should work. Although I’d test it out first. I’ve noticed the live feed going out when leaving that on the screen too long. And I haven’t really tested it for an extended period of time. They might still be working through some issues. Might want to also take a look at the HomeCam app, which is available on the AppleTV. It’s given us that capability for a long time and might even be more reliable for extended periods.
Wow awesome!
I loved my logitech camera, but unfortunately I had to return it because Xfinity Internet goes out about once a day in the middle of the night. This boots the camera off-line, and then it will not reconnect automatically. You have to be physically present to unplug and plug the camera back in.
You can use a smart plug to remotely turn the power off to the camera, then back on. That's what I'm doing with my remote cameras.
Are you getting an error? Maybe it’s a naming thing if it works with the iPhone and not Siri.
@@ellesmith7815 interesting. Glad you found a fix. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Shane, how do I get Siri to let me know I have a package? FIY, I have the old Logi cameras and they finally work flawless with 15.
When you have “record specific motion” enabled in the camera settings, you can choose package detection for recording clips and notifications.
I have had nothing but PROBLEMS with all my Bluetooth devices since upgrading to iOS 15 and if I could easily go back, I would.
If it messes anything up, I'll be sure to come back and whine about it. ;-)
lol good luck my friend!
AppleTV 4k needed for HomePod mini to automatically connect. Other AppleTV devices will not work.
Thanks for the clarification.
Your video is amazing and it’s very informative.
Thanks Dustin!
