Genuine question. As your ids grow up and find themselves and all of their beliefs. Will you be okay if they chose a path that does not follow faith as strong as you have instilled into them as young kiddos?

I know you were so worried about how this would be received, but I feel the exact same way! Sometimes I also feel like “am I missing something? Or am I making the wrong choice?” But I think that’s because what we grew up with and what we see is the “traditional” school setting. So it’s nice to hear it from someone else, makes me feel like I’m not wandering down this path alone 🫶🏻

Yes to all this! We aren’t catholic but have the same options on our local Christian private schools. Hubs grew up in private school & I went to public neither of us had positive experiences, we tried a charter school for my oldest for K & 1st grade and it didn’t work out so we are officially homeschooling & I’m so excited!

I completely understand you! First off I think God has given us that gift to be able to teach our kids. Like you said it’s like were meant to do this!
My daughter was going to a Christian school for 3 yrs and it’s a nice school and involve God quite a bit but there’s also families that seem to not take the faith and salvation a little more serious. There’s still influence from those families and also families that aren’t even Christian. I’m glad they attend and one day they could accept the message but I feel like at home they’re safer and with how the world is now, imo it’s better to homeschool them. And the flexibility in homeschooling is amazing! Many also worry ab their child socializing but honestly at schools there’s also a lot of bullying. My girls will socialize at church public places and with families! This year will be my first year and I’m supper nervous but I know it’s for the best🙏🏼
You’re doing awesome Kayla and are so inspiring💗

  • @maryw1778

So what's the plan after the 6th grade? Keeping them close and coddled does not lend children to think for themselves. Had you said you disagreed with the testing/grading/philosophies of certain school districts, it would make sense. What made you turn back to religion? Not sure if you've ever shared that. Distancing from religion is often gradual and evolutionary, pun intended, but returning to faith is more often precise and unexpected.

My siblings and I went to catholic school k-12 and I’m very grateful my parents sacrificed to send us even though we could barely afford it. I did have a great faith foundation, but that was supplemented with what my parents did at home. I now send my son to catholic school but mostly due to the fact I need to work full time and the public school district here is subpar at best. I have been grappling with my faith mostly due to a lot of corruption in our diocese and the Catholic Church as an entity. I’m still happy my son will get a foundation in Christ and have Catholicism as an option for him to anchor in, but I take accountability for what he learns and practices, rather than rely on his school to do that. Just sharing my perspective. I think everyone needs to choose what is best for their family ❤️

You are making the best choice for your family. I traditionally homeschooled my oldest for 3 years (k-2) and now I’m sending my first and second to an online Catholic classical school (Kolbe Academy). It’s still considered homeschooling but with teachers so I can get some support. My local public schools are failing and the Catholic schools near me are questionable. Ultimately, they are YOUR children and we don’t do things based on how we think our children will feel about their education in the future. We do what we think is best for them. I hated going to public school. Oh well! I went anyway! My husband hated his Christian middle school because apparently it was a school where kids who were kicked out of public school went (his parents didn’t know). Oh well! He went anyway! So our children will be homeschooled/online schooled until high school and they will have to deal with it! Do what you think is best for your kids! We as Catholic parents know we would be judged by God when we die for how we raised our children. They have free will! They will decide whether or not they will follow the faith. But our actions will be judged. I care more about God’s judgement than society’s judgment. Sorry for the rant. ❤😅

Do you really need to go to church to worship God or to be practising your faith? As a kid I went to church nearly every Sunday, but I truly felt his presence while walking through nature, seeing what he has created and not in a building made by man. But I think everyone connects to God differently

If I had the choice, I would homeschool my daughter, but I can't. If you ever decide to send your kids to traditional school look into Sunset Elementary (if they are in Elementary). Its a Charter school so its free. They have International Studies programs where they are immersed in Spanish, French, or German. Depending on the age of the kids 2-3 hours is devoted to whatever language you choose. The thing about the International Study program is you learn exactly same stuff as Spainard kids, French kids, or German kids. When you graduate highschool you are able to walk into a University in Spain, Germany, or France. There's no extrance exam for you. My daughter is doing the German program and ao far its fantastic.

This happened to my husband. My in laws had him doing so much catholic based teaching, went to practice at church in yourh group, mass, cleanup, and all the extra activities where when we graduated he completely left the faith. He says it was too much, so much shoveling down his throat. As a kid he loved it, he had a solid friend group and church family, but it was too much. Now he’s regaining his faith, but no longer wants anything to do with his old friends 😔 its a balance to find for sure

My husband and I send our daughter to a Christian school. We love it there. That being said it’s very expensive so we are making a big sacrifice. We both work full time and at this time it is not doable for me to stay home and homeschool. I would love to be able to do that. It’s definitely a goal. Something I pray about a lot. We have another 2 years until my son would start school and we are praying by then we could somehow work it out so maybe I could stay home with them and homeschool. Maybe someone will see this comment and has had a similar experience or is going through this too. We both have said that if it came down to it and we could not afford to send both of them the next option would be homeschool for us. I loved hearing your thoughts on this.

As a Miami native, I can attest to everything you’ve said. Here it’s mostly a “status” thing. “Because pepita el vecina has her kids in a private school, I’m putting my kids in a private school too.” It’s all a competition. I personally know so many people who are not faith-based and just send their kids off to private school because their friends do the same. It’s the saddest thing. Plus, ridiculous given the crazy high education pricing.

It’s definitely the same here in the province I live in Canada. Public and Catholic school are both free. I definitely feel like people just pick schools depending on what school is more convenient to get to. Or sometimes high school students will go to one school over the other because one you have to wear a uniform in the other you don’t have to. I have even seen kids in the Catholic schools be exempt from certain religion classes. It’s craziness it hardly faith-based at all.

Being a public school teacher (high school) ), I can tell you that you are 100% doing what is best for your children. You do not need a Bachelors Degree or teaching license to teach your kids. The US public education has failed our children, it is a lucrative business. I get 14 year old kids who do not even know how to read properly, but they have passed the state exam, so no one cares about their life skills and comprehension abilities. Hence, I see so many identity confused kids and depressed children who at a young age have severe emotional problems.
You are doing a great job with your kids. I have two boys 4 years and 6 months, and I can tell you I will do my best to avoid public schools foe them.

It's the most confusing thing and resonates with me so much regarding the Catholic school families who aren't practicing Catholics.

Where I live, all Christian schools are super open minded, they teach about other religions, also diferent branches in Christianity. Because we have freedom of belief and schools can't dictate kids beliefs, otherwise the government wouldn't issue a lisence to be a school.
I know a lot of people who put their kids in Christian schools because usually they are private schools which means smaller number of kids in classrooms, some extra subjects that state schools don't have etc but the family is not religious at all.
But I do feel it's crazy how diferent is American way of living is compered to rest of the western world. That being said, I do get that US school system is messed up and parents try to do the best they can in that situation.
I literally thank my small little country where I can send my kids to great schools that are safe, that don't have that pressure, anxiety etc.

The primary and middle schools do focus on the faith quite a bit (one of them has a daycare/preschool).. the high school however is a university prep school for very rich people (theres only two private high schools) and its a mess, kids get bullied for not having a luxury car, drugs, private jets, the works.. they get amazing education and usually end up in ivy leagues.. they are required to pray every day, mass every week, and families do sign volunteer and participation forms, but they can get out of it with a monetary donation.. anyway would i send my kid there, if she wanted to and got a scholarship lol also they have an extreme focus on athletics.. idk 🤷‍♂️ its a great school just catholic meh

Homeschooling mom here, just wanted to share my thoughts. During my children’s formative years we focused on teaching our children about our Christian faith. We did not see value in teaching them about someone else’s religion when they were so young. During their junior high years we began to incorporate geography classes and we addressed the different religions around the world at that time. Teaching our children how to live in a diverse world is important but it’s more important to teach our children who they are in Christ and to equip them appropriately to face this very divisive world. Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

We send our kids to a catholic school and we aren't catholic because the Christian schools near us are WILDLY more expensive. Most of the parents I talk to enjoy the local public schools and they are highly regarded but I've never been a fan of the way those same kids act around the neighborhood. So why send my kids to be around them even more? But I have also seen a lot of what you're describing with the Catholic parents at the school our kids attend. They don't live out their faith and still attend church regularly. But that happens in a lot of faiths too. Life doesn't allow for us to live on a single income so it's just an unfortunate and expensive catch 22.

I went to a private church of christ school. They absolutely focused hard on teaching the bible.
Where they fell short was dealing with kids who were bullies. We had so many hardcore bullies in our school in every grade, and nothing more than making chapels talk focused on acting like christ, would happen. It very much soured my experiences with my religion.
