  • Deadwood in bonsai is a design characteristic that draws us into the aesthetic of a composition; it creates the feeling of age, drama, and represents the strife a tree experiences as it attempts to survive in the natural environment. Understand the unique qualities of deadwood for various species and methodologies we use to go about creating it in bonsai.

Just part of the process unfortunately you have to learn this way. I don't think that no one can say this hasn't happened to them when pursuing bonsai. Keep going learning and once you start to see how you can improve the health of the trees and start seeing results the more you will wanna learn and pursue it even more.

hot take, but I draw the line at using power tools to create deadwood, something about it doesn't sit with me right, sort of like using too much photoshop on a photo.

When did deadwood become a major "esthetic component" of bonsai? Was it as important in previous centuries?

any word on teleperion farms? I know they were in the range of the fire which started near elk lake. I hope everything is fine for them.

Roger The Shrubber Yes sadly I heard from one of our Face book admins that they were decimated by the fires, lost all their buildings , home everything. So sad they are such an asset to American bonsai! There is a go fund me page set up for them. Hopefully someone will get an update, and pass it on.
