  • Marie Dionne Warrick, later Warwick, was born on December 12, 1940 in East Orange, New Jersey, to Mancel Warrick and Lee Drinkard. Her mother was manager of the Drinkard Singers, and her father was a Pullman porter, chef, record promoter and CPA. Dionne was named after her aunt on her mother's side. Dionne had a sister, Delia ("Dee Dee"), who died in 2008 and a brother, Mancel Jr., who was killed in an accident in 1968 at age 21. Her parents were both African American, and she also has Native American, Brazilian and Dutch ancestry.

    She has the approach of a lamb and the howl of a wolf. No other voice out there like this she is legendary.

    Whitney’s singing and talking voice has a strong resemblance to Dionne’s 😩😩 you can tell they family

    • @chasenip2
      @chasenip2 3 года назад +9

      Oh god, yes. Whitney has always reminded me more of Dionne than Cissy. 60's Dionne was the template almost for 80's Whitney. The smiles, the hand gestures, the phrasing, they both sang 'legacy music' (music that crossed genres & withstand the erosion of time). Ms. Warwick is far too often overlooked for her powerful voice but she is every bit the vocal genius of Aretha or Barbra.

      @@chasenip2 NCW - it is so cool that you know the nuances of these fine female singers!! Don't forget Gladys Knight. And Don't forget Karen Carpenter, who was not a soprano like these others, but who can argue that "Superstar" (written by Leon Russell) was an amazing vocal performance?

    • @chasenip2

      @@RubyBandUSA omg, Gladys would definitely be there along with Aretha, Judy, Barbra , Toni Tenille, Chaka, Patti, OF COURSR Ella…& Tina…& Diana deserves her spot with those ladies. Karen was also next level, she was a way better Anne Murru…oh, and Donna & Mama Cass. Trying not to forget anyone. I miss real, REAL singers like those. No one is left today who can do that kind of singing

    Very RARE voice!! Her regular SPEAKING voice has all the natural BASS as her singing chest voice which means she barely needs to give it her all just to put on a great show. That was her masterpiece. Dionne sings pure from her gut without going overboard and it sounds so good even better than her other peers

      Her voice had matured at this point and she could no longer sing it as she had over twenty years prior. That said, she was in fine form here and made it work nicely. Dionne has always been interpretive with her vocal deliveries and avoids singing a song exactly the same way twice.

    • @kaminuasunray26
      @kaminuasunray26 5 лет назад +13

      Yes it was a hit long before Luther Vandross did it. Back in 1964. Dionne was the NUMBER#1 female vocalist in the United States that year! There's a recording of this song by Dionne. It's the best version from 1964. There's another recorded version she sings it too slow. That other version is timeless. And is hauntingly beautiful. This woman has her own style and presence!

    • @kklustra
      @kklustra 5 лет назад +8

      Ummm, Dionne Warwick made this a hit in 1964. My man, Luther recorded it MUCH later. I like his version as well. He was a huge fan of Dionne's and he recorded MANY (At least 8) of her hits.

      @@bdcsluper Absolutely correct!!! Dionne made it a hit on both R&b and Pop!! I wish people would cut their nonsense out of underating Dionne when she has been an absolute pioneer/first in music!!!

    • @singingmanmd
      @singingmanmd 4 года назад +6

      @@kklustra Absolutely and it was the other way around With all due respect, out of the 8 Luther recorded of Dionne's songs, only 1 became a hit for Luther and all 8 were major HITS for Ms. Dionne!! People need to stop their crap with diminishing Ms. Dionne's impact in music. Luther himself said she is a pioneer and I certainly agree!!!
