- This restoration project has been years in the making. We are almost to the finish line. Today we are replacing the door locks. Enjoy.

I ended up having to reuse the old retaining clips. The new ones were curved so much that, trying to slip it back in was causing so much pressure it was digging into the fiberglass. The older ones were a little flatter and slipped on much easier. Had to use very long curved pliers.

Nice video and it worked out on my 1972 LT-1. I just did not remove the water diverter/savety shield completely but tied it up with Dyneema fishing wire and ducttape so it wouldn't drop in the door.
Did the same with the new retaining pin. The old one slipped out of the pliers and will be driving around for many more years. But the locks are set so thanks!
Glad it helped - the water diverters are a good idea - but my Vette is not "all weather capable."

Yes I did, but that gasket was super thin. I installed it but I thought that it could not actually do any good.
That color is awesome!!! Brown gets a bad rap, but it’s more than just period correct/factory color, I think..

Getting that plastic bit out and back in sounds like 90% of the fiddly part. Getting ready to do same on my 79

How did you separate the door card, did the fiberglass break, and what did you use to glue it back together?
the door card is held on by four screw along the outside, two screws that hold the door handle on, and then also held on by the window crank and the door lock and handle. Once you remove all of those pieces the door card comes right off. The frame of the door is metal and the outside skin of the door is fiberglass.
@@lawdogcorvette8565 oh I'm sorry I thought you were talking about the metal door frame and the outer fiberglass skin. I thought that's what you meant when you said you had it apart during your restoration. My bad
@@pattygq no problem - my fiberglass door skins were in pretty good shape - so I left that alone. I have seen it done before on youtube. However, may times it is easier just to get an entire new door.
I think you water diverter is actually made to prevent people from using a slim jim to break into your car, It could be duel purpose to divert water, but I don't think that is its primary purpose. Also You could have easily taking the original lock to a lock smith and had a key made, then instead of taking two doors apart and installing new door locks you would have just had to have done one, and had the same result. Plus still had original equipment.
You are exactly right - this plastic piece is more of anti-thief device than protection for water getting into the lock. but is seems to do both. excellent idea on the locksmith idea. Probably should have gone that direction. Happy Vetting
The cost of locksmith is estimated at $75 for one door here in WNY. New lock is easier…
@@spikemertes6066 If you have the lock out already, and take it to a lock smith store. $25.00 maybe 20 minutes work.
Doesn't the door glass have to be removed for this?
no - the glass does not have to be removed
