I've been slugging around my eyes for a while and I like how my skin feels in the morning. I apply it before my retinol so it also helps keep the retinol away from my eyes.
It’s important to note that it is a barrier. Which means to put you moisturizer on first and then petroleum over to keep the products in place. It does not moisturize itself. Interesting that I was taught this as an esthetician but the dermatologist never mentioned it 🙃
Are you referring to the information shared in this video? The Dr. in the video is an ophthalmologist and she mentioned this very fact and that she applies moisturizer before the Vaseline. 3:54
Tutorials I have seen regarding slugging suggest you first put on your moisturizer of choice and then cover that with vaseline. The vaseline allows the moisturizer to seep deep into the skin while preventing it from evaporating.
Although I never liked Vaseline, the greasy feeling I am giving it a second opportunity and using it sparingly around the eyes. Nivea as well. Just never liked greasy creams and lotions. I'm 55 now and am looking into my options because I don't believe in wasting $50 on special creams, lotions and oils.
I used ophthalmic tears ointment several yrs in one eye for lagophthalmus which eliminated a large Pinguecula . That led to the use in both eyes which had the same result . Since the DEWS study indicated the best tears were lipid base I started using coconut oil at bedtime for even better results. Among my patients who prefer this natural product for dry eye are some ophthalmologists and their wives . As an optometrist for 47 yrs I enjoy sharing what I have learned.
I use castor oil on my face every night for other beauty reasons. As a result I use it on my eyelid. I had severe dry eye and the prescribed drops didn't really work. After I started using the castor oil it cleaned up and my dry eye hasn' come back
When I was a kid, I could not tolerate mascara, it made my lashes fall out. So i would put some vaseline on my finger, just a thin film, and use my finger tip like a mascara wand on my lashes. It made them look thicker. For my under eyes, I have used the Coq10 cream from DHC for decades. It works great for keeping the skin firm. Not sure about such a thick substance like vaseline on such thin skin.
I agree with the doctor-I love Vaseline, but I only use it on my body. When I use creams at night, specifically Vaseline, I tend to develop milia around my eyes and mouth. Unfortunately, they don’t shrink and need to be removed by my dermatologist. It’s important to know what works for your skin.

After I do warm compress, my eyes are a lot drier? Wondering what your thoughts are. 30 minutes a night, electric eye mask. MGD from accutane along time ago.
Castor oil is not recommended by dermatologists due to potential allergic reactions. Every dermatologist recommends petroleum jelly for dry skin and especially lips.
Wow, you look at least 10 years younger 😊. How do you get it off in the morning? Do you just use a regular cleanser? I'll have to try it - I'd like for my concealer to go on better. Thanks for the great advice, doc!
Years ago, I used Vaseline nightly to remove eye makeup. It never seemed to bother my eyes, but my vision was slightly blurry right after using it, which quickly went away. This video makes me consider using it again, rather than other products I have purchased. Would you recommend using Vaseline as an eye makeup remover?
Too funny! I grew up using Vaseline as an eye make up remover!! Then I heard about all the dangers of petroleum jelly, etc. etc. I am now 62 and getting wrinkles under the eyes! I am definitely starting back up with it every night! Thank you so much for the tip! I saw a make up artist, put Aquaphor lip balm under the eyes before concealer! Much smoother, looking application!
I apply it under my eyes and forehead before bed and it seems to reduce puffy eyes , but it does increase milia so if you already have it vasline will make it worse!!
Hi Dr. Thanks for this video. Just found your page. Out of topic, I have been struggling with pink & sometimes red sclera since birth. Is there a permanent solution to it? It’s not a pretty thing especially for a lady. Kindly assist, I would truly appreciate it. Thank you

Hello Dr. Wong. My makeup, eyeliner burns real bad if it gets into my eyes. Sometime when i look at my eyes its as if a piece is disappearing (kinda like an eclipse, to give you an idea). Any idea what might be happening? Could it be dry eye.?
Glad and appreciate you covering this topic. I have normal to dry skin but can develop milia so quickly with any topical cream with certain emollients. I'll proceed with caution, thanks! ❤ Dr. Rupa, please I'd like to know WHICH eyelid primer (no brand name req'd, just key INGREDIENT/S) should be avoided if you already have dry eyes, hay fever prone and can get dry, flakey lids. I love my eyeshadows and liquid liner, but have to leave my eyes makeup free for at least a week, if I do a full eyelook. I already skip mascara and don't tightline with pencils or powder, but the dry eye discomfort can be hard to take.
Thanks for this doc. So slugging should be done on top of the eye cream, right? Only once a day before bedtime? Is the Vaseline aloe vera variant also good? Thanks
Thanks for the video! I wonder if we should emphasize the importance of having a clean face and hands before applying the Vaseline around the eyes? The tubes of eye ointment emphasize not contaminating them by touching them to eyes/fingers. I imagine a tub of petroleum jelly you just stick your hands into isn't going to be very sterile.
Unless this is one more paid advertisement, why not try something natural, like Coconut Oil, Almond Oil, or Castor Oil? Any of them do wonders to the skin and don't clog the pores. Try them, and you'll be amazed. Cheers
I tried castor oil and within a week, I had little red bumps all over my face. I know it works for a lot of people but not everyone. I use Vaseline without any issues and my skin looks better in the morning.
I'm not an eye doctor, I am a licensed Medical Aesthetician. Petroleum fills pores and definitely can give you acne even if you don't have acne at all. It definitely caused the milia around this doctor's eyes and on her face; it wasn't a cleanser. Just because it's FDA approved doesn't mean it's okay to use on your skin - it's PETROLEUM. The FDA also approved birth control devices that killed women and approved every opioid prescribed to this day. They (the FDA) signed a document that said sugar is fine to consume. Sugar added to food are more likely than total sugars (natural sugars in fruit for example) to cause a spike in your blood sugar, which over time may lead to health issues like obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Artificial sweeteners are just as bad if not worse for you. What else petroleum can do to your skin: Cause molecular disruptions and contribute to chronic disease. Be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can cause skin irritation, allergies, and cancer. Trap bacteria and dead skin cells. Cause breakouts. Lead to perioral dermatitis, a red rash with whiteheads around the nose and mouth. My brother uses Petroleum on his face and doesn't listen to me. You probably won't either but this is just to inform you about what using Petroleum can do to your face and body.

This is very informative. But when I went to my ophthalmologist last month, I asked him if putting tretinoin (retinoic acid) near my eyes would cause dryness to the meibomian glands...he replied me "what's tretinoin?" Sigh. I don't supposed every ophthalmologist knows about retinoic acid, retinaldehyde, , retinol especially if they are men? So then I said retinol instead because most often people hear about retinol vs retinoic acid and he wasn't so sure but he said, sure, no problem.
Does it have to Vaseline brand only or are other 100% petroleum’s safe to use? I picked up the Walgreens brand the other day. It has no other additives, just pure petroleum. I’ve only been using it for 2 days but immediately noticed the consistency isn’t the same as Vaseline brand - Vaseline has a ‘thicker’ texture whereas the offbrand is lighter weight + more greasy. My skin still feels great in the morning tho and I think it relatively does the same thing across the board but just curious for suggestions on precautions I should look out for if using an offbrand petroleum jelly
Just use tallow, make your own moisturizer with it by dimly melting it, adding some essential oil like orange or rose, then putting it in the freezer for 10 min and finally whipping it .. can be used both on face and body.
Oh, it has a name and has gone viral? Been doing a version of it since 1980 but omg the image at 1:00 is totally gross. A "film" is enough. I mean, how are they going to put their face on the pillowcase with that amount of glop? Although I always avoided the eye area due to them getting puffy and baggy.
Have you tried slugging? Did you see improvements? If not, do you want to? 🐌🐌

Isn’t petroleum jelly dangerous to absorb in the skin? Wouldn’t castor oil be better for this?
Petroleum has molecules that cannot penetrate into the skin. It provides an occlusive barrier that prevents water loss in the skin.

I use offbrand too, walmart equate right now. I'm happy with the next day wake up effect. I haven't tested it against the name brand though.
Just use tallow, make your own moisturizer with it by dimly melting it, adding some essential oil like orange or rose, then putting it in the freezer for 10 min and finally whipping it .. can be used both on face and body.
Let's Go 47!!! Same. We look great 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🎉
Can i use vasiline such as moisturiser for under eyes ?
No it give you puffy eyes...clogg pores...its not really a moisturiser if your skin is dry rather use SBR skin repair
thankyou
Oh, it has a name and has gone viral? Been doing a version of it since 1980 but omg the image at 1:00 is totally gross. A "film" is enough. I mean, how are they going to put their face on the pillowcase with that amount of glop? Although I always avoided the eye area due to them getting puffy and baggy.
Dr talk about blurry vision
Is there anything else you could use under the eyes apart from Vaseline that would have a similar moisturing effect?
I use A+D First Aid under eyes and slug with Aquaphor.
Castor Oil works wonders
Castor oil?
I use calendula cream around my eyes.
Castor oil
Petroleum jelly contains MOAHs which are considered carcinogenic. That might be worth looking into.
Thank you for sharing!
The name brand Vaseline has been reported to be highly refined, triple purified and carcinogenic.
.0001 %. It’s not harmful. Research this, it’s been purified.
It give you puffy eyes be careful...vaseline is fake
@dhmill761 it's not purified at all
Thank you, Dr. Rupa. You answered my concerns. I started using Vaseline under the eyes last night and I was afraid getting it real close to my eyes.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
We have a fan on all night, I wake up with very dry eyes. Tonight I am going to Vaseline my face and under the eyes, I washed my face thoroughly.
Your skin is incredible. You look like you are in your 20s.
I dislike how the Vaseline makes my skin stick on the pillow case.
But who wants petroleum in their skin? I heard there’s a non petroleum brand?
Great! Can I seal Vaseline over niacinamide 😁
