  • KITPLANES magazine recently flew the SubSonex, the world's only currently available single-seat personal jet. In this video, KITPLANES editor Paul Dye talks about what it's like to fly this unique aircraft and airshow veteran Bob Carleton describes the engine and airplane development.

    Someone needs to start making a reliable small jet engine with a price tag in line with piston engines. Hopefully it will be done here in the US.

    That Jet-Glider is like a U2, and it is a two seater. I think there is a market for that.

    I only wish it had a little bit of storage space for a backpack or small "carry-on" suitcase so you could go somewhere for a weekend and have a change of clothes. I supposed you could just "stow" some personal affects in your lap.. :-)

    I am wondering about this plane's potential for general use. One of the considerations for me would be cabin heat. Another would be power for flight instruments. Deicing would probably not be an issue.

      You would probably be the only prospective candidate with microjet experience. I don't think it will help you, as this thing is very simple and has nothing in common with a Boeing. The least expensive experience you can get is being paid to fly. Tow banners, fly pipelines, join a local glider club and tow launch gliders (they usually allow free membership for tow pilots, you don't need commercial, and you can be paid a small amount for it regardless). Etc, etc.

    low cost jet ok, but... a jet engine on a slow aircraft is innefficient (poor climb performances, very high consumption for the power...)

    Looking at the specs. Of course I had to convert their numbers over to the units the rest of the aviation industry uses. 264 nm range with reserve, 208 kt cruise, 250 kt VNE. A Mooney beats it in almost every metric with the exception of cost and aerobatic ability. Why do kit plane manufacturers stubbornly cling to MPH/Statute Miles? That’s not a thing. Hasn’t been a thing since the 60’s. Only reason I see is it makes their slow airplane seem faster.

    still like all other jets, just toys for the rich.
    for the rest of us, we struggle to make a plane for under $2,000

    • @richardstone8268

      +PC5032 Planes aren't just toys for the rich! I've known pilots who've had the 9-5 jobs. What they've done is to figure out what their priorities are and organize around that. The most important is to have a good attitude and realistic goals because if you keep saying, "these are just toys for the rich!" you're setting yourself up for failure. Lastly, find a financial vehicle, whether it is to start your own business or go back to school and acquire some marketable skills. I'm a pilot, always wanted to be one and when I started I had no financial vehicle that was going to get me there quickly. I had a part time job, where I worked and saved up and then go get some lessons. I never once borrowed a penny. I ended up as an Asst. Chief Instructor at a flight academy training airline candidates. My next goal is to purchase one of those micro jets and I have my vehicle to carry it off. It's not that I'm lucky, I've worked hard, persisted and sacrificed. You need to find something that works for you and never give up.

      +Richard Stone Check out my project build, a 3 axis plane Im attempting to build for under $999. I don't have a job and probably never will. I bought this plane originally off of eBay for $38! air-war-war.org And I agree with PC, that Sonex Jet is nothing more than a toy for the super rich. It cost as much as a mansion. There are thousands of planes available for the super rich. Nobody cares about yet another plane for the super rich to buy as a toy. Now a plane for under $1000, that is something to get crazy excited about...

    • @choppergirl
      @choppergirl 8 лет назад

      Seriously, if you have something like $130,000 to blow on a toy jet plane, you should be spending that to help the poor or something. That's just obscene and like a vain crime against humanity. Your neighbors kid is like on the free school summer lunch program eating Cologne sandwiches and generic koolaid and your glass panel cockpit instruments cost more than their entire house...
