Heidelberg is nice. Also just driving around the Schönbuch forest is cool in the fall because it's a very hilly region with a mixed forest of mostly deciduous trees. It's very colorful and you get some pretty fairy tale views of little villages nestled in the forest glowing red and yellow and green with the fog flowing down the little valleys below you in the morning.

    Nice selection.
May i add: The North Sea coast. Walking to an island through the mudflats is an event you'll never forget.
Also, for those interested in motorsports: the 24 hour race at the Nuerburgring. If you want to see germans going crazy, that's a good place. Take a hike around the Ring in the late evening hours to see "the real germans" going nuts. For a start, try Hoonigans video about the race.

Hi, a very nice area in Germany is also the Bodensee and Konstanz. There are so many places around the Boensee that are really beautyfull! If you have a chance I would recommend a flight in a Zeppelin. It is a very special experiance - as it is very slow and you have an amazing view over the lake and the alpes as well as Konstanz, Mainau, Meersburg, etc... :-) Swiss, Lichtenstein and Austria are also near, so that you are able to hav a swimm in the morning a hikking mid day and a boat trip in the afternoon :-).

My personal tipps as a german:
    1. Schloss Moritzburg in saxony is very beautiful and has been the set of the traditional christmasmovie "3 Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel"
    2. Neuwerk: Neuwerk is a small island of the north coast f lower saxony and when the tide is right you can walk over there. I grew up in the region and it still always blows my mind that i have to take the boat to get back home after I walked over to Neuwerk. It is just such a unique place!

Hi, a German here who grew up in the region of Germany you are now living in... and I do have a few nice places worth a day trip which are not to far away from Düsseldorf.
There is for example Solingen Burg, approximately 30 minute drive from Düsseldorf. The castle is also a museum. Not far from there you can continue to Solingen Gräfrath where you can find the HARIBO factory store. And if you want to turn this into a round trip you can continue from there to Wuppertal Vohwinkel and take a trip on the worlds first and oldest suspension / overhead railway build in 1901.
A little less then an hour north is Xanten, the site of an old Roman settlement turned museum.

And of course the Bodensee region, or the alps and the lakes like Tegernsee, Schliersee, Chiemsee ... it all depends if you're more outdoorsy or cultural oriented. And I know Germany isn't exactly known for it's beaches but I love the north sea coasts...or Hamburg or ....so much to see. Hope the whole Corona thing is over soon.

I was stationed near Rothenburg odt. Whenever I had statesside visitors, Rothenburg odt was always 3rd on the list of places to take family/friends after Nuremberg and Wurzburg. R.odt can be extremely packed during the peak season or near empty during the off season. As far as Garmisch-P versus Berchetsgaden, I will take Berchetsgaden. Taking the electric boat to the end of the Konigsee and then walking back towards the waterfall beats just about anyplace I have ever been. Berchetsgaden to me has 3 main attractions - Eagles Nest, the Jenner and the Konigsee.

Where exactly everyone may decide for himself, but if you want to visit an old viking village, should visit Haithabu. Or St. Peter Ording is a very good place to see. You see so much of the northern German history there too 😊

If you love nice medieval old towns you should visit Marburg, with it‘s old town hall built in 1512 and it‘s castle on the top of the cities „Oberstadt“. When you start your trip to Marburg in Lahnstein at the Rhine river and follow the river Lahn, you will also pass some nice castles and palaces in Weilburg and Braunfels. And for all castle lovers Eisenach and the Wartburg is worth a visit, too. Following the A4 further you reach Weimar which is the city of Goethe and Schiller and also where the Bauhaus architecture and design school was founded.

Absolutely! I live there and it's so pretty here. But please remind that it is terribly overcrowded in summer, especially during the German Summer Break at Schools. A little advice: avoid the beach bar in Übersee. The beach in Chieming is much better and less people are there. Especially on windy days you can kite at the lake, on "normal“ days it's fun to rent a pedal boat or a SUP.

I live like 15 minutes away from Düsseldorf in Wuppertal, which may not be the most beautiful city, but there are a lot of cultural things you could experience and of course the Schwebebahn. But I think there are quite a few places nearby Düsseldorf you could visit, maybe even during Covid. If you have never been to the coasts if Nord- and Ostsee, go ahead. I specially love the islands. In the north the lakes are also extremely beautiful but of course I'd suggest the lake of Constance and the area next to it called Hegau with a couple of old volcanic mountains, each of it with the ruin of an old castle. If you ate lucky you have a spectacular view to the lake and the Alps behind.
Of course the city of Constance is worth a visit, as much as a tour in a boat to Meersburg or even Lindau in Bavaria or Bregenz in Austria. In Bregenz there is the Seebühne, where they play an opera on a platform in the water. It was shown in one of the latest James Bond films. Take your time because in this area there are alone dozens of tiny or larger villages or towns worth visiting. Friedrichshafen with the Zeppelin and Dornier-Museum or St. Gallen in Switzerland with a stunning monastery and it's famous library. And last but not least the island of the Reichenau with the UNESCO world cultural heritage churches full of art dating back more than 1000 years. From Freiburg it's about a two hours drive. In Sumner the camping areas are overcrowded, but if you get here in spring you will have the chance to drive around between millions and millions of apple trees in flower! Breathtaking. And there are not so many tourists. But get there early, as spring comes earlier in the south than in the Düsseldorf area.

A very nice area ( a bit like the Black Forest in the southwestern end ) would be the "Bavarian Forest" ( Bayrischer Wald) in the southeastern End of Germany.
In Furth im Wald they have a Dragon festival in August with performances, theatre etc.
And if you like some recommendations on really ancient and old places, here are some in my wonderful home state Hessen:
the Grube Messel, an archaelogigal paradise where tons of fossiles and stuff still is being dug out.
the Hessenpark, a literal Museum village, where many old buildings haven been brought to and restaurated and many old and ancient professions can be seen and tried out
nearby there, there is the Saalburg, an ancient Roman castel, which is about 2000 - yes thousand - years old, which can be visited. We recommend to get a guided tour through it; they do offer family tours where the kids will have some active parts, as well.
The Grube is near Darmstadt around 40-50 km south of Frankfurt, the other two are northwest of Frankfurt and a little closer - I would say 25-30km
If you are into plants or roses more specifically, visit the Bad Nauheimer or Steinfurther Rosenfest, which will take place in 2024 next time, I guess. Several world famous rose breeders are located there and they celebrate themselves and each other with a parade, open Sundays, special festivals all around the flower rose.

KALKRIESE is the place to go to find the german roots.
That is the place, mostly all germans later referred to, it is the Galipoli of the Australians and the fields of Flandres or Dieppe for Canadians.
Kalkriese is the biggest ancient battlefield where the united german tribes defeated the roman empire ... Every german child learns about Hermann, the Cherusker and his career up to the battle of Teutoburger Forrest and the free german in the north fighting for independence. 6 Legions were defeated and roughly 40.000+ died with all roman innovations the roman empire had to offer.
Why do we all know about that ?
Well, it was a big defeat and the roman emperor cried out "Varus, Varus, give me my legions back" which was covered by the historians.
the major point is that the germans had prepared a trap by using their knowledge of the area and the roman military strategy + tactics ... and therefore the romans were drawn into a swamp where they could not unfold their strength.
That swamp finally lead to a conservation of all artefacts like weapons, coins, treasures, metal tools and items and even traps of bones of horses and so on.
Kalkriese is a camper site also great for kids above 7 years cause the museum offers a kids programm about culture and art and clash of civilisations in form of exchange and trade or battle.
The battle ground had been found by whoom ?
of cause a british officer ... yes, back at the end of ColdWar Osnabrück was the biggest british garrison outside UK and Major Clunn went for archealogy surveys around Kalkriese back in 1988 ...
The Sculpture honoring Hermann had been erected on a false place 100 km away by Wilhelm the emperor 100 years earlier when the battle site was unknown.
And next to the excavation site you will find a lake called Alfsee + camping site ... Where is Kalkriese?
Basically close to the Highway A1 north of Osnabrück where the highway crosses the middle canal. 4 km eastwards and you are there, on the biggest existing ancient battlefield in europe

Do you know the Lahn Valley? Start at Limburg. Burg Eltz was on the old 500 DM note, but the Dome of Limburg was on the 1000 DM note. You can even have the view like at that note from the highway bridge (and the Autobahn is really a high way there). Limburg has also a station at the ICE track from Cologne to Frankfurt, but this station "Limburg-Süd" is way out of the city at the other side of the Autobahn. You have to take a bus to the city.
If you follow the winding river downstream (which you could also do by boat) you'll see many cloisters, churches and castles including the castle of Nassau (the King of Netherlands and the Grand Duke of Luxemburg are of House Nassau). Bad Ems was once of the most famous and exclusive spa towns in Germany, and in Lahnstein (founded in 369 by Romans) the Lahn discharges into the Rhine vis-a-vis of Castle Stolzenfels, some kilometers upriver from Koblenz.
