    Neil had his solo career going at the time, David Crosby was in The Byrds, Graham Nash was in The Hollies, and Stephen Stills was in Buffalo Springfield with Neil.

    Around the same time (approximately 1969), Jefferson Airplane performed the same song “Wooden Ships.” Both CSNY and Jefferson Airplane collaborated on the writing of this song.

    Harmonies in the group are incredible. Stephen Stills and Neil Young are both such skilled guitar players and together they create such a beautiful sound. They had been together in Buffalo Springfield which enjoyed a good degree of success also. Crosby, Stills and Paul Kantner (Jefferson Airplane) collaborated to write this beautiful song. Stephen Stills is such an outstanding blues guitar player, one of my all time favorites. This was an outstanding band. Thank you for reacting to this great song.

    This will blow your mind. Stephen Stills played most of the instruments on this song: the bass, organ, & lead guitar solo. He was the major musical talent in CSNY, along with Neil Young when he came aboard. (Both had been founding members of their first band together, *Buffalo Springfield.)* Buffalo Springfield had some great songs you'll really want to listen to, including *Rock And Roll Woman, Bluebird, & Mr. Soul*

    They were all from other bands, but hanging out and singing at Joni Mitchell’s house made them realize that there was something special to capture. I wouldn’t call them a “supergroup” per se, they were musicians who formed a band and became icons in the music world. Their songs are timeless.

  • @jeffmartin1026

    Give a listen to the version by Jefferson Airplane - they give it a different but equally beautiful treatment. Paul Kantner cowrote it with Steven and David but his name is not on the writing credits on the LP due to contract/recording label issues, not disputes among the musicians. They wrote it while sailing around on David's boat.

  • @MisterWondrous

    Neil was not yet with the band on this their first album, but it is a timeless classic even without him. A simple smile, and simply sharing what one has, can build a friendship and trust that can evolve into a civilization in time. And yes, they were a supergroup, with Nash from the Hollies, and Crosby from the Byrds, and Still and Young from Buffalo Springfield, whose profound classic "For What It's Worth" would be a good follow-up to this. It starts "There's something happening here. What it is ain't exactly clear. There's a man with a gun over there, telling me I've got to beware. I think it's time we stop, children. What's that sound? Everybody look...what's going down."

    The story I read was that Crosby and Kantner (Jefferson Airplane), personal friends were out on a Yacht and started with the Lyrics to the song and both agreed to do the song later. Stills helped write some of the lyrics and music and they both produced a cut of the song and I think David Crosby even did a recording with Kantner Check out the Jefferson Airplane Cut.

    A classic and maybe their best song musically vocally and especially lyrically about a nuclear war.David Crosby came from the Byrds, Graham Nash from The Hollies, Stills and Young from Buffalo Springfield. When they came together they were nervous about being part of a band again because of problems from where they came from. That is part of why they just went by their name.

    Great songs by CSNY would include "Teach Your Children," "Helpless," "Déjà Vu," and "Long Time Gone." They all had terrific solo albums. Crosby & Nash did a few together. Nash has solo songs like "I Use To Be A King" and: Simple Man" that are beautiful. But his best
    song is one of the most beautifully written songs, "Lady Of The Islands (I think it is on Crosby Still and Nash's album).

    Really glad to see your appreciation for CSN!!! As a little boy I grew up with The Beatles, but remember when I heard CSNY on the radio for the first time in 1970 my immediate reaction was "wow, who is that"?!!!! I got my mom to buy me their album, Deja Vu, immediately. What a masterpiece!!! If you liked "Wooden Ships", I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "Carry On", and "Woodstock" (written by Joni Mitchell). But that entire Deja Vu album is amazing. Again, really enjoyed your reaction!!

    This is the story of some people after a nuclear holocaust. the planet is devestated. Watch the movie "On The Beach" to get an idea of what that might be like. The anguish hidden in the beauty of this song is stunning. Listen to the lyrics and hear them trying to survive, to have enough to eat, to find a safe place to live.

    Down by the River is another great song that you will get the full capability of CSN&Y. "Down by the River" is a song composed by Neil Young It was first released on his 1969 album with Crazy Horse. Neil Young joined Crosby, Stills, and Nash in 1969 and they started playing Neil's song "Down by the River."

    The album you are using is a semi-greatest hits release. A lot of the posters below are wrong - Neil Young only sings on the tracks included from "Deja Vu". The rest (including this one) were from their debut album, "Crosby, Stills, And Nash" (without Young). Young was only a member for "Deja Vu", and touring. He didn't perform on another one for years, due to the internal friction between him and Stills (and later Nash) and was in and out for decades. Incidentally, "Wooden Ships" was co-written by Nash/Stills and Paul Kantner from "Jefferson Airplane" (Who also recorded it for an album of theirs - "Volunteers", with slightly altered lyrics).

  • @rk41gator
    @rk41gator 11 месяцев назад

    For me this song is about any war, not just an apocalypse. The Vietnam War was very influential at this time. So to me this story is about two men from each 'side' meeting and rather than fight realize they have more in common (their humanity) than differences. "a warm wind over my shoulder, guess I'll set my course and go" seems to me they are deserting. That would NOT be a popular subject back at that time, so the band never stated that as their subject. But to me it is obvious. The only way to stop war is to stop fighting and realize our humanity.
