Reminds me of all the fun I had as a Blue Suiter refusing to use full rank when talking to a Marine, "Yeah, I have a lot of work to do. Do you want a heater to your tent or not?
When I was in high school, I was in the N.J.R.O.T.C.(Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps), our instructors were a Captain (who happened to be a Chaplain) and a Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sergeant. These two men taught the course in two ways. The Captain gave lectures and discussed the chapters in our Naval Science textbook. The Master Gunnery Sergeant supervised drill practice and rifle squad. The Master Gunnery Sergeant told us many stories about his experiences in Korea and in Vietnam. The Captain also told some stories. Both were retired from active service but, the Master Gunnery Sergeant was later promoted to Captain before he passed away.
@@SFMF247 Thanks. I couldn’t join the military because I had scoliosis. If I didn’t have it, I’d be in the Air Force (I tried to join after I graduated. But I couldn’t. Thank you for your service.
I've always been wondering about that ever since I first had to learn all of the branches' ranks and rates back in highschool jrotc, nowadays I'm about to enlist in the Army, heading to MEPS soon and then to boot after that, quite excited!
Wingers love Master Guns, because they are wingers, on an Air Station. SgtMaj's mostly don't like wingers and we shared that feeling, because most were grunts.
You might want to add that process starts at Master Sgt and first Sgt first Sgt goes to Sgt Maj and master Sgt goes to Master gunnery sgt! SEMPRE FI. Sgt ,"E" U S. M. C. And your m. o. s. plays a part!
I was 8152 security forces from 2011-2015, and I think I saw a master guns once for about 30 seconds. They were almost mythical in my company. I was in Yorktown VA at the naval base. Rah Sgt Major
You gonna say my daggone diddy right now! You understand that? YES SIR! Master Gunnery Sergeant in the Marine Corps!!!!!!! I can still hear Senior saying it just as plain as day.
I've seen some SgtMaj's with city miles on them. Stressed about the shit we did as LCpl.'s & Cpl.'s on the regular. Never seen a Master Gunns who didn't look like he just got off vacation. Seemed kinda nice.
The difference is that a Master Gunnery Sergeant does his job, KNOWING he knows more than anyone else in his field and the Sergeant Major does his job TELLING you he knows more than anyone else in his field.
My grandfather was a MSgt in USMC and deployed to the Pacific on the USS Midway during WWII and fought all the way up to Okinawa then went to Korea in the 1950s. While he didn’t have an exploding bomb on his patch, I wouldn’t have dared made a pineapple reference to him if he did have one. All my letters I’d write to him as a kid in the late 1980s were addressed to him by his rank, first and foremost. He took life seriously and you didn’t want to cross him. Everything was about respect and doing the best you could so, and if you didn’t, you did it again until it was perfect. Sure he could be kind, but he was definitely born hard.
Had a heated discussion with my Marine Corp Sergeant Major when assigned to MNSTC-I during my deployment to Iraq 2006 - 2007. He said that me and my other Army CSMs needed to be converted to Sergeants Majors while in country. When asked why, he said the Marines didn’t have CSMs. To which I explained to him more than once, that he held the equivalent rank and the Master Gunnery Sergeant was the equivalent of the Army Sergeant Major. I also told him that my older brother was a Marine and that I knew the MC Hymn long before I learned the Army Song. And that if I had wanted to be a Marine, I would have joined the Corp. All of my CSMs, to include myself, were the senior advisors to our commanders. In my case, I was the command sergeant major to the brigadier general in command of CMATT. In the multi national, multi compo MNSTC-I command, the Marine Sergeant Major never got it. 3/4s of the Command were Army Soldiers. We never relinquished our wreaths and when LTG Dempsey’s replacement came in, he brought his own CSM with him from the states. For the duration of that command no other Marine filled that billet.
Air Force here... from what I'm seeing from his description is a comparison we make with our CMSgt's in the Air Force. "The difference in a Chief and an E-9 is a Chief takes care of his people and gets shit done, an E-9 takes care of himself". SgtMaj is that E-9, MGySgt is that Chief. I could be wrong, just an observation.
I’m remember we had this old salty SGT Major who was a Vietnam Vet. He had a bad hip and used to run with us with his cane. Was eventually forced to retire due to his medical issues. We hated that guy pretty much ran the company. Every officer was scared to question him. He wanted everything squared away even required spitshine on your combat boots. We purposely would run as fast as we could to try to break him. But he kept running. That man was the real Gunny Highway.

Great story, Gary… thanks for sharing brother.
Urah,

@@SFMF247 Thanks. I couldn’t join the military because I had scoliosis. If I didn’t have it, I’d be in the Air Force (I tried to join after I graduated. But I couldn’t. Thank you for your service.
This man looks like every 1st Sgt. Dude makes my blood pressure go up and my back straighten out lol
I had not noticed that they had 4 rockers for their E-9. Thank you
Urah! Marines are extreme… 👊🏼!

Wait-
So you’re telling me, the Marines at MCAS did NOT like their SgtMaj?!
OHHH SAY IT ISNT SO!💔
Semper Fi My Friend. Get some
You might want to add that process starts at Master Sgt and first Sgt first Sgt goes to Sgt Maj and master Sgt goes to Master gunnery sgt! SEMPRE FI. Sgt
,"E" U
S. M. C. And your m. o. s. plays a part!
The photo at the end was MGysgt Buss passing the colors from Col Holt to Col Palma. Felt like it was all just yeaterday
Are there any instances where a MGySGT is moved or promoted to SgtMaj?
Sergeant Majors specialize in grilling junior Marines for mustaches and hands in pockets 😂
Pure Excellence, nothing else
I was 8152 security forces from 2011-2015, and I think I saw a master guns once for about 30 seconds. They were almost mythical in my company. I was in Yorktown VA at the naval base. Rah Sgt Major
That shirt 🔥 where can I find one? SF
You gonna say my daggone diddy right now! You understand that?
YES SIR!
Master Gunnery Sergeant in the Marine Corps!!!!!!!

Truth.
URAH! “…born hard”!
Your father is part of the storied history and tradition of our beloved corps. May he Rest In POWER.

“Master Sar’nt” hahahahhaha
@AutomaticWriting - Thanks for adding to the comments. I’m working on it, I swear, I am! 😜

Exactly right. Ooh Rah, Semper Fi to all Devil Dogs
Amen gongfinger! Semper Fi My Friend!

Their personalities tend to be just....slightly different as well. Respected the advice that both gave.

Master Guns is always the coolest dude in the Corps “why don’t climb my rockers and say that again, sir”
😎
I thought it was a pineapple 🍍
Air Force here... from what I'm seeing from his description is a comparison we make with our CMSgt's in the Air Force. "The difference in a Chief and an E-9 is a Chief takes care of his people and gets shit done, an E-9 takes care of himself". SgtMaj is that E-9, MGySgt is that Chief. I could be wrong, just an observation.
😂 Thx for the comment!
Were u get that shirt?
I’m remember we had this old salty SGT Major who was a Vietnam Vet. He had a bad hip and used to run with us with his cane. Was eventually forced to retire due to his medical issues. We hated that guy pretty much ran the company. Every officer was scared to question him. He wanted everything squared away even required spitshine on your combat boots. We purposely would run as fast as we could to try to break him. But he kept running. That man was the real Gunny Highway.
thanks motivator
You were my heavy in boot camp! Platoon 1011 Bravo company. Staff Sgt Edwards, Sgt Cece, Sgt Barrett, Staff Sgt Rangel. Semper Fi!! - Schilder
