Having the same problem with my 2018 regal. Dealership said $1,600 to replace both rear knuckles! Watching your video makes me want to tackle this with my friend to help. Great video thanks for the info
If I were you, I'd definitely tackle it. It's fairly easy. The parts although OEM, are very inexpensive. I can send you the links to the parts. You could save a ton and have it done within a few hours. Thank you so much for watching.
I have same problem with my 2021 Malibu with only 40k miles on it… I thought it was shock absorbers and wanted to replace them. Thank you for this video, you saved me money for not replacing shocks absorbers.
hallelujah, i found the fix for my car. been having issues with it for 2 years. and just now finally found a video. wish it was a recall, so troublesome
It should have definitely been a recall however, GM knew the car dealer repair shops would have been flooded with these cars because of the flaw in that knuckle bushing. Thank you SO much for watching!
You did a good job explaining this procedure. Thank man. I’ve started hearing clunks in the rear and this could be it, going to jack up my car tomorrow and check some bushings.
@@TerenceDIYI have a 2007 with 90k miles, the rear looks to be the same setup though. The car sat for a while so everything rubber is badly deteriorated. I just looked at the rear and just about every part looks like it could be causing the noise. I had to replace everything for the front end…
Oh, you have one of the earlier years. I can believe that those bushing were dry rotted especially after sitting up despite the low mileage. The setup you have may look similar but it's a totally different design. Your setup went from 04-12.
Man I thank you bro. I can now fix my wife’s car for much less than what the dealer quoted me, $1400 for both rear knuckles 😬… Gonna get the parts ordered tonight with Amazon Prime and I’ll have them both installed by Saturday night. Thanks brother, enjoy your evening 😎 🫡
I have a 2018 doing the same thing. Really hear it when I’m back up and pulling up real slow. Very detailed video. Think I can fix it myself. Thank you.
Thank you for the advice. It was spot on. Just replaced both of my rear knuckles 2018 malibu and it runs smooth and silent now. Saved so much time for guessing the problem.
After watching this video I felt ready to tackle the job. I followed step by step and it went exactly as you showed. Thank you so very much for sharing your experience! It went so well in fact that I kept going over to make sure I didn’t miss anything! You are an awesome teacher, can’t thank you enough! You now have a loyal follower.
Thank you for such an amazing video, this was a life saver. Was able to knock this out with my dad yesterday. Took about 5 hours, but we got new pads rotors and wheel bearings as well. Very helpful and saved me lots of labor costs
Well done video sir. Just completed a replacement of both knuckles on my 2017 Malibu using your video and the sound has vanished. Next I have to tackle the shift to park issue. You have earned another sub!
Thank you so much for the great content! I was about to do the hub/bearing assembly on my girls malibu but she has also had the clunk clunk issue that I had read on the forums was a knuckle most likely. I'm guessing the failed knuckle bushing may have contributed to the bearing failing. Now that I saw your video I'm definitely gonna swap the knuckles when I do those hubs since it all right there anyways. Thanks again for taking your time to share your methods for the r&r on this common failure point of these Malibu's!
How many tons were each of your jackstand again thanks for your help. You are the one of the most detailed videos I watched. Definitely will recommend all your videos to people.
For this job I used some 2 ton jack stand in which was more than enough. Although I have many jack stands, my brother recommended the ones I am using in the video for smaller jobs and to carry in my truck. I also bought a set of these for my other truck (link below). www.amazon.com/Tool-International-KTI61201-Jack-Stand/dp/B071JBPTKC/ref=sr_1_9?crid=3PYEJZS4HQ9LW&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.vJnirDDKZVkTz4MKH6LHxr_xJu2qqcyGr2wXAy1cSlIM91bwwe8W75Vto3J-dVtpSJ8cVjlrON7WNOdYo51stCE8FNn4uG7FWJWWZXsJH9a4xtmjDx2N-xe1f_4pVpZCVlW3sMjFnGi5LoCH5X6EW6LBneFsTD0-ZCEJftTZA9ldIxLWB0JIu9QCKXZvQRbh0CuQmfVUmOhj_kw2dn-LAhiUa25WaAwawIjg5Tft6p3Fk7DYvn3G5T9ASqMRMGZZ81wKH5zjL7FiN9lo1S9Pkwh74d77yXgyAtfp7PmiWd0.CvB9skLM3dNYWQaYXGavqgYSoMhu8_n7YmJa9S-LGSE&dib_tag=se&keywords=2%2Bton%2Bjack%2Bstands&qid=1708558361&sprefix=2%2Bton%2Bjack%2Bstands%2Caps%2C190&sr=8-9&th=1
LOL! You got all the tools I wish I had. Enjoy that DCF900! I’m still rockin’ the old 899 and waiting for a deal on one of the ratchets… probably going for the DCF510 sealed head ratchet.
I just purchased a 2018 Chevy Malibu and I'm having the same exact noise in the back on both sides I can move forward I hear it I can move backwards I hear it I can barely hit a bump I hear it I can turn a certain way I hear it I can go up a little like heal I hear it so I was just wanted to know what it was but when I took it to my dealer ship they act like they don't want to really fix it so I don't know what's going on I have to figure it out myself I guess but this video did help out a lot
This video shows EXACTLY what is wrong with your car. It's a very common issue with these vehicles and should have been recalled. Thank you soooo much for watching.
You are my hero. I'm not a DIY mechanic but after watching your video I think I can do this. Thanks for the an amazing tutorial. If possible, could you share the tools you were using? Going to need some new toys. 😂

Where do you place the jack on the Malibu to put it on stands? Everything I can find says jack it up at the indentations but how does that work if that's where you're putting the stands? You said any questions. 😂
Going to actually replace both knuckles and both shocks at the same time. Smart to pull the shocks off first and leave them off while working on the knuckles to give me more room? Thanks for all you do.
I would do one side at a time (shock and knuckle). That allows you to be in rhythm when replacing the opposite side. It just makes things flow easily and consistently to do it that way, in my opinion. I have a detailed video of the shock replacement as well. Thank YOU for watching.
Great video! Always very detailed.🙂 So I do want to ask, between the shock absorbers & the knuckles, which should I replace? Is it the hub making the clunk or the housing on top of the shock absorbers? Thanks!

They are fine if you need a part on the spot. I haven't bought major parts from them or Autozone in many years now. I have quite a few outlets that I get my parts from at a fraction of the cost within days shipped to my house.
I don't believe the tire rotation messed anything up. However, it may have exploited the issue in which was bound to happen. This issue is very common with these vehicles. Thank you so much for watching.
I have a 2018 malibu LS and i get that clunking noise too but its not consistent like its almost like when the car has been driven for a bit then the noise goes away so i was thinking maybe one or more of the exhaust hangers are worn but now that ive seen this i might just replace the knuckles. The car has 76k miles
I am 90 percent positive that it's the knuckles. It's a VERY common issue with these cars and should have been recalled. Thank you SOO much for watching.
I also have a 2018 Malibu and I have a problem, when i drive on a flaw road it sounds like a sharp knock in the back, is it the same problem that you had? I have taken it to several mechanics and they all say that the suspension is fine (sorry for my english i’m latin)

There should be a recall on this. Mines been doing it for a while but it's getting worse. I'm just being lazy. Trying to see if I can cheat a little and just try to get some grease in there.
I totally agree about the recall. The grease will not help unfortunately. If it does, it will be short lived. Pretty easy fix and the parts are inexpensive. Thanks for watching.
I am not a mechanic but I would have like to have seen a description of the tools used so I could purchase them. Also I am having difficulties finding the newer knuckle. Could you recommend where to buy them and how to make sure you have the correct ones? ❤
I apologize for not placing the tools used in the description box. However, I did show every single tool required to complete the job. I wish I would've seen this video and how common a problem this is for malibu's BEFORE I just bought a 2017 LT that has this very issue like everyone else.
Do you know if Chevy sells just the bushings? I have access to a press. Trying to save a few dollars, who knows the bushing might be as much as the full assembly.

Hi, I show every tool in detail what I am using and exactly how I am using it in the video. I made sure this how-to-video was extremely detailed and not leave out anything.
I have detailed videos on the shocks and this one for the knuckles. From the vehicles that I have worked on regarding this issue, it was never the shocks. It was always the knuckles. It's a bad design. The bushings wear faster than normal. The aftermarket ones are somewhat better. Here is a link for them just in case you decide to change them. Is there a relatively cheap impact drill and electric wratchet wrench you would recommend? Im trying to get my list of tools together and im unsure what would be the most appropriate. Thanks man! I appreciate you putting this video together. Update: I can't seem to find a site for the rear knuckles. The only one I found is basically cheap quality. Can you help?
The links are in the description for both OEM parts at a discounted rate. As far as decent affordable impacts and ratchets, Harbor Frieght "Bauer" brand is decent and they "Hercules" are nice. Both being affordable. Let me know if you need anymore help. Thanks for watching.
I could be wrong but the link appears to be for steering knuckles instead of rear suspension knuckles. I managed to find the rear suspension knuckles through that site but they're out of stock. The only ones I could find were OEM and were $260 for the pair. Also, thanks for the advice! I'll go to HF in the AM

Why are yall going to the dealer to get stuff fixed that's why they charging you 1500 to do it you don't go to a dealer unless you have a warranty and even then you gotta be carful not to get screwed
Although the bushing looks to be intact, they are the culprit for the clunk. Poor design by GM. That's why the newer ones has better bushings. Thanks for watching.
@@TerenceDIY I actually just worked on mine today. The bushings felt good, firm but smooth. I pulled the boots back and shot some white lithium grease in the joint and the noise is gone, at least for now, time will tell. It was the drivers side causing the problem on mine but did both sides
Sorta but not as loud. Can you hear the noise as soon as you drive off? How about if your driving slow or at the speed limit down a SMOOTH road? Those are the tell tale signs of those rear knuckle bushings being bad.
@@TerenceDIY I can sometimes hear it when driving but mostly when like stopped or letting off brake and starting or coming to I stop I hear it. It's no loud but noticeable.

I live in cook county IL, I have a 2016 Chevy Malibu and I just replaced the rear shocks like how you explained in a different video. By any chance would you be able to help me out with this in the near future? I believe I have the exact same problem. Thanks
Okay, I know where you are. My big brother is an airplane mechanic fror O'hare airport and you're in that vicinity. I'll see if I can fit you in soon. What exactly would you want me to do? Make the repair? Thanks,
To be honest, if I wasn't filming such a detailed video, this would have been a two hour job MAX for me. An hour on each side. It's a fairly easy job. Thanks for watching.
Does the sound happen when accelerating? I recently replaced my passenger cv axel I checked the drivers side but seemed good so I didn’t replace. I still have a popping sound when I accelerate but not often only once in a while.
Yes, it's a complete part as in the video. GM made the newer part more reliable. If you need the link to the parts, they are right above this comment (a viewer asked for them). Thanks,

I just sent you links to both (driver and passenger)

You did a good job explaining this procedure. Thank man. I’ve started hearing clunks in the rear and this could be it, going to jack up my car tomorrow and check some bushings.
It's hard to visibly see the worn bushing however, this is the culprit 90 percent of the time with these vehicles Thank you very much for watching.
You're very welcome. It's a pretty straightforward job. You'll knock it out in no time. Thanks for watching my content.
I have a 2018 doing the same thing. Really hear it when I’m back up and pulling up real slow. Very detailed video. Think I can fix it myself. Thank you.
You ABSOLUETLY can fix it yourself! Thank YOU so much for watching. I really appreciate it.
Thank you for the advice. It was spot on. Just replaced both of my rear knuckles 2018 malibu and it runs smooth and silent now. Saved so much time for guessing the problem.
That's awesome! I am glad my video helped you get it fixed. Thank you for watching.

Excellent presentation of how to do that.
Thank you so much and thanks for watching.
Thank you for such an amazing video, this was a life saver. Was able to knock this out with my dad yesterday. Took about 5 hours, but we got new pads rotors and wheel bearings as well. Very helpful and saved me lots of labor costs
You're very welcome. I am glad my video helped you guys. Thank you SOOOO much for watching my content.
Well done video sir. Just completed a replacement of both knuckles on my 2017 Malibu using your video and the sound has vanished. Next I have to tackle the shift to park issue. You have earned another sub!
Thank you SOOOO much for watching my content and subscribing to my channel. I really appreciate it.
The shift to park is a real simple to fix.
Wait till you get the 3rd brake light leak, im on #3 😭
Thank you so much for the great content!
You're very welcome. Thank you soooo much for watching.Good luck with your fixes!
The hub bearing failure is independent of the knuckle bushing noise.
Very well done. Appreciated suggestions of leaving bolts in place and you showed technique with purpose.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching.

What happens if you don't change them out? I can't afford it. Is it a safety issue?
Absolutely nothing. The noise would just become an annoyance.
@TerenceDIY thank you! It already is an annoyance, but I'll tale that over 1400 bucks!

A 21mm socket and wrench will work better than a 13/16” if you have them. Good video.
I tried both and they are identical. I have EVERY socket known. Lol. Thank you SO much for watching.
Actually they are not identical a 21mm is slightly larger the bolts are in fact metric there are no standard bolts on that car.

@@TerenceDIY you are the man. Thanks again. I plan to attempt this over the summer. I might have questions. 😂
Ask as many questions as you like. It's a fairly easy job.
Where do you place the jack on the Malibu to put it on stands? Everything I can find says jack it up at the indentations but how does that work if that's where you're putting the stands?
You said any questions. 😂
I show exactly where to place the jack starting at the 1:20 mark.
@@TerenceDIY Thank you, sir for what you do. What you mentioned is my plan of attack.

Great video! Always very detailed.🙂 So I do want to ask, between the shock absorbers & the knuckles, which should I replace? Is it the hub making the clunk or the housing on top of the shock absorbers? Thanks!

i just rotated my tires. Now i’m hearing that clanking in the back drivers side. You think. could’ve messed something up rotating the tires?
I don't believe the tire rotation messed anything up. However, it may have exploited the issue in which was bound to happen. This issue is very common with these vehicles. Thank you so much for watching.
tks bro !!!👌👍

I can't seem to find a site for the rear knuckles.
You are correct! They sent me the wrong links. I should have clicked on them before adding them to the description box. Everyone is on backorder for them. I was able to find these links.

@@TerenceDIY appreciate it!
No problem.
Why are yall going to the dealer to get stuff fixed that's why they charging you 1500 to do it you don't go to a dealer unless you have a warranty and even then you gotta be carful not to get screwed
Do u live near NY, cause u can do my car, I have this problem as well, you seem to know what you're doing. 👍👍👍
I wish I could help. I'm in Chicago, Illinois.
@@TerenceDIY ty man the dealership here in NY wants 2200 to replace both parts.
I have the links to the actual OEM parts in the description box.
@@TerenceDIYwhere are you located and how much
I am in Chicago.
I have a 2017 chevrolet malibu i have replace the knuckles 2 times and have to replace them for the 3rd time
Are you buying the GM OEM ones? Of the aftermarket ones?n I installed the GM OEM on this vehicle.
@@TerenceDIY I got mine from partsgeek
What exactly is causing the clunk? That bushing didn’t look that bad
That's great!
For me was. My brake pads only reversing
My rear struts kinda sound like a ball joint clunk or pop occasionally. . Is that what this is causing?
Definitely a clunking sound even if you're driving over a smooth surface at low speeds.
@@TerenceDIY I mean do you think it sounded like ball joint would sound just in the rear? That's what I'm hearing
Sounds about right especially since it's such a common issue. VERY common.
Sucks they are on backorder been dealing with the noise but my mom drives the car now more and is concerned since it does sound like it gets worse
I sent you links for a decent price.
I have done this to my Chevy Malibu 2016 but the problem came up again 8 months later on the rear right side 😢
Did you use the OEM/GM brand? Or aftermarket?
Is it problematic or just unpleasant?
Not probelmatic just will become annoying.
@TerenceDIY asking cause I gotta replace my fuel pump, and I don't even have the money for that. Lol ty
Well, here are links for both quality parts cheap when you are able to afford them.

If you don’t mind me asking … where are you located?
Chicago, Illinois.
I live in cook county IL, I have a 2016 Chevy Malibu and I just replaced the rear shocks like how you explained in a different video. By any chance would you be able to help me out with this in the near future? I believe I have the exact same problem. Thanks
Hi, if I were to help, it would be a while from now. I have about five major jobs in front of me. I would love to help though. Fairly easy job to me.
@@TerenceDIY thanks for getting back to me! & I understand you’re busy! If by any chance you have a free day let me know. Appreciate the video
What city are you located in?
@@TerenceDIY Mount Prospect. Not too far from Chicago
Okay, I know where you are. My big brother is an airplane mechanic fror O'hare airport and you're in that vicinity. I'll see if I can fit you in soon. What exactly would you want me to do? Make the repair? Thanks,
How many hours did this take man? Ive worked on my own vehicles my whole life but time depends if ill work on it myself anymore lol.
To be honest, if I wasn't filming such a detailed video, this would have been a two hour job MAX for me. An hour on each side. It's a fairly easy job. Thanks for watching.
Rust belt mechanics do not put the torque bolt on because they don’t come back off with the rust
Hi
How much for you just to do this for me 😂
Lol. Where are you located? I'm in Chicago.
What did the noise sound like
A clunk sort of similar to as if something was rolling side to side in your trunk hitting up against things.
@@TerenceDIY So that answers what my question was/is. Does noise sound like something is rolling around in the trunk? Thanks!
Yes Scott! That sense of something rolling around in the trunk, when it wasn't, was driving the owner crazy! Lol.
Does the sound happen when accelerating? I recently replaced my passenger cv axel I checked the drivers side but seemed good so I didn’t replace. I still have a popping sound when I accelerate but not often only once in a while.
Yes, it happens upon acceleration as well. This is a VERY common issue with these vehicles. Thanks for watching.
Good Evening…could you please tell me where you bought those parts?
Does the part comes with the bushing as well ?
Yes, it's a complete part as in the video. GM made the newer part more reliable. If you need the link to the parts, they are right above this comment (a viewer asked for them). Thanks,
These looks like front knuckles? Or am I mistaken here and they are for the rear wheels?@@TerenceDIY
They were. The parts were replaced. I deleted those links. Sorry about that.
