3M Blenderm medical tape for fixing EPO hinges. Fast and effective. Very reliable. Hard to see from more than a couple of metres away. And can be used to reinforce new foam hinges before they even get broken.
I like Blenderm tape too. But I found that the foamtac or other quality adhesives really do a great job, and don't have that unsightly look that blenderm can have on certain painted surfaces.. Don't get me wrong.. I use the heck out of blenderm...
Thanks for the good hints. This is one of the fixes I have tried. Not sure why, but I have had hinges fixed with Foam Tac wear out again and let loose.
Wow. I’ve never had the just fail. Had the tear a little, but not out right fail. I may do a hinge abuse test and see what’s the best system for strength and looks good
Thanks. I might try hunting up some 'Welders' and try that. ( I like the idea of fixing the hinge back much like it was when new. ) I'm not sure how good a fix I had using the Foam Tac. I may have had some parts of the hinge area that did not have enough glue to be effective. Anyway, I subsequently trimmed up the hinge area so it was pretty clean and then put in some traditional metal pin hinges which are still functional.
Nice info good review I also add the wing tape too after I had a rudder come off glue and wing tape back up since I had it come off in flight 😨😰✈🛩🛫🛬🪂👍👍👍
Thanks for the tips! I enjoy your informative content. I was wondering though, could you use a couple small nylon hinges to make it a more permanent fix?
Rich, yes the nylon or CA hinges would be a great solution and last a while longer than this solution. That said, I've found this glued hinge works very well on planes that are a little less likely to rip off a control surface.. (Slower, more docile flyers).
I lime foam tac it seems more flexible than welders. But mine hardened in the bottle before I could use it a second time. Guess I need to crash more often
I like your enthusiasm for using quality adhesives. That’s the bummer for Foamtac. It gets kinda gummy very fast. Uhu Por and Foam2Foam aren’t as good, but stay liquidy longer.
Its hard to beat. Only issue I have with it, is it will gum up and doesn't flow as well as some other contact cements like Foam2Foam, UHU POR, or welders. I haven't tried E6000 on the hinge, but I might.
Great video, I actually prefer the Welders over Foam Tack. It's been hard to find Welders recently. An old supplier said that the shipping from Europe has skyrocketed, forcing many to disscontinue it. Do you know of a current supplier with normal prices.
I hadn't used Welders until the test and now I use it on several repairs and builds. I still use FoamTac on EPS plane though.. Interesting you mention its hard to get. I purchased mine from Amazon. I just checked and I can't find it there anymore.
I'm thinking it's from England. Shipping prices have forced most to discontinue carrying it. Used to get mine from TWISTED HOBBIES who no longer carries it either. Due to increased shipping cost. @@SteffenRC
@@Technicallyaddicted I've become an adhesive junkie while repairing planes and testing glues, so anything that will work better then what I have is a winner. I'll look into that tape.. Thanks..
@@SteffenRC it’s your video that made me experiment. I’m just now noticing how much of your content I watch. Subbed for sure. Lmk if you have any problems that we can bang our heads together and figure out. I’m pretty good with foamies and park flyers and I’m about to get a $2,000 3d printer.
These are factory foam hinges. They get damaged and fail over time or in a crash. Using certain flexible adhesives will fix the foam hinge. Or some pilots just add mechanical hinges.... Options.... Thanks for commenting - Will
If you were to loose your plane in the sun, almost crash into a pavilion and rip your aileron off - can E6000 be used on an EPO foam plane to fix the hinges if you dont own Foamtac? I ordered some on amazon but have E6000 at the house... Thanks in advance.
1st.. Don't fly into the sun Icarus.... 2nd. E6000 could work, just use a very thin amount.. The only issue you'll have is E6000 take some time to setup. While the Foamtac is tacky and will hold pretty quick.
Look at Gorilla Glue “Clear Grip” contact adhesive. Exactly like Beacon Foam Tac but it’s half the price, locally procurable, and I think stronger. I’ve completely quit using Foam Tac or anything else.
Well, thats another I gotta try out. I've done two glue tests (videos on my channel) and I only tested Gorilla Glue Clear.. It didn't rank as high as others, but now I'd like to test your recommendation and Gorilla Glue white against some of the leaders. Thanks for the info.. Will
Will - sure thing. GG Clear Grip is my go-to. I can’t really tell any difference between it and Foam-Tac…..other than it’s half the price and locally procurable. Curious to see what you think.
You gotta use a fine line of glue to re-attach the control surface. It will mend/weld the original foam hinge. It’s not perfect, but it works pretty darn well. Your other option is a CA hinge.
@@thenolan5xboy516 I think I know what you mean. With tape. You must apply the tape on the top of the flap with the flap in the full down position. Then, flip the plane over and apply the tape with the flap in the up position

I've has some bottles that are more viscous than others for sure. I think the best success with freshness is buying the bag of tiny bottles/vials.. They seem to stay liquidy longer and stay fresh.. Its a wonderful adheasive, but there are many other good ones out there too.. I test a mess of them in another video on my channel. Thanks Will

@SteffenRC I've just been messing around with a glider. I found an amazing turf and flexible tape, silver color, Sticks well and easy to remove . Think came from Kmart.

This is absolutely not the best way to repair this type of broken hinge, installing Dubro pinned hinges is the best bet, very easy and won’t break again,
I don't think there is a "Best" way to do anything. I believe there are many ways to solve these modeling repairs. Gluing a foam hinge is a simple solution and it works well.
