    Thanks so much for this great video - at the end of last summer we had a squeaking sound happening from our 18 yr-old Goldstar unit and I assumed it was a bad bushing that I was not excited to replace. Surprisingly, this summer it made no noise - until today when it started back up again, and your video opened my eyes to a possibly different cause. I just went outside and couldn't hear the noise out there, so I'm certain I have an issue with the front fan similar to yours, where it's rubbing against styrofoam or something else. Excited to take it apart soon! Thanks so much for the encouragement to fix it yourself!!

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  5 лет назад

      I don't know. I've never had an AC with and an air swing. But, I would probably start by getting inside the unit and examining it for any obvious signs of breakage, misalignment, etc. If all looks well, I'd probably test any electrical feeds to any driving mechanisms. But, I'm only guessing.

    Hi. Great video. Tks. My problem is I bought a brand new window unit, and when the compressor comes on.. It radles and the vibration is so LOUD! I can hardly hear myself think, let alone cary on a conversation
    I have to have my TV up so loud. I can send you a video if you like.
    Tks in advance. Dawn

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  3 года назад +1

      @Dawn Harman My first thought is: If it is new, return it. If you can swap it out of another one, you'll be better off. If that's not an option... We can probably rule out "a bad compressor" since it's new. So, maybe first check to make sure the unit is secured well and fairly level. It should tilt downward slightly to allow water to run out of the window, but the angle should not be too extreme. If that seems okay and there is still a rattle, there may be something loose inside or perhaps something shifted in shipment to the store. If you feel comfortable, I would suggest following the same procedure that I did in this video. Take out the unit. Open it up. Then, carefully, run a test to see if you can isolate the problem. It could be a pad part, but it might just require the tightening of a screw or the shifting of a component. It's hard to say until you get inside.

    Can you make any more hack like videos? Not like the viral ones with fake hacks. But can you do videos for all of us who have not properly learned to do "adult -ing," like stuff. How to clean light fixtures. How to get rid of calcium build ups on toilets, or faucets. How to coupon properly. How to mend clothes or socks. How to fix buttons. Mainly some "guy," or "girl," stuff too. Like shaving tips.. best ways to clean..how to get quality clothing staples cheap.. idk everything.
    Just don't worry about views..and pump out videos twice a week.
    So many of us have not had opportunities to learn things. Either our parents said, "don't ask about our finances!," or anytime we did chores, we get yelled at for doing it wrong, but never taught the, "right," way

    my old kenmore through the wall air conditioner still works great but vibrates and is so noisy...i have tried using some tape ..the vents seem to rattle and so do the front cover slats...when i press my hand on it its much better but i cant stand there forever lol..i even bought this giant clamp thing to squeeze it top to bottom and it helps..but not quite the cure at this point...dont know if there is a way to muffle it better...its old but you know these old appliances work great and you buy a new one and it craps out in a couple years...i dont want to take the chance yet...any ideas?

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  2 года назад

      @Judith Wilber A rattle could be caused by something out of alignment. Perhaps something has shifted inside. A fan could be hitting. There could be wobble in the motor caused by a loose mount or a bad bearing. The only way to really know is to open it up and check it out. Just be careful if you do that. It's easy to get injured or shocked if you touch the wrong thing. I don't want to tell anybody anything that's going to get them hurt. If you feel comfortable investigating, you can unmount the AC, take off the housing cover, plug it in & turn it on, and listen for the noise. You may be able to pinpoint the cause. Often, it is a simple fix. If you give it a try, let me know what you find. Good luck!

    I've had mine for about two months and it just started making a very loud buzzing noise if I set it on cool and won't blow any cold air. It stays quiet if it's set on just normal fan.

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  4 года назад

      @360whiplash Hmmm... Well, it definitely sounds like there is a problem with your fan. I'd open up the AC & test to see if current is getting to the fan. If it is not, the problem is probably in the capacitor or control panel. If current is getting to the fan, but the fan motor is not engaging, then your fan motor is probably shot. As for the buzzing, it is probably the compressor engaging or trying to engage. The capacitor is the most likely thing to go up. If your capacitor is bad, your compressor will try to engage, but it won't be able to & will create a loud buzzing sound. You may find that a bad capacitor is causing all of your trouble & they are easy to replace. So maybe start there. Be sure to discharge your capacitor before messing with it or you could get shocked.

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  6 лет назад +1

      Your compressor might be going bad or it might just be the capacitor. Try testing or replacing the capacitor. It's a fairly cheap part and it might do the trick.

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  2 года назад

      @Michael Psycho Try making sure the back of the unit is a little bit lower than the front. That should stop the water from running into the house.

      @@everexpandinglife okay imma definitely make sure while I was cleaning the unit something came off of the Cooper its like a black molding thing right next to the refrigeration equipment black thing it was a small tube of Cooper I tried to put it back on but the black molding it all crumbled and wouldn't stay how it came off due to water I was deep cleaning it to get all the mold out also got my drill and made a small hole carefully and made a drainage for it

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  2 года назад

      @Michael Psycho Just so long as the copper system itself isn't damaged, you should be ok. Try to determine what the piece of black molding was doing. Was it a spacer or a cushion of some sort? If it's function was essential, perhaps you can replace it with something else.

    Do you know if the control panel comes apart easily? A couple of my LEDs have burnt out

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  3 года назад

      @Noah Decoteau I haven't had to do that, but I wouldn't think it would be too hard. If you pop out the circuit board, you'll find the LED soldered to the board in two spots. You can order a new led, but you have to be careful because it only goes in in one direction. The longer leg of the led is the positive. The shorter leg is the ground. My bigger concern would be: What caused the led to blow in the first place? You could replace the led only to have it blow again if the cause of the blow is not fixed.

    I have the same one! Water has been coming out of the fan area and the bottom left hand corner, I put it in a slop and it's still doing it, and also put a cloth on the outside to hopefully drain it, but that's not working either, any idea of what's wrong?
    Also, the fan just made the same noise as yours, I want to fix that but need to know about the water issues in the fan.

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  4 года назад +2

      @Carmen Fox It is normal for water to gather in the bottom tray of the AC. However, there are three things to look at to make sure it is functioning properly. 1) Make sure that the AC is tilted slightly down hill towards the outside. 2) Make sure that the drain hole on the outside bottom of the AC is not clogged so the water can drain. 3) Make sure that the drain hole is through the wall/window enough to drain outside, not inside. With all of those things set properly, the water problem should be solved. Now... in this video I deal with a misaligned fan causing the noise problem. However, I am currently editing a new video that I will upload soon that addresses a noise issue caused by a bad bearing. So, if this video doesn't help you, the next one might. Subscribe so you're alerted when I post the new video. Hope this info helps. Feel free to ask more questions if needed. Good Luck!

    • @carmenfox4114

      Yeah, pretty much a do-it-yourself guy. Its tilted, there is no drain hole on the Haier ac model you and I have, same one. Just water coming out the front vent, where the fan and styrofoam is

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  4 года назад +1

      @Carmen Fox OK. So the big questions are: "Is there water accumulating in the bottom of your AC?" and "Is that the problem?" If the answer to both of those questions is "Yes", then you might consider taking out your AC, removing the cover so you can see what you are doing & drilling a drain hole in the bottom, in a spot that will clear the wall/window & will not hit any components. That would give your AC an opportunity to drain. However, my big concern is that you may have a leak in your system. There could be a hole in the copper tubing of one of the radiators or somewhere else along the line. In which case, it may be unfixable. Take out the AC, uncover it & (being very careful not to touch any moving parts or internal wires) plug in the unit & turn it on. Examine the system, looking for the source of any leak. Good luck!

    Why does my AC make random noises while it's off? Every other night I hear it powering up as if it's running through some kind of self diagnostic cycle or something. I'm not sure if I should turn it off at the mains during winter or if this is a necessary thing it's meant to do as part of maintenance?

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  4 года назад +1

      @ArcanePath360 Some AC/Heater units have a safety. If the ambient temperature gets below a certain point, the heater will automatically kick on. If there is no heater, then that's not going to be a factor. Maybe double check all of your settings to make sure nothing is set to "auto". Otherwise, it may be a malfunction and turning it off at the mains would be a good safety precaution.

    • @ArcanePath360
      @ArcanePath360 4 года назад +1

      @@everexpandinglife There is a heater, it's something that only lasts a few seconds at a time. It sounds like a pump is kicking in, something powers up, whirls for a bit (I think it's coming from the outside compressor) and then it shuts off again.

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  4 года назад

      @arcanepath360 The compressor is used for both heating and cooling. If you are running the heater, you can expect it to kick on sometimes. But, even if everything is off, the heater will turn on if the air temperature gets too low. Otherwise, I'm not sure why the compressor would kick on for no reason. I once had a unit with a bad compressor and its pump would try to kick on for a few seconds and then fail. Then it would try again later and fail again. But I was actively trying to use the unit. It was not set to off. I had to replace the whole unit, since a compressor repair is beyond my abilities. However, it your AC & Heater function normally when used, your compressor is probably good. I suppose there could be some other problem in the system, like a leak or a control panel issue.

    • @ArcanePath360
      @ArcanePath360 4 года назад +1

      @@everexpandinglife Thanks. I was thinking it's like a diagnostic thing, it comes on for a few seconds, has a pulsing like pattern which always sounds the same, then a longer pause, and then off. No fan is on, it's just a barely audible low frequency hum. I'm wondering if turning it off at the mains might do more harm than good, if this is some kind of way it relieves pressure or something in extreme cold. I've not turned it on in months.

    • @everexpandinglife
      @everexpandinglife  4 года назад

      @Arcanepath360 It sounds like your compressor is trying to come on, but can't. It could be a bad capacitor. If neither the heat nor AC work and the compressor tries to come on, but can't... it is usually a bad capacitor. The capacitor is what allows the unit to build up enough current to power the compressor. 9 times out of 10, if something goes wrong with one of my units, it is that. The good news is that capacitors are real easy to change.
