- This is a short video that is meant as a beginners intro for my students on how to go about coding textual data.
Whether your method is content analysis, in-depth interviewing, participant observation, focus groups, or more formal ethnography, you will need to code your data.
I use a few excerpts from my dissertation data, to present a beginners introduction to coding, using a textual analysis software called dedoose.
I am a assistant professor on the tenure track in New York City. I have a Ph.D in Political Science, and I study the intersection of race, gender, and class.
Dedoose did not pay me for this video, its a software that has been very useful for my work since I was a grad student. At $11/month for students, its also one of the more affordable options for students doing qualitative analysis.

Hi Dr. Moffett- Bateau, I'm Lauren, you just gained a new student haha, thank you for this, I appreciate you
This video was very helpful as a first time Dedoose user working on a qualitative dissertation project. Thank you Dr. Moffett-Bateau!
Thank you! I know you mentioned that you weren't going to teach us how to use Dedoose in the video, but you did! 😀 I appreciate the time and suggestions you provided for qualitative coding.
Very helpful. I'm in the midst of coding for my dissertation (using Dedoose) and I picked up several tips from your video. Thank you.
Same here! Best wishes to you on your project, wish me luck!
Thank you so much, after viewing countless videos on dedoose I have finally found one that is clear and in depth. Thank you thank you.
Thank you for your kind words. I am so glad you found the video helpful.
Thanks so much for the video
Using dedoose now for my PhD research
This was so helpful. I watched a bunch of videos and still didn’t know how to make this work for my project. Your intro made everything come together. Thank you.
I am so glad that the video was helpful to you. Good luck!
Wow, this was so incredibly helpful and transparent. Thanks so much for this walk-through!
Thank you, I’m so glad it was helpful
Thank you, you saved me because my teacher refused to help explain to me how to code in dedoose
Thank you for this - it was so helpful! I'm just starting my coding with Dedoose, and this was by far, the best intro :)
I'm just starting too! One of my colleagues referred to me Dedoose tonight.
I am glad it helped! Good luck on your coding journey!
Dedoose is an awesome piece of software. I hope you have a great time learning it as you explore your data!
Thnaks for sharing, professor!
Thank you!
Thanks Alexandra, this is really helpful!
I'm so glad! You are welcome.
Great video! thanks for making
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Alexandra
Thank you!
Hi this was very helpful. However, I am doing a qualitative content analysis of RUclips videos for my dissertation. I believe I need to analyze 3- 4 videos ( I hope that's not too many, I'll take your recommendations). I know that RUclips does transcripts and I was wondering if I use videos of individuals talking to others in a podcast interview type video or a group of individuals talking with each other (or a single person reacting to content) is there a method for doing that?
so helpful thank you!
This was helpful! Thank you!
I’m so glad it helped!
Hello, thank you for your good video. Is this ?
software able to analyze Persian data as well?
I don’t see why not!
