The Saints went into this match in 3rd position on the ladder and in great form having had a superb come from behind victory at Geelong the week before. The Hawks had 4 wins on the board but had only won one of their last 4. In a stunning match the Saints shot out to a 63 point lead early in the second quarter before a stunning Hawthorn comeback.

A tragic day in St Kilda history. Marked the definite end of a quite successful era and killed the confidence of a lot of our younger players. We bombed the rest of the season and most of the following 2 years.
