Polygamy is part of our legal system in South Africa. If you want to marry a second wife, you must be married in terms of Customary law & your first wife must consent to that marriage. If your second wife does not agree, your second marriage will be regarded as invalid by courts. Some men take a second wife because the first wife is unable to have children, then they decide to bring a second wife to the family to bear children. Sometimes the family has many businesses, they need assistance from someone they can trust, they may decide to bring a second wife…the first wife may help in choosing the correct person etc.

The key to the conversation though is does it work as a society? I get frustrated with these topics of the past involving women because it's like so many things can happen in the past and be wrong or in this case, not conducive to their society. There are tons of things that were acceptable in the early years of African American history but much has changed because we as people evolved and both black men and women clap and say whew glad those days are over. But let it be about women specifically. Then it's oh who cares it was done years ago and it was ok. Women bring up dumb practices that they generally don't like or feel was disrespectful and men feel it's emotional but when Africans faced adversities that are no longer around because it was collectively seen as prehistoric inhumane then its ok man yall kick rocks !!!

Polygamy is a sign of social imbalance. Not enough available men for every woman. Either due to a lack of numbers (caused by war) or lack of wealth amongst average men. When this imbalance exists, the few men --- with sufficient resources --- will frequently enjoy the company of many women. Conversely, women suffer from lack of choice. The ideal outrcome is to have society where the majority of men can thrive, and there is a good man for every woman.

@@theoracle6881 to be fair, Polygamy is meant to be about security. Each wife should have their own house. It’s not meant to be a dusty living with 3 women sharing the same bathroom.
In countries without a welfare state/ safety net, and limited wealthy men, polygamy makes sense. In wealthier countries they practice polyamory which is less about financial benefits.
The other lady describes Polygamy by saying each wife had the same house, and their children went to the same quality of school.
*Where it becomes difficult is in matters of inheritance.* Sometimes families can loose their homes when the patriarch dies. In countries with a strong rule of law, a legally binding will provide more protection. But how many practising polygamy know whether there’s a will?
If the houses remain in the husbands name the hier / eldest child or first family might feel entitled and less charitable towards the other families. This happens, and *that’s why some who have been evicted when the husband dies are against polygamy.*

Sadly discussing Polygamy in the view of Feminism or Chauvinism will not show the true reflections of it. I am not from Uganda but it seems from what those ladies are saying, in Uganda Polygamy was imported to them by their colonizers. To share my knowledge and experience, in Southern Africa Polygamy is a Ba-Ntu tradition of many a years back. Women and Men consent into it even today. It was never solely reserved for kings or queens. It was a practice of family planning and family pride, nothing more. Our Clan Names even tell the story of that. Monogamy is the thing that was imported to us in the Southern parts of Africa.

Same thing exist upon nilotic peoples in the east, the young women was ignorant about our history. Marriage is a means of consolidating alliances with different clans and bloodlines. The notion of romantic relationships being the basis of marriage is a western idea, marriage has always been primarily for the family and secondary the sharing of love between a couple. To forsake polygamy is to negate your own existence and your clan, our forefarthers married multiple women and propagated their seed. We lived in egalitarian societies where every child, women and man's need were accounted and taken cared for.

If certain women out there get down with polygamy, more power to them. I just don’t care for the way that it’s being pushed on the black community as a whole. Do you, but remember, it’s only for those who embrace it. Period.
I will NOT be in a polygamous relationship period!
I was married for 20 years to an amazing black king. He did NOT believe in multiple women or wives. I am now a widow, and I would not get remarried since polygamy is being pushed as a reinstatement for us blacks.
I don’t do polygamy or interracial relationships and marriages. Period!
No, I would never make any exceptions of any super stars or otherwise to cheat on my man with, and wouldn’t stay if I found out that he did it either.
However like Oshay said, it’s not my business what these folks do, but respect the fact that there are some of us that
do not believe in it and do not owe an explanation as to why we don’t embrace it, and I don’t t care if a man is rich to take care of me. He can’t pay me to knowingly enter into a polygamist relationship. Keep your money. My husband left me in a very capable position.
Glad to hear these ladies being able to speak out on how they feel about this practice. I’m sure they had to watch many elder women endure this quietly, but those days are over , and I’ve noticed that a lot of young black women are starting to walk away and focus on careers and education rather than stay and compromise with these kinds of situations.

It's stems from agricultural societies, where many hands were needed to work the land & economic output was based on how much agricultural output a family produced.
Further to this child bearing & child birth were treacherous for women & life expectancy for children was also low. Having many children was the way to ensure future generations & survival.

yes, very true. and quite frankly, we do need wealthy black men to provide for the many black single mothers that exist. this is also the role of men. it is not just about marrying virgin wives.
this is difficult, but it "comes with the territory." personally, if i do decide to have more than 1 wife, this definitely would be part of my planning. but i would need to have already established stability with at least 2 wives first who were not single mothers.
if i can manage the first two and my own children with these two, then i would start maybe trying to help and marry single mothers who are alone with their children. of course, this will cost them something and they will have specific roles to play. as stable men, we have a duty to bring stability to other people in our community.

a lot of the nuances and examples shes describing in her qualms about polygamy are mostly from instances where the man is most likely monogamous then cheats and creates a new family. From my knowledge polygamy is when there is consent from both parties and the results are sealed within marriage. The two qalms the women are expressing are actually disputes with polyamory not really polygamy. Polygamy presents structure, polyamory doesn't. In actuality women of today hate the idea of structure so they bash polygamy but are all okay with cheating and being entrenched in polyamorous relationships as long as they don't know. They want to be delulu! The same way women want to steal men in marriages/relationships, they love to equip monogamous spouses with the ability to cheat. The love cheating but hate structure that stops it. I believe this is a take missing from this discussion.
The only thing to blame is the society which has conditioned men to be in monogamous relationships and unfortunately its only failing the africans inland and in the diaspora. The only tool monogamy has equipped men/women is the ability to cheat.

Ndagire is confused. Polygamy predates money and colonialism. It was a way of growing families and abolishing orphans. If a woman's husband dies early, she then became the responsibility of the relative that would be assigned the responsibility, then continue to have more children. If also a woman could not bear children, her relative would be asked to come fulfil the role.
Colonisation came and didn't even want to recognise those Customary marriages and made people lose their inheritances because they preferred to see one civil marriage certificate, which only made provision for one spouse.

😊 my dear sister, polygamy has been part of African culture as long as Africans have existed. It isn't a colonial thing, Europeans as with Christianity, introduced a nuclear family to the African community.
Most polygamous marriages I know are by rich men who can afford to keep his ladies. Any woman marrying a poor man who already have another wife and can't even support her has a problem. In the West where polygamy is illegal, we have the highest rate of broken marriage.
Is it ok for a man or woman to get married several times or sleep around with different partners just because we are against polygamy/polyandry?
The way I see it, it's better to be in a relationship where you know all parties involved than to be in an unfaithful relationship. It's also much better for the children.
But each to his/her own. I think we all should what makes us happy.

If a woman does not like successful men having multiple women then they need to start being more receptive to broke to average earning men. In the early 1900's working class men were the ones that married one wife and built strong amazing families. The rich afluent men were not the ones building the strong families. But for some reason, now-a-days women look down on hard working blue collar men...

The young woman is right. The problem is that most of the men who engaged in polygamy aren't rich men but poor as f*ck. Rich men marry rich and educated women and have one wife. All over Africa, there are children's homes filled with kids. My African friend is the oldest of 13 kids of a man who died in his 30s, leaving behind three wives. My friend, being the oldest, is technically responsible for all those kids. She talks about how her family has suffered from poverty. My friend is a lovely person but just born in a weird society. She has four kids by different men and thinks God will take care of her.

I used to think that taking what women want into consideration was an important ethic. Now, that i have seen what such a mentality has done to western womem, I honestly can say I could careless what women want. Why? Because every society has shown thus far that when women get the upperhand, they could careless what men or society want.

Ooooooo my gosh feminism has now taken root in my beloved Uganda. This was by far the number one African nation where the most pure African wives in culture and values could be found. The war on polygamy is the modern African woman's attempt to replicate western woman's norms and values that is actually failing in the west. Or is it that men Practicing polygamy in Uganda are not for filling the responsibility and requirements needed to support more than one wife.

Its a problem that women cant express they want to sleep with many men? Do women really think men and women are the same? When a men sleeps with a woman, it is assumed that he will bear the responsibility of the child if conceived. If a woman sleeps with a man, will she be responsible? Furthermore, if a woman sleeps around, how can she insure paternity? And if she does, will it be with a man who can provide? The calculation in sleep around in absolutely different for men and women.

The young lady stated that the white man brought polygamy to Africa. I do not understand polygamy at all. Because she has been brainwashed by the white man that polygamy is wrong. And when women use cheating is polygamy they are incorrect cheating is cheating cheating is not knowing the person is saying someone else that is cheating. Because a man is dated one woman and then they didn't another woman and the other woman do not know about the other one in essence it is polygamy but in practice it is not because the two women do not know each other. What the white man brought to Africa is the disdain for polygamy. If the young lady knew where polygamy was originated she would not have said that the white man brought polygamy to Africa. The ligament was not created by men . It was created by women and if she remembered anything about her African ancestry she knows that in the past it was a taboo for a woman not to be married or not to have children. One of the things about men we kill each other off we always going to war The women realize that there are less and less men in the village in more and more women in the village to solve the problem of not being married and not having children the women agreed to share the men. Because there were not enough men in the village.

This is the same old issue of women having been conditioned to believe that they are the same as men. It goes waaaay back to the beginning of things.
If this was a S.A.T question it would women are to "want to be like men" as men are as "want to be their own god"
