I'm 29, just got my hunters safety.. Been out with a bow a few times, started shooting skeet on weekends, started Taekwondo a few months ago, started bushcraft/backpacking.. These are all things I never grew up doing, that I want to at least become semi-competent to teach my kid who will be born a month from now :D never too late to start, I'm a year sober and never felt better in my entire life! Oh, also got pretty good at baking bread.. smoking meat, and canning in the last couple months too. Christ is #1, Diet is #2.. Another thing that has been the primary focus of my life this past year, learning how to worship, pray, and serve Jesus.
Edit! My baby girl has been home for 2 weeks now! Shes healthy, smart, and makes me want to slam weights harder at the gym, getting strong to protect her :)
Update. Baby girl is 3months old, strong, chubby, and happy! I also went from 148lbs body weight to 175lbs! Been at the gym 4 days a week, Squat 250, Deadlift 250, bench 200... Let's go!!!!

I’ll say this is subjective. He has a different way of introducing himself to each individual. Having kids brought me to God. Holding my son on the day he was born completely changed me. I did a complete 180. I didn’t have a great father figure to model being a father off of. I only knew how I wouldn’t be as a father. I started reading books and seeking out good fathers. And then I was lead to the Bible - the ultimate guide to being a great father.

This is very accurate, I claimed to be saved but did Not live a Christ led life. However, since learning I’m having a son, it has really opened my eyes up to what I’ve done. Almost like it was His way of bringing me closer to Him since I didn’t have a father figure in my life.

The only thing missing from this podcast is grace. A real man forgives quickly and shows grace. A real man also embraces grace knowing they will never meet the standard set by God. We can try and try and we should try every day but the standard is Christ and we will never reach it. So the grace and mercy of Christ is an essential part of our gospel that I didn’t hear in this podcast.
Edit: I want to add to this a little bit to clarify some things for people. My point in commenting this was that it’s important to fully represent Christ if we are going to at all. We as believers don’t get to pick and choose what we believe or overemphasize the points that fit our lives and make us feel good. It’s easy to focus on a particular aspect of Christ and use it to justify our actions rather than changing our actions to reflect Him as completely as we can. We obviously won’t ever get there but that’s what it means to be sanctified, to become more like Christ. So while they highlighted an important piece of being a god fearing man they left out one of the most crucial pieces that is the center of our Gospel. If God had the attitude many of us do in these comments we’d be roasting for eternity. Graciousness and patience is every bit as manly as strength and righteous aggression. Our primary goal should always be to point people to Christ in everything we do whether it be protecting the innocent or showing mercy to those who don’t deserve it.

@@burtonjernigan1997 read the Bible first and foremost. Everything about being a GOOD man can be gone in scripture. You don’t need to be some crazy mountain man or quit your job if you work in an office. Love deeply and protect those you love fiercely. Aggression also does not equal masculinity. Controlled righteous aggression does. John Lovell is a great resource on biblical manhood. There is much more to being a good man than being “masculine” that’s a small part of it.

They show their masculinity by being a damn good leader, provider and honest to god person. You don't have to be the stereotypical bearded aggressive 300lb bench pressing guy to be "a man". @@ShiniGuraiJoker that’s great. I’m not really criticizing you. I’m criticizing what wfh usually cultivates. You hear what mike says about losing community and losing the ability to talk to each other? People staying in their houses more and more is causing this. I’m not saying it’s an absolute. I’m saying I’ve seen it over and over again that people tend to just stay stuck in their own home with this. You lose something by trying to make your life more efficient and ordering food and groceries online isolating yourself from people more. You missed those interactions by not going out. Socializing skills decrease. As we’ve learned since the internet has gotten bigger, talking online does not transfer to in person conversation. I think that’s abundantly clear with our general feeling in America. Kids go outside less. Everyone goes outside less. That results in what mike is talking about.. less masculine and weaker men. I really don’t think I’m wrong.. humans in general in America have kind of decreased in socialization and total outdoor time. I’m almost positive my social skills have decreased with all the automation. I would bet 90% of everyone else’s has too. The internet does absolutely have good in it but us humans are just lazy. 99% of us abuse it and use it for laziness. We also try to gain efficiency but don’t realize we lose something in the process.. the ability to communicate with each other like humans for 1000s of years have mostly done. This has birthed the toxic online thing you see now. Worse than ever. People depressed in mass and the new generation is statistically the most lonely. Millions of men severely weakened from being chronically online and refusing to go outside and workout.. or to just learn to be men by cultivating in real life experiences. I would say work from home people are interacting less, going outside less, and in general become a much more soft human being. Sensibilities are more fragile from it. Your completely safe in your home where nothing can get you and no one can challenge you. Sensibilities weakened.. why were our grandfathers so damn tough? Friction. Conflict. In general, more challenges cultivated them to have stronger resolves. Much more masculinity about them because of it and the physical labor they endured. I’m not saying they were perfect but we are a far cry from them in terms of toughness and masculinity.
Sorry this is way to long of a thing to condense. I’m only just seeing people starting to talk about this. I’ve been internally freaking out about but people are so engrossed in their bubble online that they don’t want to talk about it being a problem. it’s not an attack on you I promise and it’s not just working from home. It’s everything that has to do with being online. But being a fire fighter, a soldier.. typically cultivates tougher more masculine men. Doing something physically and mentally tough in person. I’m not saying it can’t be done.. it just doesn’t typically cultivate it.

Wow really awesome going into these topics on your podcast. I love seeing the shift to talking about these very real, core issues. Shawn Ryan Show, Warrior Poet Society, Fieldcraft, everyone is really getting to the core of the problem now. This is great stuff.

I'm always striving to be a "Mighty Man of God"... a "Warrior Poet". I'm far from perfect, but I'm always striving to learn from the examples of those who the Bible identifies as "Mighty Men" or "Righteous Men". ...learning from both the good that they did, as well as the mistakes that they made.

Thanks to the host and guest for standing I'm the gap. Real MEN who love a REAL GOD.
As an African American who grew up in the suburbs, Christianity and sports gave me a solid foundation to virtuous manhood.
Got married at 25, and I've been wrestling with the institutions and perception of racism in society and the church. I've lived and worked by more ethnic groups via the military than most people, that not being surrounded by diversity feels odd.
To add, orthodox Christianity cast a shadow on church history and the origins of diversity in regard to the lineage of Messiah. At times, it's difficult to embrace Christianity in American culture when one feels rejected by it....
Likewise, sometimes it feels like I don't fit in with this group or that group.
Only the love of Christ can reconcile and redeem the hearts of men.

Mike a great movie to watch that is based on what youre talking about is 'Risen'. Of a Roman guard, a fighting man of leadership in the Roman legion at the time of Christ. He has authority, hes a badass warrior and the scene toward the end when he speaks to Jesus makes me tear up every time.

I get your point but it’s way over to the other side. It’s about the right attitude at the right time. Imagine Jesus having been all rough with the prostitutes he helped? There’s a time to be a warrior and a time to be a gardener. That’s what a man is

This podcast really hit home... I'm 35, never married, no kids. I've always believed in the lord, but definitely a heavy sinner and chose to not walk with Jesus. I've slept with loads of women. And honestly it's my biggest regret. I wish I could roll back the clock and would have pursued marriage years ago instead of chasing women for sexual conquest. It's disgusting and I hope you younger men don't fall into the trap of modern society. Be a godley man, build yourself, build a family.

EXCELLENT episode! I stumbled upon this video today and wow, I am subscribing. As a woman who seeks to be godly, wise and feminine, it's so encouraging to see men like you both talking about godly masculinity. Such good insight on the type of men we need in our world. Thank you so much!

How you described walking into church and not feeling like you can fit in, is exactly how I felt most of my chirstian life. It passed, I found the Catholic church works for me. But in collage, all the dudes were how you described, and it pushed me away from the church.

My wife and I homeschooling our kids through high school. We covered Latin, but used a Christian Worldview as the filter we ran everything through. I retired from the military, was the sole wage earner and in my off time, we hunted, fished, hiked, camped, taught my kids basic car maintenance, how to shoot, when to shoot. Looking at what government schools put out today, we thank God, we homeschooling our kids.
