"Kill Anything": Israeli Soldiers Say Gaza Atrocities Came from Orders for Indiscriminate Fire

- democracynow.org - A new report based on testimonies of Israeli soldiers concludes the massive civilian death toll from last summer’s Israeli assault on Gaza resulted from a policy of indiscriminate fire. The Israeli veterans group Breaking the Silence released testimonies of more than 60 Israeli officers and soldiers which it says illustrate a "broad ethical failure" that "comes from the top of the chain of command." More than 2,200 Palestinians were killed in the assault, the vast majority civilians. On Israel’s side, 73 people were killed, all but six of them soldiers. During the 50-day operation, more than 20,000 Palestinian homes were destroyed, and hundreds of thousands of people are still displaced. We hear candid video testimonies from the soldiers and speak to former Israeli paratrooper Avner Gvaryahu, director of public outreach at Breaking the Silence.

listening to this guy, total biased viewpoint. I trust common sense, history and experience over this guy's feelings. It's common knowledge that palestinian civilians launch surprise guerilla attacks via any means possible via knives, guns, suicide vests, etc. Why should the IDF soldiers put themselves at further risk? This video also fails to mention the warnings via leaflets written in arabic dropped on the area for the civilians to evacuate or risk harm.

so much for being the most moral army in the world, as if any one would believe that. I would also not expect to see this story or one like it on any US corporate media network. It is also not at all surprising that Israel act likes this when they know the US is going to cover for them in the UN and give them free money and weapons. If Americans truly care about Israel they need to call for some tough love; otherwise, Israel will not be a country worth saving, until then they need to be BDS.

There's one thing I don't understand : what's the reason explaining no military tribunal has yet ordered to seize all Breaking-The-Silence records, in an hyper-militarized country where such a tribunal can (and does regularly) censor any information it deems sensitive ? There were a few trials of conscientious objectors already, and apparently the arguments these people produced led parts of the Israeli society to question certain aspects of the predominance of the military. Are the joint chiefs / Is the government afraid suing all these whistleblowers might create too much of a backlash ?...
I think most of the break the silence soldiers were those who had been living in other countries esp USA and had come to Israel as 18 /19 year old to work in IDF. Then they left. But you are right, as many are still in Israel. Apart from Break the silence soldiers, there are a few other voices - much older men, like Ex- Mossad or a retired army general who have made quite shocking descriptions of what they did and spoke to give Palestinians rights. But I guess these people are very few esp in the loud pro Israel voices of the west it does not matter. As long as the general public view of Americans is in their favour Israel is safe.

But you still fired at a school and if you knew it was being used and still fired that is terrible but because of technicality, in wording of laws you can deflect being accused of a war crime. "so many spoke out" but only TWO are published? the way this is reported is very repetitive and descriptive on what the soldiers are about to repeat first hand anyway: "and this is an Israeli soldier expressing his feelings", "and this is an Israeli soldier describing how they would shoot freely to make their presence felt", etc.. Overall this sounds more like an extra layer of protection from possible backfire because "Oh they're not all the same.." but oh yes they all just shot without the need of orders anyway so now that they grew a conscience they're forgiven everything? That is not enough, you have to do something productive to make it better. Rebuild their city for one. Get slapped by mothers who lost sons, daughters and husbands for second. Creating debate is not enough.
No matter what, they all know what theyre doing is wrong and that ita a sin. Especially if you are a religious person, you know its wrong in the eyes of God.

What if I told you: those people were paid to say such things.
I have a friend in the IDF who was in Gaza, he said they didn't allow him to shoot even one bullet without clearance.
The story about the tank destroying random buildings is bullshit for at least two reasons:
1) The tanks are used to cover infantry, you can't just fire any house you want without clearance because it may have friendly forces inside. the guy clearly said he didn't get any clearance from high command, just his tank commander.
2) After every operation they count all the wasted shells and the tank commander must explain where each shell went, there aren't that many shells to just shoot them freely. This isn't the US army who have unlimited resources and can waste ammunition freely.
Also, the guy said it was really hot in the tanks, the Israeli tanks have air conditioning units so it's not hot in them, another inconsistency in his story.
Then how did 500k people become homeless after this according to the un sounds like everyone's houses was destroyed
