They probably stole your tools because you didn't park within your space.
A little harsh, no?
@@mattjackson3996Not really. Parking outside the lines is stealing a parking space.
In your version of Justice should I expect the thief to bring my tools back when I return the parking place! Good grief.
@@NextLevelCarpentry Just be respectful when you park. Simple as that. You inconvenience someone else when you park like that and there is no reason for it unless you are blind.
@@garyh4458and in your thinking suitable punishment for a slight inconvenience when there's hundreds of open parking spaces within a few steps is for the offended person to break the law and steal $1,000 worth of tools? Wow.
There is a special place in hell for tool thieves. They not only steal an object but also a livelihood.
In that place all batteries will fail after the thief has crawled deep into a sewer-like crawlspace at the exact moment the tool is needed, forcing them to crawl back out, swap batteries at an infernal charger, and crawl back in... for an eternity!
We work for our tools, they just steal them. SCUM!
I remember when, where I lived, tools did not get stolen. Because workmen bought their own tools and everyone knew that you stopped a man earning a living by taking his tools. I think the rot started when companies like the Gas and Electric companies started issuing their workers with complete sets of tools, which they didn’t care about and left everywhere, because they could get a new one by asking ! So the low lives took it that it was ok to take them. That’s not all of it, because employment levels come into it.
I had some tools stolen from me a little over a year ago. Luckily i had a very loyal client who had a very important prototype project for me to finish and i was the only one he trusted enough to complete it for him. He immediately bought most of the tools i lost in the theft, paid our originally agreed to price for the build and he sent another client my way.
Sounds like a great fit between you and your client... a rare thing these days.
@@NextLevelCarpentry For sure. I've been very blessed with some great clients over the years. Love your videos. Please keep up the good work!
@@UTubed119 can I ask what you do? Thanks.
@@RealGeorg3 It's a little complicated but the short story is i help game developers design arcade cabinets. I help in design and prototyping by hand before they go off to publisher and eventually cut via CNC. It's not a full time job. Just a side hustle.
@@UTubed119 you must be pretty good at it. Good work.
Burns me up inside when someone has no problem stealing from another person and especially when they most likely use those items for their livelihood. Glad you were able to upgrade though 😊
Thanks, I was actually considering replacing those very tools since they were pretty 'work worn' from years of use and abuse but this episode just forced the issue.
This happened to me at Home Depot parking lot. They caught the person, but I was never reimbursed for having to buy new tools. I did get my tools back from the pawn shop about 6 months later. The thief spent two years in a prison, which I suppose could have been good for him, if and only if he had to work off his restitution penalty. He was a drug addict, so it at least forced him off of whatever drugs he was on for a time, but I believe they have access to them in prison. The system is truly broken.
I was very disappointed to learn during this episode that there's so little hope of catching thieves and even less hope of meaningful prosecution or consequences.
“The saw has to be lucky only once”. Great line. Also a clear and simple safety poster which will be on my table saw fence.
Matt sorry to hear that your tools were stolen. Hope your new acquisition are even better.
Wishing you the best.
Those tools were slated for replacement before long... this just forced the issue and the new ones are much nicer than their old, beat up predecessors!
Sorry about your troubles. I worked in NYC in the 80s, thieves broke into the scaffold shed and stole all our Hilti and Metabo tools!
Thousands of dollars to replace back then!
I hate that it happened, but I'm glad it offered us a chance at an upgrade offer and comparison.
For my datacom business, yes, I would 100% replace the my cordless tools with the same brand, Milwaukee.
However, for my photography business, I can't say that my 30 year Nikon journey would continue, while I love my Nikon gear, I really like some offerings from Canon and others. The only real hold that Nikon has on me is that I know their menu system so well, and I have all their quirks down to a science.
"A record is being kept"
Maybe you could set up a sting because thieves always revisit places they've been lucky in the past. Take one of the boxes and retape it shut with something inside. Park where cameras can get license and wait for fish to bite
It's tempting to set up a 'honey pot' but I'd be willing to bet any 'fish' would get off by pleading entrapment or some such...
I have been buying from Acme tools for years they are great company !
I concur Richard... glad to hear I'm not the only one!
Sorry you experienced that. I'm glad however that in your life you've garnered love and respect from your peers and fellow man that you were able to position yourself to recover all that was lost and hopefully more. May God bless you and reach those who steal so they may turn from their bad deeds.
Sorry you had your tools stolen, I know that pain. Keep up the great videos, we appreciate your hard work!
love me some Makita tools. The corded track saw, 18V hammer drill, driver, trim router, and the 4.5" angle grinder are in my inventory. Going to add the 12" compound sliding miter saw soon.
Sucks major about the tools but awesome to hear you've got an affiliate with ACME! I've used them a bunch and they're always great to work with.
Glad to hear your positive review of ACME John... they'll be glad to hear it too!
I've been in the habit of locking up the vehicle every time I leave it.
So far, so good. Locks don't stop crooks if they want it bad enough.
Nice new tools on the bright side. ✌
Sorry this happened to you! I also use Makita for all my cordless tools, simply can't go wrong with them.
Makita all the way. I've been using them for over 40 years. Never failed me.
I've had tools stolen out of a pickup truck too when I left my job box unlocked over night. I switched to a van and like it so much more. Pickups are targets for thieves due to their impractical layout. Vans make so much more sense for everything but hauling oversized items, which can easily be put on a trailer.
True... but then where do you park the trailer when not in use?
Sorry your tools were stolen. I am glad you were able to get them replaced and upgraded.
Sorry to hear that your tools were stolen - in a parking lot that I frequent on a weekly basis. Reminds us to be vigilant (unfortunately).
Gone are the days where conscience and self respect were enough to deter all but the worst offenders... not anymore!
Sorry to hear about your loss and I bet you will locking your tools in the cab going forward. I also use Makita and have been using them for over 20 years. I must admit if I were to be replacing any of my power tools I would be taking a hard look at Milwaukee . I really enjoy your channel.
There's incentive for influencers like NLC to go to Milwaukee but personally I prefer ergonomics and other features of Makita. In general I think Milwaukee is a more robust/durable tool but, since I'm the only one who works with my tools and thus take care of them and I use them with respect, I prefer them being a bit more nimble albeit a bit less 'durable'.
I've had tools stolen on a few occasions. Unfortunately, it took me a few years to replace my hand tools. Fortunately (?) it only took me a trip to HD to replace my power tools. The power tools were stolen from the bed of my truck, BUT they were secured with a cable and lock. Broad daylight, right after Hurricane Ida, while I was helping people. They drove up, cut the cable and threw the tools in their truck and left.
I typically carry my tools in the back seat of my truck, and luckily to this day haven't had any stolen. The table saw wouldn't fit back there, so it needed to be in the bed.
Also, 8 ft beds rule. I can load lumber and close the gate. Maybe upgrade on your next truck purchase.😂
I’m sorry that happened to you!!
I always lock my truck if I have something long I put it on top of the truck my cap is a high one level with the cab. If ppl want to steal something long go ahead but your not getting my tools…
Anyone can steal tools in any vehicle
Sorry to hear that. You really can’t go wrong between red, yellow or green tools these days. I have the latest generation M12 brushless set and I love them. I know someone with the Atomic brushless set and I was equally impressed by them. I don’t have much experience with Makita, but many of the repairmen that have been to my house carry them and I figure that’s an endorsement in itself.
Sad to hear about. Keep it strong hope you can recover from the lost.
Yeah, no worries... thanks though. I'm in a unique position where loss recovery for the event is not really an issue beyond the embarrassment of the fact 'it happened to me'.
I switched to Ryobi when DeWalt changed their batteries, as you say it's all about one's infrastructure, I have a wall of "battery" styled tool shelves which I 3D printed to hold the tools ready in my workshop. It's scary how many different tools one accumulates in a system over the years. Hope the thief is caught and you had a list of serial numbers for your gear. Weirdly some of my modern shop kit has no s/n… the antiques I can understand. Anyway glad you're up and running again
I always expect the worst from people, and it's been the right course of action more times than not.
My optimism for the greater good of mankind definitely took a hit here!
same here had mine stolen put me out of work for months cost my alot to get back into work all my tools are makita aswell good choice mate
Sad to hear this, humanity is gone sometimes. Hope the new tools serve you Well and make great videos. All thé best
A large part of humanity has drifted quickly in the wrong direction the past few years, that's a for-sure. Makes me grateful for those like yourself who remain steadfastly admirable. 👍😎
It was nice of your brother-in-law to "steal" your tools so they could be replenished! :) I kid...I kid! I hope those scumbags get what they deserve!
The police and insurance company have effective measures to prevent fraudulent claims for situations like this where anyone would be foolhardy to orchestrate such an event in an attempt to upgrade their tools IMHO.
@@NextLevelCarpentry Absolutely. I wasn't trying to say that's what you were trying to do. It was meant as a joke. Having watched you for a while, I would never think you would ever stoop to that level!
I caught the joke and got a chuckle out of it but thought I should add the comment in case other viewers missed it. Always appreciate a little tease from you so I hope you don't stop?
Sorry about your loss! 😭Any chance that you recorded the model & serial numbers? If so, let us know and we can keep an eye 👀 open for them!
Thanks Don... I had only model numbers and users manuals from them... no serial numbers. I'm afraid they're long gone but didn't have much confidence having serial numbers would have made much of a difference.
Many years ago I lived in Rapid City. A mechanic that I worked with had returned from a job in the country late in the evening, so he left his tool box in the company truck in his drive way overnight instead of taking the time to take it to work, unload the tools and bring his vehicle home. Needless to say, his tools were stolen. A few nights later, his brother-in-law was having an adult beverage at a local establishment when he was approached by a person looking to sell some mechanics tools. He had a story about being down on his luck, lost his job, needed money, etc. The brother-in-law went to look at the tools and, you guessed it, these were the stolen tools. Some criminals just aren't very smart.
If only that scenario played out a little more often, right?
Funny how we usually pick a line of tools and stick with it (obviously its setuip that way cause of tools/batteries investment)
I personally was right around the corner of going the Makita lineup....not sure exacxtly what tool but what I needed at the time wasnt there at the box store.....I needed it immediately so my first tool/battery combo was Milwaukee.
Have no regrets obviously cause Milwaukee is top of the line but the price certainly puts a dent in the wallet.
Sorry for the inconvenience.....but looks like since you were covered by insurance you ended up in a better position then before the theft.
Tools are such a big target, certainly the professional grade ones.....thats one thing I worry about....Ive invested thousands into my tools and it would utterly cripple me if someone stole them.....
The biggest impact of the ordeal is a wake up call that times/sentiments have changed with lawlessness seen as 'the new normal' by those who are hired/elected to enforce laws.
Sorry to actually see your tools being stolen on video Matt. In the UK there's cameras on most entrances to car parks reading licence plates. That's so they can fine us for parking if we pass a certain time limit. Glad to see you got sorted out. Nice touch the tired batteries. Hope your OK and got your job finished. Tony
I'm plenty good Tony... thanks for your concern. If only cameras were used for catching real crooks instead of chasing down people who stay parked a little too long! Sad reality these days...
I had a big collection of tools for doing leaded stained glass projects. A guy who lived in the same building as me broke into my little work area and cleaned me out. Last I heard he was in Winchester, KY. Maddening.
Maybe a road trip to Winchester KY to set things right is in order? 😡
I have had a few tools stolen over the years, but like you, at these times I had failed to secure my vehicle. Everything I have had stolen was over five years old so, in my mind, on it’s last legs ! and I should have replaced it anyway !
The thing that is never mentioned is all the little bits and bobs that live in drill cases that can have cost, at the very least, the price of a new battery. You know, small sets of multipurpose drill bits, driver bits, magnetic drivers, countersink bits, plug cutters, drill stops… plastic plugs, the list is considerable. The loss of which is seriously annoying, often because you can’t remember whether you still own it or not, because it might be in another box !!
Long ago (medieval) there used to be special, harsher punishments for stealing tools. Maybe we should bring them back.
They should have never gone away IMHO...
First of all, sorry this happened to you Matt. Secondly, I have to agree with you on Makita,s quality. I’m still using my Circular saw, miter saw, and surface planer that I bought in the late 80’s. Granted I don’t use them daily as a contractor would, but the build quality is solid.
I've long felt Makita checks all the boxes for cordless tools I need and use. I think Milwaukee has some solid tools too but, these days anyways, are geared more towards heavy/rough use/abuse to the point the extra weight for that durability is a negative feature for this 'ol nail bender anyways...
More evidence of the depravity of our society. Sir, my passions are inflamed! Enough said. BTW, lesson learned for all of us. The guy who burgled your truck will receive his just reward. He’s done this before and quite possibly in the same location. Semper Fi
I left the side box of my truck unlocked about two years ago, went into the grocery store or it could have happened one other spot and someone bagged my tray and 2 baskets full of trinkets. Each one not costing much on its own but, added up and the tears were flowing.
Sorry for your loss 's !!! 🥺 Been there more than once !!!! 😡.
Btw.. great tool choice !!!!! 😉
I've long been a fan of Makita for most, but not all, of my cordless tools... I get the idea we have that in common?
@@NextLevelCarpentry true some Milwaukee 😉
@@trakyboy5128 My favorite electrician has more than a few Milwaukee cordless tools that I've found myself borrowing on jobsites on more than one occasion and I've been known to shamelessly borrow a DeWalt now and again... anything for the cause of gettin' er dun, right? 😎
What value to going up to 20v, brushless motors, etc.
I looked at corded Skil brand and Makita circular saws last year and they looked absolutely identical. Are they built by the same company with different colors and labels?
Personally I find the weight and size, not to mention cost, of batteries with higher voltage outweigh (pun intended) their benefits for the type and amount of work I do. When 18v won't do the job effectively or efficiently, I do like I did for decades: roll out a cord and a tool with unlimited provided power and get the job done.
Admittedly my preference here doesn't apply to all and, if it were an option back in the day, I can imagine I'd have a tool or two in the 20v+ range for certain jobs.
Matt sorry this happened to you. I’ve been there myself and it really stinks. Glad you were able to make a good situation out of it though
Sorry to hear your experience!
Yeah, it was as embarrassing as it was maddening. Worst part is that from now on I've got to pay attention ALL the time because things are just different these days: no fear of consequences or shame like there once was. Can't imagine what it's like in some cities these days where they'll steal the catalytic converter right out from under your vehicle!
I guess the other surprise for me was the “box store”. The big M is popular here in Wi and John M is the wealthiest man in the state! It amazes me how he did that given the quality of the average products they sell. I use them too, but only on stuff like PT lumber and stuff that quality doesn’t really matter.
Recently retired after 30 + yrs. of framing I can say that the best saw for every day use is Makita . Not sure about the battery one's but I'm sure there a damn good tool.
Can't believe you retired Michael... hope you enjoy the new season of life.
I now have time to do what I love and that's woodworking! I make a beautiful type of keepsake box and I may start selling a few just to have some milk money if you know what I mean and I'm sure you do 😂😂@@NextLevelCarpentry
Great way to spend some of your newfound time... feel free to attach a link to photos of your keepsake boxes here if you want. Hope that goes well for you so you can even spring for chocolate milk once in awhile😋🤣
I went with Makita but in hindsight wished I rather went with Milwaukee because of deals and range of tools.
However, if it happened today I would seriously consider Flex and Skil.
Neither FLEX, SKIL, or KOBALT offer a full suite of tools. I have plenty of the three, but if you're a one battery platform traditionalist, they're not a line worth getting into. But if KOBALT made a PEX expansion tool and a better angle grinder, I think it could crest that hill.
@@orijimi Skil and Flex keep expanding though.
If it's the same ACME, I bought my first and only table saw from them back in the early 90s which I still have and use.
Glad it wasn’t a big hit to you. I keep a Tile in my work bag. I am Makita fan boy because they are independant. No parent company making decisions.
The Tile sounds like a good idea. I didn't know Makita is 'independent' but it makes sense that it makes them better.
I have had Makita tools for 46 years and not a problem ai now have quite a few battery Makita but I still have my electric router and electric planer which still work fine even though they are 46 years old the only thing I had to put new roller bearings in my planer about 12 years ago all my other Makita tools about 30 of them work fine I should add I look after my tools very well eg I still have my origional metal wheelbarrow also 46years old
I hear that thieves these days can just walk in an shoplift new ones off the shelves. Tools, camping equipment, electronics- is there no shame?
Soon I won't have to worry about used tools sitting the the back of an open truck bed because thieves can just walk out of the store with brand new ones still in the box instead of tools worn and tattered from actual work on jobsites, right? 😡
Sorry about the theft.
I'm happy with my Makita tools but I've been disappointed with the subcompact drill and driver.
..sorry to hear
It’s 2023 and you leave your valuables unsecured….you’ve been on this planet long enough to know better.
So societal decline where personal belongings are free for the taking by criminals with little probability of consequences for their actions are MY problem for not knowing better? Good grief! It's exactly that sort of thinking that's the root cause of this sad state of affairs IMHO.
Sorry to hear that your tools were stolen. The police wont do a thing and hopefully insurance will cover the replacement. Been there once and hope to never go there again having my tools stolen is like stealing a part of my life away. I had Makita then and went with Milwaukee finding out the Milwaukee Batteries for the M18 fuel system are just bad.
It's been 45 years since I framed houses. That skil saw was almost our only power tool. It used a 7 1/4" blade if I recall correctly. Maybe it's the tinker toy that uses a 6 1/2" blade.
The only thing a 7 1/4" blade does that a 6 1/2" won't do is cut through material that's 3/4" thicker but uses blades that cost more to buy and resharpen. The joke is on anyone who thinks they're superior with a 7 1/4" saw for anything but a very small percentage of cuts on thicker material IMHO.
@@NextLevelCarpentry Matt your math is slightly off, the difference is even less as the blade can't use the whole diameter to cut. Where 7-1/4 shines is cutting bevels though to be fair
@NextLevelCarpentry I don't ever remember seeing a 6 1/2" blade, 7 1/4" was small. Often, we stacked material and cut. A bigger blade would have been nice, not smaller. We had no battery tools, and air was rare. Sometimes, we rented air tools, didn't own them.
I know a lot of guys went with the 7 1/4" model but, while building custom homes back in the day I cut literally hundreds of 2x rafters for all manner of hip and gable roofs a day, days and weeks on end and the only time I ever wanted a 7 1/4" saw was for cutting 6x6 posts all the way through because, with the 6 1/2" I had to cut through the middle with a sharp handsaw.
@feinschmegga: you are correct: about 3/8" more cut depth... not worth hefting the extra weight and size of the 7 1/4" model hundreds of times per day IMHO. Ever had to cut a hundred rafter tails overhead while walking on a 2x12 plank? And why use a 7 1/4" saw for cutting 1/2" plywood sheathing on roof and walls? I learned from my first boss the importance of working smarter, not harder... 😉😎
I am so sorry you had to go through that. I no am a hobbyist that occasionally sells a piece and part of our Churches Handyman Ministry. What are your thoughts on the Harbor Freight Bauer and Hercules tools?
Whatever it takes to get the job done. I generally find that some of the 'knock off brands' are just too junky to be much good but I've also seen situations where they can be the best value of cost and performance.
This is another reason why the builders truck needs an 8' bed.
Great advertisement, good job.
Hey Matt, just so your aware. I believe that white little SUV. Is an 01 Ford escape. If you Google, 01 white Ford escape. I think you'll agree. just my thought. Anyhow sorry for your loss my friend. Glad you got some new tools. But man, I'd be so pissed!
I'm sure you're right about the vehicle make and model... I didn't think it through much and just parroted what I initially heard from store security so thanks for adding the correction! Best, Matt
@@NextLevelCarpentry your welcome! Honestly, I was just trying to help out in anyway I could. But I'm sure your local PD, has much more qualified people than myself. Said people are probably watching that security recording again and again, to gather any info that they may need. So they can put out an APB, giving all local law enforcement a BOLO for a White Ford Escape!
Anyhow I digress, I hope they find the idiot/s that took your tools. And make them use said tools, to build a box around themselves, out of 4"x10" lvls that are 20' long. Atop a sheet of ice! While it's sleeting! And muddy! Lol! Take care my friend!
Being a victim of theft like that has always left a bad taste in my mouth it must have happened about seven times to me over the years now. I'm only 51 too.. a few times to my personal tools a few times for tools for accompanies I've work for. The real hard hat was my own personal tools we're all high-end equipment for my own personal use.
There will always be some low life out there itching to steal. Should have shut that tail gate. Maybe you can keep the tools in the cab? Maybe there is a project in it? "The in-cab" tools holder. Perhaps it could be a bolted down, lockable tool carrier for the tub?
I am constantly amazed, that in this day and age of high tech, security videos always seem grainy and pixelated. Very frustrating. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this, but on the bright side....... new tools!
I think security cameras are made by the same company that makes them for UFO's and Sasquatch, don't you? 😉🙃
@@NextLevelCarpentry Definitely!😅
Matt, I've had tools stolen from me 3 times over the past 10 years. Every single time was from either my locked truck or my locked trailer. Being security minded makes little difference in my experience. Each time has cost me $1,000's of dollars, not only to replace the tools, but also to repair the vehicle or trailer they were stolen from.
At this point I no longer leave tools in my truck at any time unattended, and my trailer now has 400w of solar power, 400ah of batteries, and over 3000w of ac power completely off grid. It now sports new security that is cellular based, gps tracked, and video recorded both inside and outside 24 hours a day 7 days a week. This also means a wifi hotspot for uploads to the cloud of every instance of motion. My trailer is also now kept behind locked fences (8ft tall) and inside a metal storage building. I will NEVER leave a trailer or any tools on a job site overnight ever again. Period.
Additionally, the upgrades allow me to work completely off grid in the trailer, and have now added a refrigerator and microwave along with my coffee pot to the trailer that keeps my food and drinks ready to go at all times.
While the system was expensive, yes, it was also a lot cheaper to add than replacing my tools a 4th time. While it may not prevent someone from again stealing the tools, at least this time I WILL have 4K video evidence of the theft, both inside and outside the trailer for the authorities and should finally make someone accountable for the theft. Too often these thefts go unpunished or even unreported (because, what's the point?) and there is no accountability for the thief or thieves.
Wow... your experience makes me grateful for such a relatively minor incident. I prolly need to up my game as the tool theft trend continues to escalate...
@@NextLevelCarpentry While it does seem that these are mostly crimes of opportunity, I blame our current justice system for it as much as I blame the individuals committing the theft. The lack of consequences and accountability is rampant now, and doesn't seem to be getting any better in the future. I do think that law enforcement wants to help, but it's as if they are handcuffed by the administrations and legal system. Being vigilant and situationally aware is likely the most effective way to help prevent events, and I think I took it to a whole other level out of my own frustration, but I gained a ton of piece of mind, and a lot of advantages in my setup at the same time.
If I were 20 years younger and still hauling tools to jobsites and leaving them I'd likely follow your footsteps for that piece of mind. As it is it's much easier to just pay a little more attention and take simple extra measures to prevent a recurrence.
@@NextLevelCarpentry agreed... But I'm 58, and still hauling tools.!
@@AlAmantea Awesome that you're still doing what you do at your age... you have my respect! FWIW a couple months ago I was hanging 4x12x5/8 drywall all by myself. Used a lift for the ceiling and top sheets on walls but, as I'm sure you know, the sheets don't jump onto the lift by themselves! 😉😎
Thieves hate leaving traces, so any prevention should be around that topic !
For anyone that buys tools the 2 first things you need to buy is a good camera and second an engraver pen.
When tools get used they tend to get scratches. These scratches can be seing as fingerprints so if you as a owner see there's a deep scratch then take photo. And as prevention take photos every 2 month so that each has an history of how it was used.
The engraver pen(manual/electrical).
Find places on your tools that you don't mind getting markings. Do some weird symbols or letters. The axel on the chuck, the trigger, where the batteries sits, the direction switch etc.
If a tool is stolen then wait 1 month before fore revealing the markings. Just think about the panich when stolen AND sold tool can be traced back to you.
The engraver pen(manual/electrical) can also be used with succes on the side of a rim(bicycle/car). Depending on your skills with a pen you can engrave this :
Landcode(USA=+001)
//Then Police(911)
//casenumber.
This will create a trace from you to thieves without revealing any kind of personal information.
Sorry you got your tools stolen I know exactly how that feels on more than one or two occasions. My tools was locked up and out of sight and it did not matter if it was dark or daylight. Had insurance just for tools and it was just a joke. Back then I had every serial number and make sure to make reports it did not help at all. Those who steal today don't plan on using them chances are they do not know how to they stealing them so they can sell them to get money for drugs
I'm afraid you're correct on the fate of stolen tools... nothing is likely to improve anytime soon given lack of consequences for criminals of all levels.
That really sucks. I know it was months ago now but that wasn't a Jeep but rather a 2001-2008 Ford Escape and probably an XLS model based on the unpainted gray bumpers
Thanks! I'll bet you're right... I questioned myself repeating what I was told at one point but didn't update my script before recording voice over for the video. Wish it would help for catching the crooks but I doubt it would make a difference now or even at the time.
I always wondered what kind of person parks like that (0:46)...now I know!
I often wondered what kind of person is so nit picky that they fail to consider context and have a total lack of situational awareness... and now I know too!
Too bad about the tools, a thief should have their hand broken when caught, I feel. And it pains me to buy more because damn it I already bought them!
Hand chopped off...🪓
what state do you live in if you don't mind me asking that menards look familiar lol
No joke, but the cable guy stole my nice DeWalt cordless drill. Didn't know it till a week later. Ugh.
Matt so sorry to hear about your tools getting stolen. Hopefully when the thief goes to use them they'll Burn up ❗..
Just curious why you switched from Dewalt to makita ❓
I switched from DeWalt to Makita for what I saw as a better battery system (at the time, back in 2009) and what I felt as tool design/features with a little more class. That's all me though and I don't knock anyone with different preferences. From the outside looking in it seems to me that DeWalt has come a long way over the years but, even if all things were 'equal' I'd stay with Makita for continuity across tools/chargers/batteries because some of the tools, like an angle drill, gets so little actual use that I'd be replacing more than a few perfectly good tools for no justifiable reason.
Was it worth it to involve your insurance company? I would think a likely increase in rates would dwarf a claim in the long run.
Or, even just the deductible.
Especially because of age and depressation
Actually I've had the same insurance carrier for over 20 years and they handled the whole matter quickly and with aplomb. It's a great policy with a very acceptable deductible/premium so your concerns are not concerns in this case.
Thanks for sharing and the don’t make the same mistake I made part. I do try to learn from others mistakes, found it very helpful as I just don’t have the time to make them all myself. Especially liked you giving the power screwdriver a little blip when addressing the ripoff artists. Gem of the video….said it without saying it. Well done Sir.
Insurance cannot replace those heirloom tools we all own, use daily and know like the back of our hand.
I've had tools stolen from me on two occasions. It has been many years but it still makes me sick. I'm sick for you.
I might share a little behind the scenes details of this episode with Patrons in an effort to relieve the 'sick for you' symptoms but I do appreciate your commiseration... sure make a guy re-think some things!
Might as well upgrade since you need to replace them. Sucks that someone stole them.
They got your tools but they will pay double for it in the long run. They think they got away with something but something will happen to them costing them many more times that what those tools cost!
Agreed, there is an all seeing eye who watches from above everything and these thieves will pay back more than they stole. That’s a fact
I hope dealing with Acme Tools went ok for you. I used to work there and they can be WORTHLESS.
I suspect everywhere is worthless at some point... personally ACME has been remarkable even before I started collaborating with them... but, then again, I never worked there
That's menard. Used to go there when in the north.
Stopping at menarnds was the first mistake, Sorry I just had to but they do have good fasteners and the wood is decent ngl
Do you always park across 2 bays
No. Do you always nit pick about it?! Good grief!
My wood-shop is primarily stationary tools.
So if my home burned down I would not rebuild.
😔Sorry to hear that.
Makita fan boy here
Man that sucks…sorry.
I had tools stolen out of my garage that was closed. They somehow opened the garage door with some half ass method jacking it up in the process.
That was in California and it was the impetus of me moving out of that shithole state.
In the U.K., our police don't even bother to try investigating such crimes....they give you a crime number and tell you to call your insurance provider! Tool thievery is big business in Britain and we get no justice...if you catch them in the act and give them a slap, you get arrested for assault, whilst they are released to do it again!
Caught a guy trying to grab my tools from my truck a few months ago. Went poorly for him
Good on you... wish it was on video as a deterrent for others!
Sad experience. I hope the police use traffic camera footage to catch this thief.
That's one of the reasons pickup trucks are terrible trades vehicles. My work truck is a van with puck locks.
Sad state of affairs when criminals dictate what vehicles people need to protect their stuff instead of choosing what's best for the work at hand.
Sorry that your tools were stolen. Did insurance cover it? It sounds like you made lemonade out of those lemons though!
Humiliation and infuriation from this event had a bigger impact than the $$ involved so the 'lemonade' was drinkable but still bitter. 😉😡
Makita ftw
Thieves are a nuisance - you cannot leave anything in the back of your truck or exposed to view in the cab. Hell, they will steal the tailgate too! I know a contractor who lost both his tools and tailgate. It’s only going to get worse as the economy tightens.
How unlucky Matt. Those vermin are everywhere nowadays. Tony
Seems like vermin are crawling out of holes everywhere! Guess it's true what they say "Life is a rat race... trouble is, the rat's are winning!"
If only we could put cameras at the entrances/exits of such places, at eye level, to catch license plates, faces, etc. Apparently that is too much trouble?
I doubt cameras would make much of a difference when law enforcement isn't willing or capable of apprehending and prosecuting this type of behavior... sad state of affairs for sure!
Too pixelated? wait a minute. every show on TV I see that uses a conveniently located camera always seems to have some super magnification zoom in where you can get every single little digit from the plate. You mean this is how it really is? Oh boy I've been duped all this time. thats hollywood for ya!
I learned that there are services that can work with pixelated footage digitally with near miraculous results... for a price. Not worth it here and I don't know anyone working at C.S.I. 😉
Nice ad, sorry about the tools, that really sucks
Thieves are bad enough, but thieves that steal tools that a man or woman would use to work and make money for their families - they are the worst of the worst.
For sure!
my tools were also stolen recently, the insurance didn't want to pay either, so I'm $4k worth of tool short
Sounds like you need a different insurance policy... mine was very compliant and fast in response, exactly what I expect of them.
the best anti-theft method would've be to have replace your Makita tools with Ryobi tools. No need to ever close your trunk again.
LOL!! Trouble is people walking by would think I was taking a load to the dump and pile garbage in on top of them and I'd have THAT do deal with! 😂😂
Did the scumbags steal the wooden box you kept your cordless tools in? I'm still waiting to see a video on how those good looking boxes were made. Hint, hint!
I'm sure that would have been the first thing stolen but, thankfully, it wasn't there when the cordless tools were stolen. It just happened to be there while filming the 'reenactment' part for this video. FWIW I've got over 2 hours of edited video 'in the can' for a Master Carpenter's Tool Tote build video which, as a full 'master class' build, will end up at least 3 full hours long. Thanks for your patience! Naturally I'm biased but feel it will be well worth the wait. 😉😎
@@NextLevelCarpentry Well I was referring to the closed rectangular plywood boxes with the custom edges/corner detail you said you kept your cordless Makitas in about two years back. I really liked those boxes and would like to make them myself.
Oh... THAT one! I'd really like to do a video on that design but, even though a couple little un-intuitive tricks make it doable, it would be a very involved video project. I'd love to do it but can't promise anything at this time...
I recently "lost" a full bag of Stabila levels, 5 in total. It was a bitter pill to swallow at $500.00 in replacement cost..
@@billystray7007 theft at that level is a personal thing... hope you recover and move on knowing myself and others commiserate with you? Have you checked your business and/or homeowner's insurance for possible coverage for at least part of the loss?
