People saying it’s not as good as the model Y… it doesn’t matter. The insurance group for this car in the UK is much lower than any Tesla. For young people it’s impossible to insure a standard range model 3 or Y.
Polestar 2 would cost me £1,100 to insure
    Model 3 would be £6,800
    Model Y would be £8,900
The quotes I’ve got for the EX30 are around £1,600
Which car is better is only a thing when there are other cars to compare to, and for young drivers, there isn’t a Tesla that is comparable because even if you could afford the £17,000 to buy or lease a used one, the insurance makes no sense.

    • @adrianguggisberg3656

Yeah, there's clearly something wrong with insurance in UK. Like here in Switzerland I pay sub £1k for both a MY and a Ioniq 5, which is less than for a comparable petrol/diesel car. And there are no (and never were any) subsidies for EVs here. There are just as many narrow and tricky roads here as well, so what's the explanation for this?

That's for 21y/o male, no prior accidents or suspended licence incidents, licence since 3 years living in my village and driving an estimatet 20kkm p/a
Edit: an M3 would be cheaper to insure, but most 21y/o are still in their education and/or military service and likely couldn't afford a new car and associated depreciation.

    • @adrianguggisberg3656
      @adrianguggisberg3656 2 месяца назад

@@iambenmitchell A Model S in good condition starts from £10k. A good Model 3 is almost never under £20k. At this age I wouldn't recommend leasing a car. If the car is only £10k you likely only want third party insurance @ around £500 (here on Switzerland)
Edit: I save £10k in 36 months plus £3k insurance less the depreciation of the Model S, so roughly £15k over Leasing a Model 3
In your case obviously insurance is a dealbreaker for Tesla.

Volvo tends to use a lot of steel in their cars, rather than aluminum, so yes, heavier. A lot of pros and cons to that. Tesla has a ten year head start in EV design, but other manufacturers are improving theirs in leaps and bounds. Then there’s the fact that Geely have actually released compact car models ahead of Tesla, taking the advantage, as have a number of other brands from Europe and China. Tesla is now going to have to create a very good sub-compact car to counter that. Tesla has cut margins to the bone on the model 3 and Y. Can the company do the same with a new model to make it affordable for the masses, yet remain profitable? That remains to be seen.

OPD does not mean "coasting" is also not possible - I use OPD 100% of the time in my Tesla model 3 (I have no choice - it's fixed), I often keep the pedal at a position where the consumption is neutral (neither braking/charging nor accelerating) OPD does not mean you are either 100% using the battery or 100% off the pedal and charging.
I have a lifetime consumption of 108wh/km with 50% freeway at 110km/h and 50% city so I try to be conservative, if there is no traffic then auto pilot and manual driving have the same consumption, when there is a lot of freeway traffic I can do 2-3% or so better by anticipating the slowing traffic and trying to keep the momentum going as much as I can, not always possible without annoying the traffic around / behind you there is a difference but it is small.

I've got a 2023 XC60 Recharge with the same system and a 2023 model 3 - the Tesla system is much better, one major issue I have with the Volvo system is when the outside road marking disappears (the line marking the outside edge of the road) or the space betwee the lines widens significantly the Volvo wants to lurch violently towards the unmarked edge or try to rapidly re-centre, the Tesla will recognise what is happening and stick to the same distance from the centre line much better.
The Volvo system also has more micro adjustements than the Tesla (left to right when going straight), the Tesla is far more consistent at keeping the wheel straight.

Just to add some context to those who are unaware: The reason this car gets a lot of attention is because European cities need small-ish and more affordable EVs. The EX30 starts at 329 000 NOK and has a very good balance between being practical/boxy and still fairly efficient. You dont get many other smaller pure EV platform, IKEA spaceships for this low price!

Also the lack of a driver’s & heads-up display, I would also miss the electric roof blind. Price in the UK EX30 £40,995. #1 Brabus £43,450. A small warning from a Swede. This "Volvo" is built to meet a"low" price and it can show:
    - the cheaper version with 51kWh battery (due when the climate is getting warmer..) uses LiFePo+ (lithiumion, iron phosphate) batteries that are historically far worse in the cold than this 69kWh NMC/NCM (nickel mangan cobolt). The claimed improvements for Lifepo4 should tested. They do use less materials from conflict countries so hopefully they perform good enough.
    - small 12,3" screen, cheaper than larger ones used in competitors models?
    - no OTA updates for any version (it lacks a powerful enough main computer to handle this reliable)
    - very, if any, few physical buttons are a safety problem. But cheaper to manufacture.. Navigation to, for example, activate the heated rear window during driving is very complex. Touch buttons work very unpredictable. Very un-Volvo 😢
    - the heated steering wheel turns itself off. Randomly or to soon. Bugs, you are the beta tester
    - road stability on snow when one pedal mode is active can be dangerous, cruising at highway speeds and letting to of the gas pedal has been said (DN.se journalist) to be unstable. Very un-Volvo 😢
    - backseat is very crammed for 170cm+ persons

There is a technical limit to the mass of the battery. The XC40 RWD has an optional 82 kWh battery which kills the driving dynamics in exchange for faster charge times and longer range. MG4 LR has the same trade off. Unless you can install a 90kwh battery in a car this small and make it weigh LESS than it does now it will be undriveable for all but a few. A car the size of a Corolla cross that weighs twice as much and costs three times as much is not a good deal
