The Garberg is a sweet knife. But the Kansbol blew my mind, half the weight of the garberg yet can do at least 90% of the task. It’s also an absolutely pleasure to use for food prep because of the thinner blade.
I own the Benchmade Puuko, Fallkniven A1, and other quality fixed bladed knives. This year the knife I've taken into the woods more than any other is the Mora Kansbol. I agree, it's an awesome knife with all of the features I need. One upgrade I made was to replace the belt strap with a heavier leather belt strap that I made. I recommend this knife to anyone looking for a good woods knife.
Like you I own some nice knives, Falkniven F1, Joker Ember and some, but unless I need something specific then the Kansbol is quite often my go-to. £-for-£ I think it’s one of the best value knives going.
The best forrage knife, but the sharp edge does roll over quickly as compared to my carbon companion. The tip slicing for stem cutting squash is nice and easy! Sandy soil just grates me the wrong way on blade or teeth! Lol
Hello Ernie, long time subscriber here. Once again I agree with you 100%. The Kansbol is my favorite bushcraft knife, and I got a bunch. I have a Garberg on order, we’ll see how it compares with the Kansbol. Being a lefty, the ambidextrous sheath for both is very important to me, the only other option from Mora is the 2000 which is a very underrated knife. I have to say though, perhaps the best bang for your buck Mora is the Companion HD, that handle is Sooo comfortable! Hey, on a different note, take a look at the BPS line of knives from the Ukraine. I just got my first, very good quality and design, but still affordable!
A local store was selling the basic Mora carbon steel knife for £3 - thats about $3.50! I've paid more than that for a tent peg!!! I use these basic ones to teach bushcraft as part of my job. I use a custom made myself(Made by me from an 01 tool steel knife blank) but it is not the sort of thing you want to use for teaching people. The Kansbol is the knife I actually tell people to buy if they want to get into bushcraft as its a really solid starter knife that will last for years. i prefer a thicker blade but not everyone does. Good video and great knife.
Couldn't agree more. I love mine and I've put it through more then it probably deserves. And its held up best bang for buck knife in my humble opinion.
In addition to bushcrafting, the Kansbol is a great game processing knife. I know that isn't the focus of your channel. But, given both bushcrafting and hunting, the Kansbol makes a wonderful all rounder!
Awesome review! A little bit of everything. Close up shots, detailed summary, and action shots. One of the best knife review videos I have ever seen. Great video quality and shots as well. Thank you!
The best value mora for the money is the 511 but the Kansbol is by far my favourite Mora. That should speak volumes coming from someone that has been using them for 30 odd years. I keep the orange (stainless) Bushcraft Survival in the glove compartment of my car aswell. Plenty of survival knives comes in kits with sharpeners and ferro rods but I think this is probably the best value kit on the market and the knife is one you actually enjoy using. I like most Moras but the Eldris doesnt really make much sense to me.
Ernie I have several Mora Knives. I love them all. My favorite is the Light My Fire version with the built in Ferro Rod. I love it. I did a test in one of my videos of which of my knives made the best feather sticks and it was hands down the Mora Light my Fire. God Bless
I just bought an orange Kansbol and I have to say it is quickly becoming my favorite all around knife. I also own a Clipper, Companion stainless, and the Mora Robust. While I like all of those the handle of the Kansbol is just more solid in my hand and comfortable.
The best for the money is the Mora 711. It's 4" of carbon steel, and has a superior, grippy handle. They make a version that has a 5 3/4" blade. And there are stainless versions of the knife. For some reason, it hasn't been popularly reviewed on RUclips.
I agree. I think mora would do great if they updated the 700 series knives with a nicer sheath and better finished blades. Like they did with the 911/946 for the bushcraft line. The 711 probably has the most comfortable plastic handle they've ever done IMO. Far better than the companion.
Got 5 Moras, from clipper to garberg, and I feel the best value so far is the companion HD. Not tried the kansbol yet though, but there's always room for more moras right? Thanks Ernie take care 👍🙂
3 of my favorite things, knives, fire, and coffee. I have been collecting moras for quite sometime. Many have found their way into my carving kit even though I have dedicated carving moras. Should have had stitches the first time using my mora hook knife carving a spoon in seasoned oak. Bought my 7 yr old son the mora that has the rounded point and hand guard for his first "bushcraft" knife. I did get him a pair of kevlar gloves to match mine when carving. I think my next may be the floating fishing knife. May need a couple of the folding opinel filet knives. They are my fav EDC knives. Although I usually carry 3 daily at work being an electrician for diff purposes. 1 is a mora electrician knife. I love using the mora chisel knife too. My fav mora for the money I've paid is probably the mora black. I got it years ago it was around 30 bucks back then.
I got a mora 2000 blade blank for my birthday and have made a lovely handle and sheath for it. The only difference I see is the kansbol has the 90 degree spine. I took a file to mine to make one. It is my favorite knife I've made of recent times. The combi grind is fantastic balance of sturdy scandi and fine slicey flat grind. I love it. Great value, and the fact mines handmade and unique I treasure, but the blade makes it
Well, my biggest question may have been answered! Not about Mora’s, like you I have several but... about powdered cream for your coffee! I wondered if you could just use it in your coffee without having to pre-mix it. I’m assuming it taste the same? Excellent video, thanks again.
Ernie, another nicely done video!✅☑✔ ⏩⏩ I was wondering how a loop of cord helps you to locate the knife on the ground❓ Since the everything is all orange, do use the cord for something else besides a bright color❓
One of my new favorite knives "BPS Knives BS2FTS Full Tang Bushcraft Knife" the only downside on mine is no 90 spine, had to make mine. Cheap, haven't been able to break mine yet, had it for a year. Small company. Blade will spark so works as backup sparker. My daughter and I bought them for a lark but we leave our $150 knives at home and just take these. We have 3 of their models now and will probably buy more later.
I absolutely love BPS knives, and can’t understand why they aren’t more popular. I have 12 of them ... doubles of every model I could find in stock... they are by far the best bang for your buck... I love moras, but bps takes the crown for me
I am not worried about the knife not being full tang. I cut the handle off a mora classic one time just because I wanted to change the handle and it was a booger to get off. I put it on my anvil and beat it with a hammer thinking it would crack...nope, I had to grind it off. The combination of nylon handle material and epoxy make these things pretty impervious to all kinds of idiocy.
I have a Kansbol and also like the Eldris for a smaller knife. If you ever get a chance, take a look at Helle knives made in Norway. They are beautifully made and for me capture the essence of nature.
I’m just North of the Pontchartrain,so I feel ya with the mosquitoes. My opinion, best value Companion HD, my favorite is the Garberg (both carbon steel)
The Kansbol is my favorite mora I use it for food prep I wish they would put the same handle material on the Garberg the Garberg handle is all hard plastic unlike the kansbol hard plastic covered with a rubber over mold
I´d be hard press to decide which Mora model is the best knife for the money. They are all good and I´d just get the the right one for the task. I got a couple of classic ones with a birch wood handle, the Robust and a couple of Eldris. I am really satified with them. Probably none of those knives would stand up to "Forged in Fire" type tests. As cutting tools they just fine. I have nicer knives but they may be less value for the money.
HA! I just got one for one of my best friends. He wanted a good, stainless camping knife he could also use as a steak knife. Thanks for confirming my recommendation, Ernie! 😆Take care down there. I hope everything is drying out, and you and your family have a great Thanksgiving week.
Kansbol is a great camping knife, especialy for someone, who likes to carve some wood too. Bushcraft Black is a great bushcraft knife. Classic series, are great woodcarving knives. Eldris, is a neck-pocket, a great allaround knife. Companion model has a great handle, but IMO, it should have a flat grind and not a scandi which works great, only on wood. That would make it, one of the best Companion knives on the market. The rest Moras, are great knives, but the ones I mentioned, are the best Morakniv models.
I feel like they should make a full tang high carbon version of the Garberg. If for some strange reason mora decided to use micarta scales as well i things it would be a home run.
I got a few Moras now, the Kansbol has one major con... the brushed blade doesn't slide that well in meat for example, and not as easy to redo the edge once its damaged as for example the Robust or the PRO series. Also, the spine is too sharp, it cut mi finger when polishing the blade. From the daily usability standpoint I think the PRO S is a killer, its probably the best 7€ I've spent. Really easy to sharpen, stainless steel, awesome grip and acceptable sheath. Anyways, if I could own only one knife in my life I would probably still go with the Kansbol. It does pretty much everything that anyone could need..
There is a video where the gentleman opens the handle, that said and what he exposes about the Mora, I think full tang is really over rated. He opens the handle of the less expensive to show how the tang is made and fitted to the handle. It will never come loose or off. Great videos. Dave & The Girls
Much like the blade shape/profile. At the same time I am a bit sceptic about durability of the top/point section being that high grind and thin out. Have companion orange and HD black, great knives for the price. Hoping to get one like kansbohl or hunter or 2000 series, both share same blade design. But again not sure abut thinned out part of the blade... any thoughts about that?
I am a bit confused about your grip on the knife during the feather-stick making. You kept your thumb on the same side of the handle as the back of your hand. This seems to reduce the grip and also back your wrist away from the blade thereby losing leverage vs the standard hammer grip. Is it done for some safety concern with a large wood slice stabbing your hand or thumb? Some sort of injury or hand/grip issue? Comfort? I don't think that I have seen anyone else grip a knife that way.
I'm curious, your knife has an orange handle and an orange sheath. Why do you find it necessary to tie a piece of orange para chord to it? It already stands out against a woodland background.
I have one of these, and am very pleased with it. I bought a Marttini "Lynx" knife in 1966. It was still serving me well until somebody stole it a couple of years ago.
If you like the kansbol, you should try the forester 2000.. I like the rubber grip, same geometry but mirror polish and rounded spine, it's slightly cheaper.. But the grip 👌 I have the two and I prefer the forester.. How's your shop, any progress.?
*I actually dislike this knife. I don't like the blade shape or grind. I also dislike the handle shape as well. It's not a bad knife by any means, but I prefer other Mora's like the heavy duty, clipper, or bushcraft.*
Can't really give this video a like or dislike because it's your opinion and it's obvious you're biased. It's a good slicer so it makes a great pick-nick food prep knife but it's to weak for real life situations as only tool (one tool option). That's probably why you use a saw to cut the wood to size before you start batoning. Prices and availability all depends on what country you're in of course. You call the Garberg a full tang and we call it an exposed stick tang because the tang is enclosed. Over here I can get a Chinese made 'Brother F006' knife for 30 USD delivered to my door. It's a scandi with a thicker blade of 440C stainless steel, it has micarta handle scales, it's a true full tang (exposed full tang) and it comes with a well made kydex (not plastic) sheath. So as a one tool option in stainless in this price range it will be the Chinese one. Taking friends out on a pick-nick that Kansbol is more light weight and the thinner better slicer. But would you take this knife as only tool on a 10 day adventure out in the woods as your only tool? No ax, no saw, just this one knife?
Here we go again second word out of your mouth is ‘money’ - not ‘which is the best mora knife’ but ‘best for the money!!’ ‘Best bang for the buck!!’ ‘ less than $10’ !! ‘Wow!! I’m not paying $**** for a knife!! ‘ Is that because your life isn’t worth more than $5!??? Pathetic!!!
@@JunkyardFox It's absolutely accurate. High carbon blades throw more sparks. It's simple chemistry. I didn't say it wouldn't work, but that it doesn't work as well as a carbon blade.
@@jrr___7902 there is no difference, if there is, it is such a minuscule difference, it wouldn’t even be noticeable. You can use a sharp rock or piece of glass to strike a ferro rod if needed, you just need a sharp edge. Ive made hundreds of fires with my stainless blades, never had an issue once.
@@JunkyardFox Yeah, and you can shave with a sharp rock too, so why carry a knife? Use the best tool for the job. The difference in sparks is significant with a carbon blade. Perhaps you skipped your tenth grade chemistry class.
Grate job Ernie! To be completely honest, id even gonna as far to say, pound for pound, this might be the best knife of all time.

The Garberg is a sweet knife. But the Kansbol blew my mind, half the weight of the garberg yet can do at least 90% of the task. It’s also an absolutely pleasure to use for food prep because of the thinner blade.

How does one try to verify where (and when) it is legal to have a camp fire out in the woods?
Find the Ranger station nearest to the forest, or check at any fire station close to where you want to camp.

I dudnt see anything here to convince me to spend 12 more than the companion.
Did I just see you use the blade edge of the knife on the Ferro rod? Yikes!
No, no you did not
I think there was alot of wasted time in this vid.
Pathetic!!!
Stainless steel is a non-starter. They don't work very well with a ferro rod.
This is not accurate whatsoever. All you need is a squared spine.
@@jrr___7902 lol the difference between a carbon and stainless sharpened spine on a ferro rod isn’t very different, go actually use a blade.
